This Week’s Feature Story by Jan Critchley

National Theatre Live – Frankenstein! Thanks to Appleby and HLSCC we can now access world quality stage productions right here in the BVI. Don’t miss a single gem from this first selection of classics from the National Theatre Live – bringing the best of British theatre direct to the BVI. The first off the starting blocks, and very timely for Halloween is Mary Shelly’s monster hit, Frankenstein. Oscar winning director Danny Boyle directs this sensational production staring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. This thrilling gothic thriller will be showing at HLSCC’s auditorium from 7:30pm on Thursday, October 31st 2013. Other productions that are currently in the mix are Macbeth on 23rd November 2013, Habit of Art on 11th January 2014 and Hamlet on 25th January 2014. The ability to screen these productions is part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Frankenstein enjoyed a sell out at the National Theatre in 2011 and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier Award for best actor for both leads. Nadia Menezes, of Appleby who came up with the idea said, “After watching a number of performances screened at an Arts Center in New York, I was deter-

mined to bring this same concept to the BVI. HLSCC has been very supportive and receptive to having the Theatre Series stand alongside it’s own Annual Music Series which will bring a diverse offering of musical and dramatic performances.” Following this current series of NTL, there are more and different types of performances planned, ranging from Shakespeare to modern playrights, including entertainment aimed at younger/child audiences. Linette Baa of HLSCC said, “We hope that this is a start of something that can be continued with the on-going support of the community and we look forward to working with others to present to the BVI public as wide a range of entertainment arts as possible.” All performances will be screened at the HLSCC auditorium and are $15 in advance, $20 on the door and $10 for students and HLSCC staff. Tickets for Frankenstein and all other productions are available from the HLSCC Bookstore, LIME, House, The Watering Hole, Sunny Caribbee, Bella Blooms, UMI Fashions and on the door 15 minutes prior to performances.
