The CADA Players Presents Steppin’ Out

ALSO THIS WEEK: Jazz on the Hill • Full Moon Parties • Myett’s Margarita Mondays • Water Aid Wine Tasting Event

This Week’s Feature Story

Steppin’ Out: A Dance Extravaganza “excited to bring audiences a taste of just how well our grassroots BVI talent can ‘step out’ to create a very good time for a very good cause.” “These dances are not simple, and it’s a wonderfully diverse group,” adds Joanne Penney, the director of CADA (Community Agency on Drugs and Addiction), who co-founded the CADA Players with Sarah in 1997. The group has produced fifteen stage shows since its inception, including the popular Flambeau, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and HONK. Proceeds from the performance will go to Hands On Volunteers (HOV) which supports 24 young Haitian earthquake victims ranging in age from infants to teens. HOV brings aid directly to these children with on-site visits; providing food, shelter, schooling, medical aid, nurturing and enrichment. For more information go to www.handsonvolunteers.org. Performances begin at 8pm on Friday and Saturday and 6pm on Sunday. Tickets prices are $30 VIP; $25 regular; $15 student; and are available at Vanterpool’s, Supa Valu, Sunny Caribbee or by calling Joanne or Sarah Penney at 494-2324; email dancebvi@gmail.com — Claudia Colli

A Royal Hat-Trick So, it was with a little excitement, and a lot of yawning that I got up very very early to watch the Royal Wedding recently. As I settled in for the big event with friends, we checked the important stuff, like the champagne being to the correct degree of “chilledness” (for the Royal toast of course) and that the large screen TV was in good working order. It was, and so we were all set for the big day. Everyone took their place in front of the large screen TV, where we listened to commentary and waited to see the arrivals, hoping to spot the odd celebrity or two and generally try to soak up the grand atmosphere with the gleaming carriages and parades of shiny soldiers on horseback. Of course, our main interest was in Kate’s dress, however that curiosity dwindled when the congregation started to arrive – in their hats! Hats of all shapes and sizes were being paraded above their owners’ coiffed locks, glamorous wide brimmed hats, hats worn on the side of the head, vertical feather creations (I blame this one on Sex In The City) but it was the really unusual hats that really got everyone’s attention. One in particular, worn by Princess Beatrice became the abiding memory of the day, a Phillip Treacy design who is renowned for his front of forehead hats. London based milliner Phillip

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late edu-cator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Treacy’s startling creation now has its own Facebook page with over 136,000 fans and a gallery of 1,500 photographs and counting. By Friday of last week, joke photographs of people wearing the hat were everywhere on the internet including one with the Star Trek crew using it as a lethal weapon - this attention gained the story the dubious accolade of having “gone viral”. Princess Beatrice was not on her own though, in fact, she was in very good company as Treacy created a total of 35 hats for royal wedding guests including her sister, Princess Eugenie. Other Treacy hats included Victoria Beckham’s small black pillbox hat that she wore on the side of her head and last but not least a fascinating bright blue upturned sailboat concoction for socialite Tara PalmerTompkinson. All this hot air about hats though? Is it not a little trivial with everything else that is happening in the world? Well, in my opinion, if one enjoys wearing them and others enjoy looking at them – whether it be to smile or comment – then where’s the harm in that. And, as Mr Treacy theatrically stated, “Hats are powerful communicators and the whole world is talking about hats now. Hats are the future.” Not really much you can add to that, other than “Beam me up Scotty!”

about her mother, the fact that she entrusted an inept man like Johnny to watch her daughter while she sorts out her personal issues actually tells us very much. The film progresses at a relaxed pace, though I wouldn’t call it slow. There is beauty in the extended scenes where we really get a sense of the mood of the characters. The main focus of the film is celebrity ennui, and the Chateau Marmont is the perfect backdrop for such a subject. Coppola knows a thing or two about celebrity having grown up with a famous father (Francis Ford Coppola), though she insists the film is in no way autobiographical. She does admit drawing from personal experiences for Cleo’s trip to Italy with Johnny for a film premiere, where she walked the red carpet and ate room service gelato in bed with her father. The strength of the film lies in the details, the full picture we see of Johnny Marco and how the relationship with his daughter helps him to mature into the father she needs. Somewhere won the Golden Lion best picture award at the 67th Venice International Film Festival, where it premiered last year.

Somewhere video views Hollywood actor Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) struggles with newfound fame in Sofia Coppola’s latest, Somewhere. When the film opens we meet a man seemingly bored with his fame, living in the notorious Chateau Marmont hotel. Beautiful women are constantly angling for his attention, but he could care less. Johnny is living in a haze, and the only time it clears is when his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) visits. Cleo brings a spark to his life, and when her visits are over Johnny visibly slumps. But when Cleo’s mother, Johnny’s ex-wife, suffers an unexplained breakdown and must “go away” for an indeterminate period of time, Cleo moves in with Johnny. For being just 11, Cleo is quite self sufficient, whipping up from scratch macaroni and cheese and, more impressively, eggs benedict with homemade hollandaise. This is no average preteen, and it’s probably due to her upbringing. We get a sense that Cleo understands Johnny better than he gets himself, and although we know nothing

Should I break up with older man?

Ask Koren

tion of what you bring to the relationship? Friends can have your best interest at heart and see things more objectively and sometimes friends can be jealous. You know them better than I do – so you would be able to assess their motives and decide if you should take their opinions into consideration. If you choose to walk away, let it be because of incompatibility, lack of shared interests or goals, no love, too much baggage, no communication or some other reason that is compelling. Then make the decision that is best for you for the right reasons.

Dear Koren, I am a 19-year-old girl who is dating a 40-year-old man. We have been dating for five months and everything is going great, but my friends think I should break up with him because of his age, but I really like him and he has helped me a lot and I don't want to leave. My friends keep telling me to walk away. What should I do? – Miss Confused Dear Miss Confused, At the age of 19, you are considered an adult, but you are still at the stage where your peers are very important, hence the agony of choosing between what you want and what your friends think is best for you. One of the hallmarks of adulthood is being able to make decisions. You can solicit the advice of friends, family or parents, but you must ultimately make up your own mind. Age is definitely a consideration and also the balance of power, level of maturity and stages you are at in your lives. Both persons in a relationship should have a sense of equality. Also, quite often, teenagers are into their friends, having a social life and in some cases thinking about college, etc. A man who is 40-years-old, might be thinking more about marriage and a career. Are the two of you at the same stage in life? Do you want the same things? Do you treat each other with respect, care, trust and consideration? You mentioned that he helps you a lot; that is commendable. However, if he were not in a position to help you as much financially, would he still be as attractive? Have you ever asked him why he chose you? What are his future plans?
