Adams and Humann elementary schools named 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona an nounced that two elementary schools within Lincoln Public Schools are designated 2022 National Blue Rib bon Schools. The announcement on Friday recognized Adams and Humann elementary schools as two of the 297 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2022. The Blue Ribbon recognition is based on a school’s overall aca demic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
“I applaud all the honorees for the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for creating vibrant, welcom ing, and affirming school communities where students can learn, grow, reach their potential, and achieve their dreams,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “As our country continues to recover from the pandemic, we know that our future will only be as strong as the education we provide to all of our chil dren. Blue Ribbon Schools have gone above and be yond to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. These schools show what is possible to make an enduring, positive difference in students’ lives.”
“It’s an honor any time a school is recognized na tionally for their work and dedication to student achievement,” said LPS Superintendent Paul Gausman. “In Lincoln Public Schools we get the honor of not having just one, but two of our schools showcased at the national level for their work in pushing through
challenges and succeeding when it comes to student achievement. On behalf of my team and the Board of Education, congratulations to Adams and Humann elementary schools staff, students and families.”
The principals at both schools shared the announce ment on Sept. 16 with their staff, students and families. They will travel to Washington D.C. in November to accept the award during a special ceremony. A special celebration for students, staff and families is being planned at each school after the national ceremony.
The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in striving for – and attaining – ex emplary achievement. National Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models of effective school practices for state and district educators and other schools throughout the nation.
Adams and Humann elementary schools become the ninth and tenth LPS schools to be named a Blue Rib bon School in the 39-year history of the recognition. Other LPS schools honored were Lux Middle School (2021); Pyrtle Elementary School (2020); Rousseau Elementary School (2018); Riley Elementary School (2011); Norwood Park Elementary School (2012); Southeast High School (1988); Lincoln East Junior and Senior High School (1983); and Lincoln High School (1983).

First group of LPS students earn AP Capstone Diploma
The first group of Lincoln Public Schools students walked away with Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone Diplomas over the summer - 13 total from two high schools.
The AP Capstone Diploma program is based on two year long AP classes: AP Seminar and AP Research. The classes help students develop critical thinking, research, collaboration and presentation skills for life after high school. Seniors must earn scores of three or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research and four additional AP exams to receive this honor.
LPS is one of three districts that have the AP Capstone Pro gram. It started at Southeast and North Star high schools in 2020. Only five Nebraska schools have the program.
“I was excited to learn I would be one of the first in Lincoln to graduate with an AP Capstone diploma,” North Star Graduate Zein said.
“It was an incredible privilege to be associated with these students, but this group took a chance on us,” said Brian Wandzilak, North Star AP Capstone teacher. “They trusted that we would guide them through this relatively unknown program in the state of Nebraska. They trusted that we would provide them with the skills they needed to maximize their time in AP Capstone.”
More than 2,200 schools participated in the AP Cap stone program worldwide during the 2021-22 school year and about 14,100 students earned the AP Cap stone Diploma. LPS students scored higher than the global average.
“The level of rigor in an AP course provides a challenge for these talented students and presents a great op portunity for them to grow. It is very rewarding to see students rise to the challenge and learn what they are capable of achieving,” added David Nebel, Southeast AP Capstone teacher.
The courses give students the unique opportunity to align their interests to their coursework, equipping them for college and beyond.
“I am very thankful I was granted an opportunity of fered at only two high schools in Lincoln. AP research taught me many real-world skills that have improved my understanding of the academic and scientific inqui ry process,” Zein said.

Genesis & Heather: Stronger Than I Thought
Genesis and her TeamMates mentor Heather aren’t shy to admit their first time meeting back in 2019 felt a little awkward. They laugh remembering how they didn’t know what to talk about, but there’s no shortage in conversation.
“When we do projects we just talk, talk, talk,” Heather said.
The mentoring pair recently reunited for the first time this school year and their conversation continued as if there was never a break.
“We picked up right where we left off,” Heather added.
Heather and Genesis developed this connection at Belmont Elementary where the two were first matched. They played games to help foster communication.
Heather explained, “but I think our relationship really developed once we started doing…”
“Artsy stuff,” Genesis finished.
Their art projects are a highlight of their TeamMates experience and con nect their mutual love of animals. The pair has crafted ostriches, cows and bunnies to name a few. There is one attempt that stands out to Heather and Genesis. They once attempted to create a parrot to resemble Genesis’s three green-cheeked conure pet birds, but it didn’t go as planned.
Genesis said: “We were watching a step-by-step video. It involved so many feathers and took so long, but it turned out looking like a pigeon!”
“That’s the fun thing about projects though,” Heather added. “They don’t have to be perfect, do they? We learn along the way and sometimes we even try them again.”
Genesis said she looks forward to visits with Heather. She said they help her get ready for school faster and their projects give her “a spark.” Their artistic endeavors even led Genesis to win a button design contest hosted by TeamMates. Genesis’s rendition of her sneaker was featured in a TeamMates fitness fundraiser. Heather even promised to hand deliver the entry to prevent it from getting lost in the mail.
Heather said the achievement was a fundamental building block in further ing their relationship. Heather has enjoyed watching Genesis’ growth since elementary school. Genesis has transformed from a reserved third grader to a positive, confident sixth grader who led Heather on a tour of her new middle school – Goodrich.
TeamMates helped make this transformation possible.
“I think Heather kind of opened up my shell. Now, I talk to everybody. Even if I don’t know them, I just say hi. I can make friends with anybody. I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was,” Genesis said.

Lincoln Public Schools Library Services
Lincoln Public Schools Library Services recently debuted its MOSAIC display at the Steve Joel District Leadership Center (formally the District Office at 5905 O Street). The exhibition will be in the lobby through the month of October.
MOSAIC began in 1991 as an initiative to meet the Nebraska Department of Educa tion requirement that libraries provide cur rent and unbiased multicultural resources. A committee of teachers and librarians selects, reviews and promotes books and supplemental materials that authentically and realistically portray the diversity of all students, from both historical and contem porary perspectives.
Through the years, MOSAIC has contin ued to evolve from a simple print book display to a digital display including links to ebooks, audiobooks, and book trailers. On the MOSAIC website, books are paired with videos so students can learn more about the settings, events, and people por trayed in the books. The MOSAIC website also includes promotional book talk videos starring LPS students and librarians. You’ll definitely want to check it out!
MOSAIC Book Selection
Each year, the LPS Library Services MOSAIC Committee com prised of literature-savvy teachers and librarians scour educational journals and review sources to select newly published multicultural materials to review for the MOSAIC. Resources are purchased from both major publishing houses and small independent publishers. Every resource is reviewed by committee members for accuracy, authenticity, content and perspective, characterization, setting, and literary quality. Only the "best of the best" resources are included in the MOSAIC display. The committee members' reviews are added to the LPS online catalog and included in the digital display. Our committee members also select high-quality extension resources to include in the digital display. MOSAIC Display

This is How I Know by Brittany Luby, illustrations by Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley Written in English and Anishinaabemowin by Brittany Luby, an author of Anishinaabe descent, Mii maanda ezhi-gkend maanh-This is How I Know follows a young protagonist and their grandmother as they experience the changes of the seasons. Poetic images like, “When insects billow black from the trees,/and the sun slips into an orange dream./This is how I know summer.” are complimented with equally rich illustrations by Ojibwe artist Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley. This beautiful picture book makes an excellent read-aloud, with many opportunities to engage and connect with the text.
Manu!!
By Kelly Fernandez
The colorful and beautiful il lustrations in this graphic novel will draw readers in, but the mischievous main character, Manu, will keep them reading. This fantasy story about magic and brujeria, or witchcraft, is inspired by the author’s Domin ican heritage. However, this is also a story about true friend ship and sticking up for those you care about. Spanish phrases are seamlessly woven through out the story and although it begins light and humorous, the story turns darker later on making it difficult for readers to put down! This book is highly engaging with a great message and would be a fabulous addition to libraries for upper elementary and middle school students!
Ace of Spades
By Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
This is a novel that students will not be able to put down until the very end. In this “Thriller meets Gossip Girl,” the mysterious Aces spills the dark secrets of the only two Black students at Niveus Academy, Chia maka Adebayo, and Devon Richards. Chiamaka comes from a wealthy family with interracial parents and has her sights set on Harvard. Devon is a Julliard hopeful who is from an impoverished neighbor hood and attending Niveus on scholarship, though his mother still has to work multiple jobs to cover the rest of his tuition. Chiamaka and Devon form an unlikely alliance in the hopes to uncover Aces, as they both have a lot to lose. The plot turns sinister as they uncover an underground white supremacy group with roots deeper and farther reaching than they ever could have imagined. This novel touches on racism, homopho bia, drug dealing, poverty, and the images people create for themselves, only to hide behind.

LPS Sustainability Team welcomes new interns
The Lincoln Public Schools Sustainability team extends its reach by offering internships to local college students. The team has had an internship program since 2016, and the interns get hands-on experience while supporting LPS sustainability efforts. The team welcomed three new interns for the 2022 - 2023 school year this year. Meet the LPS Sustainability Interns:
Jake Duffy joined the sustainability team this year. “I’m excited to make an impact on the community here and have a chance to work with kids,” Duffy said.
Duffy is currently a senior at UNL majoring in Environmental Studies and German. This summer, he spent his time working in Colo rado with Conservation Legacy doing various projects, including trail building.
Duffy said he was glad to be back in Lincoln for the school year. “I’m excited to make an impact on the community here and have a chance to work with kids,” he said.
He will have the opportunity to lead a student club at Calvert Elementary School focused on pollinators from the Nebraska State Arboretum this fall.
“I’m looking forward to working with my hands and gardening with kids to help restore some of the land around Calvert,” Duffy said.
The senior looks to pursue a land conservation and management career after graduation.
Jackson Farho is the department’s first in tern dedicated to school gardens and outdoor learning.
“I was excited about this position because I am able to work in school gardens and help students and staff realize the benefits of out door learning,” Farho said.
Farho is a sophomore at the University of Ne braska - Lincoln majoring in Environmental Studies. He said he was interested in joining the LPS team because he wanted to help com munity organizations with sustainability.
“My favorite part of being an intern for LPS Sustainability is being able to experience all different forms of sustainability from waste management to gardening,” he said.
Throughout the summer, Farho acted as a resource for schools with existing gardens and has helped buildings dream up their first outdoor learning space.
Are you interested in revamping your school’s outdoor spaces? Contact the team’s expert!
Grace Kollars is the final addition to the team. She’s working towards a dual degree in Environmental Studies from UNL while taking graduate classes for a master’s degree in public health through the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Kollars wanted to be an LPS sustainability intern because she has always been interest ed in sustainable practices.
“I have done a lot of work and research on sustainable living, dealing with waste, water, energy, etc. This internship will allow me to put my research into use and help influence the younger generation to make sustainable choices,” she said.
Following her LPS internship, Kollars hopes to put her degrees and experience to use.
“I am hoping to gain real-world implemen tation and experience from this internship. I have taken a lot of classes and given presen tations on the environment and sustainabil ity, but now I can put those to use,” Kollars said. She’s been researching careers like environmental education and environmental consulting.
Kollars internship has a wide range of tasks, including conducting construction waste management inspections, giving Garbology presentations in kindergarten classes and writing stories for our monthly newsletter.

Winter Coat Drive 2022-23
Our schools work with families who need winter coats for their pre-school and elementary-aged children. Elementary principals cannot guarantee a new coat for every child, but they will do their best to fulfill as many requests as possible. LPS distributes coats to students through their school by late November. Bubba’s Closet needs your help. The drive is only made possible through the community’s generosity.
If you are interested in donating to Bubba’s Closet this year are encouraged to give through the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools Fund a Need campaign found online at bit.ly/ donatecoats22. Funds raised will be used to help fill the coat requests from families. Donations of new coats (tags still on the garment) will also be accepted at each elementary school. Foundation for LPS announces Fielding Dreams campaign
The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools kicked off a joint capital campaign with LPS to build premier athletic and activity facilities on Aug. 26. Organizers announced the “Fielding Dreams” campaign during a special celebration before Lin coln Northwest High School's first football game at Union Bank Stadium.
The foundation needs to raise $17.6 million to finish Union Bank Stadium at Northwest and the future athletics and activities complex at Standing Bear High School.
Lincoln voters showed their generous support with the 2020 school bond, which contributed $15.4 million toward the first phase of both facilities.
“This project is about service to the entire commu nity. It will serve students and community mem bers in athletics, the arts and various activities.
Lincoln has a long history of remarkable facilities to move academics forward, and this project al lows us to continue this important tradition,” LPS superintendent Paul Gausman said.
The nearly $18 million will help get the projects closer to their $33 million vision. The foundation is counting on the Lincoln community to help field dreams for future LPS students.
“It’s an effort that will benefit not only LPS, but the entire Lincoln community for years to come. And, in a community like Lincoln, we have so many amazing donors, alumni and contributors that it feels like family helping family,” LPS Foundation President Wendy Van said.

Seven tricks to treat your family well
By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS District Wellness
Partake in fun active fall activities. There are plen ty of free or low-cost seasonal activities you and your family can do this fall. Try cheering on your favorite team, taking walks admiring the changing leaves, apple picking or visiting a pumpkin patch to keep active.
Explore apples. Fall is the best time to try apples and all their goodness. Buy single apples and have side-by-side taste tests at snack or supper. It’s a great way to expand the palate of your kids and maybe introduce them to a new favorite. Here’s a tip: try rinsing your pre-cut apples with a bit of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. It doesn’t matter if it’s diet or regular. The citric acid from the soda keeps apples looking fresh and doesn’t impact their flavor.
Move Those Bones. Our LPS Wellness physical activity theme for this season is “Move Those Bones.” Keep an eye out for related activities in the halls of your school and handouts in your child’s backpack. Have a great time playing and exploring during these fleeting, beautiful afternoons and evenings.
Be time-specific with treats. Sweets are less harm ful to teeth if paired with a meal than in-between meals. The same may be said for crackers, chips or sweet drinks. All stick to the surface of our teeth and promote cavities and plaque growth until teeth are brushed. Encourage water between meals to help rinse teeth. If your child tends to be cavity prone, shifting timing for these sticky treats can help make trips to the
dentist much more positive. Spin brushes and more frequent supervised brushing help too.
Use tricks for a better sleep routine. Kids thrive with structure. Build a bedtime ritual for your kids that helps settle brains after active learning days. Put devic es to bed in adult-supervised areas, so they don’t sneak out for a late-night sleep distraction. Reading, bathing, white noise and prepping for the next morning before bed, combine forces to ensure better zzzs.
Be that house – offer alternative treats. Each year, I offer candy and other options for trick-or-treaters like small toys and bottled water. Scouring the neighbor hood for goodies can sure make you thirsty! About half of our visitors choose water as the treat. I’ve even had later trick-or-treaters specifically rush our door excit edly saying “I hear you have water!” As a bonus, it’s a great way to prevent an accidental candy stockpile if you have light traffic.
Keep healthier snacks on hand. One trick I utilized with my school-aged kids was to have them select their very favorite treats and limit them to a couple as dessert for supper. Otherwise, I kept those holiday can dies in a cabinet and out of sight. Within a week, they weren’t thinking about the candy anymore. I also made sure to have handy easy-to-grab, healthier options for hungry kids. It’s truly the trick that treats everyone. Keep teaching your kids that when they have choices, and make those choices easier for them with healthy treats that are easily accessible.
Let’s stay on the right track!
Getting the primary doses of the COVID vaccine and then staying updated with a booster to protect us against new strains of the virus will prevent severe illness and keeps us out of the hospital. Let’s get to the finish line against COVID.

Mickle student finds inspiration and composes school song
Seventh-grade student Braydon created a school song for Mickle. Braydon attended Brownell and Meadow Lane elementary schools, which both have school songs. He noticed his middle school didn’t have one and wanted to change that.
“When I came to Mickle, it kind of felt absent without one. So, why not make it myself,” Braydon said.
After asking Lincoln Public Schools leadership and his school, Braydon got the green light to begin writing and composing the song over the summer.
“We thought if he wanted to take on a project like that. Go for it! We’re not going to stop you,” his band teacher Mary Pfoltner said.
Braydon spent a week writing the lyrics and composing the piano music for the song. He connected the song’s three verses to Mickle’s E-cubed mission–educate, embrace and empower. The seventh grader said he wanted listeners to feel joyful and thankful for education when listening to the tune.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect from a seventh-grade student who was creat ing a school song, but I was impressed. He’s incredibly talented,” Principal Jason Shanahan said.
Braydon is a well-versed musician. He’s been playing piano since elementa ry school. He also currently plays trombone for the Mickle band. Braydon has created four songs so far.
His band teacher describes him as a go-getter and role model. She said this project embodies him as a musician.
“He just loves music. He asks very high-level questions. Questions that as a seventh grader that students wouldn't be asking. He just gets it,” Pfoltner said.
Mickle’s principal said middle school is a perfect time for students to ex plore their passions and develop their strengths.
“This is the first time they get that opportunity to do that and so to have a student that is so passionate and talented with music and be able to utilize that to leave a mark with the school that will continue well beyond them is a cool thing,” Shanahan said.
Mickle plans to premiere the song at a concert in December.
Mickle Middle School has a new tune thanks to one of its own.
“To have a student that is so passionate and talented with music and be able to utilize that to leave a mark with the school that will continue well beyond them is a cool thing.”
