Sir Peter Blake statues return to Promenade

Blackpool Council’s Great Promenade Show on South Promenade can now boast the return of two sculptures designed by legendary artist Sir Peter Blake.

The Council has been working with sculpture specialists AB Fine Art Foundry to re-install the ‘Life as a Circus’ piece of artwork on the Promenade across from the Pleasure Beach. The artwork consists of two sculptures, ‘Four Man Up’ and ‘Equestrian Act’. The two statues depict balancing acts as seen in a circus, of strongmen, horses and a mermaid, each reaching around 10ft in height.

Blackpool Council has been working to recreate the statues after they were damaged in 2011, and remould them in a material that holds no value to metal thieves.

Cllr Christine Wright, cabinet member for culture and heritage at Blackpool Council said: ‘We are delighted to bring Sir Peter’s works back to the Promenade where they can be appreciated as part of a wonderful stroll along the Great Promenade Show. Blackpool is very proud of its high quality public art works that everyone can enjoy, many being made by internationally recognised artists. The Great Promenade Art Show along with works such as our award winning ‘Comedy Carpet’ by Gordon Young, are part of the many unique cultural experiences Blackpool has to offer.’

Following the replacement of the statues, the Great Promenade Show now consists of 10 pieces of artwork along Blackpool Promenade, 24

including works such as the Mirrorball and Glam Rocks and now joined on the Tower Headland by the award winning Comedy Carpet outside the Blackpool Tower. The show is generally thought of as an outdoor art gallery reflecting Blackpool’s history and character, with the works commissioned from both established and emerging artists. The original bronze statues have also been restored and will return to a secure space within the town in the near future.

Sir Peter Blake

Sir Peter Blake is widely regarded as the father of pop art. He studied at Gravesend School of Art before being accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Art in London. His work extends across a diverse range of media including watercolour, drawings, prints, collage, painting, and sculpture. Sir Peter has designed many album covers including The Beatle’s ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and Paul Weller’s ‘Stanley Road’ album. Sir Peter received his knighthood in 2002.

Orange and Honey Glazed Sweet Potato and Chicken Skewers with Sweet Potato Salad These orange and honey glazed sweet potato and chicken skewers are easy to rustle up and brighten any BBQ. Also delicious when cooked on a griddle pan, they’ll save the day when rain clouds start to gather.

Serves 6 Ingredients: 4 large chicken breasts cut into 2.5cm cubes 2 large sweet potatoes cut into 2.5cm cubes Fresh bay leaves 2tbsp honey or sugar 6 skewers For the marinade: Juice of two oranges 1-2 chillies or more depending on how spicy you like your food 5 sprigs of thyme 2 spring onions Fresh ginger to taste 3tbsp honey Cracked black pepper Method: Cut the chillies, spring onions and ginger into thin strips and place into a large bowl. Add the honey, orange juice and black pepper and mix well. Add the chicken and gently mix together, marinating the chicken well. Cover and place in the fridge for at least one hour.

Cook the cubed sweet potatoes in boiling water for 4 minutes, drain and set aside.

Cook the chicken on a griddle pan or on a BBQ until juices run clear, turning frequently. Drain and reserve the marinade when cooked. Build the skewers, alternating between chicken, sweet potato and bay leaves. Pour the reserve marinade in a pan with honey or sugar, bring to the boil and turn the heat down to reduce the marinade to thick syrup. Coat the chicken with the marinade and serve with a sweet potato salad on the side.

Ingredients: 1 large sweet potato 1 raw beetroot 1 fennel bulb 1 orange Small bunch flat parsley Small bunch mint 5-8 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves chopped Sea salt (Optional) Cracked black pepper Method: Peel and slice the beetroot and then place in a bowl of cold water. Peel the sweet potato into strips, and place in a large bowl with sliced fennel and orange segments. Drain and dry the beetroot and combine together. Add the mint and parsley together with the seasoning and serve.

• Burning herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme or even the remaining oranges on the BBQ will add extra flavour to your skewers.

• If you like a more “sticky” feel return the skewers to the grill, but keep an eye on them as the marinade will caramelise very quickly.

Blackpool RSPCA Annual Dog Show

The show returns to Stanley Park on 24th August The Blackpool RSPCA Dog Show returns to Stanley Park again this August after last years great success. The event runs from 10am to 4pm 22 dog classes are eligible to enter and win rosettes and prizes. There is also a ‘Catless Cat Show’ (see box out) where people send in pictures of their cats and the team judge them 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with rosettes to be won.

There are lots of stalls for all the family from Stalls with cakes, Tombolas, New Goods, Pet Shop Goods, Hydrotherapy, Dog Grooming, Name The Teddy, Micro Chipping, New goods and many more, including a fun agility course usually run by RAF dogs. Lots of charities and organisations take part on the day including a local dog groomer, a DJ and face painting for the children. It was a huge success last year raising the animal centre over £2000!! So hopefully the weather will hold out again this year to make it as much of a success again

Sweet Eve Strawberry Meringue Roulade with Mascarpone Serves 8 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 16 minutes Ingredients: Vegetable oil for brushing the tin Whites of 6 eggs 300g caster sugar 80g flaked almonds 400g mascarpone cream cheese 1tbsp heaped icing sugar 300g Sweet Eve strawberries Method: Preheat the oven to 200째C and place the oven rack quite near the top. Line a standard Swiss roll baking tin, or a shallow baking tray with baking parchment and brush with vegetable oil.

In a big, clean bowl, whisk the egg whites till they are quite stiff. Add the caster sugar slowly. Continue whisking until the meringue mixture is stiff and shiny, forming peaks.

Spread the meringue mixture in the Swiss roll tin and sprinkle the flaked almonds on top, evenly. Place in the oven and bake the meringue for 8 minutes. After 8 minutes lower the oven temperature to 160째C and bake the meringue until golden brown, which will take approximately another 8 minutes.

When the meringue is golden brown, remove from the oven and turn it almond-side down on a big, clean sheet of baking 44

parchment. Peel off the paper from the base and leave the meringue to cool completely.

Whisk the mascarpone cream cheese and the icing sugar till stiff. Spread the mascarpone cream and three quarters of the Sweet Eve strawberries, sliced in halves lengthways, evenly over the cold meringue. Use the

sides of the parchment paper to roll the meringue roulade onto a serving tray or platter. Keep the meringue roulade in the fridge until you are ready to serve it.

FOOD Sweet Eve Strawberry Cream Victoria Sponge Cake Serves 4 Named after Queen Victoria herself, there are few cakes that can beat this all-time classic recipe.

You can spread strawberry jam (turning it into a jam sponge) or whipped vanilla cream on the base of one sponge cake as a filling, or both.

Preparation time: 20 minutes Baking time: 20 minutes ingredients: 175g butter, soft 175g caster sugar 3 fresh eggs 175g self-raising flour 250ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla bean paste, or vanilla extract 1 tbsp icing sugar and extra for sifting 400g Sweet Eve Strawberries 4 tbsp strawberry jam (optional) Method: Pre-heat the oven to 180째C. Butter and line two 18 cm sandwich tins with baking parchment. Beat the butter and the sugar till pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well. Fold in the flour, one spoon at a time.

Divide the mixture evenly between the tins and level with a knife. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the sponge cakes are well risen, golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool the sponge cakes on a wire rack. Hull the strawberries and

slice them in half. Whip the cream till quite stiff, mix in the icing sugar and the vanilla.

When the cakes are cool, spread the jam on one of the sponge cakes (if using) and spread half of the whipped cream on top. Place half of the strawberries on top of the cream. Place the other sponge cake on top and spread with the remaining whipped cream. Arrange the remaining strawberries in a spiral round the cake.

Sweet Eve Strawberry, Prosecco, Campari, Elderflower Cocktail Serves 6 people Preparation time: 10 mins ingredients: 300g Sweet Eve strawberries 6 sugar cubes (optional) 3 shots of elderflower cordial 3 shots of Campari 1 bottle of Prosecco

Method: Take 6 large champagne flutes and chill in the refrigerator. Hull all the strawberries and chop and blend half of them. Strain the strawberry puree into a jug through a sieve, to eliminate the seeds. When you are ready to serve the cocktail place a cube of sugar at the bottom of each glass, (if you prefer your cocktails less sweet then you can leave the sugar out). Pour half a shot of elderflower into each glass, followed by half a shot of Campari and half a shot of strained strawberry puree. Open the Prosecco bottle and top each flute with fizzy wine. Mix with a cocktail stirrer and serve with the remaining Sweet Eve strawberries.

Good financial news as Wyre approves accounts Wyre Council is proving that you can balance the books in these austere times.

Members of the Audit Committee, at their meeting 24 June, were asked to approve council’s accounts for the year ended 31 March 2014. And in amongst the 110 pages for consideration by the committee there are some really good news stories.

There have been savings against budgets or additional income totalling £652,000 which will be used to meet on-going maintenance requirements. The council has lots of assets including operational buildings, leisure centres, Fleetwood Market, the foreshore/promenade, playground equipment, seats, shelters, paths and car parks, all of which are costly to maintain and it has been recognised that some of them are looking a bit worse for wear and in need of a bit of TLC. Real term savings in employee costs since 2005/06 total £3.6m - a 30% reduction – and staff mileage expenses have reduced by 60% over six years. For the first time ever, the cemeteries service has broken even, generating a small surplus of £7,000. Not too long ago this service cost the council tax payers in excess of £86,000.

The Marine Hall has managed to reduce its operating costs by an incredible 58% since 2007/08 with the venue costing the taxpayer only £200,000 to run in 2013/14 - a big thank you to all those who have supported us in achieving this by attending a huge variety of events and concerts. The cost of insurance has reduced by 37% over a six year period due to a robust approach to managing claims and improved intelligence on fraudulent activities.

While the council maintains what looks like a healthy level of money in the bank, the latest 46

financial projections show this money is needed in future years as significant reductions in government funding kick in. The Senior Leadership Team, which has managed to find savings of £786,000 to date, has been asked to find even more to help bridge the gap between income and expenditure.

Earmarked reserves also look healthy, but much of this money is already committed to schemes, with examples including the leisure centre improvement works currently under way, Shaping Your Neighbourhood grant funding now in its second year, replacement of council vehicles or simply meeting the cost of the council tax freeze – the money the council receives from tax payers has been frozen at the rate set in 2010/11.

Sea defences saw investment of £1.3m as the massive £63.2m Rossall Sea Wall improvement scheme got under way. The next biggest item was disabled facilities grants with just under half of the money going to residents in Fleetwood and a quarter to those living in Thornton and Cleveleys. Encouragingly, almost 70% of the capital investment in 2013/14 was met by grants and contributions meaning that the impact on our taxpayers is minimised.

Cllr Balmain, Chairman of the Audit Committee, said ‘Being a Scotsman I have a reputation for being careful with money, but when we’re talking about hard earned money paid by our residents then it is even more important than ever to make sure that we spend it carefully and wisely. I wish to place on record my thanks to all those who have helped secure our financial position including members and officers. We often say at Wyre that we run a tight ship and these accounts prove it.’

Community reflections and hopes to commemorate First World War

4th August marks one hundred years since Britain declared war on Germany and to mark the centenary, Wyre Council wants people to declare their reflections on war and hopes for the future in a special project.

100 Years: 100 Hopes is part of the restoration of Fleetwood’s Memorial Park and aims to honour the contribution and sacrifices of all those involved in the war, celebrate all that is good and compassionate about the present and share future hopes.

The council is working with schools and community groups to create declarations of remembrance and peace in a variety of ways including poetry, song and prayer, and aims to collect at least 100 before the anniversary.

Residents across Wyre are also encouraged to share their thoughts online at wyre.gov. uk/100hopes Children from Cardinal Allen Catholic High School and Birla High School in Kolkata, India were among the first to declare their reflections and hopes, during a recent visit to Memorial Park. Watch what they had to say and make your own declaration at wyre.gov.uk/100hopes On 4th August, a special event will be held at The Memorial Park, Fleetwood for local families and residents between noon and 4pm. There will be opportunities for live declarations from anyone who wishes to reflect on the past or express hope and peace for the future, and to create a piece of art with a written message. The afternoon will also be fun packed with theatre and music shows, to celebrate the present and enjoy the park as an important community space.

All are welcome to attend.

The council is also supporting the UK-wide Lights Out campaign to mark the moment war was declared. At that time British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey famously remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.”

Everyone across the UK is invited to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on 4th August, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection. Tealights will be given to local residents at the Memorial Park Fun Day on Saturday 26th July and 100 Years: 100 Hopes on Monday 4th August, for their own personal reflections that evening.

Wyre Council has been awarded £2.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to carry out a comprehensive restoration of the Grade II listed park and create a five year programme of community activities.

The Memorial Park is unique in that the entire grounds were created in commemoration of the First World War, unlike most conventional architectural memorials, and it is one of only a few listed war memorial parks and gardens in the country.

August Live Weekender The Blue Room in Blackpool has a jam packed treat for live music lovers this bank holiday weekend The Blue Room on Church Street in Blackpol will be hosting an epic weekend of live music this August bank holiday weekend. Over twenty bands on two stages in one venue. The venue which recently opened under new management has heeded to demand and reinstated the indoor festival theme that was always a massive success to the venues previous organisers. The weekender takes place on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August.

The first confirmed band are Blackpool based ‘post-rock’ band ‘Goonies Never Say Die’ who will be returning to the live scene after nearly two years on hiatus. They are performing as a warm up to their appearance at ArcTanGent Festival at Fernhill Farm in Bristol on Saturday 30th August, where they will play alongside artists such as And So I Watch You From Afar, Russian Circles, Jamie Lenman, Mono, Baby Godzilla and more.

Electoral registration system is changing this summer Over the summer, all Wyre residents will receive a letter through the post telling them about the biggest change to the electoral registration system in nearly 100 years Wyre’s Electoral Registration Officer will write to all residents in the borough to explain that a new, more secure system of Individual Electoral Registration is being introduced to replace the old Victorian system where the ‘head of household’ registered everyone living in a property. Now, each individual will be responsible for registering themselves.

Many residents will automatically move onto the new electoral register. However, some will need to take action to join or remain on it, which they can now do for the first time by registering quickly and easily online.

Garry Payne, Wyre Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said ‘Residents will receive a letter later this month that will explain the change to the electoral registration system. Look out for the letter as it will tell you if you have been 48

THANK YOU POULTON For your generosity during Christian Aid Week, in May 2014. A total of £6,057was collected from the door-to-door event, the Coffee Morning and St. Hilda’s Year 1 Cake Sale (£245). This was more than last year!! Well done and thank you to those who worked so hard during that week for this worthy cause to help those in need, especially in war torn areas of the world. Our next event will be Sat 1st Nov, Christmas Card Coffee Morning at the Methodist Church HAMBLETON IN BLOOM We are a small committee of dedicated volunteers who meet regularly to co-ordinate, work at and plan the attractive features and flower displays around Hambleton; we receive a donation from the Wyre Council and the bulk of the money is made up of donations from local businesses, sale of tubs, and fund raising activities which we energetically support.

Fundraising: This year on Wednesday August 20th at the Village Hall we will be having a BRUNCH from 11.30 am onwards selling Soup, sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee and a special children’s menu with various stalls offering crafts, cards, plants etc. We hope the entire village will support us in this year’s money making effort. For information on Great Eccleston Market call 07590 043238 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers.
