Council remembers fallen of World War I

A

s part of their homecoming commemorations, Wyre Council has installed a ‘Tommy’ silhouette in its reception area at the Poulton Civic Centre as a poignant tribute to all who lost their lives in World War I. The commemorative Tommy figure is part of a nationwide installation for fallen entitled ‘There But Not There’. ‘There But Not There’ is a charity project which aims to place representative figures across the country in memory of those who died, in the communities they left behind. The campaign hopes to educate all generations about why the fallen made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as raise funds to help heal those suffering from the hidden wounds of war. These silhouettes will represent Tommies being back within their communities for Remembrance 2018, the centenary of the end of the First World War. Each Tommy is made by the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) and by ex-service Veterans employed by RBLI. Councillor David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council comments ‘As we approach the centenary of the end of the First World War, this campaign has provided us with a visual way to remember those who lost their lives in World War I. It allows us to remember and honour the past and gives us chance to reflect on what those living with the scars of conflict today are faced with.’

The project aims to commemorate, educate and heal. It will commemorate those who died in the First World War through the installation of silhouettes, to educate all generations, particularly today’s younger generation, born nearly 100 years after the outbreak of World War I, to understand what led to the deaths of 888,246 British and Commonwealth service personnel, and to heal today’s veterans who are suffering from the mental and physical wounds of their service by raising funds through sales of the Tommies. Funds raised from the sale of the Tommies will contribute directly to the work carried out by beneficiary charities including The Royal Foundation, Walking with the Wounded, Combat Stress, Help for Heroes, Project Equinox: Housing Veterans and Medical Students and the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation. Wyre Council is also hosting a range of events leading up to Armistice Day, culminating in a final homecoming parade in Fleetwood on Monday 12th November. Let’s dance

T

here’s a modern dance being taught in Fleetwood, it’s called Kizomba. It is a beautiful partnered dance akin to tango that originates from Angola. Kizomba has been taking the World by storm and has finally reached Lancashire. Tony and Abigail have been dancing Kizomba since 2010 and teaching since 2014. They have done teacher training with two of the leading schools in Kizomba and continue to travel the world to improve and refresh their teaching skills. You can also find them at festivals and regular events, guest gigs and regular classes around Lancashire. Dance is a perfect way to promote well being and healthy mind and body. At their classes Tony and Abigail also promote the culture with a passion. They hold weekly classes in Poulton, Preston and St Annes. They also have monthly social dances in Preston which are fun and inclusive. Both are perfect for all levels and no need to bring a partner.

14

Hospice is Alfie Boe’s birthday beneficiary

S

inging sensation Alfie Boe celebrated his birthday on September 29th, and his legions of fans donated to his chosen charity – Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice. Each year Alfie donates his birthday to one of his charities, and this year he has selected the Fylde coast’s hospices as birthday beneficiaries. In particular, Alfie is lending his support to the China Trekkers – a team of 22 people including Trinity staff who will spend five days walking along the Great Wall of China in aid of Brian House from next week. Donations can be made online via a page on JustGiving, set up by the Alfie Boe fan blog, thoughtsofjustafan. Alfie’s fans have been supporting Trinity Hospice and Brian House since Alfie became patron of the Bispham-based charity in 2011. Most recently they raised more than £1,200 during an Alfie Boe YouTube Marathon, where fans spent a weekend watching videos of the singer online and made a donation. Jane Ireland, who runs the fan blog said ‘Fans of Alfie are very dedicated and like to support his chosen charities as much as we can, and Trinity is one that we know is close to Alfie’s heart. Earlier this year, Alfie donated a portion of the ticket sale for his Fleetwood concert to Trinity and we at thoughtsofjustafan decided to continue to support Alfie and Trinity when the opportunity arose. Donating to Trinity seems like the perfect way to celebrate Alfie’s birthday and support his local charity at the same time.’ Among the China Trekkers is Trinity’s Corporate Fundraiser, Janet Atkins. She said ‘The whole team has been working hard in preparation for China, making ourselves mentally and physically ready for what we know will be a gruelling challenge. It isn’t going to be easy as we will be walking for up to eight hours each

day, but knowing we have Alfie’s support means so much to us and I know it will help us when things get really tough. Alfie has been a fantastic supporter to us over the years, and we are absolutely thrilled that he has chosen to support us again as part of his birthday celebrations. It means so much to us, and we’re so grateful to all the amazing fans he has who donate from around the world in his name.’ All the money raised through the China Trek will be spent providing respite and palliative care for children with life-limiting conditions on the Fylde coast, free at the point of need. To make a donation online, please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ thoughtsofjustafanalfieboe.

Rae Morris comes home for Christmas

S

uccessful local musician Rae Morris returns home on Saturday 8th December to perform an intimate gig at Bootleg Social on Topping Street in Blackpool. Rae began writing songs while she was still a teenager and came to the attention of BBC Radio Lancashire DJ Sean McGinty after undertaking her first few gigs around the north west. McGinty put Morris forward to perform at the BBC Introducing Stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2011 and from there she was signed Universal Publishing the same month and Atlantic Records just one month later. Since then the singer has performed at festivals like Glastonbury and Bestival and released her debut album ’Unguarded’ in 2015. After touring the album far and wide, Morris took time off to write her second, ‘Someone Out There’, which

16

saw Morris venture deeper into more electronic territory and was released to widespread acclaim early in 2018. She performed at the Highest Point festival this summer and is looking to wow crowds again with another Lancashire date this winter. At the time of writing tickets were 60% sold out so get in there quickly to avoid dissapointment. Bootleg Social & Pink Rabbit Events in collaboration with ITB present Rae Morris with support from Tuscan Sun. Bootleg Social, Topping Street, Blackpool. wwwbootlegsocial.co.uk

I

f you have experienced hot flushes, cold shivers, night sweats, palpitations or any of the other unpleasant symptoms of menopause, then you’ll also be familiar with that feeling of frustration, wanting to scream at the world “But I have work to do/ life to live/kids to collect/holidays to go on/cupboards to tidy/ party to go to”! How many things have we put on hold just to deal with menopause? I didn’t sign up for it, did you? Most women I know are conscientious, put others first, take care of the family (young ones, old ones, the grown up kids including many a husband), so is it so much to ask for in our forties/fifties/sixties to get some decent sleep? Not to sweat in bed as if we walked into a sauna fully dressed? Then shiver in cold as if plunged into a freezer a few minutes later? Seriously, what kind of a joke is this?

Let’s start with evolution.

According to Darwin & Co, if a trait in a species serves an evolutionary purpose (that is survival of the species, or procreation), then the trait gets passed on from generation to generation. If a trait has no evolutionary advantage for a species, then it dies out the way the dodo and the dinosaurs went. Then why does half of the world’s population need to carry a microwave oven inside them throughout their middle age and sweat bucketloads in bed? Is this perhaps nature’s clumsy attempt to address worldwide water shortages by recruiting women to produce water once we can no longer produce babies? Take global warming… If it is such a threat to our planet, then whoever came up with the idea of 18

Menopause - Nature’s Way of having a laugh? menopause clearly did not think it through. Never mind the cars or CO2 or cows that heat up the planet, it is the women going through menopause that melt the ice caps, raise global water levels and cause extreme weather conditions from raging hurricanes to devastating mud slides and coastal erosion. Is this not a metaphor for how many of us feel? What about all that advice on how to stop/prevent/reduce hot flushes? Most of us have tried cutting out smoking, drinking, caffeine, calories, food in general, and did it work? Like hell it did! If it were so easy to fool the hypothalamus when ovaries decide to shut shop and oestrogen goes AWOL, wouldn’t we all have tried it already? Hands up

how many of you enjoy palpitating at night until you feel on the brink of a heart attack, so tired that all you can think of is sleep, dying to get some sleep? Changing bedlinen all the time anyone? Having a shower every hour? Because women have nothing better to do with their lives, do we? You’ve done your bit for the survival of the species, sacrificed your uterus, your figure, looks, sleep, hobbies and whatever else, dedicated yourself entirely to small creatures that are the future of our world, and what do you get in return? Menopause.

Lifestyle

And don’t even get me started on meditating, breathing exercises,

LINK-Mag Health (continued) yoga, mindfulness and the lot. I’m sure they have a place and maybe they help some women, but why do so many symptoms start at 3am when we are fast asleep? We are told to stop worrying and manage stress, but when we are asleep, simply minding our own business in a blissful oblivion, we are not worrying or stressing, just sleeping! So why do we have to be roused from this rare bliss with a thud in the brain (hammer in the hypothalamus anyone?), followed by palpitations as if a monster was chasing us? We lie there thinking: “But I am not worried about anything, I just want to sleep,” yet the heart is racing, and then you brace yourself for what’s coming next. Microwave goes on and the cooking starts. You keep thinking waterfalls, ice packs, melting ice caps, knowing all too well that you just have to ride it out, so you do, lie there with the blanket kicked off, waiting for the cooking to stop. Then the cold shiver sets in, blanket comes back, and again you ride it out, counting how many hours you have left before the alarm goes off. When you finally stop shivering, so tired you could die, you feel the sleep coming on, and then bang, it starts all over again. And again, and again. When you finally give up on the idea of sleep and tell yourself you can survive on a few hours a night (lucky you!), you try said meditation, breathing, counting sheep, only to realise that our bodies are far too clever to be fooled that easily. Just Ask those women who wanted to give birth ‘naturally’, only to scream for pain relief later. So my answer to the ‘expert’ advice to go and meditate is this: if all the women suffering from menopausal symptoms really took up their 20

advice and dedicated themselves to meditation - say we all enrol in a buddhist retreat somewhere in Nepal - imagine the global fall out. How many men could locate at least one of the following: a) a pair of socks, b) washing machine, c) kids’ PE kit, d) kids’ school?, in the absence of the fairy called wife/ girlfriend?

Eating Our Words

After yet another sleepless night, you promise yourself to improve your no-fat, no sugar, no fun diet even more. You eat even less of everything (by now you are an expert on thermogenic effect of various foods), you are practically vegetarian, your windowsill is brimming with sprouted alfalfa, cupboards are full of beans, you are pouring flax seeds onto everything, chewing sage like it’s a chewing gum. Half of your garden is dedicated to growing sage on an industrial scale, a business idea you came up with during those sleepless hours - a menopause fighting sage farm to support you financially once you lose/ resign from your job that does not recognise hot flushes, menopause or cooling fans for that matter). Just to be sure, you also swallow every supplement on the market that promises to help with hot flushes

and palpitations and sleep. What happens then? The morning after the night before, if you are human, you collapse on the table, forgetting all of the above.

So is menopause a natural stage in a woman’s life? Trust me, if you have ever experienced incessant hot flushes or palpitations, you’d know that there is nothing natural about being boiled from the inside or having your heart race like it’s on speed (no, I have never taken drugs in my life either).

Apparently we live in times of equality. Well, show me a man with a hot flush and a dry vagina, night sweats and cold shivers, and we may be closer to living in an equal world. Believe me, Menopause Matters!

Caring for your pet

A

rthritis in dogs and cats is one of the most common problems our pets can face as they get older and, as with humans, it can flare up in cold weather. Natural wear and tear, caused by aging, reduces the amount of cartilage that cushions the joints. This causes swelling and pain. Signs of arthritis in your pet include stiffness or a reluctance to exercise, which we usually notice in our pets after they have been resting. If they are struggling to groom themselves, are overly licking areas that might be painful or are protective of you touching certain areas then they will need to be seen by the vet. PDSA Vet Olivia AndersonNathan said ‘Pets with arthritis may seem to have a little less energy, preferring to curl up in their beds instead of going out on a walk or spending time in the outdoors. Cats can struggle to groom themselves properly and may have a noticeable deterioration in their coat quality.’ Arthritis can’t be cured, but it can be managed through medication and simple changes to a pet’s lifestyle. Olivia adds ‘It’s worth visiting your vet if you notice any symptoms, or suspect your pet may have arthritis. Painrelief and anti-inflammatory medication can be prescribed, and you’ll also be advice given on changes you can make at home to help make your pet more comfortable. Maintaining a healthy weight is very important because excess weight puts

Caring for pets with arthritis even more pressure on sore joints. It’s worth asking your vet about prescription diets or joint supplements for arthritis too, as these can beneficial.’

A typical treatment plan for a pet with arthritis could include:

‘When it comes to exercise, “little and often” helps keep joints mobile and puts them under less pressure than longer walks with extended periods of rest. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to give you an appropriate exercise and diet programme that is unique to your pet’s needs.’

supplements that may improve joint function or reduce inflammation • Changes to your pet’s diet to keep them a healthy weight and size • Regular periods of short gentle exercise • Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and other complementary treatments, if advised by your vet

Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and acupuncture can also be helpful to relieve the difficulties and pain associated with arthritis. Ask your vet for a referral to an accredited specialist.

• Medication prescribed for your pet by their vet to reduce pain and swelling

• Prescription diets or nutritional

Caring for an arthritic pet involves understanding from their owner, but with careful management and treatment, affected pets can still enjoy a good quality of life.

For the cake 225g butter, softened 225g caster sugar 4 eggs, lightly beaten 225g self-raising flour 2 tsps baking powder 2 tbsps natural yoghurt 150g fresh BerryWorld Cranberries, roughly chopped Grated zest of one orange 50g pecans, roughly chopped For the crumble topping 100g plain flour 50g butter, cubed 25g Demerara sugar, plus one extra tbsp 25g pecans, roughly chopped

What to do:

Pre heat oven 160°C / Gas Mark 3. Grease and line the base of a 20cm loose bottomed deep cake tin. First make the crumble. Stir in the flour, baking powder, yogurt, cranberries, orange zest and pecans. Spoon into the prepared cake 28

Sprinkle over the extra one tablespoon of Demerara sugar. Cook for 1 hour 15 minutes or until golden and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool for 15 minutes in the tin then carefully remove and cool on a wire rack. Serve cut into slices.

Cooks tip: To make a really special dessert serve with a cranberry and orange sauce spooned over. Simply place 250g of fresh cranberries into a saucepan with 100g sugar and a good squeeze of orange juice and a sprinkle of zest, add a little water and cook for a few minutes. Serve warm spooned over thick slices of the cake with a little cream or icecream - delicious.

Fleetwood Museum kids craft success

O

ur youngsters are back to school now but many have returned with added creative skills under their belts thanks to the craft volunteers at Fleetwood Museum.

said ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the children on the craft events I am sorry the holidays have come to an end and look forward to delivering our next sessions soon.’

Angie Hesketh leads the team of four who deliver an abundance of interesting events over the season following the theme of play. Angie told us ‘Beverly, Barbara, Denise and Jennifer have delivered sessions based on the theme of play, showing the children how to create fishing games, flipping frogs based on tiddly winks, Victorian thaumatropes, and peg people to name just a few’

Museum manager Ben Whittaker said ‘Our craft sessions are hugely popular with families and are always very well attended. We get a lot of repeat visits to the sessions which shows how much the children enjoy them. Like most things the museumsdoes, the sessions are planned and delivered by volunteers who do a wonderful job in facilitating some simple but very creative activities.

Children aged from 4-11 joined in the fun at the museum every Tuesday and Thursday with some wonderful results. Crafter Beverly

LINK-Mag Entertainment by Ann Montini to date people too, but it’s the greats that people admire and love, so yes there will always be Bassey and Manilow in there, simply because the fans demand it’ What advice would you give to others starting out ‘Work hard and grab the opportunities, because you will learn something from them and above all keep working hard, because a little rejection does us all good from time to time, it makes you work harder’

Not so average Joe Ann meets singing legend Joe Longthorne MBE

T

he wonderful Joe Longthorne is recognised as this country’s finest vocalist and live performer, held in the highest esteem by his fellow professionals, loved and adored by his fans the world over, The Bispham resident tells all to Ann A busy year as ever Joe? JL - ‘Wonderful thank you, and can I just say a huge thank you to all the fans old and new who keep on supporting me. It really does mean so much to see so many people at the shows.’ 50th Anniversary tour this year too? ‘I know, where has the time gone Ann? Feel like I am just about getting started now, but seriously it’s been a blast, and I have been blessed with the gift of entertaining which has shaped my life so much. We have had a wonderful time on this tour though, seeing so many friends old and new’ You were awarded an M.B.E, what an honour that was ‘I know, I mean me a lad from Hull at the Palace eh? It was such a special day and something you don’t think will happen, so when it does it’s wonderful and yes, I was nervous but it was a day I shall never forget, but again, it’s the people again that made me an MBE so thank you’ Many people would love to see you back on TV so what would appeal to you ? ‘Well I can’t cook, don’t garden as such and I’m not keen on the jungle, so sadly it limits you if your an entertainer like me, this is why I love live shows because we know with the full houses at Viva Blackpool, that people do want a great show, so why does TV ignore that? It’s madness’ Your signature impressions of Dame Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett, Sir Tom Jones, Barry Manilow, Sammy Davis Jnr (the list is endless) are all are spot on too ‘Thank you, I love doing them, but it’s something the fans love. I do up 40

Would you ever like to be a reality TV judge? ‘Yes and no, really. I don’t want to be the one to break dreams, and who am I to say you’re no good, you know. But I would like to encourage people, and say give it a shot and just go for it ‘ You love Blackpool and have broken so many records at all the theatres here, any particular favourite? ‘The North Pier always holds a special place in my heart, but we are blessed to have so many wonderful venues, like the new one with Viva. Then there’s gems like the Grand as well so when people come to see a show at Blackpool they really get a special experience’ What advice would you give the young Joe starting out 50 years ago today? ‘Enjoy it more and remember life has a lot of ups and downs, but we learn from them. Tell people just be nice to each other, but above all come and see my shows. They will cheer you up for sure, and give thanks to everyone for their support’ Joe will be appearing at Viva Blackpool and Lytham Hall throughout November and December, for dates visit www.joelongthornembe.co.uk
