This Week’s Feature Story

Go BVI Youth Sailing Team! Youth sailing in the BVI has come a long way over the last year resulting in more BVI youth participation than in many years at the Columbus Regatta, to be held in St Thomas on the 6th and 7th October. RBVIYC’s Sailing Coach Omari Scott will accompany the BVI Youth Sailing Team to St Thomas this weekend. Originally from Antigua, Omari has been key in building the youth sailing programs and he has proved to be a great role model for many young BVI sailors. The team is very enthusiastic about the event and have their sights set on many of the trophies up for grabs! The “Royal BVI Yacht Club Team Omari,” as they are known, consist of seven of his regular sailors, plus two who are returning from boarding school to take part. Other Team BVI sailors, Sam Morrell and Jason Putley will also be representing the BVI at this international event. Getting young sailors to the necessary standard has been helped enormously and the latest initiative is the Learn to Sail program being offered in cooperation by KATS and RBVIYC, which has been running since mid-September.

This ten-week introduction course is for kids from nine to eleven and aims to progress them from the basics of sailing and safety on the water to higher levels, including competitive sailing ¬– and will be repeated each school term this year. Brian Duff, Director of Sailing Development for the RBVIYC said, "The collaboration between KATS and RBVIYC is producing great results for the BVI Youth Sailing Team. The regular Learn to Sail training sessions and taking part in international events such as the forthcoming Columbus Day Regatta is building their confidence as well as generating their interest in competitive sailing." Chris Ghiorse, KATS Executive Director said, “KATS is an organization that gives children an opportunity to try sports like sailing, that otherwise they may not get. Working with the RBVIYC, we have been able get the Learn to Sail program off the ground and viable.” For more info on the Columbus Day Regatta contact Coach Omari at For RBVIYC youth sailing programs contact Brian on and for KATS, contact Chris at – Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Mother -In- Law Makes Me Uncomfortable

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I’ve been married to my wife for 4 years and we have a two year old daughter. Her mother seems to be acting very strangely, getting forgetful and sometimes she acts paranoid and suspicious as though we are up to something. My wife says it’s just a sign of old age. When my mother-in-law comes to visit, I feel uncomfortable with her around my daughter, especially if we have to go out and leave her to baby-sit but my wife gets upset with me. How do I get her to see that my concerns are real? –Husband

you speak from a place of concern and love, she might be more likely to listen. Another option, less appealing though, is to get some printed information on the condition and have your wife read that. Maybe she prefers a less direct approach and sitting and reading the material on her own could result in an ‘aha’ moment for her. Once one of you is around, it should be okay to let her be around the child. While persons suffering from Alzheimer’s disease can be forgetful, confused, paranoid, misplace things, show poor judgment or change moods frequently, there is no evidence to indicate that they are ever a danger to others in a deliberate way. Leaving her alone with the baby though, is not a good idea as she could forget she is baby-sitting and just leave. I think eventually your wife will be happy that you drew it to her attention as if it is indeed Alzheimer’s disease, then it will require not only seeing a physician, but also planning to ensure her living arrangements are suitable and she is safe.

Dear Husband, Maybe your concerns are legitimate but your method of delivering the message might make it difficult for your wife to accept; if it is coming across as criticism of her mom, she will naturally want to defend her. It’s not easy to imagine that the mother who was always there for you to care and protect and love is now declining mentally. The thought of her mom being confused, paranoid or forgetful cannot be easy for her. I don’t know how strong or pervasive the symptoms are – it could really be just the aging process in action or it is also likely that she is having early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. You may suggest to your wife that you would be willing to accompany her to take her mom to the doctor to rule out that anything serious is happening. If

Stress and the Taxi Summer holidays had just come to an end and a friend’s 18-year-old daughter had been feverishly packing all the things she thought she would need for a year in England. She would be staying with other girls in a house in Bristol and would be looking for a job. Her flight arrangements were to take her from Tortola to Antigua and then to London. She got no sleep on the plane and arrived in the UK quite exhausted but she managed buses, trains and a taxi, all with heavy luggage, to get her to her new address on the other side of England. There was noone in the house so she had to find the water heater, gas stove etc. and finally she flopped into

By Jay Bobbin Q: Will Steve Harvey continue as host of “Family Feud” now that he has his new talk show? A: For the time being, he’s keeping his game show job. That’s not unmanageable for his schedule, which certainly is being kept hopping, since most programs of that type can tape a number of episodes in one day ... sometimes on weekends. Also, “Family Feud” is now produced in Atlanta, where Harvey resides. Add to that the weekday talk show as well as the radio show he does, plus his literary involvements that have yielded several best-sellers, and he certainly is not lacking for activity these days. Q: Why does CBS keep taking people off its morning news program and never tell you where they are now? I loved Erica Hill, and all of a sudden, she’s gone. The same thing happened to Maggie Rodriguez. A: It’s true, that has been a syndrome of that time period — whether occupied by the previous “The Early Show” or the current “CBS This Morning” — and while it’s unlikely a completely frank answer would come from the decision makers, we’ll make that leap here. Once the move has been made to replace a co-anchor, especially at a time of day when viewers become very used to whom they’re watching, a network generally believes a “lame duck” period for the exiting anchor is not in its interest. It would rather move

forward and, as the saying goes, cut its losses. That certainly happened fast with Hill, who vanished from CBS This Morning — after being its last tie to The Early Show at the anchor desk — virtually as soon as Norah O’Donnell was announced as her successor. Hill was said to be discussing “a new role” with the network’s news division, but as of this writing, nothing more was known about that. Q: What happened to the actress who played Mary on “Little House on the Prairie”? I never see her on TV anymore. A: Melissa Sue Anderson resurfaces from time to time, but she decided to make her domestic life as a wife and mother her full-time focus. She has two children with husband Michael Sloan, a television writing and producing veteran whose credits date back to “Quincy,” “B.J. and the Bear,” and the original “Battlestar Galactica.” Those also include the recurring “Mystery Woman” series Kellie Martin made for Hallmark Channel. Sloan was working on the Edward Woodward drama “The Equalizer” when Anderson made several appearances on that show. He also executive produced the Alfred Hitchcock Presents revival that featured her in a couple of stories. Her last major acting credit was the 2006 disaster miniseries sequel 10.5: Apocalypse, in which she played the wife of the U.S. president (Beau Bridges).

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel A fabulous cast and a riveting story combine to make this one of the most charming and unexpected films that I have seen in a long time. Enticingly-pitched, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – a Hotel "For the Elderly and Beautiful" – does not initially live up to the first guests’ expectations, a group of seven British retirees. However slowly, as they all experience life changes – the hotel begins to charm the group in unexpected ways. The eclectic group of new residents include, recently widowed housewife Evelyn (Judi Dench) who must sell her home to cover huge debts, Graham (Tim Wilkinson), a high court judge who lived in India as a boy, who needs to resolve issues from his past. The couple, Jean (Penelope Wilton) and hen-pecked husband Doug (Bill Nighy) are seeking a retirement they can afford and Muriel (Maggie Smith) is a retired housekeeper who needs an inexpensive hip replacement. Wealthy Madge (Celia Imrie) is on the hunt for another husband and last, but not least is Norman (Ronald Pickup), an aging lothario, still on the lookout for one-night stands. Discovering that she cannot even afford the Marigold, Evelyn gets her first job, advising the staff of a marketing call center how to better interact with their British contacts. Madge joins an exclusive club, where she fails to pass herself off as Princess Margaret, and Norman ends up finding love with Carol (Diana Hardcastle), an English life-long resident of India. Graham confides to Evelyn that he is trying to find the boyfriend he regrets abandoning. Accompanied

Evelyn and Doug grow increasingly close, and Jean becomes increasingly jealous of their friendship. Meanwhile, hotel owner Sunny (Dev Patel) has trouble keeping the hotel afloat and is not aided by his mother’s (Lillete Dubey) desire to have him back in Delhi for an arranged marriage, however, Sunny is in love with Sunaina (Tena Desae). Sunny's mother declares the hotel a financial disaster; the residents are told to relocate. However, it is not always that simple once relationships have been formed and confidences restored. So grab a copy and settle in for a good night in as you watch this charming saga unfold. 13

The ‘Beast’ Is Back As CW Launches Update Of ’80s Series prising and wonderful. I got it on our first day of work, and it’s in my trailer, and it feels really cool to have her know about what we’re doing and wishing us well.” As the new Catherine, Kreuk gets to reuse her physical training from her later Smallville work and also from her starring role in the 2009 movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. She confirms, “I want to push the envelope. I really want to challenge myself, and even with Smallville, where we started and where we ended was a huge shift. I think we can do that and do it faster and better here, so I’m excited about that.” Co-star Ryan sports considerably less makeup than Perlman did as the “Beast,” a facial scar the most telling sign of the character’s underlying nature, positioned as the result of a military experiment. His stillhunky look is entirely by design of making the new version as much a romantic saga as an action-mystery piece. “I’ve kind of based this role on his genetic makeup,” Ryan reasons. “He has DNA from many different animals, so I’ve researched the vision of a hawk, the strength of a tiger, all this sort of stuff. It feels like Vincent is the body, but the beast is the disease. It’s trying to come out, and he’s trying to suppress it.” In fact, the “Beast” concept may be more psychological than physical this time. “We started talking about which of us doesn’t love a beast, a guy with a lot of baggage,” executive producer Jennifer Levin says. “We really wanted to feel this was relevant to our lives, and we thought we’d be able to make it more grounded and compelling that way ... more realistic in a way than just a guy who looks like a lion.”

How many ways can a familiar story be told? In one case, the latest version has strong similarities to an earlier one, by its makers’ own admission. Premiering Thursday, Oct. 11, The CW’s take on Beauty and the Beast updates the 1980s CBS series that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, with Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan now playing the central characters, still named Catherine and Vincent. Returning to weekly television — and to The CW — after her long Smallville stint as Lana Lang, Kreuk portrays Catherine as a New York police detective who finally meets the secretive figure (New Zealand native Ryan) responsible for saving her from a yearsearlier attack that killed her mother. He’s watched over her since, and after he rescues her again, a potentially dangerous attraction develops. “When it was brought to us,” explains executive producer Sherri Cooper, “they said, ‘You have the rights to the ’80s show. This would be a reboot or a reimagining.’ We also have three producers from that original show who have been involved and have been great, and that’s why I’m totally open to this new vision of it ... at the same time reminding us that this is a romance and that these people have obstacles. The spirit is the same.” Kreuk knows she has predecessor Hamilton’s blessing, since she reports, “She actually signed photos for Jay and I both, and it was unexpected and sur15
