Population explosion is no doubt one of most important problems in the future, even though the population growth in developed countries is slowing down and even aging, but the population of developing countries are growing dramatically. Therefore, it’s quite possible that the population of the world will exceed 10 billion people in 2100. The solution is not to develop more land to build new houses or to build upwards because that will oppress the place of other organisms living on the earth. Our we advance our technology and extend our life spans and populations, we violate the natural rules and cause heavy destruction of the planet. Using our technology to look at potential planets for human life is a good way to go as this will reduce the burden we have placed on planet earth, slowly restoring our earth to its original state.

THE INDIVIDUAL

I analyze the human relations in society and comport to four gradations, every gradation is a synthesis of the previous gradation. Since the ratio of humans is microscopic in the universe, I translate this relationship from human to architecture.

ACTIVITY SPACE

The biggest advantage is its flexibility as it can change any time due to the building not limited by gravity and fixed construction. CONTROL CABIN

THE VILLAGE

A ‘Village’ is composed of different communities ranging from four to a maximum of 12 Communities. The size of the village depends of the density and population needs of the group which can be based on hobbies or other characteristics (for example, the love for basketball). CONTROL CENTER

THE NATION

The Nation is composed by different villages and has no size constraints. It could be a Sports Nation or even an Art Nation. They are distinctive features for every group, which can be easily and quickly exchanged.

Since I grew up in the city, skyscrapers are not unfamiliar to me, but they are not friendly either. I like the interaction in my grandmother’s neighborhood in the country side without the estrangement from tall buildings.

Parks areis a wonderful places for communicate in a community, it brings people together. But in the Zhong-Lun area, not only the scant square measurethe park is small (a lack of public place), there are but also too many taell buildings that limit social interactions between peopleactives. What I consider is that shouldIt makes me think whether we should create another teall building to limit actives by different level inadd to a community that already hasve a lot ofmany taell buildings? Overturn the building in order to break the vertical estrangement created by tall buildings, let the building become more friendly not just a cold solid to residents.

In order to eliminate the pressure created by tall buildings, we put the primary place underground and create vertical visual effects by allowing people to see the level beneath them.

I love traveling. However, a lot of scenic spots are created on the basis of what they want us to see instead of the real features for these places, this is why I like to explore regions on foot to discover extra features. This project was done during my third year of university. I wanted to explain the meaning of traveling through architecture by designing a hostel for backpackers.

19

THE MEANING OF TRAVEL HOSTEL

20

This case is based in beautiful Taipei city, behind the tall modern buildings are alleys that represent a cultural mix of different generations. Unlike most cities that use rectangular layout of streets, Taipei has a diverse form of alleys due to early planning based on the route of rivers. These alleys are a beautiful representation of Taiwan’s culture. However, most travelers travel from point to point through the use of transport which makes it hard to create any emotions from the process. But if we travel on foot between two points, the feelings of this place will come out like ripples in the lake.

This case was based in the Bo-Pi Liao cultural area. Different from the usual hostel, I hope the traveler can establish an emotional bond in this transient home by architecture. Therefore, I deliberately split the hostel apart by function to three locations that are not so far apart, so travelers have the opportunity to walk and feel the beauty of this home away from home.

The concept began from the alleys. That the alleys between houses translate into a single building. Allowing residents and travelers to quickly relate to the architecture, and not treat it as an isolated fortress.

Huafan University is located in the mountains surrounding Taipei basin, it not only roused my interest in architecture but also taught me the principle of coexistence of buildings and the environment.

27

IN THE FOREST

STUDENT ADMINISTRATION CENTER

28

Huafan University is a monstrance school located in New Taipei city. Almost 50% of school grounds is covered by forest. The traditional Chinese culture is heavily influenced by Confucian principles and we are expected to show upmost respect to our teachers. This point can be seen from the physical structure of most of schools in Taiwan. Most schools set their administrative building near the school entrance, this symbolizes power and control over the students of the school. Buildings for student activities such as sport center are placed on the periphery area of schools.

Huafan University is no different, using the academic office as the core and develop outwards. However we no longer live in the generation of autocratic power, this physical structure does not cause a tense relationship between the school and students.

30 DORMITORY

Education should be the core function for schools, ADMINISTRATION with student activities being the second focus and EDUCATION having the administrative STUDENT ACTIVITY system developed around student needs. As the SQUARE ACTIVITY LINE campus administrative system also has a part to play in student activities, I will separate the administrative system into two areas, one is associated with student activities and the other operating independently. Taking the same concept, we put the administrative system related to student activities at the end of the students’ line of activity , the independent operating units around the outer ring, and reallocate the original administrative building for student activities.

ORIGINAL LOOKS

REMOVE THE UNMEET PLANT

DESIGN WITH THE TREES

And what should a Forest University be like? I think that building itself should respect the original habitants such as the trees and animals. Consequently, I remove trees that have been deliberately transposed which do not belong in this environment and design the building so that it avoids the original trees that are there, integrate it into this environment, also allowing nature to become a part of interior. The various heights of the building will depend on the potential height of the trees so that the trees have enough room for growth.
