Ask Koren Don’t Want Daughter Exposed To Abuse

Ask Koren

around her. The fact that he attempts to keep his visitation appointments indicate that he is trying to be a good father, so please acknowledge that. After visits with him, ask her how the visit was and look for signs that indicate she might be traumatized. Depending on her age, you might also want to tell her that adults get angry sometimes and say or do things that they are not supposed to. Let her know that it is okay to tell you or her father if she is uncomfortable with something either of you are doing. Life is a learning process and her understanding these things will help her going forward. If she does not want to see him or go with him, don’t force her. If he continues to act in ways that are harmful to her, then you might have to insist on supervised visits or no visits at all. While his relationship with his current partner should not be of major concern to you, it is appropriate that you not want your daughter to be exposed to an environment that has the potential to affect her emotional stability and physical safety. Keep doing what you must to protect your child – it is your right and responsibility as a mother. Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton

Dear Koren, I was in an abusive relationship with an alcoholic who I have a child with. He has visitation rights once per week but I am very fearful of him and his abusive relationship which he still has with his current girlfriend. What should I do because I don’t want my daughter exposed to this type of thing? –Concerned Dear Concerned, You have every right to want to protect your daughter from having to witness abusive behavior because children learn what they see. Also, witnessing abuse on a regular basis could leave her feeling very insecure and confused. Be careful how you confront this gentleman. If he is abusive, you have no idea how he will react and you do not want the situation to get worse than it is. Refrain from verbally attacking him or being aggressive as that might cause an unpleasant reaction. Instead, speak to him in calm tones and tell him that the daughter that you share is very sensitive and gets upset when he behaves in an aggressive manner. Ask him to make an effort to be calm around her and if he gets very upset, make sure she is not around if he has to vent. Let him know that you will try to do the same. It is also important that you ask him not to drink

2 Guns 2 Guns is a action comedy where Robert “Bobby” Trench (Denzel Washington) and Michael "Stig" Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) appear to be a team of smugglers freelancing for Mexican kingpin, Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos). Washington and Wahlberg are planning to steal some of Papi’s money from a small-town stateside bank to get his attention and cause him to do something rash but the whole situation blows up in their faces. In fact, it emerges that both are undercover federal agents – Washington is DEA and Wahlberg works for U.S. naval intelligence. Washington’s DEA intends to use the cash as evidence in Greco's prosecution, while Stig's Naval Intelligence superiors want it to fund off-the-books military ops. Still unaware of their conflicting undercover roles, each thinks the other is just a crook who'll be disposed of after the heist. The men rob the bank expecting to get away with what they thought was $3 million of Papi’s money but find that there is $43 million instead and the kicker, its not Papi’s money but the CIA’s. The plot thickens after the heist, Washington is instructed to bring Wahlberg in for questioning. However, Wahlberg is instructed to shoot Washington after the heist and takes the money to his commander Quince (James Marsden) – who in turn doublecrosses him and sets a crew of corrupt Navy toughs guys out to kill him so they can keep the money for themselves. Earl (Bill Paxton) who plays the menacing southern CIA spook who’s been taking a share of the cartel business for years, is set on the case after the bank was robbed and will not rest until he gets every penny

Cast & Credits Denzel Washington------------Robert ‘Bobby’ Trench Mark Wahlberg---------------Michael ‘Stig’ Stigman Paula Patton------------------------------------Deb Bill Paxton--------------------------------------Earl Edward James Olmos--------------------Papi Greco back and will stop at nothing to do so. Washington and Wahlberg are having a lot of fun with these characters as they jostle against each other in various displays of messy bravado. Opposite them, Debbie (Paula Patton) has a thankless sexy-female role, but Olmos is quietly fierce, and Paxton steals every scene as a cocky, sneering villain who leaves a trail of destruction in his wake. Yes, it's very violent, but it's also remarkably edgy and funny, continually catching us off guard with complex character details. And in the end, we hope to see Washington and Wahlberg come out on top. 11

Saucy Sandy ful eyes called Sandy. The hamster settled into her daughters’ room with no problems at all and Sandy was ensconced in her very large cage in a shady part of the deck. One day when I went to visit, Sandy was asleep when I got there and was very quiet. As my friend and I were chatting and laughing in the kitchen, I kept hearing this slightly mocking laugh coming from outside. At first, I though I was imagining it, but after a while as it got louder and louder and the “echo” was very much mimicking my own accent – I realized that I

An 18th Birthday Remembrance Many look forward to turning 18. It was 18 years ago on the afternoon of October 26, 1996, some 22 runners lined up for the first College Classic Series race including Zebalon McLean. Except when he was away to college and missed races, he has run more races than anyone. “It’s hard to believe. We do it every year and time goes by so quickly,” McLean reflected. “There are actually a lot of people, believe it or not, who look forward to the College Classic Series each year. You have little challenges, in-house competitions, but as time goes by, you don’t take stock of how many times you’ve done it – 18 years, that’s a long time.” When it all began, McClean had his doubts as to how long the series would continue. He said he knew it would attract athletes as many of the road races do, and the others who really need the exercise who weren’t athletes, wouldn’t take part. “What we have seen is an increase in the number of persons who aren’t out there training for competition and that is what makes the College Classic Series special,” he noted. “There’s a category and goals for everybody.” McLean remembered our conversation where I invited him to come out and bring as many people as he could, a recurring theme of the series in the early days. “At the end of each race, you’d tell everyone, bring one or two persons and then those two or three would help make it grow,” he recalled. “But, when it started out, there were not many persons who were just in it for recreational purposes so the competition was pretty stiff and I acted pretty much as the defunct rabbit for those guys. They had goals they were working

Roslyn Gilbert & Zebalon McLean

towards so I’d run the first mile pretty hard and pull them along but we had three or four guys who had run under 11:20 including me who was the rabbit,” he remembers. “However, it’s more relaxed now. You have the front of the pack really challenging each other and the rear three quarters in it for the fun and exercise. Back then, because it was a few people, we looked hot and it was competitive.” Roslyn Gilbert has been the longest female participant joining the series in 1997. “It was out there in the air and I just took the challenge because I loved these types of competitions,” Gilbert noted. “My son was just starting to run and that gave me the push to come out here and see what was going on and I enjoyed it. I remember the old dirt road and I was like God, I can’t do this anymore, but, every time I returned, I kept enjoying the races.” Gilbert remembers when the numbers were in the double digits. “I didn’t come out to compete I just enjoyed the races but when I kept getting medal after medal, that encouraged me more to come out and push and appreciate the fellowship with everybody here.” 13

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
