Calaveras County Accommodations Guide

How is a Frog’s Jump Measured? The frog is positioned on a “lily pad” and after three hops, a measurement is taken from its nose on a straight line back to the pad Going in the same direction is a major plus? The current world record was set in 1986 by “Rosie the Ribeter”, a California Bullfrog. The World Record Breaking jump was 21 feet, 5 ¾ inches. No Frog? No Problem! For a small fee, you can rent a potential champion, where some 400 hopeful and loving frogs wait for “jockeys” to adopt them. When the frogs aren’t airborne, they reside in the “Frog Condo”, a luxurious spread full of rocks and cool water where competitor rest between jumps. Frog Hop of Fame: The Hollywood Walk of Fame has nothing on Angels camp, where you’ll find 80 gold plaques embedded in the sidewalk marking the Frog Hop of Fame. These plaques honor stars of the amphibian persuasion and their handlers.

Ahhhh…summer! It’s time to go jump in a lake, explore a cool cavern or visit a local farmers market. The Ironstone Vineyards Summer Concert series as well as Free Concerts in the Park on Wednesday evenings are just some of the highlights of events that take place during this fun season! Summer events include: 4th of July Celebrations throughout the county 37th Annual Cedar Center Arts & Crafts Festival: July 4-5 16th Annual Cajun Fete Dinner and Dance: August 1 Family Fun Day at Calaveras Big Trees State Park: August 15 13th Annual Logging Jamboree: August 29-30 37th Annual Cedar Center Late Summer Arts & Crafts Festival: September 5-6 4th Annual Artists Studio Tour: September 26-27

E Clampus Vitus

History, humor and a helping hand come together in the form of an ancient Order unique to the Sierras. In the Gold Rush days of the mid-nineteenth century, thousands of mining camps and towns sprang up throughout the Sierra Nevada mountain range. If gold was found nearby, a new town would rise up overnight. A miner’s life was rugged, dangerous and often short, and for many a nomadic existence moving from one location to another in search of that precious yellow metal. For all but a few, their arduous labor produced scant reward. By 1850, both the Masonic Lodge and the Odd Fellows (IOOF) were well established in California. These fraternal organizations were groups of men of influence whose meetings required formal attire and provided little humor or relief from a days hard labor. In 1851, a group of men in Mokelumne Hill felt that another, less serious organization was needed and thus began “The Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus,” with an avowed dedication to the protection of “Widows and Orphans” in the west. Originally the order was a bit of a spoof, but soon grew like wildfire as chapters sprang up in nearly every mining community. Clampers banded together, supporting each other and caring for the families of killed and injured miners. E Clampus Vitus became a respected and honored men-only organization, and yet enjoyed a well deserved reputation as hard drinking pranksters. Modern day Clampers are dedicated to preserving western and mining history and have erected hundreds of historical markers and plaques to commemorate sites, people and events that played a role in our western heritage. Clampers will never retire their quest for fun, lest they be untrue to their heritage.
