Winter Greetings Winter has definitely arrived in the Cape and so have the winter rains. As a Link-Up community, we have probably acclimatised to the pandemic, the parliamentary debates, and the compromised economy; and perhaps some of us are girding up for activating a new season to expand our creative work together – trusting that our readers relate to what I am saying here?

for Life website – www.soilforlife.co.za – and if you’re able, their food garden and shop.

At the Link-Up office, we have been working on a new website, keen to broaden our reach, and always open to your ideas. Our new staff member, Michele Henderson, has certainly added much to the administrative care of the project. We will fill our publications with themes and memes in the coming year keenly finding ways to inspire you, our valued readers, while at the same time linking you up with recommended and reputable contributors in the field of holistic wellbeing. We are excited to welcome a new social media team who will be working with us... more on that soon.

A big shout out to Link-Up friends for adding new GIVEAWAYS to the Winter GIFT BASKET for our readers – these include - a super lifestyle consultation, a wellbeing reiki session and two fabulous books. The lucky recipients of our Summer GIFT BASKET were: Talana Edwoods, Aniela Batschari, Yasmin and Evelyn Stroud.

Our Winter theme is ‘Back to Heart & Earth’ – we delightedly note that ‘both words contain the same letters’. In this issue, enjoy dreaming your food garden into being for next Spring just around the corner with the help of our friends from ‘Soil for Life’ featured on the back page. Now is the perfect time to plan your “wellbeing” inside and outside. Get your hands into the soil, restore your soul self, your mental health and at the same time, our beloved mother-earth. We encourage you to visit Soil

A special shout-out to Zephne van der Merwe, who will be cutting back her work-load in the Link-Up project. We wish her well with all her flourishing projects. Thank you for costewarding Link-Up since the Spring of 2018! We wish you our readers, advertisers, friends and associates a slower healthy rhythm for Winter with good hibernation, rejuvenation and re-creation.

Early Detection Saves Life

Breast Cancer and celebrating health in August Women’s Month The Good News is that with current sciences and technologies, treatment has become less invasive and more effective. Screening, diagnostic devices and treatments are evolving targeting different types of breast cancers. There is a broad range of screening and diagnostic methods including SureTouch and Thermo Imaging, with immunotherapy coming up as a future treatment. The key to meeting cancer is early detection, combined with best treatment. SELF BREAST EXAMINATION (SBE) The most important way for monitoring your own breast health is self examination. Monthly SBE will help you find any changes and detect the area. Your menstrual cycle can affect the hardness of masses in your breast, so timing of examinations is key. The best time to examine yourself is two weeks later than the start of your menstrual cycle, not the week before nor the week after. What are you looking for? In short, a hard and defined mass. Normally rough. Cancer does not usually hurt but it can if there is an infection around it.

SOME TIPS FOR SELF BREAST EXAMINATION Lie down with your arm above your head, using a cream and the flat of the top of your fingers. Remember to squeeze behind your nipple and even check between your breasts.

contact on: 078 642 1422 www.babetzalennox.co.za

10 to 15% of breast cancer is lobular where milk is produced, which is at the lower outer region of your breast. About 75 to 80% of cancer is ductal, the storage areas from your lobules to and around your nipple. Tubular carcinoma is around 4% and there are numerous other types of breast cancer, making up the final 6%. The only mobile carcinoma is a complex cyst, with cancer in the wall of the cyst, again it is relatively hard. Our lymphatic system plays an important role. Uncomfortable swelling under your arm could be an infection but it may be a warning sign of breast cancer. There are also lymph nodes for your breasts in the area of your collar bone and at the sides of your breasts. If this sore swelling does not go away after a few weeks, please see your doctor. Visual warning signs include a dimple on your breasts, an inverted nipple, unless your nipples are naturally inverted, a hard defined lump near the surface but normally deeper in your breast. A few warning signs with the skin, such as a sore, a blushing effect, an orange peel effect and multiple dimples. Your nipple will also change the direction it points, as the breast cancer grows. A discharge from the nipple, which can be clear, milky or with some blood in it must be checked. It is however normal to have one breast slightly larger than the other. Your breast health is your responsibility and it is important to do your monthly self breast examination and go for an annual breast check-up when over forty or have a family history. An annual digital or clinical breast examination could help you find breast cancer early. Don’t be scared, be proactive and minimise the risk. Early detection saves lives…….!

Growing healthy soil, people and communities The earth is facing an unprecedented environmental crisis which is severely impacting the health of our planet and the lives that exist within it. One of the many consequences of the crisis is food insecurity. Food insecurity is driven by the inability of households to buy food and also by their lack of access to nutrient-rich food. Limited access to nutritious food in the correct quantities has multiple impacts including malnutrition, child stunting, and increased vulnerability to infectious and chronic diseases. Soil for Life believes that EVERYONE has the potential to create sustainable food gardens that build healthy, fertile soils and promote maximum production of safe, nutritious vegetables in any available space. The gardening methods we use in our community programmes and at our own Resource Centre in Constantia (Cape Town) focus on reinvigorating soil, saving water, improving biodiversity, creatively recycling and reusing waste, and ensuring that no damage is done to human or environmental health. Since the start of our community programmes in 2002, over 7,600 people have participated in food gardening

training. This has provided the potential for approximately 45,600 people (the gardeners, their families, friends and neighbours) to benefit from having access to healthy nutritious vegetables and knowledge about health and nutrition. Soil for Life runs two community programmes: • A Home Food Gardening Programme that teaches people in low-income communities how to grow food at home. The programme is made possible through the income we generate from our Resource Centre in Constantia and support from donors. • A Community Food Gardening Programme that teaches groups of people at community centres and schools how to grow food for their feeding schemes and/or to generate income. The programme is made possible through funding partners that cover the cost of training, mentorship, and inputs to establish the gardens. During our training and support programmes, participants are taught how to grow food in all available spaces and how to identify and use the waste around them in their gardens. Organic waste – from teabags, to hair clippings, to shells and natural fibres – is returned to the soil to build humus and soil fertility, and large amounts of other waste is fashioned into tools and equipment needed in the garden. This approach provides an environmentally beneficial way of disposing of the city’s waste and a cost-effective way of building healthy soil teeming with microbial life and able to give high yields of quality food from small spaces.

To find out more about Soil for Life’s offerings, please visit our website www.soilforlife.co.za or contact Natalie at info@soilforlife.co.za https://www.instagram.com/soilforlife/ https://www.facebook.com/soilforlife/ https://twitter.com/SoilForLife 7

The group format of training provides a platform where people from diverse cultures integrate and communicate through a common interest. Strong networks and support systems develop in and between different communities, creating positive environments for poverty reduction (e.g. selling surplus food, swopping produce, using the Community Exchange System to barter surplus produce for other services). The ability to grow food takes many people from a place where they can only provide their families with nutrient-poor starchy meals to those packed with a variety of fresh vegetables, new colours and textures. It also enables them to create small “green” patches of salvation in their communities and gives many a sense of purpose and pride that they have not experienced before. Soil for Life’s Resource Centre is a major component of its income-generating activities. It houses an organic vegetable, herb and fruit garden; a nursery; compost-making and vermicomposting facilities; and two venues for training workshops. Income is generated through sales to the public and retail outlets as well as through gardening workshops and team building programmes.

Get involved in helping raise money to fund our community programmes... It will also prepare you for fighting off pests and diseases with natural remedies. The workshops are 2-hours long, held on Wednesday mornings and are aimed at people who want to grow their knowledge on specific topics.
