Eighty-Second

Commencement May 20, 2021

Commencement Information Commencement, the climax and recognition of the graduates’ successful completion of their studies, is a joyful yet solemn occasion.

Academic Dress Academic regalia is the formal attire worn by students, faculty, and staff during a Commencement ceremony. It was first worn by scholars in the 11th century. Experts believe that the four-sided cap, or mortarboard, now commonly worn with academic regalia appeared during the 16th century. During the mid-18th century, several American universities started adding custom additions to their gowns. This started to become a widespread trend in the late 19th century and included logos, insignia, and the date the school was founded. This trend also introduced using color to indicate the degree and the college/university. Today, academic regalia generally includes black gowns and sashes for undergraduate students and hoods trimmed in satin for graduate students. A mortarboard cap with a tassel in black or school colors is also worn. LIM College graduates wear a black gown with the College’s insignia on the chest. Students who graduate with Latin Honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) or who have attained other academic distinctions (Fashion Scholars, Delta Mu Delta, Alpha Beta Kappa, Valedictorian, Salutatorian) also wear special sashes or cords.

Honors and Distinctions Graduate Degrees Students graduating with Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degrees wear a hood edged in drab-colored velvet to symbolize Business Administration. The grey and purple colors of the field and chevron on their hoods represent LIM College Graduate Studies.

Valedictorian The honor of Valedictorian is bestowed upon a bachelor’s degree graduate with the highest grade point average (GPA) who has earned a minimum of 70 percent of their credits at LIM College and has completed the degree program within the prescribed timeframe. The Valedictorian wears the President’s Medal on a red ribbon.

Salutatorian The honor of Salutatorian is bestowed upon a bachelor’s degree graduate with the second highest GPA who has earned a minimum of 70 percent of their credits at LIM College and has completed the degree program within the prescribed timeframe. The Salutatorian wears a bronze medal on a purple ribbon. LIM COLLEGE EIGHTY-SECOND COMMENCEMENT

Fashion Scholars Fashion Scholars complete LIM College’s rigorous honors curriculum, fulfilling requirements in business calculus, foreign language, and honors-level study in core courses in business and the liberal arts. Fashion Scholars wear a black hood with the LIM College colors.

Delta Mu Delta LIM College’s Mu Rho Chapter of the Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society inducts students who demonstrate academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and are in the top 20 percent of their class. Members of Delta Mu Delta wear a purple and gold cord.

Alpha Beta Kappa LIM College’s Kappa Zeta Chapter of the Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society inducts students pursuing associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees who demonstrate academic excellence. To be inducted, one must be in the top 20 percent of their class with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher for undergraduate students and a cumulate GPA of 3.8 or higher for graduate students. Members of Alpha Beta Kappa wear a red and navy blue cord.

Latin Honors Subject to completion of all degree requirements and criteria, the designations cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude may be conferred upon the individuals listed herein and upon such others as may meet the requirements. For cum laude, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50; for magna cum laude, a minimum of 3.70; for summa cum laude, a minimum of 3.85 is required. Students who graduate summa cum laude wear a gold sash. Those who graduate magna cum laude wear a double gold cord and those graduating cum laude wear a single gold cord.
