This project consisted of the adaptive reuse challenge to design a transitional home, in a 100 year-old church building in Cedar Falls, IA. This home serves single mothers and their children who may live in the units for up to two years while they transition to their next chapter in life. Most of these women are recovering from a combination of physical abuse, substance abuse, and homelessness.

Design Concept New Hope Transitional Home was designed with the idea of safety and comfort in mind. This is a safe haven shelter for women who have experienced homelessness or unsafe situations such as domestic violence. Spaces in this home were designed using trauma sensitive principles. For example, furniture is placed against walls so residents can see all around them, soothing colors have been chosen to prevent triggering of unpleasant emotions of any kind, and naturalistic as well as inspirational artwork have been added for empowerment and comfort. The goal of this home is to help women and children rebuild their lives by giving them a safe place to live, learn, and grow, so that eventually they will have the resources to gain back their independence.

SINGLE FAMILY Project Highlights

For this project, the group was challenged to renovate an old Iowa barn into a residential home for the Randolph family. Michael and Anne Randolph have one child, David. David has autism with a couple of physical impairments including weakness in one arm and a definitive limp. David also has many allergies.
Project Overview Timeline: 5 weeks Type: Team Project
BARN REMODEL Design Concept As a team of three designers, we designed the space to meet the family’s needs and wishes. This included specifying sustainable materials as well as organic, all natural fabrics, such as cotton, for David’s allergies. Upcycled furniture and hi-tech gadgets were also included within the design per Michael and Anne’s tastes. The design of the space has David’s best interest at hand. We want him to be comfortable and safe in this home, especially his bedroom. Hardwood, tile, and low pile carpet have been specified for David to allow for easy accessibility. We have added a home security system not only for Michael’s love of hi-tech gadgets but also for David’s safety. David also has a full ADA compliant bathroom off of his bedroom. From these design elements, David should be able to live and grow comfortably in the safety of this new home. We have chosen a more modern design with rustic accents to keep with the exterior of the barn. By us fulfilling their needs and wants, we hope this makes the perfect home for the Randolphs.

Rendering of Lobby
Nantucket is an island off the Southeast coast of Massachusetts that was dubbed “Best Island in the World by National Geographic. Nantucket first began to prosper with the whaling industry, and then transitioned into a tourist destination. Nantucket was discovered by Bartholomew Gosnold of England in 1602. Nantucket is the whaling capital of the world where they actually discovered another species of whale, sperm whale! This attracted many tourists. Nantucket citizens also determined that they wanted to attract wealthy vacationers so many hotels and houses were built. Some of the most famous tourists of Nantucket were the Kennedys!

This project entailed designing a music school, The Panther Music Academy, for the Cedar Valley community which will be located in the University of Northern Iowa’s Latham Hall. This academy would be home to instructors and students of all ages using the Suzuki Method. This space will be designed for private and group lessons, rehearsals, and recitals.
Project Overview Timeline: 8 weeks Type: Individual Project
PANTHER MUSIC ACADEMY Programming Matrix
My goal for this project was to capture UNI’s sense of community. When designing this space, I aimed to make the learning environment fun and enjoyable. It will not only be enjoyed by students of the academy but also by family members and guests of the community. The environment will help encourage students to look forward to their lessons and rehearsals. Materials for the space will have a purple and gold theme, so the students, guests and community members feel the Panther pride. From making the academy a welcoming and enjoyable place, I strived to make their rehearsal and lesson spaces have a great educational atmosphere. The rehearsal spaces have reflective materials and surfaces, but also absorptive materials when needed. The acoustics in these spaces will be adjustable for the sound desired. The Panther Music Academy will bring the community and university closer together.

NATIONAL FURNITURE SHOWROOM
My project team consisted of myself and two other senior interior design students. We created the firm “LRE Innovations which is a full service interior design firm that also serves as a National Office Furniture dealership and product showroom. We aimed to create a collaborative work environment that is LEED Certified and has aspects of the WELL building standard.

Space Utilized - 12,154 sq. ft. Dock
The Northeast corner of the building was chosen based on sunlight patterns, visibility from the street, parking opportunities, and the option to add additional windows on the East exterior wall. Remaining building space will be leased to other tenants. Our firm’s storage room is in close proximity to the building’s loading dock. Our design team also chose to keep a direct path from our showroom to the storage room and loading dock for easy shifting of furniture and deliveries.
