Latest News Big Dance Schools Pledge 200 school children from Cramlington have played their part in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. The children from Cramlington High School, Cragside Primary School and Hareside Primary School received free Dance tuition from Move It Community Dance coaches in order to take part in a World Record attempt for the ‘Largest Dance Routine—Multi-venue’ at 1pm on 18th May 2012. Evidence of the event which took place at Concordia Leisure Centre has now been sent to Big Dance who will be issuing an update on the Guinness World Record attempt soon. As part of Big Dance, there are events taking place on the weekend of 14th and 15th July. Sportivate project Highly Commended A Rock Climbing project delivered by Blyth Valley Arts & Leisure in partnership with Northumberland Sport has been 1 of 4 projects across the North East to be Highly Commended by Sport England. The project which took place in Cramlington gave a group of 14-16 year olds the opportunity to try out Climbing at their local leisure centre. This opportunity provided an avenue to build confidence for individuals who had previously been bullied and had issues with self-esteem. After the Sportivate Climbing sessions, one of the young participant’s commented, “I have gained in personal confidence and also got physically stronger as a result of the climbing activities.” As part of Sport England’s Places People Play initiative, Sportivate offers young people aged 14-25 years the opportunity to take part in a range of different sporting activities. Olympic Torch Relay 160 young people from Blyth have celebrated the arrival of the Olympic Torch at Blyth Sports Centre. Eight schools took part in the BTC Olympic Torch Relay Athletics, a legacy event which will take place annually for the next four years. Each school were given the opportunity to have photo’s taken with the Torch which passed through Blyth on 15th June before making its way to Newcastle. Congratulations to Croftway Primary who won the competition on the day, closely followed by New Delaval Primary and Bede Academy Junior. A range of partners were involved including Blyth Town Council, Northumberland Athletics Network, Blyth Valley Arts & Leisure, Blyth & Bedlington School Sport Partnership and Northumberland County Council. Pegasus riders heading for Nationals Nine riders from the Pegasus Centre are heading for the RDA National Dressage Championships in Gloucestershire in July. Following a qualifying event at Pegasus Centre, five members of Morpeth Riding for the Disabled Group achieved the qualifying standard required. They have also been joined by a further four riders who were successful in a qualifying event held in Carlisle for the countryside challenge competition. Riders who have qualified were Gayle Bloomfield, Jess Southwick, Robyn Rowntree, Michael Benson, Ryan Gillespie, Stefan Storey, Kim Chapman, Gillian McHale and Caitlin McHale. Martin Peagam, Centre Manager at Pegasus said, “we are delighted with the success of our riders. This success is a reflection not only of the dedication and hard work put in by the riders but also of the wonderful support they receive from staff and volunteers.” For more information regarding activities at the Pegasus Centre, contact Martin Peagam on 01670 518219.
Club News Clubs offer FREE Give it a Go Olympic Taster sessions Clubs in South East Northumberland are providing opportunities for local people to try out a range of Olympic sports for free throughout 2012. As part of Northumberland County Council’s Give it a Go programme, taster sessions are taking place in local leisure facilities and community venues in sports such as Boxing, Swimming, Rowing, Volleyball, Triathlon, Table Tennis and Gymnastics. Sessions in other sports are also being offered by BVAL. Clubs involved across South East Northumberland include Newbiggin Boxing Club, Blyth Swimming Club, Cambois Rowing Club, Concordia Volleyball Club, Tri Northumberland, Cramlington Table Tennis Club and Wansbeck Gymnastics Club.
What’s On BVAL Summer Holiday Programme BVAL will be delivering a range of activities during the summer holidays across South East Northumberland, with some activities starting from FREE! Activities include National Play Day & several other events, Mountain Biking, Move It Dance Camps, Active Roadshows & Active Roadshow Plus and FREE Give it a Go Olympic Taster sessions. Training days will be taking place between August and October in preparation for the challenge from Workington to Tynemouth in three days.
