The students had a GREAT EXPERIENCE. We appreciate your partnership. We would like to start recognizing all the BAPTISM birthday's of our children. If your child has been baptized, please get us the date. Churches have different beliefs about baptism. The Lutheran Church believes it is the start of the Spirit of God working in a person of any age for the forgiveness of sin through a little water and the word of God. We want to recognize all our children's baptism dates. To us it is as important as their birthday. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: What type of gifts has God given you? was the question posed to our eighth graders from Romans 12:6-10 & 1 Corinthians 12:4-6. Ash Patel responded "God has given me the gift of life. He has also given me a wonderful family. He has also given me the gift to learn and to help others." We praise God for Ash, her teachers and family that have brought her to this understanding. PICTURE DAY: Picture Day is Tuesday - October 22. Pre-School parents/guardians, if your child does not attend day care or Pre-school on Tuesdays, we ask that you make an exception for day care that day or we will work them into the photo rotation on that Tuesday morning between 8:30 and 9. FAMILY FUN NIGHT AND CHILI COOK-OFF: will be on Thursday, October 24. Dinner 5:00-6:30, Games from 6:00-8:00. Everyone in the church and school is invited to attend. Cook your favorite chili for the competition, come to eat, & bring the kids for games. The winner of the chili cook-off will receive a gift card! See the attached flyer for more information! OFFICE – MRS. ERICKSON: As we end this quarter, I say goodbye to the best office aides I’ve ever had! OK…they are the ONLY office aides I’ve ever had, but they were awesome! Thank you so much Ashley, Taryn, and Trenton for all of your hard work this 9 weeks; you have set the bar high for future aides! YOU ARE INVITED: You are invited! Please join us at the church fellowship hall at 2:00 on Sunday, October 20, for a bridal shower for Santana Cooper, bride-elect of Josh Schatte, Mrs. Schatte’s son. AND THE WINNER IS?: On FRIDAY-November 15, we are going to determine who has the highest and second highest number of AR points in every class. We will be giving $10 & $5 Gift Certificates to the 1st & 2nd place winners
respectfully in every grade. These certificates will be used in the Scholastic Book Fair that will be held at our school the following week. So get your child reading, comprehending, and earning those AR points. OCTOBER CHAPEL OFFERING: Our Chapel offerings for the month of October will be going to Lutheran World Relief. This organization will be helping victims of the flooding in Colorado, those affected by the hurricane in Mexico, continued efforts after the Moore tornado, and any other major catastrophes around the world. These offerings will only be for ONE month, so help as you can. DAR ESSAY CONTEST: The Daughters of the American Revolution are having an essay contest for students in grades 5-8. If your child is in grades 5-8 and is interested in entering the essay contest, have them contact their teacher or the school office for essay requirements. The deadline to enter is November 25, 2013. BAND: All band students will be traveling to Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Oct. 29, to hear the OKC Philharmonic perform a youth concert. Forms went home this week--please check your child's band folder for them. DRIVERS NEEDED! We have 20 students to transport; please consider driving that day. We'll leave at 8:45, eat our sack lunches when we arrive, and attend the concert at 11:40. It lasts about 40 min. When it's over we'll load up and head home, and should arrive back at school around 2:30. SUBSTITUTES NEEDED: If you, or someone you know, are willing to be a substitute teacher here at FLS, please contact the school office with your contact information so that we can get you on our list! PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: What a wonderful time we had at the pumpkin patch! Thanks Mrs. Kelly for putting that together for us. This week we are learning more about pumpkins and triangles. Picture day for BOTH classes is Tuesday the 22nd. Sorry I don't have the exact time yet but will try to let you know asap for children in the MWF class. Family Fun Night is next Thursday. We are needing volunteers to help in 30 min. shifts for the booths. Room moms will be contacting you soon or you can sign up in the classroom now. P/T conferences are next week as well. I would like to do as many as possible on Friday, and a letter should be attached to Starlites with your conference time. PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9, is our Bible verse this week. We are learning about forgiveness. We had a great time at the pumpkin patch on Friday, thank you parents for going and driving us! I also would like to thank the parents that drove and took care of another child! Parent Teacher conferences will be next week, I am sending home your scheduled time in backpacks today. Please sign and return the slip. We still need some workers for our booth at Family Fun Night, the sign up sheet is in our hallway next to the door. If you can't make it in to sign up, you can call Kristi Hunter or Betty Covey, or let me know and we will get you signed up. Our costume party will be on the 31st. I will send a note with details next week. We are learning about pumpkins this week. We do not have school Thursday and Friday. Have an awesome Fall Break! KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: Picture day is Tuesday, Oct. 22nd. Our Scholastic order is due by this Friday, Oct. 18th, so if you want to you still can order online using our code (DWY6G). Have a great Fall Break on Thursday and Friday! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: We had a great field trip last Friday!! Thank you to all of the parents for being there and being able to spend the day with your child. We are looking forward to fall break. I pray that everyone has a fun and restful time. Everyone did an amazing job, I am so proud of them. Next week is Parent/Teacher Conferences, I have sent home a blue piece of paper with your conference time, please sign it and get it back to me. If you need to change your time, write a note or come see me and we will work something out. Family Fun Night is just around the corner, they are asking our class to bring a bag of candy. You may drop it off in the office or just bring it to our class. Our field trip was amazing, thank you all for joining us and driving us. Have a wonderful fall break!! FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: Monday we took the STAR Reading test for the 2nd Quarter. Results with new goals will go home soon. This week we are seeing the Pioneer Women Museum, Marland Mansion and Marland’s home on grand. I will be going to a teacher conference, and will not be here for Parent Teacher Conferences. I will be having Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday. Look for the appointment sheet in today’s mail. 2

MIDDLE SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE ELECTIVES: The Middle School students received a listing of the courses to choose from for the next quarter. They are to provide the school with their 1st and 2nd choices and we will try to meet their requests. Please ensure that you have discussed these selections with your child. These forms are due to the school office by this Thursday - Oct. 10. Request for changes must be made thru Principal Birnbaum by Thursday - Oct. 24. FLSCA: FLSCA is committed to the pursuit of Christ-centered excellence in athletics, daily life, and to meet the needs of our FLS student athletes and all FLS students in their personal relationship with Christ. FLSCA will meet on Wednesday, October 16th at 7:30 am. All 6-8th graders that are involved with a sport, are interested in sports, or any middle school student interested in Christian enrichment are invited to join in on devotions, fellowship, and donuts from 7:30 - 8:00 am in Mr. Watters room in the middle school building. B.J. Keeter, Youth Minister at St. Luke’s, is our guest speaker. FLSCA meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month. First Lutheran students raised $1183.37 to donate to the Ponca City Humane Society. The classes that had the most points were 8th, 5th, and 1st. They will be receiving a class treat from the Student Council. Many thanks to Lisa Robinson and RCB Bank for their help with this project. And, special thanks, to all you students for participating. We’re now planning Red Ribbon Week (October 28 through Nov. 1) We’ll do the following dress up days for that week: Monday: Crazy Day; Tuesday: Twin Day; Wednesday: i-pod, Sports Day; Thursday: Costume Day (no scary costumes, please); Friday: PJ Day. We will also be sponsoring a Poster Contest. Students may make posters on regular copy paper. They will be due on October 23. Posters will be judged on using the theme, “Be Drug Free”; neatness, and color. StuCo will judge the posters and award a small prize to a winner for each class. Mrs. Harbeson: We're finally at the end of our 1st quarter. These past 9 weeks have just flown by! Get ready, because the second 9 weeks is the fastest quarter of the year! Thank you, Marcie Batschelett, Amy Marchesoni, and Laura Watts, for driving the 7th graders to Midwest City for our theater trip on Monday. We had a great time! Scholastic book orders were sent home last Friday. I have also attached a link to the Scholastic website at the bottom of my bulletin board. If you order books online, then I earn books for my classroom! Orders are due by Wednesday, October 23. Cheerleaders, the order form for our team sweats are due today. Did you turn yours in? Mrs. Hanson: 7th Grade Parents- Family Fun Night is coming up and we are in need of Parent volunteers to help set up and run the event! If you are willing and able, there is a sign up sheet in my room. 6th grade will be having a test this Wednesday! We have completed our book review which we will go over in class Monday, and we will have a review game Tuesday. The book review should be used as a study guide. It is the exact same format as the test and covers all the material for the test. 7th grade's Life of a Rock projects turned out awesome! I was very pleased. We are continuing our chapter on rocks. 8th grade is studying cells. We have created factories that represent the cell and all its organelles. Ask your student what their factory produced and how! We will be doing another big project here soon. So keep an eye out for a project description. Mrs. Goll: I will be gone to the Lutheran Educator’s Association Convocation on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24 & 25. (I think that will be the first time in 40 years that I have NOT walked at the cake walk.) Lori Holle will sub on Thursday and, of course, I will be unavailable for conferences on Friday. If you’d like to meet for a conference about 3
your studentâ€™s progress in math, please call me and we can meet on Monday or Tuesday evening either of the next two weeks or we can set another time that will work for you. Overall, the grades for quarter one math look quite good. Math may be slightly more challenging in this next quarter as we do less review and more new concepts. Have a great Fall Break!
