This site is an abandoned historic harbor district which has close relationship with local city culture. instead of completely rebuild method, the retrofit with partly new-built consturaction method is applied in this project. according to the conditions and space of the existing buildings, the possibility of refit could be figured out. And then eliminate the buildings which could no longer be used, take room for some new-built project simultaneously. And finally get this abandoned historic harbor activated again and make it a new urban cultural complex.

retrofit the space facing business street has a relatively high activation while the opposite which facing the harbor has a relatively low one. according to the static and dynamic partitions use permutation and combination methods, so that renewed function would be applied to the old shop space.

w i t h t h e a n a ly s i s o f s i t e wat e r f l o w condition, the weakest points can be f i g u r e d o u t . t h e y m a i n ly s h o w u p i n some water turning points and channel narrowing area, since in these area the water speed would increase obviously and dramatically. and the density of the functional wetland system components would also go up in response to the water flow change. most of the dangerous dwelling area would be transformed to wetland system, while some safe ones will still be remained and new built wetland system would connect them in an organic way. and finally it will form itself a new functional system.

concept instead of traditional way of organizing dwelling sapce, this design introducs "floating boxes" system. the dwellings types could be free-combined according t o o c u p pa n t s ' p s y c h o l o g y a n d personality. type a: completely independent space design o f f e r s t h e t o t a l ly i n d e p e n d e n t work and living space without the disturbance from neighbors. it is designed for those who are introvert and prefer stay alone. type b: t h e " f l o at i n g b o x " a c t i n g a s t h e entertainment space connects two independent apartments. It increases the activity within the dwellings and creats a semi-independent space for those who need communication between neighbors as well as private space. type c: two semi-independent apartments are connected by two or even more "floating boxes" between them. it maximizes the sociality of the apartments. it provides the outrovert persons more opportunities to communicate and share their living space.

This new custom modern home sits on a 2-acre site that is located on a ridge above Coldwater Canyon with striking views of Century City and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The residence is conceived as a series of pavilions, cantilevers and framed views that link the interior spaces, the exterior spaces, the views and the gardens together into a series of unique indoor-outdoor experiences. The entry court is framed by a r e f l e c t i n g p o o l a n d pav i l i o n s o f glass, stone and wood. One steps up and over the reflecting pool and into the main foyer, which frames a view of the swimming pool to the South and downtown LA to the East. Aligned with the foyer is a 25' wide x 75' long pool that cantilevers out over the ridge, framing and extending one's view out over the City.

To the East is a covered outdoor living room that frames views of Downtown LA. This outdoor room is conceived as an extension of the glass enclosed main living/ entertaining area, with the teak ceiling extending from interior to exterior. To the West of the main foyer are formal dining, kitchen, family areas and a guest bedroom/ office pavilion. The lower floor is comprised of garage and service spaces, cinema, gym, game rooms and additional bedrooms opening out onto lower terrace, garden and orchard areas. From these spaces the house is linked c l o s e ly t o t h e a d j a c e n t g a r d e n spaces. While living and entertaining spaces on the main two levels frame spectacular views in every direction, on these lower floors the connections to the hillside gardens are more tactile and direct. The second floor comprises four additional en-suite bedrooms and a luxurious master bedroom suite and terrace. From the master bedroom terrace one ascends to the roof deck/ spa area.

project is a multi-family apartment whihc located in the Barry, West Los Angeles, California. designers approached the project by subtracting the larger program areas from a solid volumetric form that conformed to the zoning regulations and sought to maximize space, light, and views while also creating a sense of privacy and retreat for the owners.
