ARTIST STATEMENT

Art Critic, Sawyer J. Lahr wrote: “The effect appears pencil drawn but has a living, breathing, sculpture-esque dimension emphasized by the black backgrounds, creating a positive and negative space rarely seen in life surrounding floras.” I began taking classes at the School of the Art Institute Chicago at twelve years old, every weekend was spent entrenched in painting, drawing and sculpting. As an adult, I spent years working as a Graphic Designer and Art Director, always consumed by the humble line and its relationship to the fundamentals of design. Magnifying glass in hand, I capture nuances in nature that simply don’t exist with the naked eye. After studying my subject, I jump right in, spontaneously drawing fine lines with an X-ACTO knife into boards made of clay and India ink. My series, Environmental Movement, is heavily influenced by Eco-Psychology, the study of emotional connections between humans and the natural world. My art produces the same feelings of wonder, harmony and timelessness that we experience when connecting with nature. Spontaneous Combustion creates the illusion of 3 dimensions by layering line over line. I describe this abstract series as Lyrical Expressionism. My goal is to elicit the same feelings for the viewer that I get while watching my exquisite patterns emerge. Interaction and Clearly Interacting are composed of free form figures working together to create a barrier against ignorance and fear. Some of my drawings are done on clear panels, others on scratchboards. All are designed to visually develop multiple layers of interaction between one another. BIOGRAPHY

Lisa Goesling microscopically penetrates nature and abstracts for their aesthetic value. She creates hyper-detailed renderings of her observations on an untraditional support, rather than the expected canvas or paper, she uses black scratchboards that are composed of Kaolin Clay covered with India ink. Exquisitely meticulous visions unfold through her painstaking technique. Using an X-ACTO knife, she etches her design on the black surface in through which the image bursts forth from the white clay. In some instances, colored inks will be added to give luster and depth to her ecological visions. The passion for making art came early for Ms. Goesling. She began taking art classes at the School of the Art Institute Chicago at the age of twelve. Before devoting herself full-time as an artist, she ran her own graphic design firm. Over the past decade she has won prestigious awards and fellowships, and her work has been requested for countless exhibitions throughout the country. Ms. Goesling assiduously presents botanic elements in her art; a leaf replete of intricate patterns, tree bark of variegated textures, and cabbage formed of black and white ripples. Nature is the catalyst for her art, paying tribute to our living ecology, capturing fleeting forms for eternity. In some instances, she adapts nature’s lines into abstract images that pay homage to their botanic core. Lisa Goesling recently completed solo exhibitions at the Union League Club of Chicago and Northwestern University’s Dittmar Gallery. She was awarded an Artist Residency at The Studios of Key West in March/April 2017 and completed a two year Artist Residency at the Merchandise Mart of Chicago. Domini Iacono, Director of Syracuse University Galleries awarded her Best of Show in the Less is More-Small works Show at the Mitchell Gallery in Annapolis, MD. New York Art Critic, Jill Conner awarded both the Award of Excellence and Critic’s Choice Award in the 2013 Manhattan Arts International Competition. Her artwork, Inside of an Iris is on the front cover of New York Times Bestseller, Colum McCann’s novel, TransAtlantic, (European Release), winner of the 2015 D&AD Award of Excellence, London, England. Her art, Detail of a Grape Leaf appears on a variety of labels for Encendido Wine, Argentina. The manufacturers of Scratchboard, Ampersand Art Supply, awarded her the 2013 Ampersand Art Material Award and purchased her art for their permanent collection. Ms Goesling was featured on Sergio Gomez’ Art NXT Level Projects April 2016 Podcast and wound up in the top five most downloaded podcasts. She was also a featured artist in ACS Magazine. Lisa Goesling’s art is in public and private collections worldwide. She is represented by Vivi Art Gallery, Winnetka, Water Street Studios, Batavia and SAATCHI Art online.

PRESS SAMPLES

“…Lisa Goesling’s floral etching on Scratchboards reaches into the dark abyss of space while defining the depth parameters with lyrical petals and foliage seen on iris blossoms. Inside of an Iris is a dissection of the various surfaces that piece together this multi-layered flower. By approaching her subjects on different visual levels, as seen here, Goesling commits to gray-scale bringing the viewer into the subtle tones of layers. Blossoms and stems unwind in a circular pattern as if arranged upon a flat surface. Yet Goesling’s use of lyricism in line suggests a series of performative moments that spin boundlessly.” Jill Conner: New York Critic, Board Member of AICA, Editor of Whitehot Magazine and On-Verge, Contributor to Art in America, Interview Magazine, Performance Art Journal and Sculpture Magazine/New York, City, NY “…Lisa Goesling’s Black Scratchboard of floral compositions has a Durer-esque level of detail and care.” John Coyle Steinbrunner: Art Critic, Fear No Art/Chicago, IL “…Lisa Goesling is an exceptional artist with superior technical and creative talents. As a juror and Director of Manhattan Arts International, it has been a privilege to select her as an award-winning artist. I feel honored to know her and be acquainted with her artwork.” Renee Phillips: Author, Writer, Director & Curator/New York, NY “…Lisa Goesling is not only a wonderful artist, skillful at her work, but she is also a fabulous teacher. Lisa makes learning art enjoyable and tangible. She is thoughtful about her process and able to explain her work to new learners and collectors. Lisa is also forward thinking for the art industry in working towards helping move Scratch Art into galleries and international collections. Her award winning art is stunning and her story amazing. What a pleasure to get to know her better and write about her work.” Karyn Meyer-Berthel: Artist & Social Specialist/Ampersand Art Supply/Buda, TX “…Lisa Goesling is an artist/designer innovative and monumentally endowed with a great talent. Soothsayer in her hand, Durer likes virtuosity and sensitivity. Refinement of Alphonse Mucha without implying any comparison or resemblance as its originality is beyond dispute. It has been my great pleasure to meet her. She is a guarantee for the art world, knowing that the tradition of the great classic design (which endures through time) is safe in her prodigious hands.” Angel Muriel: Artist/Madrid, Spain “…Lisa’s amazing art was on exhibit in my Envision Art Gallery in Chicago from Sept. – November 2013. This was the last show and it was such a joy to have Lisa bring her beautiful art into my space as a celebration of all that had been accomplished over the years the gallery was open. Lisa titled the exhibit, Just Scratching the Surface, which completely speaks to her work. From meeting Lisa to the end of the show, her professionalism was remarkable. She worked closely with our gallery assistant, always mindful of the gallery’s needs and showed a refreshing ability to be flexible. The selection of art and curating was Lisa’s sole decision and the outcome was absolutely flawless.” Julia M. Rahn, Ph.D.: Envision Gallery and Studio/Chicago, IL

“…WOW, unbelievable skill and strength to control the mind during such an intense process. Fantastic talent is rare, thank you Renee Phillips, (Manhattan Arts International) for sharing-and giving us all a moment to view and experience such skill and brilliance. To work like Lisa does with this medium is a constant leap of faith. To let go of judgment while working and creating is a profoundly difficult thing to achieve as an artist in the moment. But once she starts, there is no going back, only forward-exposing the image, as if in a subtractionist method-as if she were sculpting. Just thrilling, I am truly blown away by the skill and control, and the vast freedom that is seen as the images are exposed, stunning!” Best to you, Lisa. To the woman with few fears, I would imagine, yeah again to women, and our strength to persevere with such grace. Shray Bronze: USA, recipient ‘Five Rings Award’ Beijing Olympics For The Arts, Award winning International Master Bronze Sculptor/San Francisco, CA “…The effect appears pencil drawn but has a living, breathing, sculpture-esque dimension emphasized by the black backgrounds, creating a positive and negative rarely seen in life surrounding floras.” Sawyer J. Lahr: Art Critic/Chicago, IL “…Artist Lisa Goesling has an amazing body of work, with a signature “close look” at nature. Not only technically skilled, Lisa has a great eye for creating appealing work for art lovers. I have often used her website as a wonderful example of how artists should present themselves and their art to the world.” Carolyn Edlund: Executive Director of the Arts Business Institute, Business Consultant/New York, NY “…Lisa is an exceptionally dedicated artist. Her art is magnificent, the best I’ve ever seen. Her remarkable eye for detail in her work is just fabulous, as is her judgment and personality.” Alex Thijssens: Artist, Adjunct Professor, William Patterson University/Ringwood, NJ “…Lisa has taken a classic subject-botanical drawings, and made it not only fresh and new, but made it completely her own. The work is original and strikingly beautiful. I know that for me, it makes me look at foods and plants in a completely different way. As far as Lisa as a person, she is a wonderful collaborator, a kind and supportive member of the arts community, and a generally good human being. She actively participates in a variety of arts community activities, and is always willing to help other artists.” Susan Aurinko: Award Winning Photographer, Curator, Published Artist, Founder of FLATFILE galleries, Founder of f8collective.
