INTRODUCTION

Chicago University The heritage of Chicago University stems from the history of Chicago architecture. Which is where the university motto comes from. The motto of Chicago University is "The sky's not the limit, it's just the view." To understand the function and value of the Chicago University identity, it is important to recognize that every organization has a specific public identity—an identity partly formed by the look of its printed materials, stationery, website, etc. Each element of communication contributes to the overall impression people have of the organization. When an organization’s identification program is a coordinated one, it projects a unified character which works effectively to reinforce all of its activities. In many cases, it also helps the organization to be more cost-effective in its communication efforts by simplifying certain decision-making processes. The purpose of this manual is to explain the components of the Chicago University visual identity program, to define its graphic design standards, and to illustrate how these standards are applied. Many of the standards depend on relative size, proportion, and

UNIVERSITY IDENTITY

University Logo

CHICAGO UNIVERSITY “Chicago” must always be placed in a rectangular container

“University” must always be placed right next to “Chicago” without a rectangular container around it

The Chicago University logo is the approved relationship between the words “Chicago” and “University” These two components are always placed in a fixed relationship and should never be altered, modified or reproduced in any way. The Chicago University logo should appear prominently in all communication materials created by the university and its units. In using the name of the university—in any and all media—use “Chicago University.” Always use these formal, official versions of the university name; never use “CU.”

6

Logo Clearspace

x

CHICAGO UNIVERSITY x= 50% of height of rectangular container

The Chicago University logo should always be positioned in such a way as to allow for a distance of no less than 50 percent of the height of the logo’s rectangular container (containing the white “drop-out” text) to remain clear. This distance is designated by "X" in the diagram to the left. All graphics, pictures, and typography, and other elements must fall outside of the area indicated by the red dashed lines shown. The rule of thumb for determining the required protected area in relation to the size of the logo is as follows: If x = 50 percent of height of logo words, then the protected areas on the left and right sides of the logo are also x.

7

Logo Minimum Size

CHICAGO UNIVERSITY Preferred/Standard Size 4.5"

CHICAGO UNIVERSITY Minimum Size 2.5"

To preserve the integrity of the Chicago University’s visual identity, we must ensure that the logo is always recognizable and readable, and that the visual identity stands out from other design elements. Reproductions below this size are not permitted since the letter forms may begin to fill in, thereby compromising readability. The minimum allowable reproduction size for the logo is shown at the left, with the width measured from the left edge to the right edge of the logo. The preferred/standard size (when possible) for the logo is 4.5 inches wide. The minimum size for the logo in most applications is 2.5 inches in width. The maximum size is essentially unlimited. Exceptions to the maximum size include banners, displays, and posters, or external usage.

CHICAGO UNIVERSITY Light Gray

Color is essential to the Chicago University style. The range of colors in which the logo can be reproduced is limited to blue, dark gray, and light gray. These primary identity colors evolved from Chicago University's historic palette, creating a rich and seamless tie to its heritage. When using the Chicago University logo on a dark or colored background, please use the light gray logo with the white "drop-out" text on the rectangular container, and the light gray text next to the rectangular container. Secondary Identify Colors Black and White may be used when the primary identity colors are not available.

The use of color is an important aspect of the Chicago University identity. The colors blue, dark gray, and light gray are associated with architecture materials. The blue represents the grid and the blueprint. The grays represent the material of steel as well as drafting lines. When combined they evoke the spirit of innovation. The corporate blue or grays should be used for the rectangular container behind "Chicago", as well as the color of "University" beside the rectangular container. The symbol should never be used in red, orange, green or any other distinctive color.

Dear Jim Freshman, In many ways, Chicago University has been distinct from day one: enlarging the scope of higher education to meet the needs of society, embracing the urban energy instead of cloistering itself, valuing hard work and merit over contentment and connection, and focusing on the future rather than fixating on the past. As you look around Chicago University, you will see an astonishing amount of students and faculty exploring new ideas, pursuing new knowledge, creating new art, and filling our classrooms with the vibrancy that comes from being an institution that is committed to research, discovery, creativity, and innovation. ATHLETICS

Athletic Logo

CHICAGO

Consistent use of the Chicago Hail logo ensures that Chicago University has a uniform appearance to current and prospective students, parents, alumni, the media, trustees, faculty, professional staff, fans of its athletic teams and the greater Chicago community. Each constituency plays a vital role in supporting our athletes; clear communication with those constituencies is paramount. A standardized logo also helps Chicago University’s athletic teams and programs project a unified, organized, and professional appearance. The sharp shapes represent hail and ice because it is a symbol of danger and damage. Our athletic teams seem to have that sort of competitiveness with their superior athletic play. The Hail logo reserved strictly for use by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and its entities. The Athletics spirit marks should never be used in place of the Chicago University logo or in communications representing the university’s academic areas.

34

Logo Clearspace The Chicago Hail logo should always be positioned in such a way as to allow for a distance of no less than 50 percent of the height of the logo to remain clear.
