Youth With A Mission Urban Ministries Winnipeg
Greetings! It seems spring is just around the corner, judging by the slushy/icy sidewalks the past couple weeks. Although I’m not a big fan of the slush, there are many reasons to celebrate the spring, and in honour of that I am printing this newsletter in full colour! I love spring because it is a season of new beginnings. Not only do things start to grow again after the winter, but this year it also marks a fresh start for our Mission Adventures Program, which I’ll share more about a little later on. But first thing first…
Our most recent Justice Discipleship Training School ended on Feb. 25, 2011. The Lecture Phase in Winnipeg went really well… our six students got to hear a variety of amazing speakers, as well as help with a kids program at a local community centre, participate in small groups and work duties, and of course do lots of fun things together such as producing a rather impressive amount of movies! There were also two weeks of outreach in the city, in which the students spent a week each at Winnipeg Harvest (a surplus food distribution centre) and Siloam (a soup kitchen/drop-in centre). We also took the team to Mexico for five weeks, where we had the opportunity to visit a Migrant Camp, Women’s Rehab Centre, local churches, and an orphanage, and work with other ministries in Tijuana and Ensenada. It was obvious God was working in our lives and the lives of the people we met! The Outreach Team: Brenda, Melissa, Kathryn, Allison, Sarah, me, Yoochang, Brenden, & Brook
We did lots of painting!

The apartment building we (or rather, an investor on our behalf) purchased was in quite rough shape when we got it, but although there is still lots to be done, I am getting excited about all the potential! And as an added bonus, on one of our first clean-up days, I ended up with a teapot one of the previous residents left behind! I boiled and scrubbed it before use, however.
Our Mission Adventures (MA) program has switched leadership this year (Kim Brenden), which means the program will be undergoing some changes. We recently had a time of “re-imagining”, where we brainstormed together to think of ways to grow and change the program. Even though MA isn’t my main focus, it was exciting to be part of the process, and I am looking forward to seeing the program go in new directions! The main focus is still the same, though: to provide an intensive, shortterm, urban missions experience for teams.
We actually still have spots open, so if you or anyone you know is interested in bringing a team, feel free to email us at email@example.com. The program dates for this summer are June 13th-22nd, June 27th-July 6th, and July 11th-20th.
We now have a website for Chiara House! http://chiarahouse.ca/ Here is an excerpt to explain a bit more about the project: Chiara House is a new missional initiative of Little Flowers Community which will provide a context for intentional Christian community for life and mission in Winnipeg’s West End. It will not be a shelter, detox program, ministry center, food bank, etc. Rather it will be a group of people living out their lives together, practicing radical hospitality, loving God & others in the context of our neighbourhood.
When we decided not to go to Haiti for Outreach because of all the political violence surrounding the elections, we went ahead with planning for Mexico even though there was a possibility we would not get money back from our tickets to Haiti. For over four months, Jamie and Kim, the co-directors of our base, worked to get the refund from the insurance agency, and finally they conceded! It truly is a miracle, considering how much bureaucracy there was to wade through… we had pretty much given up before we got the call. I don’t know how much of the money we are getting back, but whatever we get will be a help! Thank-you for all your prayers! God has also provided for me personally, and I am only $250 short for paying the balance for my trip to Mexico! If you would like to help me with the last little bit of finances, there is information at the bottom of this page on how to do so. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or just want to say “hi”, please feel free to drop me a line… I would love to hear from you! Blessings,
