FAI Area Symmington Cup

Win for Vereker at first attempt Vereker St Clements 3 Hyde Rgs 1 Vereker Clements etched their names on the base of the Tom Symmington Cup at the very first time of asking when at headquarters yesterday when they beat a hard working Hyde Rangers XI after a game that was most enjoyable. Cup final nerves were very much in evidence in the early part of the game with Hyde only a pale shadow of the side that so annihilated Geraldines in the semi-final seven days earlier. Vereker were only marginally better but sufficiently so to take a deserved lead after just 12 minutes. In fact Vereker could have had a goal or two more on the scoresheet before Hyde eventually found their feet on the half hour. The losers, when eventually getting to grips with the game, fought extremely hard and began to play some very atVereker St Clements; FAI Area Winners 1989/90; Andrew Pierse, Gary O’Reilly, Robbie Thompson, Eoin O’Donnell, Declan Barriscale, Kieran McInerney, Jim Moynihan, Liam Kennedy, Bro. While Vereker took an early lead it was Hyde who took up most of the running; a fact that was to play against them in the last 15 minutes when they looked a tired side. Despite the weather of the last week the pitch was in great condition. Johnny Kavanagh and John Moynihan were prominent early on and it was no surprise when Clements took the lead; Ger Dunworth racing onto a through ball to fire low beyond a diving Declan Rooney. Hyde began to find their feet and as the half drew to a close Declan Barriscale was called on to deny Seamus Jackson and Matthew Kennedy. Just before the break Hyde won a free on the left. Mike Benson delivered perfectly and James McNamara rose unchallenged to head home the equaliser. The second half was evenly poised and Hyde had a perfect claim for a penalty turned down before Johnny Kavanagh’s flick on with five minutes remaining struck a defender to wrong foot Rooney and give Vereker the lead. With time nearly up Gary O’Reilly scored from a spot kick to put the issue beyond doubt.
