No matter the time of year, there is always something fun to do in Lincoln! If you ask locals why they love Lincoln, and you’ll no doubt hear that it’s “a great place to raise a family!” It’s a common sentiment for many reasons, not the least of which is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to family-friendly activities. Any time of year, there are plenty of great options for making great family memories in Lincoln. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, a music lover or are just looking for an interesting and exciting place for the kids to burn off some energy, Lincoln has something for you. If you’re looking to get outside, Lincoln’s parks and trails system is second to none, featuring over 6,000 acres of parks and natural land, 125 parks and 131 miles of trails. Sunken Gardens is a particularly beautiful little gem featuring thousands of well-maintained flowers and plants, ponds with fish and water lilies and stunning art work. On the other end of the spectrum is Pioneers Park, a 668-acre nature preserve where, in addition to visiting the nature centers, miles of beautiful trails, sledding ramps and playground, you can actually see the buffalo roam (a herd of bison lives there year round!). Wilderness Park features 1,400 acres of nature for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Less rustic is Union Plaza, an urban park featuring trails, unique climbing structures and artwork leading up to Trago Park Sprayground. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo and Lincoln Children’s Museum are each nationally-recognized leaders in their fields, and are definitely local favorites! From April-October, the zoo features hands-on, up-close interaction with animals ranging from penguins to gibbons to goats and llamas. Of course, no visit is complete without a ride on the zoo train! For year-round indoor fun, it’s hard to top the Lincoln Children’s Museum. Three stories of exhibits allow children to climb, create, and imagine! Speaking of indoor fun, Morrill Hall is Lincoln’s very own natural history museum! This three-story facility on the University of Nebraska campus focuses on local natural history, including “Archie,” the world’s largest Columbian Mammoth fossil. Home to one of the world’s two largest collections of mammoth fossils, Morrill Hall features interactive exhibits including a children’s room where kids can become archaeologists and dig for fossils. The Nebraska State Capitol is also a great place for families to explore! Named one of the Seven Modern Architectural Wonders of the World by the American Institute of Architects, the highlight of any visit is a ride up to the 14th floor observation deck. You truly can see for miles and miles! Lincoln is a particularly wonderful place for families in the weeks leading up to Halloween. A visit to a local pumpkin patch is a truly unique experience! Roca Berry Farm is the largest local pumpkin patch, located just minutes south of Lincoln. Pumpkin picking, hay rack rides, haunted houses, a petting zoo, giant slides, life-sized Candyland, tricycle races and train rides are just some of the activities-- and that’s
800.423.8212 | 17
not even mentioning the apple cider donuts, caramel apples and other Fall treats. On the other side of town, JK’s Pumpkin Patch is another growing family favorite. A robust outdoor music scene during the summer months gets families outside and dancing! Jazz in June brings nationally-recognized artists to the lawn of the Sheldon Art Museum every Tuesday evening in June, the Lincoln Municipal Band brings its summer concert series to Antelope Park on Sunday evenings and beautiful Stransky Park is home to a Thursday evening concert series. In addition, the Lincoln Children’s Museum features family-themed bands during its Music and Mozzarella concert series. No matter the time of year, there is always something for families to do in Lincoln! Lauren Silverman Durban Radio Personality/Parenting Columnist 2017

NEBRASKA STATE CAPITOL
28 | www.Lincoln.org
Lincoln History at a Glance When the Territory of Nebraska became a state in 1867, the legislature had to decide where to place the capital city. Omaha was the former territorial capital and its representatives argued that the largest city in Nebraska should remain the state capital. However, a majority of the legislators preferred a capital more centrally placed. In a last effort to split the supporters of a new capital location, an Omaha senator proposed that any new capital city be named “Lincoln.” He knew that there was still pro-Confederacy sentiment among some of the anti-Omaha senators. A leader among the anywhere-but-Omaha faction, who happened to also be a well-known former Confederate sympathizer, seconded the motion and a search was initiated for a new capital site. The tiny town of Lancaster was chosen and renamed Lincoln. One of the attractions of the site for Lancaster’s thirty settlers and for native people before them was the opportunity to gather salt on the flats along Salt Creek, a reminder of the prehistoric inland sea that covered this area. Industrial production of salt proved unprofitable, but Lincoln’s environmental diversity is still enriched by very rare saline wetland habitats. A substantial townsite was platted in 1867 for the new capital city, with wide streets, park land, a campus for the yet-to-be-founded state university, and an ample Capitol Square. A Capitol was built by 1868. The University of Nebraska was founded in 1869. Burlington & Missouri River Railroad entered the west side of Lincoln—now the Haymarket District—in 1870, by which time the population reached 2,500. The U. S. Courthouse & Post Office, built between 1873 and 1879 to serve the growing city, is open during business hours at 920 O Street. It is called “Old City Hall” reflecting its use from 1905-1969. Haymarket Historic District on the west side of Downtown has a self-guided tour available in print and on-line at lincolnhaymarket.org/historic-tour Lincoln was a boom town in the 1880s, quadrupling in population from 13,000 in 1880 to 55,000 by 1890. A second State Capitol replaced the 1868 building, which was functionally and structurally deficient. New railroads carried passengers and freight. Downtown bristled with the steeples of large new churches, the University added buildings and the Burr Block, a six-story skyscraper equipped with an elevator, towered over downtown. Streetcars crisscrossed the growing city and reached new satellite towns on the eastern outskirts, most of which were founded around private colleges. CenterStone, at the northeast corner of 12th & O streets, is the 1915 remodeling and enlarging of the 1887 Burr Block. A nationwide depression in the 1890s hit Lincoln especially hard, the young city’s population dropped by nearly one-third, the new colleges struggled and a couple failed. The new century brought slower but steady growth. By the 1920s, Lincoln reclaimed and then exceeded its former peak population, and as the former satellite towns of Bethany Heights, University Place, Havelock,
800.423.8212 | 29
and College View all voted to join Lincoln, the population reached 80,000 by 1930. Of six schools founded in the 1880s and 1890s, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Union College continue to thrive, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has greatly expanded its City and East Campus, both gems in their respective settings, as well as key educational and economic assets. Nebraska Wesleyan University at 50th & St. Paul streets still retains its original “Old Main” of 1887-88, a handsome Richardson Romanesque structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. UNL’s City Campus and East Campus have richly detailed on-line tours of their historic architecture at: historicbuildings.unl.edu The distinctive Nebraska State Capitol was built in the decade 1922-32, with a beautiful 400 foot tower which is visible throughout the city and surrounding countryside. Lincoln’s tiny early airport became one of Nebraska’s dozen Army Air Corp bases during World War II, then was returned to the City with greatly expanded facilities. The Cold War saw the airfield reactivated and again expanded as Lincoln Air Force Base from 1952 to 1966. When it was again returned to the Lincoln Airport Authority, the city again had facilities that support not only air travel, but also Air National Guard facilities and successful local industries. Lincoln’s stable, diversified economy and its roles as state capital and home of the University of Nebraska have led to very steady population growth throughout the 20th century, averaging about 1% a year to reach a current population of over 300,000 in Lancaster County, with 90% residing within the well-planned city limits. Wyuka Cemetery, founded by the State of Nebraska in 1869, is an oasis of art, heritage and nature in the heart of Lincoln. A self-guided walking or driving tour is available at the Administration Building at 3600 O Street. Ed Zimmer, Historic Preservation Planner, Lincoln/Lancaster County Planning Dept.

Lincoln ranks #1 of the 10 Most Beautiful Cities in the U.S.A. “The state of Nebraska tends to evoke images of rolling hills and rugged landscapes. Lincoln…A sports event destination like no other The Nebraska Sports Council is proud to conduct one of the nation’s largest annual multi-sport festivals—the Cornhusker State Games—in Lincoln. With competition in 68 sports for more than 10,000 athletes and 20,000 spectators, the Cornhusker State Games presents a number of challenges for a host community. Thankfully, Lincoln has always risen to the challenge! First, Lincoln is a vibrant, cooperative and diverse sports community that provides support whenever necessary. Whether it’s local colleges/ universities with related areas of emphasis, workstudy programs or a business community that encourages and often rewards volunteerism and an overall spirit of community pride, Lincoln has the ability to deliver enough people-power to make every event great! Second, you’ve got to have versatile competition venues for the Games, including an arena or stadium with 10,000+ capacity for the Opening Ceremonies and more than 55 competition venues in a variety of sports that stretches from foosball to mountain biking and from trapshooting to soccer. Thankfully, Lincoln has the facility bases covered…and then some. Even better, the facility owners are generally very supportive in making facilities accessible.
Lincoln is loaded in this area—the athletes love it here. According to our surveys, the average Games athlete eats out more than three times, buys an article or two of clothing and spends time exploring this beautiful community. Games athletes seem to favor the family friendly establishments and sandwich shops, malls and sporting goods stores, go carts and trampolines, but all tastes, ages, hobbies and interests are served well in Lincoln. Last, but certainly not least, is the financial support in the community. With an annual budget around $1 million and participation fees accounting for less than half, the Games depend heavily on corporate sponsorships and individual donations. Thankfully, Lincoln has a very supportive business community and a community-wide philanthropic mindset as evidenced when Lincoln hosted the 2010 National Games for Special Olympics and the 2015 State Games of America. There is much more to love about Lincoln as a host city for your sporting event. From the volunteer recruitment and event planning and support from the Lincoln CVB, all the way up to the elected officials, everyone does their part. Their support makes the athletes and spectators feel welcome and their professionalism creates an environment for a top-shelf event.
Third, the host community needs a lot of affordable and family-friendly places to stay. Thankfully, Lincoln’s lodging inventory provides more than enough rooms for the Games and a great variety of locations, pricing and amenities to give athletes and families just what they desire.
Lincoln has definitely created a name for itself with the various regional, national and world competitions it has hosted over the past few years. We feel very fortunate that we are able to host our event in such a wonderful city that provides us with so many opportunities. Thanks Lincoln!
Fourth, attendees are usually looking for something to do, see, eat or buy in their host city before, between and after their competition. Thankfully,
Dave Mlnarik, Executive Director, Nebraska Sports Council

Natural Lancaster County It’s not hard for a visitor to find nature in Lancaster County. With great municipal parks, trail systems and conservation organizations, you will never be far from opportunities for learning, relaxation and recreation in the great outdoors. Tallgrass Prairie Eastern Nebraska’s landscape was once dominated by tallgrass prairie – with plants and wildflowers six to eight feet tall, and a wonderfully rich soil community of roots, bugs and microbes thriving for twice that depth below ground. With the spread of towns and farming much of our native landscape has been lost, but fortunately, Lancaster County abounds with opportunities to experience
42 | www.Lincoln.org
–to borrow my organization’s tagline–“where wild Nebraska grows.” The largest single tract of restored and protected tallgrass prairie in the region can be found at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. Located three miles south of Denton, about 25 minutes from downtown Lincoln, this attraction offers over three miles of mowed trails across 850 acres of tallgrass prairie, wetlands and woodland. Historic wagon ruts from the Nebraska City-Fort Kearny Cutoff of the Oregon Trail can be viewed at the site. The trails are open 365 days a year between sunup and sundown. The Education Center contains exhibits about the birds, plants,
animals and people of the prairie. During opening hours, visitors can borrow themed Discovery Backpacks with tools and ideas for exploring the prairie. Programs throughout the year such as bird walks, workshops and a fall prairie festival provide opportunities for people to connect with the beauty of the natural world. For more information: springcreekprairie. audubon.org, (402) 797-2301 Lincoln’s Pioneers Park Nature Center offers another great tallgrass prairie experience. Located on the western edge of Lincoln and run by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, the Center covers 670 acres of woodland, wetland and prairie, and over eight miles of trails. Several
buildings house exhibits on the habitats found at the center, and the Heritage School and Hudson Cabin let visitors see a slice of life of nineteenth century Nebraska settlers. The Nature Center also houses several indoor and outdoor live animal exhibits of some of the prairie’s native wildlife, including fox, wild turkey, American elk, whitetailed deer and perhaps the most iconic of prairie animals, American bison. Kids will enjoy getting dirty in Edna Shield’s Natural Play Area. The Nature Center hosts a wide variety of program and events throughout the year. Nine Mile Prairie The University of Nebraska-Lincoln‘s Nine Mile Prairie (named for its distance from the downtown campus) is open to the public. Mowed grass trails let visitors experience the prairie up close on the 230-acre research facility. There are no facilities at the site. For more information: http://snr.unl.edu/ aboutus/where/fieldsites/ninemileprairie.asp Saline Wetlands In addition to tallgrass prairie, Lancaster County is home to a rare complex of saline wetlands. Created by groundwater seeping up through salt formations left behind by vast inland sea millions of years ago, saline wetlands have a unique plant community and attract a wide variety of birds. The public can visit about a dozen different saline wetland areas around Lincoln. At the Lincoln Saline Wetland Center just east of Capitol Beach Lake in Lincoln, visitors can walk a one-mile wood chip interpretive trail. A historic “bowstring” bridge and a wildlife viewing blind add to the experience. For more information: lincoln.ne.gov/city/ parks/parksfacilities/wetlands/index.htm Parks and Other Recreation Areas Along with Pioneers Park (mentioned above), Lincoln’s Wilderness Park is a great place to walk or bike in a natural setting close to town. afield, several State Recreation and Wildlife Management Areas in Lancaster County provide a wide array of other opportunities for hiking, biking, boating, fishing, swimming, camping and other outdoor activities. For more information: lincoln.ne.gov/city/ parks/index.htm; outdoornebraska.gov Trails There are so many beautiful places to explore in Lancaster County. A great way to explore them is on our extensive and growing trail system. From bike routes through busy downtown Lincoln, to rural rails-to-trails projects that connect Lancaster County with other parts of the state, there are miles and miles of trails through the region that provide great places for walking, jogging, biking, horseback riding, and even birding! For more information: gptn.org; nebraskabirdingtrails.com I hope you’ll find exploring the natural beauty that Lancaster County has to offer as rewarding as I have. And with new projects underway - like a trail connection to Omaha and the Haines Branch habitat and trail corridor between Pioneers Park and Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center – we can all look forward to even more opportunities in the years to come. Creativity on Tap It might surprise you to find out that Lincoln has quite the beer scene – one that is slowly beginning to rival popular cities in Oregon and Colorado. With a rich history of brewing in the state, Lincoln is pioneering the way for new breweries in Nebraska. With historical breweries like Empyrean Ales in Lazlo’s Brewery and Grill to the popular and nationally recognized breweries like Zipline Brewing and Boiler Brewing Company, Lincoln is creating quite the beer culture! While we don’t have a vast number of breweries to explore, each Lincoln brewery has its own unique take on beer, food and hospitality. Lincoln’s breweries are as diverse on your palate as they are in creating that memorable multiple taps of their latest creations. Others serve their beer in a restaurant style and you can order an appetizer to share or even a full three-course meal. Most breweries encourage tasting their beers through flights (which I highly recommend) and some feature outdoor seating for the warmer months. I often get asked, “which brewery is your favorite?” To which I always reply with my hands up and a shoulder shrug, “it depends.” Before I can actually answer the question, I follow up with a few qualifying questions of my own. They usually include: 1. What do you like, in regard to beer styles? 2. Who are you with, a buddy, co-workers, extended family, your kids? 3. Do you want to eat? These quick three questions usually help me point the person in the right direction. I work in downtown Lincoln, so being able to walk to a brewery after work, grab a pint and a snack is important. I usually park across the street from Ploughshare Brewing Co. on 16th & P and can’t get enough of their Tailgate Red and soft
German-style pretzels. I get my pretzel paired with the Spicy Szechuan Peppercorn Ranch and Mustard Aioli. Boiler Brewing Company is also located downtown near 9th & P in the Grand Manse building. Once of the newest breweries to Lincoln, this Lincoln hotspot features the Raspberry Berlinger Weisse. This specific brew was brewmaster Tim Thomssen’s Sam Adams 2015 Longshot homebrew contest brew. Sam Adams released a limited supply in the spring of 2016. Modern Monks brews beer in downtown Lincoln and it’s sold exclusively in Misty’s restaurants. Misty’s, a historical Lincoln restaurant known for its chargrilled steaks, is also popular for its microbrews, which are brewed in-house by Modern Monks. The Monks feature five classic brews and often have a rotating feature. I don’t get to Misty’s too often, so I usually have to try the new and exciting rotator. Empyrean Brewing, like Modern Monks is served in the historic Haymarket restaurant Lazlo’s Brewery and Grill. Empyrean beers are delicious and feature seasonal and rotating selections. Empyrean has “Beer School” once a month where you can explore different types of brews with the head brewmaster, Rich Chapin, and sample 5 craft beers. But get there early, only the first 150 people make it in! Just north of downtown is SchillingBridge Cork and Tap. Located in Fallbrook, just five minutes from the Haymarket, SchillingBridge is an escape from the city with great beer, delicious wine flights and some big flavors on their menu. They build a few items starting with their beer including beer bread and beer cheese. These two items are a must try and if you really like cheese, check out the Drunken Nachos with their Scottish Ale BBQ brisket and Extra Pale Ale cheese sauce, you won’t be disappointed!

If you’re looking for that traditional tap room feel, award winning Zipline Brewing Co. is just that. With two locations, the tap rooms features frequent Happy Hours, Monthly Brewery Tours and sometimes they bring in local food trucks that park out front. The selection of standard and rotating beers is reason enough to Uber out to Zipline, but their atmosphere seals the deal. Featuring an outdoor area and private conference room, Zipline is a Lincoln must. Located above the historic “Robber’s Cave”, rumored to a be a Jesse James hideout, Blue Blood Brewing Co. is a Lincoln brewery and full service restaurant. With 20 taps, Blue Blood serves up 15 of their own creations and 5 other Nebraska-based beers. The food menu is focused on pub fare and similar to many brewery restaurants, they include menu items that feature their own beers. Some of the popular menu

items are Happier Than Ale cheese sauce, creamy IPA-Parmesan dressing and the amazing Adult Stout Float featuring Okhrana Imperial Stout and vanilla bean ice cream. The restaurant is quite huge with both indoor and outdoor seating and they have cave tours three times a week. The beer and food are enough to try Blue Blood, but the cave, its historic story and photo ops make it well worth the visit. Located within a couple of miles of each other are two of Lincoln’s newest breweries White Elm Brewing, which brings modern takes on rustic ales, and Backswing Brewing Company which is famous for their IPA on tap.
