BloodSource

Encourages Hearts for Helping

W

ith less than 10% of people donating blood that is critically needed by so many patients, BloodSource joins with the American Heart Association in promoting heart health awareness this February. The challenge is to take care of our hearts all year long! Whether it’s eating well, exercising, knowing your history and important “numbers” like blood pressure or cholesterol, taking care of your heart is important for a long and healthy life. When you donate blood, you will receive important information about your health, such as blood pressure, iron levels and more. Plus, you’ll help save lives and what could be better for your heart than that?!

The need for blood While technology and awareness are helping hearts, the statistics are still grim. Heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. One out of every three women will be diagnosed with heart disease. When surgeries are necessary either to address heart malfunctions or repair cardiac damage, blood is often needed. The need for blood is often associated with motor vehicle accidents or cancer treatments, but heart patients are on the receiving end far more often than you might expect. From newborns to elderly patients, blood is needed to get patients back to health!

BloodSource, located at 6385 Pacific Avenue in Stockton, promotes increased awareness of heart health through its sponsorship of Hockey with Heart, held at the SMG Arena each February. As the sole blood supplier to St. Joseph’s Medical Center, BloodSource provides the blood products needed to help heart patients: red cells, platelets, and plasma. Not-for-profit since 1948, BloodSource mirrors the generosity of our blood donors by helping nonprofit organizations in the Stockton community, such as St. Mary’s Dining Room and participating in local health awareness events through Team BloodSource.

enough for the many donations that have saved Faith over the years. “As a mom, it is so hard not to be able to donate blood that will help my daughter because we are different blood types. Faith – and I – depend on the generosity of strangers to donate blood for her.”
