Program Note: Comets spend most of their existence far from the sun and the Earth, orbiting the far reaches of our solar system. While some pass by our planet every few years, others take thousands or even millions of years to complete an orbit. Comets consist of ice and organic materials left over from the formation of our solar system. Some scientists theorize that comets striking our young planet may have deposited water and compounds that contributed to the development of life. Icy Celestial Bodies expresses the distant loneliness of a comet’s path through space through shimmering bowed passages and delicate, sparkling chords. Rushes of rapid notes evoke the excitement of approaching the sun, which produces melting and the comet’s signature gas tail. The gravitational pull of the sun produces momentum which unwinds and fades away as the comet embarks on its next orbit. This piece was selected for the Iowa Composer's Forum 2017 concert series, Hammers & Mallets, and was premiered by Matt Andreini at the Cedar Rock House in Quasqueton, Iowa, on October 6, 2017.

About the Composer: Composer and mezzo-soprano Lisa Neher (b. 1985) writes theatrical, story-driven music for instruments and voices. Trained as a stage actress, her compositions are shaped by her keen sense of dramatic timing and feature aching, lyrical phrases, energetic rhythmic motives, and intense harmonies. Lisa’s particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber opera White Horizon, about a nineteenthcentury Arctic expedition gone wrong, and her song cycle Snapshots, which she performed at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy. She draws inspiration for her instrumental works from the natural world, evoking the joyous bubbling of streams, the delicacy of sprouting plants, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life with evocative timbres. Lisa is in high demand as a performer, premiering numerous works in the United States and abroad, including the leading role of Jennifer in the world premiere of Rita Ueda’s chamber opera One Thousand White Paper Cranes for Japan with the Singaporean ensemble Chamber Sounds. She is the creator of the One Voice Project, a one-woman performance combining contemporary poetry and new musical works for unaccompanied voice chosen through a call for scores initiative. Lisa holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music (Composition and Vocal Performance) and Theatre from Lewis & Clark College, a Master of Music degree in Composition from the University of Kansas, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa. She studied composition with Michael Johanson and Forrest Pierce and voice with Stephen Swanson, Katherine Eberle, Julia Broxholm, and Susan McBerry. Born just south of Seattle, Lisa is an outdoor enthusiast and triathlete.
