REACH YOUR GOALS&

GET MOTIVATED

WRITTEN BY : Priscilla Green

HOW DO I GET MOTIVATED? As a University manager, teacher/trainer, mother and editor I’ve had my fair share of challenges when motivating myself, staff, students and especially my child. Often I have felt more like a Cheer Leader than a manager, teacher or mother. However this has given me ample insight into how to find the root of anyone’s motivation. It is different for everyone.

SO WHERE DO YOU START? Sure you can motivate people with money, bonuses or special rewards upon achievement of a task. However the greatest way to motivate anyone is to engage them in activities they are passionate about. Personal motivation ‘to reach your goals’ requires you to tap into exactly this. Before we get stuck into what your goals are, you need to be very in tune with your unique specific needs and inspiration.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Some people are motivated to ACTION in a bid to CHANGE their current circumstances. This is a great motivator. Think about it, what would ENTICE you into ACTION? The promise of: • • • • • • • •

Freedom? Travel? Time with friends & family? A new home? A fulfilling job? A child? A new wardrobe? To look in the mirror and be satisfied?

You can MOTIVATE yourself with BIG or SMALL GOALS. However, the important factor is that they are ACHIEVABLE. So WHAT IS MOTIVATION & DRIVE and why do some people seem to possess it and others do not?

MASLOWS HIERACHY OF NEEDS Meanings: Having achieved self actualisation. The need to help others self actualise

The need to improve ourselves, learn, develop and grow our skills and reach our full potential

Selftranscendence

Self-actualisation needs

Internal: Self respect, independence sense of achievement. External: Respect of others, status, attention.

Esteem needs

Acceptance affection and a feeling of belonging

Social needs

Ensuring the continuity of our physiological need. Stability, security. We cannot live without food, air, water, sleep, shelter, comfortable temperature

Security needs

Examples as goals to motivate you: To be dedicated to helping others with goals you have already achieved. To study, read, participate in activities, work on and achieve goals. To ‘FEEL’ good about your accomplishments, satisfied and content. Achieve a position of respect in career, socially or in the family To have created healthy nurturing and lasting social connections and relationships To have secured a job, an income, a home, a safe place.

To have basic food, air, water, sleep, shelter, comfortable temperature

Physiological needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs It is best to go back to basics to unravel your own MOTIVATION. Since the beginning of time humans have possessed a set of basic needs. In business or management Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is often used.

each of these levels are achieved we move on to the higher need, and so and so on. Therefore based on this philosophy the goal in LIFE is to work your way through them and achieve Self Transcendence.

The diagram above shows the hierarchy of needs. The right side explains how these may link to your life goals. The base of the triangle shows how we all start with basic needs and as

With an understanding of the hierarchy of needs it is much easier to move on to creating a set of goals for yourself and your future.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT MOTIVATES YOU, YOU CAN NOW USE THIS INFORMATION TO HELP PLAN OUT YOUR GOALS. You will need to categorise YOUR GOALS into: • • •

When writing these you can start by writing down all your short and long term goals together based upon what motivates you. As mentioned in the previous page you can use the graphic to help prompt you. Below I have listed some examples to help inspire you to create a list of long and short term goals.

SO HOW DO I STICK TO IT? This format for presenting life goals was shared to you. with me by an amazing trainer/financial planner that I had the privilege of working Above is an example of how to present this with at RMIT University. part of your goals. He suggested the use of pictures of the things that you desire or the people you love to motivate you. A bit like a mini ‘vision board’. The other unique and critical aspect of this format is that it includes some goals for your ‘daily’ life and words that inspire you. On this page you can include: Some important motivational quotes, extracts from poems or passages, some daily expectation and goals and what is important

These daily goals can help you to change your daily life immediately by reminding yourself what sort of person you want to be and what sort of people you want in your life. Most importantly it reminds you of what your values and ethics are and how to eliminate anything from your life that does not fit with or support this lifestyle. It is a very basic tool but incredibly powerful. Good Luck! Tell us how you are doing with it at the LILY Mag Facebook page.

“A FAIR DINKUM BUSINESS” WE INTERVIEW AN INSPIRING ENTREPRENER WITH AN EASY GOING AND ETHICAL APPROACH TO HIS ‘GROWING’ BUSINESS. Leigh Nankervis tells us about his journey to creating Fair Dinkum Seeds and the challenges Leigh and his wife Manami have overcome.

awesome cards and craft items my wife makes.

You have an interesting and ethical philosophy about how you provide your service/products. Can you describe it?

Our little niche is that we grow our own, and sell fresh to you. All our seeds and cards have free postage nationwide, or capped at $4.50 maximum for international delivery. All our stuff is interesting, it’s all Non-GMO, and it’s all grown properly, the old fashioned way. No Chemicals, no dodgy F1 hybrids that don’t grow true, no machinery, harvesters, slashers, rotary hoes, tractors, seed sorters, packing machines, none of that high tech nonsense, and all of our seed is less than 12 months old, no exceptions. It’s all just “Fair-Dinkum-Seeds”.

It’s a simple theory really. If I wouldn’t be happy with it, then I just don’t sell it. We want you happy. We want you to grow and thoroughly enjoy, whatever it is you get from us. We want you to get that same warm feeling of satisfaction that we get when we succeed with something new. It’s the main driving force behind our products, your enjoyment and satisfaction. We also really want you to come back and buy more! So the happier the better I reckon!

Specifically what services/products do you offer? Well that’s an easy one! We offer seeds, plants and

What’s unique about your products and the process you go through to create them?

When we get something cool from one of our suppliers or customers (gotta love the barter system!) we grow it ourselves. If it survives our tough conditions and lack of attention, and if it grows true to form, and it is easy to

grow, harvest, and pack, and it is considered worthy of keeping due to its taste, form, or medicinal benefits after extensive testing by our expert quality control panel (me and the Mrs), then, and only then, we grow a crop for seed harvest and sale. Not many make it that far. If they die for whatever reason, they only get one more chance. No mucking around with stuff that’s difficult as there are just too many other awesome plants we could be growing instead!

Did you start your career in this field? No. Both my wife and I have had a pretty wide range of menial jobs, the majority of them in hospitality or farms. Neither of us were very tech savvy in the beginning (or now to be honest), it seems to be the way of the future, so we are having a serious crack at it.

crime, pollution and horrible fast paced lifestyle of the city, so for the last few years we focused on fruit picking and farm labouring which was really great. Loved the outdoors, and the work itself was hard but very rewarding. The only problem was, it was seasonal. As soon as we settled down to a routine and started to put down some roots, start a garden and get a bit ahead, the season would finish and we were back to square one. So when you say why the change of pace, I would have to say poverty. It’s the greatest motivator of all! We lack both the skills and motivation to work a “real 9-5 job”, and definitely didn’t want to move back to the city. We figured at least this way if we grow our own we will be broke, but we won’t be hungry when the seasonal work runs out.

Why the change of pace? We started out as transient labouring workers. Initially in hospitality and then in fruit picking. We got sick of the

Turns out that was the best idea we have ever had! We were right about the broke bit, but we seriously

CONT...

“There a whole host of great reasons for growing your own, like cost, variety, entertainment, learning, lower greenhouse gas emissions, providing habitat for the critters, it’s good karma, you know exactly what’s in it because you put it there, its healthier!” What are your goals for your business? Our main goals for the business are pretty simple. Get more organised, and get everything looking more professional. We have a real handle on the seasons here, we have the go ahead to keep going the way we are from the landlord, and we have a system in place for crop rotation that is really working well now. We have semi-flood and drought proofed the place so that should make things a lot easier than in the beginning. The owner of the property has kindly added another water tank so now we have drinking water all through Summer. Now it’s really just putting in the hours to edit and advertise our huge range of plants.

What direction do you envisage your business going? UP! Way way up! (We are starting at the bottom, so that’s

pretty much a given.) Seriously though, we now have a website and are not solely reliant on eBay and Facebook for income. That’s a big weight off our minds, and a big saving I can pass along to our customers. If the economy booms, lots more folks will start to grow their own for the added health benefits, and because they cant get a lot of the weird and wonderful stuff we grow in their local greengrocer or supermarket. If the economy crashes lots more folks will start to grow their own out of necessity. Either way the market for organic seed supplies is growing, and I can only see us getting bigger, as our quality is so much better, and our range is growing at a faster rate than the “competition”.

What’s so important about growing your own food? Enjoyment. There are a whole host of things that are great reasons for growing your own, like cost, variety,

LILY Life & Style OD

entertainment, learning, lower greenhouse gas emissions, providing habitat for the critters, it’s good karma, you know exactly what’s in it because you put it there, its healthier, but I would still have to say the main reason is enjoyment. You start with no tomatoes, and you think to yourself “I would like some tomatoes”. So you plant some, and they die or get eaten by bugs at worst, even though you totally failed, you didn’t lose ANYTHING. You just still don’t have tomatoes, and the world didn’t end before when you didn’t have them, so you will be just fine. BUT, that sense of achievement and pride you get when you actually do succeed, and end up eating that first tomato, just wow! It really can’t be beat. So much better than any shop tomato!

What are your top 5 tips for creating a home veggie garden? That’s another easy one. Steps 1-5. Just do it. Don’t think, don’t procrastinate, don’t plan to,

035

and don’t carry on. If you want a garden, plant a garden. Scrape up whatever you can from whatever you have easily available and have a crack. After all, you still have that hankering for tomatoes, and the magical tomato genie isn’t gonna make it happen! My first garden was an old margarine container when I lived in a caravan in my teens. I banged a couple hole is the bottom of the tub with a pen and put the lid underneath to catch the drips. Handful of soil I grabbed from the driveway and a couple of tomato seeds I scraped off the cutting board from when I made a sandwich. I grew 3 sad little mangled tomatoes on my white fly covered spindly little plant but, felt like a total legend! You can’t beat that feeling and its only by failing you get better so I say, have a crack folks! CONT... What advice would you give anyone thinking of starting business with an ethical model like yours? The more the merrier. There is nothing stopping you guys from doing whatever it is you want to do, and as long as you make the “making folks happy” bit, as your main objective, you can’t really fail. Even if you don’t get the financial rewards you would like, karma will sort it out and you will get rewarded in a whole host of other ways, regardless.

Some of the pits and peeks of your experience? Well I’m not gonna lie, we have had a few dramas. We were used to a much more consistent rainfall than we get here so water was, and still is a major issue for us. As were the critters. For the first 6month we had no issues at all but after the Kangaroos, Wallabies, Bettongs and Bandicoots worked out our dogs just want to be friends instead of eating them like the previous tenants, yeah, we lost a lot of plants. Easily 200 varieties in that first 12months, and as we had put all our savings into it it was quite a blow. Then there was the scamming “customers” claiming non-delivery, repeatedly. Ebay competitors falsely reporting items. Ebay “trust and safety team” removing items and placing restrictions on my ability to sell for a whole host of bizarre reasons. Confusion with customs and quarantine legislation caused us some issues too, and lets not forget the big Bundy flood. We lost a heap of stuff that was down at the dam, but more importantly I was unable to get to town and post out the orders due to the roads being meters underwater. However, every single time a new drama crops up, it’s just an opportunity to learn a little bit more. I’m glad all these things happened and in every case, without that happening, it wouldn’t have led us to where we are now. For that I’m very grateful. So, at the end of the day, after the initial stress and drama, all those “pits”, were really just peaks in disguise. It’s been great doing this for the last few years and just waking up here, listening to the birds sing is fantastic. Spending the day planting and picking and packing and posting, and spending the nights answering emails, writing up new adverts and bagging up hundreds of packets of seeds. It all takes a long time, it all takes it out of you, and we are quite tired, quite often, but it’s not a “job”, its a lifestyle, and we really love it. You can’t get a bigger peak than a day in our life, I reckon! If you want to have a look at our range the best place to start is here at our website.

6 STAGE PROCESS GETTING STARTED IN PROPERTY INVESTEMENT BY FOLLOWING A RECEIPE WITH THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS AND TIME THE RESULT IS A PROVEN FORMULA. Lisa explains how PropertyAu can help you get started with this 6 step process. With it you will be on your way to rapid passive wealth creation through property investment. You will learn how to attain a series of passive income streams, coupled with a ‘buy and hold’ investment strategy that can be with you for life. There is a series of steps which becomes a cycle. Step 1: Investor Psychology session, a goal setting exercise & ‘Due Diligence’ commencement. Where are you now? Where do you want to be? What has held you back in the past? Setting clear goals enables us to create a road map with you and your investment partners. This entails exploring where you want to get to that is within your reach and comfort level. Safety is always FIRST! Do you begin with a ‘clean slate’, or is consolidation needed? Is it lifestyle additions you’re looking to add, like a new car? Is it seeking ongoing multiple alternative income streams to protect yourself and loved ones and redefine your relationship with a ‘JOB.’ When working with our clients after this session they are given 2 referrals as well as a series of Due Diligence access kits to start educating themselves. Step 2: Referral exercise – Seeking a professional opinion on your current situation. What is your financial capacity? Many times we have clients amalgamate their existing relationships with bankers and brokers, in addition, we provide a cost and obligation free assessment to double check figures as we have a national panel in place. Step 3: Referral exercise – Asset Protection & Additional Income Assessment. It is important to workshop where this income sits within other household incomes? Should you have Asset Protection in the form of a trust?

WRITTEN BY

A pretty top can work for you. The print helps to break up your upper body, it nips you in at the waist, hence minimising your figure. For this top (bottom left) to look great, your tummy should be smaller from your side profile than your breasts, otherwise it will make your tummy look bigger than it is.

His guide to buying lingerie Most men know nothing about picking out lingerie. What type of lingerie to buy, what size, what color - how is a man to know? Here is a little guide to help you when choosing lingerie for that special someone.

There are a few things to consider before you go out shopping. What does she like? Remember that you will not be wearing this - she will and you should go out with the intent on getting something she will like. If she is not into lacey, tiny, see-through teddies, chances are if you buy that, she will not be in much of a mood to wear it and you may never see it. So keep what she likes in mind.

HIS GUIDE

TO LINGERIE

If you do not know, check out her nightwear and lingerie drawer before you leave. Check for material type (cotton, silk, etc.), colors, and most importantly, size. She may be flattered if she wears a large and you get her a small, but if she wears a small and you buy her a large, you may find yourself in trouble. Avoid anything that says “control on the label. Those items are used to firm and flatten tummys and rears and she would probably not appreciate receiving them as a gift.

If you are uncomfortable in the store, check out online stores that sell lingerie. Most major department stores like Macys, Nordstroms, David Jones, Myer sell lingerie. Remember to keep your receipt just in case it is the wrong style, size, or color.

HIS GUIDE TO LINGERIE Now, what type of lingerie is available? Just about anything you can think of! Ask yourself what the occasion is. Is this to let her know you love her? If so, something crotchless or see-through probably will not send that message. But, if it is for Valentine’s Day or your anniversary, something a little more risquÊ might be appreciated.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP OFFENDERS

REOFFENDING Written by Mary Mummert

Lily Online Magazine is a community partner with Empowered and Beautiful an online domestic violence support network. Through this network we have established lasting relationships with survivors. We are currently in the process of building more relationships with both Australian and international support networks to assist them with educating communities on domestic violence and helping to break the silence. This silence perpetuates domestic violence which is plaguing western society with as many at 1 in 4 women experiencing domestic violence and yet it remains one of the most taboo crimes of modern society. In this issue we provide a platform for one inspiring survivor Mary Mummert to share her experience and observations on ‘What can be done to stop offenders reoffending’.

So, What can be done to stop offenders reoffending? Mary explains... Those who have been victims of domestic violence know all too well how lax the laws can be in some cases. Offenders simply get a slap on the wrist in most cases and keep reoffending because they think that they can get away with it.

Take my state for example. In the Commonwealth of Virginia the sentencing guidelines in most cases give the offender the bare minimum sentence. Assault being the most common charge in domestic violence cases. In my personal experience I have seen offenders be convicted, only then to be sentenced to unsupervised probation and they walk free. No jail time served.

‘In my honest opinion probation should be mandatory to ensure there is less of a chance for offenders to reoffend. ‘

LILY Life & Style OD

081

Counselling should be ordered for the offender to help him/her to understand their behaviour and how they can prevent it. A lot of offenders have a history of drug/alcohol abuse. Getting help for these addictions won’t ensure that they won’t reoffend again. What needs to happen is that the state needs to enforce the sentencing for these offenders and make them serve the maximum time.

sometimes they don’t qualify for them because the locality doesn’t perceive an increased need.

Part of the problem is offenders have too much leeway to bend the system. For example I’ve seen offenders served protective orders only to violate them by stalking or harassing a victim’s family members. Some judges turn a blind eye to the fact that people’s lives are at stake. A person could be arrested and then flat-out violate the bond and be given further charges while the current court case is pending.

In conclusion it’s my observation that communities, law enforcement offenders and victims alike need to be further educated. The Commonwealth needs to further strengthen and enforce the laws. By working together we all can get these numbers down and help prevent further tragedies from happening.

A current case that I am dealing with is where my neighbour was brutally attacked by an ex. He was taken to jail, charged with strangulation and abduction. He was taken to jail and bond was granted. He proceeded to intimidate the victim by stalking her and following her in her vehicle. He was again arrested and again bonded out of jail. I know the police cannot personally protect each person that has a protective order, but if the offender violates it then they need to be jailed or held without bond. Law enforcement officers aren’t in my opinion educated enough on the dangers and signs of domestic violence. They often turn a blind eye and rarely offer the victim any type of support. They might recommend that the victim go to a shelter or get help from human/social services. Funding for shelters is another big issue. Insufficient funds in each state for shelters means they have to rely on local funding. Many shelters rely on grants and

Only in recent years have the words like “against a family member” been added to charges for assault. Strangulation is another charge that was rarely heard of until the last few years. The frightening reality is that even if an offender is given such a charge they are still released from jail.

You can read Marys personal story of survival of domestic violence in our Aug-Sept ‘13 issue. www.empoweredandbeautiful.com

WORKPLACE YOGA – WHY WOULDN’T YOU? Written by Leonie Lockwood Flowing Life Yoga and Meditation

I’m often asked why I became a yoga teacher. For me the answer is pretty simple – it changed my life. Yoga has taken me away from depression, anger and anxiety and moved me to a place of happiness, reduced fear, relative contentment and love. That’s the broad sweep of the matter, but of course it’s really not that simple and the journey was long and arduous at times, as change can be. If it was not for the short term of yoga that was instituted in my then workplace about 12 years ago, my life path would have been quite different. Like so many of us, I was working in a high pressure environment, with demanding clients that I was able to do very little for. After some years this became soul destroying and my coping mechanism was to have a drink after work with colleagues,

moan about the day and slink home in exhaustion. I wasn’t convinced that the yoga term proposed for my workplace was going to have much of an effect on me. The classes took place before work and I started to notice on those days that I was clearer in my decision making, more productive with a brighter outlook overall as my mind, body and being seemed in sync. This feeling of synchronicity was something I began to crave, so I sought out other yoga classes close to my work and soon found myself participating in classes three times a week. By taking the small step to participate in a workplace yoga class, I set myself onto a path of change where yoga now features pretty much every day and has become a lifestyle, which I love to share with others.

LILY Life & Style OD

083

Now obviously this path is not for everyone but yoga balances all aspects of the body – mentally and physically, so a dose of that once or twice a week can only serve to make life a little rosier.

Flowing Life Yoga is offering the first 5 workplaces that sign up for a 10 week term of yoga, an 11th class free.

Yoga postures stimulate the muscles, connective tissues and the internal organs, assisting in the removal of waste from these areas and building strength in the body. There is a focus on developing regular breathing patterns to tap into the parasympathetic nervous system assisting in the reduction of stress related hormones. And lastly by attempting to focus the mind to stay present, the practitioner participates in a moving meditation. Beneficial, no matter what your faith. Overall we benefit from improved digestion, better circulation, more balanced hormones, increased mental resilience, reduced mood disorders, improved stability and endurance to name a few. Being in better balance we are able to keep our minds open to new possibilities and ways of thinking about ourselves and others. This can lead to increased job satisfaction or even just a better way to deal with those aspects of our workplace that we don’t like so much.

www.flowinglife.com.au Facebook page www.facebook.com/flowinglifemelbourne

(head on over and ‘like’it) Now that I teach yoga in workplaces I am in the observer’s role and I can see incremental changes in people from week to week that perhaps they are unable to see within themselves. At times it is two steps forward and one back, but in general the journey is forward. As a teacher, it is pleasing for me to watch people grow stronger, to have a safe place to set aside fears and explore their bodies and minds using the tools of postures, breath and meditation. Not all of us are disgruntled with our jobs like I was, but I believe that what we learn in our yoga practice helps us to blossom, accept ourselves and accept the one thing in life that is a surety – change.
