BEFORE WE BEGIN

OH HELLO

Lisa Marina Weigl Who?

I create, I design, I ask questions. I’m keen on finding inspiration and food for thought in everyday life. My focus lies on creating something that means something to others, appeals to them, communicates with them or moves them in any way. Born in a small town in Bavaria, Germany, quite accurately 25 years ago, I spent my training years in a contrast, living between German small towns, the British countryside and London. Currently finished with my Bachelor Thesis on the poetry of cities and urbanism and how they influence the way we act, think and feel, with a focus on Social Housing it’s pros and cons, I’m searching for a new challenge. I love the wind around me when I ride through London on my black road bike. As of recently I celebrate live jazz clubs (must be me getting older). I appreciate relaxed days at a museum or in a park and dances of joy at a concert. Apart from that, there is the usual: traveling, architecture, design, urbanism, yoga, banana bread and The Beatles. Say hello!

Working on my Bachelor Thesis I research the poetry of cities and how life quality improves by us getting involved in urban planning and design. An approach to a solution amongst the British social housing problem.

e all know London as an exciting city with an unthinkable amount of opportunities. A contrast to this seemingly high life quality are the so called ‘‘sink states’’ of today and with that, neglect, crime, unemployment. Even though there have been a lot of good intentions and visions in the past they mainly have been forgotten.

that already existed to improve life quality in cities. During my work I wrote two books (each 240 pages) about the research and the actual design work I’ve done. Followed by a lecture about my outcome and a small exhibition consisting layout plans, a model and technical details of the Space of Tomorrrow.

I approach this matter on the aspects of self-organisation with a design of an urban furniture piece. This should restore self-trust as well as independency of the people living on estates from their landlords. It should also add new quality to community life, integration of inhabitants and newcomers. A great part of this work was the research on the history on social

The material choice can vary. Worktops, fabrics and colours are ment to be sustainable and even recycled (e.g. terrazzo made out of gravel from the estate, old materials). The roof is planned to be a planted surface, so the inhabitants in the surrounding estate look onto a ‘‘garden’’.

A Layout concept with a focus on the needs of a indie-film-lover, the 80s architecture of the building and the urban surroundings of the former furniture store. The busy streets next to the object had to be conected to the interior of the cinema itself.

CINEMA ON THE PROGRAM

Can a former furniture store be transformed into a cinema?

A monstrous former furniture store in the middle of a busy junction which layout, over time, has been planned so badly (depending on its current tenant and use) that it can be seen as a real task to deal with. Its pillars, walls and levels had to be incorporated into the design. As the urban surroundings can not be faded out they had to be used as a connection to the interior. PA G E N I N E

‘‘cinema’’ do the same at least with its interior and appearance from the outside. The typical 80s design reminds me of the Memphis Movement - bold shapes and striking colours. I saw the design as a kind of puzzle, working with blocks, shapes and patterns and also trying to deal with the weird shape the space provided, through a symmetry in the appearance of the room. Creating a connection between the interior and exterior, the ticket booth is located exactly in the

The pillow cinema and the small hall are located on the upper floor, they can be accessed with each a seperate staircase. Between the roomblocks and the window front, narrow corridors lead the visitor to platforms to waite for the film to start.

CINEMA ON THE PROGRAM

The ground floor opens up as a space for the visitor to choose. After buyng a ticket at the ticket-booth he/she enters the cinema into one of the double doors. If he or she only wants to use the cafe/restaurant he/she goes to the left. The big hall is located in the centre of the ground floor.

CINEMA ON THE PROGRAM The model was made with the focus on size relations and harmony between the shapes used. The easiest material to form the shapes wanted was finnboard. Through the model it can be seen, that the daylight the windowfront gives is hardly obstructed by any objects or rooms.

CINEMA ON THE PROGRAM As the building substance is mainly from the 80s the first association made as a typical 80s design theme is the memphis graphic movement. Mixed with the Bauhaus coloures as a more subtle colour theme, a modern 80s feeling was created. The seating areas are formed as stairs, as a hint to the rawness minimalism of the Brutalism.

An urban object / pop-up with connections to ‘‘Cinema on the Program’’ regarding branding, shapes and materials. Dealing with material and construction questions (use temporary) as a difference to the previously designed cinema.

CINEMA ON THE MOVE

How does a Pop-Up Cinema equal a real cinema?

In a developement of the ‘Cinema on the Program’ project I chose to design a Pop-Up version with the same branding, shapes and also material parallels. How can a cinema also offer the same features the original does? The play of shapes already used in the former design had to be the main focus of the design. The main difference had to be the lightness of the construction. PA G E N I N E T E E N

Seeing the cinema as a projection itself, it’s lined with polycarbonate sheets that are opaque in their

orking on an addition to ‘‘Cinema on the Program’’ I decided to design a pop-up version. The focus on showing the same branding but flexibel and rebuildable, was mainly on materials and construction. The pop-up character shouldn’t get lost though. I chose to treat the design as a form of sculpture or collage (taking the chance of making temporare architecture look a bit crazy and freaky).

appearance and allow (especially at night) to see shiluettes of what’s happening inside. As a upholstery material on the stand I chose rebonded foam that’s easy to move and store. Plywood serves as the perfect component and is flexible to build with. Small elements that aren’t too heavy (as stair surfaces) are made from terrazzo as a parrallel to the original. The colours used also equal the original.

The concept looked as follows: The films showed should be free for the visitors so a ticket booth wasn’t necessary. A big staircase leads onto the cinema, the visitor can then decide if to go straight in and see a film (or other action going on, maybe another trendy yoga class or a talk about pop-up cinemas) or make use of the cafe on the right side, also located on the top of the staff area. The staff area (projection room and gastronomy) can be accessed under the little staircase leading to the visitor

terrace.

CINEMA ON THE MOVE As the urban surroundings are already sleek and cold in their appearance it was a positive side affect that wood was a handier material to use for the temporary constructure than concrete and created a warm contrast. Despite of that the patterns and colours used create a direct parallel to the former design.

As the cinema is a temporary structure it is important that every construction and also furniture used is easy and small to transport and quick to build and dismantle. As a great example Tomas Alonso’s Okay Studio Design was used in this image.

A completed layout design ready to hand in with a written concept, all additional furniture plans and detail drawings for a AirBnB flat in Stuttgart. All used materials and products had to be named and listed and a cost calculation had to be made.

RUN & HIDE AIRBNB

How to make temporare living comfortable and unique?

Finding a concept for an AirBnB flat in the centre of Stuttgart that doesn’t just show another ‘Eames-Chair-arrangement’ isn’t as easy as it sounds at first. Temporare living aquires other needs than a home and built-in furniture much more thought than another Thonet chair. Finishing an interior project with all its additional plans can be challenging. How can a concept have this certain special something and still be simple enough to fit the needs of a e.g. businessman/woman? The concept chosen had a focus on clean lines and hidden features. Sections that aren’t needed during the day can be stored away (e.g. eating area or wardrobe) or configured by the resident (maybe he/ she doesn’t need a clothing rack in the hallway). The living and cooking/dining area is an open living area (wooden floor), the bathroom and sleeping space as the private

How to rescue a “shitty” layout in a perfect area?

An old brewery in the middle of Kreuzberg with a direct connection to the Berlin Underground, right next to a park promises young creatives with a slightly higher budget a great living experience - sounds perfect? The layout just doesn’t quite fit, it seems like a makeshift, doesn’t give much light and the promised ‘‘loft character’’ with its 245cm ceilings is a lie. PA G E T H I R T Y T H R E E

Not just another valet stand in an old man’s bedroom. The aim of the design was a piece of furniture that gives the impression of a sculpture and maybe even creates a ‘‘room in a room feeling’’. Valet stands aren’t dead yet, long live the valet stand!

Can furniture be a sculpture/ art piece?

Design a valet stand that stands out between the conventional dust catchers! The task was to develope a concept that’s unique and draw all the necessary construction plans and detail drawings. Treating the design as a sculpture and artpiece in the first place, my aquirements were the following: It had to be multifunctional (so not only the clothes aspect, but also a face, hair, makeup station and a big mirror), be an addition to the room or even blend in (with the plant pots and the light, that can be used as a standart lamp or the mirror that makes the room bigger), the furniture provides a room in a room, giving the user privacy whilst changing,

The classic use as a rack for clothes is featured on the right element, a table offers to be included as a coffee table in the interior of the room. The left element offers the user a getting-ready-station for e.g. make-up, or shaving and hair. Again, the planters can be seen as an addition/accessoire to the room itself.

A room in a room concept for open living spaces. In this case the space was a converted workshop in Stoke Newington, East London. The parents wanted a seperate room for their two-year old that includes everything a kids room aquires.

CINEMA ON THE PROGRAM

Can a kids room fit into an open living space?

Open living concepts hardly allow seperate private rooms. A confentional room with walls doesn’t look nice and destroys the width the space gives. Working with a block that has been reduced at some points and been added to at others seemed to be the most reasonable way to work with the client’s wishes. The child (at that point 18 month old) should have use of the ‘‘room’’ for some more years in the future. Not only should it give the girl/boy a save environment but also space to play and be creative. The bed is located in the centre with some additional seating space for the parents and a fence to prevent the
