Fish Out of Water an effective method, which is what my uncle did to me when I was little. Quite frankly that experience scared me for life. I still love going to the beach and enjoy the water, I just never let the water go past my shoulders. I took some beginner lessons with my 10year-old sister a couple of years ago, but I never got past the first level. I was the only adult in the class and I felt a little ridiculous not to mention all my sisters’ friends would make fun of me. They were all in the third stage of the class while I was learning how to float and doggie paddle. I have since tried learning to swim and lets just say those attempts were also unsuccessful. I’ve vowed that I will become a world class swimmer one of these days, well, maybe not world class but good enough to keep up with my peers. Although, I do remember some of the stuff learned in that first class and I can doggie paddle enough to save my life which, may not be much but hey, I’m well on my way.

A college friend called me complaining about all the snow that she’s had to deal with the last couple of weeks and asked if I could send some sunshine her way. We laughed and got caught up on life and what each other had been up to lately, when she asked, “have you learned how to swim yet?” “Because when I come to the BVI to visit, you have to go swimming with me.” Now, I know living on an island, one quintessential rule is knowing how to swim, unfortunately, I never got that memo. I remembered having conversations with friends when I lived in Canada who couldn’t believe that I am from an island and I didn’t know how to swim, until it became a running joke amongst my friends. They would call me things like “land shark” or make fun of me when we went to the pool because I would always be the one on the shallow end just hanging out. Its not that I never wanted to learn how to swim, it’s just that I don’t think throwing someone into a pool and telling them “swim” is

Cyrus

By Melissa Woodley

John C. Reilly plays John, a man divorced for seven years but still coming to terms with his single life. He and his ex work together, and when she announces that she’s getting married again, he realizes he needs to make a change. She takes him along to a party, and while he bumbles around in awkward social interactions, he eventually finds sweet Molly (Marisa Tomei), and the two hit it off. We see John flourishing – the once lazy couch potato spends all day cleaning and primping his apartment, then cooking in the kitchen in preparation for dinner with his new love. But John feels Molly is hiding something from him, and he follows her when she leaves in the middle of the night. Sleeping in his car, he awakens and decides to “drop by” Molly’s house, and is taken aback to find her grown son Cyrus (Jonah Hill) in the house. From the start, it’s clear that Cyrus is not exactly normal, and he and Molly have an interesting dynamic. Bedroom doors do not ever close, Cyrus’s night terrors draw Molly to his bedside, and John just doesn’t like that look in Cyrus’s eye. He thinks he’s going crazy when his sneakers go missing, and calls in a second opinion from his ex-wife. As the relationship between John and Molly heats up, so does Cyrus’s gameplan – it seems the conniving young man will do anything to tear them apart. I expected more humor from the film, based on the trailer I’d seen, but wasn’t disappointed in the least. What you get is a touching film about different people all trying to find someone to love and their own little place in the world.

Your personal E-therapist is in the house!

Verbally Abusive Father Dear Koren, I am a 19-year old young lady who is verbally abused by my father on a daily basis. He does the same thing to my mother and siblings and what he is saying hurts me to the core. He criticizes everything I do and I feel like I have to walk on eggshells around him. I am tired of being told that I’m not smart or that other people are better than me just because I don’t conform to his standards. Should I keep quiet or speak up and tell him what he has been doing to us is wrong? – Frustrated

might cause him to react unfavourably. Keeping quiet is never the answer when something is bothering you. Anger as well as frustration turned inward, lead to depression, anxiety and physical illness. Try not to internalize his words, but rather, understand that not everyone has sufficient communication skills. Live in a way to make yourself and your family proud of you. Hold your head high and believe in yourself and after a while if he continues, his words will be like water on a duck’s back.

Call 494-2413 to Advertise Today!

Dear Frustrated, That old poem, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is certainly not true. What you are describing is not only verbal abuse, but also emotional abuse. When someone who is supposed to love and protect you, constantly tells you negative things about yourself every single day, it begins to eats away at your very soul and your self esteem. Maybe your family needs to organize an intervention for your dad. An intervention is where you all sit him down and with an outside mediator and in a safe, non-threatening manner, let him know how his behavior is affecting the family. Speak to him not in an accusing tone, but give the facts and say how you feel about them. For example, “Dad, last week when you called me lazy, it made me very sad because I try to do my share of the housework.” This way, he does not feel attacked. You also need to examine yourself. Is your behavior and attitude appropriate and respectful? Although there is no excuse for verbal abuse, if you behave in a rude manner or do things that are not in your best interest, that Send questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided. Gramps Morgan & Talent Search This Saturday's HLSCC concert is a muchanticipated one, as Gramps Morgan will take the stage for what is sure to be a sold-out show. Born into a family of 30 children, Gramps and four of his siblings found success as Morgan Heritage, following the footsteps of their reggae legend father, Denroy Morgan. Since forming in 1990, Morgan Heritage has toured the world over and stopped in Tortola most recently in 2008. While the group pulls on influences from dancehall, punk and new wave in its reggae-centered music, Gramps' solo album "2 Sides of My Heart, Vol. 1" pulls from gospel, R&B and country. The 2009 album which rose to Lime Talent Search Contestants the top of the charts

grandmother’s funeral, she arrived only the night before her competition in Houston. “I knew at that meet it wasn’t me,” she recalled. “But I knew I had to execute at the right time.” Malone won the Triple Jump on Saturday, with another personal best and national record effort that measured 43’3” improving on the 42’6¾” mark she had from Feb 29, 2008. Her mark was the fifth best in Texas’ storied history. She then contributed a 52.69 seconds split to the Longhorns’ B 4 x 400 meters relay that placed fifth in three minutes, 36.22 seconds. But, it wasn’t until her return to Texas that Malone’s feat sunk in when her coach’s daughter told her she knew someone famous who’s first in the nation in the Long Jump and was ranked third in the world. “I was like what?” she recalled. “It’s really motivating, but I’m staying humble and working on becoming better.” With the NCAA qualifier in hand, Malone said she can now focus on getting an auto qualifier in the Triple Jump and work on better execution in the Long. The Longhorns senior said her training has been on a whole different level and her mindset has completely changed. She now focuses on taking one meet at a time and not getting overwhelmed, getting too excited about her progress but concentrating on where she wants to be. Hitting that mark again or better anytime from May 1 through July 8, 2012, and the 2009 and 2010 Sol BVI Jr. Female Athlete of the Year, will be off to London for the Olympic Games. She’s already on track – especially with the consistency she has shown, jumping over 21’ five times in 2010.

A Quintet Performance

Versatile Chantel Malone has been going where no BVI woman has ever gone before, but this time, she has gone even further, in one gigantic leap. Last Friday night at the Razorbacks Invitational in Arkansas, the 19-year-old University of Texas Longhorns senior delivered a scintillating quintet performance. Cutting the sand at 6.65 meters (21’10”) on her third attempt, she won the event; snatched a personal best; established a BVI national record; automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships; and became the territory’s first athlete to book a ticket to Dageu, South Korea, for the Aug 27-Sept 4 IAAF World Championships. What a spine tingling five point delivery on her second Long Jump competition as a senior athlete! Did I say she narrowly missed breaking Marsevette Hooker’s 2006 school record as well, and her jump is the third best in the WORLD? The mark surpassed her 21’6¼” outdoor best established last year. To achieve five things in that one effort is remarkable – but the season has just begun and she has outdoor competition still ahead of her. “I wouldn’t say I was surprised but definitely excited,” Malone told me on Monday. Due to a flight delay on her way back to school following her 2009 & 2010 Sol BVI Jr. Female Athlete of the Year, Chantel Malone 23
