Ed's Note A sprinkling of all things fabulous in this issue. Home improvements, parenting, gardening and photo feedback of the sheer shenanigans at Estate events. High on my list of favourites this month, are the hearty breakfast recipes packed with plant protein, so versatile they’ll work a treat for lunch boxes and on-the-go snacks. What a win! The Ricky Faber duo were on top form with their sets to keep the entertainment pumping throughout the event. Jessica’s provided the delicious aroma of braai’d boerie on rolls which was an absolute sell out. BMW had a range of their enviable vehicles available to test drive on the day, and residents enjoyed and took advantage of the opportunity. Thank you, BMW Clearwater! And man of the day was Donavan of Phyzz Ed Sportz (www.phyzzed.co.za or 076 115 5760) who ran the soccer element of the day and provided an obstacle course for the younger children to keep busy on. Please contact Donavan if you wish to join his soccer coaching in Featherbrooke Estate. Thanks, Featherbrooke, can’t wait to do it again!

EVENT FEEDBACK From Gatsby to Gaga! Words and photos by Shona Jönsson - PR Director

with Bibi

As always, the usual happy festivity at the evening Concert in the Park with the hilarious Bibi who strings and weaves tunes together with her magical voice and side splitting humour. Performing a variety of classics from Gatsby to Gaga, Bibi’s concert was again outstanding. As a bonus surprise, Bibi ended her show with the most magnificent duet rendition of Lady’s Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” prompted by a visit from artist Greunen Parker, who then was persuaded by the audience to perform a few items on his own. Looking forward to hearing what she has planned for her next concert when we invite her back.

Next Concert in the Park is on Friday 29 October with Jacques Lagesse - Sinatra & Friends! More information to follow through our communication channels

Wise Words

when your children talk back

Stock image: freepik.com

Ref: www.allprodad.com

Nothing makes correcting a child more frustrating than to have him or her constantly “back talk” or offer a response or defence to everything you say. It’s doubly upsetting if those retorts are disrespectful. So how do you nip this backtalk habit? You lay a foundation of respect. You target the talking back and take it on. While you don’t want to engage in a lot of back-andforth verbal volleyball with your child, sometimes the right response can calm the waters and defuse common kid tactics to distract from the real issues. continue on page 12

Wise Words

when your children talk back Continued from page 11

A wise dad will measure his words carefully when responding to backtalk so parental authority doesn’t dissolve in a verbal tug of war. The last thing you want is to engage in a lengthy back-andforth with your child. This only encourages future arguments about rules and boundaries. But when you think your child’s backtalk deserves a response, here are some wise words when your children talk back..

“Fair isn’t the same as equal or identical.” “That’s not fair!” Children like to believe that the only just way for them to be treated is exactly the same as their siblings or friends. But fair isn’t the same as equal or identical. Dad Response: “I will always try to treat you and your brothers and sisters fairly, but I won’t always treat you the same. That’s because you are each different, just like everyone in the world is different from each other.”

The last thing you want is to engage in a lengthy back-and-forth with your child.

“Everyone else gets to do it!” Kids like to pressure parents by comparing them to other parents. Dad Response: “Well, what other parents choose to do may not be right for us. In our family we believe _____________, so that’s how we’ll decide about this too.”

“You don’t trust me.” Older kids will try to guilt parents who set boundaries by acting as if the implied lack of trust is damaging your parent-child relationship.

Stock image: freepik.com

Dad Response: “Even if I trust you, which I do, my main job is to keep you safe. So, in this case, it’s not about trusting you. It’s about keeping you safe and/or looking out for what you need.” continue on page 13

Wise Words

when your children talk back Continued from page 12

“I don’t have to do what you say.” This is one of those cases of backtalk that shows defiance and disrespect and should be dealt with accordingly. Dad Response: Dad looks behind the kid and says, “Who are you talking to? I know you’re not talking to me.” That’s the give the kid a chance to correct his or her attitude approach. You can follow it with, “OK, maybe you want to try that again.” If your kids don’t get the point and keep talking back, take a stronger approach, “I am your parent, and whether you think I’m right or wrong, you owe me respect and obedience. Because your attitude and words are showing neither, your consequence is…” (Note: This only has value if the consequence has an impact and you have the backbone to enforce it.)

“Mumble, mumble.”

“I am your parent, and whether you think I’m right or wrong, you owe me respect and obedience."

This is the ploy of the child who wants to get the last word. You’ve said your piece, but the kid won’t let it drop. He or she either keeps pushing or mumbles under his or her breath. Either way, it’s a power play. Dad Response: “OK, I’ve listened to what you have to say and I’ve asked you to stop talking.” From there, you either can say, “If you want to get to do __________, you will not say another word.” Or, “If you say another word about this, I will __________.”

As a final thought, ask this question which will lead to a discussion with your kids when they back chat:

“So, how do you respond when you feel disrespected?”

Breakfast Recipes

Ref: www.lentils.org

The tradition of eating a morning meal has existed since ancient times, though it was not until the 15th century that "breakfast" came into use in written English to describe it, literally meaning "to break the fasting period of the prior night"; in Old English, the corresponding term was "morgenmete", meaning "morning meal". Sprouted Lentil Granola Parfait Make extra granola and bring it along on a hike, to work, to school or have it as a quick snack before bed!

Ingredients ½ cup (125 ml) split red lentils ¼ cup (60 ml) rolled oats ¼ cup (60 ml) shredded coconut ¼ cup (60 ml) pumpkin seeds 3 Tbsp (45 ml) hemp hearts (seeds) 2 tsp (10 ml) canola oil 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp (20 ml) honey 1 Tbsp (15 ml) orange zest (1/2 orange, zested) 1/3 cup (80 ml) dried cranberries or blueberries 1 container (650 grams) yogurt, flavour of your choosing 1 cup (250 ml) mixed fresh berries

Method 1. PREHEAT the oven to 180°C. 2. RINSE lentils under cool water until most of the starch washes off and the water runs clear. Soak the lentils in water for at least 12 hours, rinsing the lentils and replacing the water at least 2-3 times. 3. DRAIN the lentils well. On a baking tray lined with parchment paper, scatter the lentils evenly and roast in the oven for approximately 30 minutes, until they become dry and slightly crunchy. While baking, flip the lentils over every 10 minutes with a spatula to make sure they roast evenly. 4. LIGHTLY toast the pumpkin seeds in a pan, and set aside in large mixing bowl. 5. TOSS the roasted lentils, oats, and hemp hearts with the toasted coconut and pumpkin seeds. Mix in the oil, honey, and orange zest, making sure everything is combined well. 6. SCATTER the mixture on a tray lined with parchment paper and roast for 15-20 minutes. Toss the hot mixture back into the large bowl and mix in the dried berries. Set aside to cool. 7. PLACE half of the yogurt in a parfait bowl or a deep glass dish. Scatter half of the granola on top with half of the berries. Layer the rest of the yogurt and scatter the remaining granola and berries. 8. DRIZZLE with the remaining 1 tsp of honey.

Blueberry Oatmeal Lentil Muffins Switch it up by mixing in your favourite fruits or nuts!

Ingredients ¼ cup (60 ml) split red lentils ¼ cup (60 ml) old-fashioned (large flake) oats 1½ cups (375 ml) all-purpose flour ½ cup (125 ml) brown sugar, packed 1 Tbsp (15 ml) baking powder ½ tsp (2 ml) ground cinnamon ¼ tsp (1 ml) salt ½ cup (125 ml) milk 1 large egg ¼ cup (60 ml) melted butter or canola oil 1 cup (250 ml) fresh or frozen blueberries (If using frozen berries, do not thaw)

Method 1. PREHEAT the oven to 200˚C and line 12 muffin cups with paper liners. 2. BRING the lentils and oats to a simmer in a medium saucepan with 1 cup of water. Boil for 10-15 minutes or until the water is absorbed, the oats have cooked, and the lentils have begun to break down. 3. WHISK together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Once the oatmeal and lentils have cooled to a lukewarm temperature, stir in the milk, egg, and melted butter or oil. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients along with the blueberries (and any other fruits or nuts you like) and stir just until combined; do not worry about getting all the lumps out of the batter. 4. FILL the paper-lined muffin cups and bake for 20 minutes, until pale golden and springy to the touch.

Landscaping Design Tips & Ideas Continued from page 23

Idea 1 Make a list of needs and wants. Do you want to grow vegetables? Would your family gather on a patio? Do your kids need a play space? Do some very rough sketches of the yard with thoughts of where you want to place things; it’s a great organizing principle for landscape design for beginners.

Idea 2 Study the sun and wind patterns. You might want to place a patio on the west side of the house, but it will get lots of afternoon sun, which means dinnertime in Summer won’t be relaxing — just hot. And wind whistling around a corner will quickly extinguish a

fire pit. Those are common mistakes in landscape design for beginners. Your design should take into account what the sun and wind do at different times of the day and year.

Idea 3 Live with it for a while. Coming to quick conclusions about your yard can lead to choices that don’t work in the long term.

Idea 4 Start small. Television shows are masters at revealing complete outdoor makeovers in just three days — but they have a crew of 60, which is not a situation

continue on page 25

Featherbrooke News  10 2021 24

Landscaping Design Tips & Ideas Continued from page 24

Idea 6 Focus on scale and pacing. It’s the trickiest principle in landscape design for beginners, but scale and pacing give your yard a pulled-together look. There will be variations in size, shape, and colour, with tall plants against a building or in the back of a flowerbed, and paths that lead people through the space.

Idea 7 enjoyed by landscape design for beginners. Part of creating a landscape is slowly developing a plan and enjoying the process. From your master plan, start with a small flowerbed. Go out and work on it for an hour or two when you have the time, and worry less about filing everything up right away.

Idea 5

Stock image: freepik.com

Any good garden design has a focal point or series of focal points, and it’s an easy principle to put in place in landscape design for beginners. Work around the focal point, which may be a sculpture, or a stunning plant, a tree, or a series of shrubs.

Be open to change. Unless you’re strongly devoted to something, be honest about what you like — and what may fall out of favour.

Remember: Patience is key to landscape design for beginners. If all of that bare space

is too much to look at, and the kids and dogs are tracking in mud, rely on temporary solutions — annuals, fast-growing groundcovers that you don’t care about for the long term, even mulch — to cover an area while you’re figuring out what you want. Large landscaping features like trees can be hard to move; annuals can be taken out, and small perennials and shrubs can be transplanted if you realize they’re in the wrong spot. Beauty and braai area are not always naturally synonymous. This exquisite combination of braai and leisure patio designed by Wayne Anderson finds the balance between practicality and décor, and pulls it together - perfectly on point. Alfresco Area A SUMMER HOUSE Continued from page 27

Points to consider: • A built-in braai is both neat and practical. • Exposed beams give you the illusion of more space. • Built-in counters on either side of the braai offers plenty of space to prepare food, serve the meal and store utensils. • Carefully selected furniture and accessories take this braai area from boring to beautiful. • Impactful black and white tiles create a bold accent point and pulls together the entire look. The focus wall behind the braai is painted with Paintsmiths “Hoop Iron” and the rest of the walls with Paintsmiths “Almost There”.
