It is 2020. A student at the primary school teacher’s training college logs on to the portal of The Hague University of Applied Sciences from a deckchair on her sundeck at home. She can now attend a lecture being transmitted through livestream on her Ipad 9. At the end of the lecture, a number of options pop up: attend another lecture by a professor from the USA with the latest information about teaching methods, go to a virtual chat room to participate in a discussion with her teacher and classmates, take a digital exam for a course she finished two days ago or start a game in which she, represented by her Avatar, has to teach a class full of recalcitrant children. The possibilities are endless, and the choice is hers. This is the new method of learning in practice. It is 2010. Education advisor for ICT Karin van Bakel is working on an innovative project at THU: digital exams. The education advisor expects the results of the pilot to become available in March 2010.

De mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos, de keuze is aan haar. Dit is het nieuwe leren in de praktijk.

During a debate held on 24 September as part of the ‘New Ways of Living, Working and Learning’ event organised by the Academy for Facility Management, Rob Brons, chairman of the Executive Board, posed the following theory: ‘The 1.0 version of students and teachers in 2010 is truly a different species from the 2.0 version of 2020.’ He believes that students are becoming increasingly used to absorbing information; it is teachers’ task to put this information in perspective. ‘The teacher of the
