PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: What a great way to start the new year! The high school survey went out to the middle school students concerning the possible opening of a freshman high school class this coming fall. Be sure to return your surveys to me by Friday, January 31. For more information, please call anytime. SCHOOL OFFICE – Mrs. Erickson: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2013 for tax purposes, please send me a FastDirect-mail or call the school at 762-9950. Remember that not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot. LATE FEES: Effective January 1, 2014, a $10 late fee will automatically be assessed monthly after the 16 th, for any outstanding balance. If you need your login id or password to check your balances online, please contact the school office at 762-9950. Remember that you can pay by cash, check, bank draft, or credit card; you can even call the office and we will run your credit card over the phone! Please call the office if you have any questions! CHAPEL OFFERING: Our offerings for the third quarter will be going to Lutheran World Relief (LWR). LWR is helping with recovery after Typhoon Haiyan; they provide ongoing help for the malaria problem in Africa; and they provide farmers with animals and plants to help them be more self-sufficient. Please give generously. TUTORING: Remember that we offer tutoring on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s in the middle school math room from 3:30 – 4:30; it is available for any students in grades 4-8th, no prior notice is needed, and it is free! If you need a little extra help with a subject, please stop by! MENU CHANGE: On your school menu, please swap the 22 nd menu for the 17th. Thanks! CHEERLEADING: Way to go, Jill Jackson! Jill joined us at our pep rally and games on Monday night as our auction cheerleader, and she did a great job! We have another chance for all students pre-school through 6th grade to participate in cheer. The FLS mini-cheer clinic is scheduled for January 28 through February 3. Everyone participating in the cheer clinic will receive a t-shirt, poms, and will perform at our next pep rally and games on February 4. A sign-up sheet IS attached to this week's Chatter. We hope you can join us for a week of learning and fun! HI FELLOW CARDINALS!: I am Adam Hoak (a FLS graduate and Cardinal as well) and I am currently working on my Eagle Scout Project. I am putting up three park benches and a trash receptacle along the basketball court on 4th Street. I am asking for donations because each bench costs around $400. The PTL has kindly given me $500, but I still need to raise around $1,400 so that I can complete my project and build the benches. If you would like to donate, checks should be made out to First Lutheran (so that they are tax deductible) and may be dropped off at the school office. Thank you for your support! PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: It was wonderful to have a recess outdoors! Going in the gym is nice but nothing beats getting out in the fresh air and lots of room to stretch. P/T conferences Monday-don't forget to contact me this week if you would like to visit. We are trying to settle back into a normal routine after our long break. This second half of the school year will have a greater emphasis on academics and the skills needed to prepare for PK. Our theme this week is "Nursery Rhymes", the letter "L", and the number 8. PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Carter! Muffins with Moms is tomorrow, I hope to see you all! Report cards were due back to me today; we still have a few out. Please sign and return them as soon as possible. Book orders 1
are due to me or online by Friday, the 17th. We have a case of the flu in our classroom, if your child is running a fever please keep them at home and get them checked for the flu. We will not have school on Monday the 20th. Look for the note today about Parent/Teacher Conferences. We will be going to the Stephen Fite concert in April. The note and permission slip is in backpacks today. Please return it to me with your payment by Monday, February 3rd. Our Bible words this week are, [Jesus said,] I am the light of the world. John 9:5. We are learning the letter "M" this week. KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: We don't have school next Monday the 20th because of parent/teacher conferences. I will only have conferences if I feel it is necessary or if it is requested by a parent. Please contact me if you would like to schedule a conference. Today I sent conference forms home so please look for them. I still need a few report cards back so please sign them and send them back to school, thank you. Please keep working hard on your "Monday Folders". Our "Book It" goal this January is reading 20 books and they are due by the 31st. Have a spectacular week! Parents please look for a Field Trip sheet in your child's backpack. FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday - Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out. Acts 3:19. There is no school on Monday, January 20. Parent/Teacher conferences will be scheduled if needed. Please see your pink note that was sent home today. Book orders were also sent home today. Orders are due on Tuesday, January 21. Remember to keep recording your minutes of reading and send in your totals on Mondays for us to record. Keep reading and have a great week! SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: We are happy to welcome Bo Lorenz to our class! I'm very proud of the children for showing Jesus' love as we help Bo to learn our routines. We've begun to work on writing our names in cursive. Please see the special note attached to this issue regarding conferences on Monday, January 20. Blessings! THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: What beautiful weather we are having! Please send a jacket or coat with your child each day as we will be going outside in the mornings if the weather is nice. This week: Memory: First Commandment and its meaning: You shall have no other Gods. What does this mean: we should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. Reading: Test on Friday along with Spelling. Math: We had a test on Monday and everyone did well, keep up the great work! We have started working on multiplication facts 0,1,2,5,10. We will be working on these in class, but extra work at home will help even more. Parent/Teacher Conferences: Remember that we have no school on Monday, January 20th. I will be here from 8-12 if anyone wants to come and talk with me. Have a wonderful three day weekend!! FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: Happy Birthday this past Sunday to Ally R! We had a great time celebrating with you. We are back into the swing of school. Keep practicing math facts and concepts. Rose Hill is less than a week away, and we are all excited! If adults need to borrow clothes for Rose Hill, please come in and pick something out. Don’t forget the price for Rose Hill is for adults also, and the class picture is optional. Keep reading for AR & Book It. Don’t forget book orders are due tomorrow! Fill in the blank memory for 01/22/14 is “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear not evil, for You are with me.” Psalm 23:4 FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: Memory work for Thursday is verses 1-3 of the 23rd Psalm. Next Thursday, 1-23, the entire 23rd Psalm is due. The only tests this week are spelling and reading on Friday. Congratulations to Nate, Katie, and David for representing our class in the school spelling bee. Have an awesome week!

MATHCOUNTS: Please consider joining us for MathCounts on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30. We work on some interesting math challenges AND there’s always food!! ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE (team sports, cheerleading, or other extra-curricular activities): Effective immediately, students involved in extra-curricular activities will have their grade status evaluated at the beginning of every three weeks. A student who has a grade below 70% in any subject will be put on probation. During that time, the student will be given an opportunity to raise the grade above 69.9%. The student must take action to raise the grade. Failure to raise the grade will 2
result in suspension from the extra-curricular activity until the next three week grade check. After the first probationary period, a student will be suspended from the extra-curricular activity when any grade drops below 70%. Suspensions are enforced and lifted on the first school day of the week. (Any students failing a subject on their report card will be suspended from extra-curricular activities until all grades are passing at the three week check point.) STUDENT COUNCIL: Thanks, Student Council, for sponsoring a super dance. Special thanks go to the Jacksons, Redwines, and Smiths for help with decorations and chaperoning. Scott Jackson is a great DJ! We welcome our second semester Student Council Representatives: Daylan, Bree, Kinsey, Emma, Morgan, Tyler, Zac, Hayli, and Bobbi Jo. We'll have our first meeting on Thursday at 2:00. 8th GRADE PEPPERETTE DANCE: Tickets for the 8th Grade Pepperette Dance will be sold during middle school lunch period (12:30) on February 11th and 13th in the cafeteria. See flyers in the middle school for details. Mrs. Harbeson: Language: Congratulations to all those students who met their AR goal for the 2nd quarter! Wade Lessert with Dominos pizza provided lunch for us today to help recognize and celebrate the hard work of the 24 middle school students who met 100% of their goal. I hope that we have more students meet their goal during the 3rd quarter, so be sure to read AND take your tests! I'd also like to say good job to all those students who made the teachers' and principal's honor roll last quarter. You worked diligently and deserve the recognition you received this morning at chapel. In language, we continue on in our novels and in grammar. For more specific information about your assignments, I encourage you to check out my bulletin board. That's all for now...blessings to you and your family! Mrs. Hanson: I am very impressed with all the students! We have had hardly any late assignments the first week back to school!! This is awesome! Let's make this a habit and have no late assignments all semester! I have given a little incentive to those students who have no late work; they will be given a "homework pass" for the next chapter, good for one assignment, excluding vocabulary and the final review. Sickness hit FLS hard last week. If your student missed any school last week, make sure they have checked in with all teachers to get any missed work. 8th Grade and 6th Grade should be expecting a quiz sometime this week. 6th Grade will also have a project on Newton's Laws of Motion. A project description will be given by the end of the week. A due date will be decided by that time as well. Mrs. Goll: We're off to a good start with the third quarter. Most of the students who struggle with grades in any subject do so because they do not complete their work in a timely manner. Late work really damages grades and learning. Please encourage your child to make his school work a priority. In many classes, students have adequate work time to complete the school work during the class hour IF they stay focused and ask questions as needed. We'll have conferences on Monday. If we did not schedule a conference with you and you would like to meet, please call or FastDirect and we'll schedule a time. Algebra students tested on Tuesday and did GREAT! We will continue to work on graphing equations. All math students are working with integers and equations. Remembering the rules for math operations with negative numbers can be tricky; a few minutes reviewing the rules each evening would be helpful. Have a blessed week growing in the Lord. Mr. Watters: Remember that the new eligibility rules apply starting this quarter; keep an eye on your grades in FastDirect. If you find yourself slipping in a class, work hard to get that grade up before you become ineligible. Remember that we have tutoring after school on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 3:30-4:30 in the math room if you need extra help.
