This Week’s Feature Story

The Secrets out at Chez Bamboo Long known as one of Virgin Gorda’s most popular music venues, Chez Bamboo will now be featuring the island’s hottest new band, Secrets, whose lead singer Shareen Flax is well known in the islands as a calypsonian. The group which also features Walter “Lili” Charles on guitar, Keith “Smokey” Burroughs on keyboard and vocals, and Raslee Bobb on bass and vocals, debuted last Friday, March 11th and will continue its island-style mix of pop, jazz and blues at Chez on March 25th – as well as alternate Fridays thereafter. The restaurant, which is open for dinner seven days a week in season, also features DJ Fatz on the Fridays Secrets doesn’t play, while veteran VG entertainer, Morris Mark sings Caribbean ballads on Tuesdays. “We’re more of a supper and jazz club,” says owner Rosemary Giacinto of Chez Bamboo, who also runs the nearby Bath and Turtle, Spanish Town’s other popular music locale. “When my husband Mike and I bought the

Bath and Turtle in 1988,” she says, “there was music on Wednesday nights, the nights that the clipper ships, the Flying Cloud and Phantom would come into the harbor, and we have kept up the tradition ever since.” These days, the Bath and Turtle carries on its Caribbean sounds with Martino and Marcus Mark’s Profile Band who play at the B & T’s waterfront Rendezvous Bar on Wednesday for Caribbean Buffet night. Martino and Marcus are the sons of Morris Mark who has spent decades on the Virgin Gorda music scene. Music continues on Sundays at the Rendezvous Bar with Leon and the Hot Shots and their get up and dance style fungi music. On Saturday April 2nd Rosemary says that DJ Wiz will be doing a special video DJ show at Chez Bamboo, giving Virgin Gorda residents and visitors yet another reason to stop by and dance at her popular island venues. — Claudia

Stepping into the Blue Occasionally there’s no getting around the need for a paint job and so it was with the spiral staircase in our recently acquired condo. I had removed the carpeting, which had clung to each wooden step for the past twenty years or so, to reveal battered wooden steps, painted black in the distant past. White would not do, as it would show every footprint, so we chose a rather bright blue deck paint, which on a sunny day, would match the nearby Caribbean Sea and on a depressing day would serve to lift our spirits. At the very least it would cheer me up as I tackled the job of painting. Since this was the only access to our upstairs bedroom and bathroom, a method was needed so we would not be stranded downstairs while the paint dried. Two or three hours to the touch, read the instructions on the can, 24 hours before foot traffic and two days before we could drive on it. Since driving on our spiral staircase was not likely, 24 hours would be the mark. I painted the inside half of each stair first, which allowed us a narrow path to the bathroom. The following day, I did the other half, providing an even narrower inside track to the second floor. My steps were now bright blue, but needed a second coat. This would be really

tricky since it was almost impossible to tell new paint from old – unless you stepped on it. If I painted every other step, and limited it to two steps a day, it would not be too taxing on either of us, we’d just have to take big steps for a while. Then friends rang with an invitation to go sailing for three days. “I know,” I said, “we’ll get everything ready and just before we leave, I’ll paint all the steps and they’ll be dry when we get back.” “Great idea,” said Betty. “But remember to start at the top, or I’ll have to go without you.” Next morning, we lined up our provisions and sailing gear by the front door and did a last minute check. Then I started painting. An hour later I was just about done. “Oh,” said Betty as she was putting the last items into her bag. “I forgot my book.” It was, of course, upstairs. “I’ll get it,” I said bravely. This entailed putting my feet carefully on the railings and clinging to the center pole to ascend in a semi-horizontal position. I made it. She was suitably grateful. We headed for the door. “Oh,” I said stopping in my tracks. “I forgot my wallet. It’s upstairs.”

127 Hours Based on the true-life events of Aron Ralston, 127 Hours stars James Franco as Aron, a keen mountain climber who heads to Utah for a weekend alone to enjoy the canyons and wild landscapes in that part of the country. We see that Aron probably makes these trips often. He spontaneously leaves his Colorado home, packing just the essentials for a short trip and drives into the night before sleeping at his destination, ready to rise early on Saturday. On this Cast & Credits trip he runs into two girls, Megan and Kristi, and we discover not Aron Ralston - James Franco only is he extremely fun loving, but also knows the area very well, Megan - Amber Tamblyn and seeks to be a guide. After leaving the girls, he runs with joy Kristi - Kate Mara around the canyon, and that’s when the tragedy strikes. A rock he Rana - Clemence Poesy tested for stability comes loose and follows him on a fall into the Aron's dad - Treat Williams canyon, pinning his arm. Aron is literally between a rock and a hard Aron's mom - Kate Burton place. Sonja - Lizzy Caplan As this is a true story, we go into the movie knowing the outcome. The real Aron is alive and well, living with his wife and son who he has premonitions about during his 127 trapped hours. We also know how he escapes, but watch as he tries everything else first. He engineers an elaborate pulley system in an attempt to lift the rock; he chips away at the rock with a dull knife; he screams, cries, prays for help; he resigns to death, and then he does the last thing imaginable, and begins to cut his arm off. 127 Hours has received much critical acclaim, most to Franco, as he is solo on screen for most of the movie, but also for director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). Despite reports of the intense imagery with the amputation scene, I didn’t find it too graphic. As a whole, the movie deserves the awards it surely will claim in awards season.

Your personal E-therapist is in the house!

Husband Refuses To Go To Church Dear Koren, My husband is a good man. He does not cheat, he takes care of me and our four children and he works hard. The only problem I have with him is that he does not go to church. I was saved about six years ago and believe that nothing in this world matters if God is not in your life. How do I convince him, that he needs to be saved and go to church with us?

cize his unwillingness to do what you do. If he suddenly decided that he enjoys a particular activity and tries to force you to like it too, you might not appreciate that. Encourage family devotion in the home and if he does not join you, then do it in his hearing, so that he can still benefit from the readings, singing, etc. It is important that we recognize that while going to church is very good, it is more important to have a relationship with your God and with others. Create a home that is an oasis – a place of comfort, refreshment and love and continue to take care of your family the best way you can.

–Wife Dear wife, It’s really nice that you have your husband’s best interests at heart and that you are concerned not only that he takes care of you, but also about his wellbeing and the state of his soul. It is commendable that you have gotten saved and that you make church-going a regular part of your routine and take the kids with you. As it relates to your husband, he has to make up his own mind. You can hardly force him or nag him into following your footsteps. Pressuring him could cause him to become very turned-off and make him resistant. The best thing to do is to pray for him and to set a good example. How many persons keep trying to convert family members by word of mouth, but the lives they live, often lead others to question whether they are truly committed Christians. Our actions and behavior are usually more compelling than our words. When you treat him and the children fairly and lovingly, that teaches him a lesson. When he sees that you abstain from gossip, backbiting and immoral behavior, those things will also show a good example. Don’t be judgmental and critiSend questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

SPORTS beat

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Playing in the District A model used by Softball years ago—long before the BVI Basketball Federation was formed in 1974—is being used in bringing basketball back to communities across the territory. In yesteryear, softball games were played on fields in Greenland, Baughers Bay, Road Town, Sea Cows Bay, Capoons Bay, Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay. Teams from each community traveled all around the island to play games, before the sport was centralized in the early 70s, when the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds—formerly the New Recreation Grounds—was the venue. Those games helped spread the popularity sport throughout Tortola and develop a fan base within the communities and in some cases even led to marriages! Fast forward to 2011 and a BD Basketball District League - targeting Under 15 players - is running in the various districts across the territory. Games began over the weekend. While the dynamics of yesteryear and demographics have changed, this attempt in basketball seeks to develop the sport at the grassroots level - a fundamental element for any sport. I’m happy to see that this league targets both boys and girls, especially because basketball - now in its 37th year - has not to date catered to women. This league I hope, will be the catalyst for the development of the sport among women and in years to come, we’ll be talking about our female players as they grow and develop. Hopefully they too would be able to capitalize on opportunities. On Saturday morning, the Belle Vue Gym

was a buzz with league activity and I was able to see some of the District 6 vs District 7 contest, a game where District 6 outclassed their opponents 28-2. Jason Rhymer scored 10 points for District 6. District 9 was just too much for District 1, as they prevailed 55-10. Shakoy Fahie led all scores with 12. Other games saw District 4 beating District 8, 32-15. Jachoy Walwyn had 9 points with eight rebounds for District 4, while John Gomez and Tafari Frett each had 7 points for District 8. In another matchup between the districts in the 13-15 division, District 4 had double doubles from Albert and Kiover Hatchett, in a 37-31 triumph over District 8. Albert had 11 points and 12 boards, while Kiover snatched 10 and 10. Makebo Fahie, in a losing effort, had 23 points. District 4 edged District 2, 19-16, with Jachoy Walwyn top scoring with 8 points. D’Moi Hodge lead District 2 with 10 points and 7 steals. District 8 picked up their first victory in the tournament with a 21 to 13 triumph over District 1. Tafari Frett paced District 8 with 8 points. Cmyoi George led District 1 with his 7 points and snatched 9 rebounds. 19
