Swedish Cup in Arjeplog Once Again

Ice racing on the former BOSCH tracks on Lake Hornavan, at the end of the 80’s.

The first ice racing competition of the Swedish Cup will be held at Lippi on Sunday March 4. This is the first ice racing competition for cars to be held in Arjeplog since the late ‘80s and about 40 cars will compete in four different classes. Rolf Laestander, from the local snow-mobile association, said that the competition is to be held here in Arjeplog because there is no ice in Kalix. Thanks to the availability of Stefan Hallnor’s private ice tracks on

Lippi (on the Silver Road between the centre of Arjeplog and BOSCH) they were able to accept the offer to arrange this prestigious competition. There are four classes based on the length of the spikes on the tyres. Class one has 23 mm long spikes and class two, 13 mm. There are also two classes using rally tyres. Two locals, Martin Åberg and Magnus Holmgren, will also compete. They started practising before they knew that the first competition in the

Swedish Cup would be held here. Laestander said that it is all very exciting and they are expecting that between 500 - 1000 people will be coming to watch.

This & That

How to Prepare & Eat Moose Meat

• Pia Wallström rents out her house to

Moose and reindeer constitute a large part of the staple diet of the locals. You can buy the meat of these animals at Viltbutiken, Lena’s Fish Shop, Coop or ICA. However, it is important to know how to prepare the various the parts of the animal in order to get the most flavour. Helena Johansson from Viltbutiken in Arjeplog explains how she would prepare the different parts of the moose. In next week’s issue, we will present her tips for preparing reindeer meat.

Mando car testers from Korea. She was pleasantly surpised the other day when she came to her house and saw what they had created from ice and snow. She said, “So creative my guests have been during their spare time”.

• Football evenings are very popular. Pizzeria Verona have been showing all the sports channels on large screeens both this season and last season. Starting tonight, Hotel Silverhatten will also now be holding football evenings. They will be showing Bundesliga och Champions League football matches on large screens and offering special menus.

• Hornavan Hotell will not be serving

lunch to the public on Friday March 2, as the restaurant is fully booked.

• A car was attacked by a moose! Even

if you manage to stop your car when a moose appears on the road there is a chance of a close encounter. A woman in the north did just that and the moose attacked the car and managed to make some dents and break one of the rear-view mirrors.

• It is important to stay on the pre-

pared tracks on the lakes as the ice on the lakes is not strong everywhere. According to the local newspapers, a small test truck went off the prepared ice tracks and when the tow truck arrived to fetch it, the truck had gone through the ice and was on the bottom of the lake. No person was hurt.

Candid interview with a car tester

The Hot Seat Name: Sav Costanzo.

And if I must find a complaint it is that there isn’t so much entertainment to choose from.

Age: 61. Family: My wife, Elisabeth, 2 grown-up children and 5 grandchildren.

What music do you enjoy? First of all, rock and blues, which is what I sing as well. I also like to listen to soul and funk and jazz. I do not like modern music such as ‘house’.

Home: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England.

What is important in life? To have a good balance between work and play. I am not so philosophical but I think it is important to lead a life where you are good to yourself and to others. Try to be good with everyone and find an acceptable work-home balance.

Company: Caterpillar/Perkins. Occupation: I am a technician and here in Arjeplog I am the team leader for our proving test area. Favourite food: Italian cuisine. Dream car: Audi R8, white. Present car: I just gave my BMW to our daughter. Now we have an Astra Twintop (convertible). Red in colour, (my wife’s choice). Spare time activities: I sing in a rock band, which I have done since I was 16. I must be the oldest rocker in town! I like mountain walking in the lake district, Wales and Scotland. I love gardening, and spending time with my family. In Arjeplog I like to take in the local sites and I like to keep fit. I went to the gym at the sports centre for the first time this week. I think the facilities are so good and the staff are helpful and friendly, and that applies even to the youngsters.

Sav Costanzo, Caterpillar/Perkins

And of course, we go to Harry’s where we enjoy a meal and a drink. What is good in Arjeplog? The test facilities at Colmis are fantastic. It is a well-run organization. The people here are approachable and friendly and it is a wonderful feeling when people just trust you without knowing who you are. This is very unusual in other parts of the world. For example when I came to Johan at LiLAB for help with my iPad and he just lent me a charger, without even knowing who I was. We were all very impressed. What is bad in Arjeplog? Nothing really. I find the cost of living high here and we think things are expensive.

Testing Machines in the Cold Climate Caterpillar/Perkins are in Arjeplog doing test work on machines. These ‘testers’ cannot really be called ‘car testers’, in the true sense of the term, as they are not testing vehicles or components for vehicles. They are here doing cold climate testing of heavy machinery for industries such as construction and agriculture. They work on the integration of engines and machines such as tractors, diggers, generators and compressors. The Caterpillar/Perkins company have been coming to Arjeplog for cold climate testing for three years as all components and engines must be tested for the cold and must function in all climates.

Development is Not That Complicated

O

ne of the problems we have in Arjeplog is that there are too few citizens. At the same time the population of Sweden is growing in number. Compared to many other countries, we are still a small country, but when I started school in the early 70’s, I learned that our population was 8 million people and that Arjeplog municipality had 4,400 inhabitants. Today, there are almost 9,5 million inhabitants in Sweden and 3,100 inhabitants in Arjeplog. This is not a good trend, but unfortunately, a trend that we share with many of our neighbouring municipalities. For us, the answer is divided into two parts. One is that people like to live here. The second is that they have to be able to make a living here.

T

he car-testing industry brings a lot of work for us, in wintertime and many empty hotel rooms in the summer. More visitors in the summer would provide better opportunities for jobs in the service businesses all year round. We are trying to take steps in that direction. We would like to improve access to showrooms - for small trade shows and other events. And we are discussing how to inform people about the car-testing industry. We want to start by creating an exhibition about the car testing history. We will have to do this by dividing it into several smaller steps. But we will definitely start.

W

hat determines whether it is attractive to live here? I think many of us are happy with the way that we live. It feels safe and secure to live here. Even if our youngsters sometimes behave badly we know where they are. We would like it if everyone behaved well, but we are aware that most of them can and do behave well.

I

think that more people would like to have what we have. But there are things that make people hesitate. One such thing, I think, is the availability of a variety of cultural activities. Last weekend we saw a good example of this when Arjeplog again was visited by some of our country’s finest actors and some of the films they participated in were shown. Our film festival is considered the world’s smallest - but the nicest! And it gave me and others a real boost of positive energy. For now and for the future.

Elin Lestander, Cartest & Knorr Bremse – this week’s local Name: Elin Lestander.

What’s good in Arjeplog? There are a lot of good things here. When you have children, as I do, you think about a good place for your children to grow up and Arjeplog is definitely such a place. Everyone knows everyone and it feels safe. It is also close wherever you are going, it is such a small place. Another good thing is that it is just as close or far to Skellefteå, Piteå and Luleå, three big towns, so we have a large number of possibilities to choose from. I also love nature here, the outdoor life and snow mobiling and I am happy that I appreciate these things.

Age: 26. Family: I am engaged to Peter and have two children, Signe aged 3 and Sally 1,5. Home: Arjeplog. I lived with my family from age 5 to12 in Saudia Arabia where my father was working. We returned to Arjeplog when I was about 12 and I continued my schooling here. I met Peter in Arjeplog where he was studying at the secondary high school (BST-programme). We went to his home town in Härjedalen (middle of Sweden, close to the Norwegian border) where we lived for 5 years. Now we are back in Arjeplog. Occupation: I work for Cartest and am a coordinator for Knorr Bremse. I enjoy this work, I am a social person and like working with people. Favourite food: Sushi and because there is no sushi restaurant here in Arjeplog I have to make my own. Dream car: Audi R8 GT Spider, black. Present car: Saab 95 in gold. We also have a Nissan Sunny, a little, old, gray car that we have as an second car.

Ferrari vs Bentley on Ice Side by side with the car and component testing industry in Arjeplog, many people come here to drive and learn to drive on ice tracks. BBC’s popular motor TV show, Top Gear, were in Arjeplog recently to test a Ferrari FF and a Bentley Continental GT on an icy replica of the Silverstone circuit, which is at Cartest. See theTop Gear, programme Season 18, episode 4.

Elin Lestander, Cartest & Knorr Bremse

Spare-time activities: I spend time with my family and friends. I enjoy evenings at home. I am a winter girl and enjoy the spring-winter season, especially now when it is getting lighter and warmer. I love going on the snow-mobile, sitting in the snow having a barbecue over an open fire with my family. I missed the snow at Christmas time when we lived in Saudi Arabia, but we travelled so much and I have my parents to thank that as a child I experienced so much and got a different perspective of life. I feel content now to be here in Arjeplog and I enjoy the winter and the fresh, clean air.

What’s bad in Arjeplog? The fact that everyone knows everyone and that it is so small here can also be a disadvantage. For example, if you want to be alone and not see anyone, it is very difficult. Even when you go shopping, you meet people you know. Mostly this is good, but sometimes, for example, if you are going through a life crisis, it would be nice to just be able to walk around and be anonymous. This is impossible here. What music do you listen to? Hard rock! I like groups such as In Flames, Backyard Babies and The Poodles. What’s important in life? To listen to your gut feeling. To avoid wasting energy on people who drain you. My family is important and also to be happy with the decisions you make.

Locals are Concerned and Ashamed In last week’s issue of The Arjeplog Times we published a letter from a car tester who was dismayed at what he felt was increasingly bad behavior from some of the locals. This has caused a lot of debate among the locals. Via mails, facebook and visits we have received a lot of input about this really bad development in Arjeplog. One woman even says she does not dare to go outside certain nights. “People drive snow-mobiles and cars on the pavements and it is easy to see that they are not sober,” she said. Some of the younger people defend this ‘wild west’ behavior of heavy drinking, driving snow-mobiles and cars drunk as well as fighting. They say things like ‘boys will be boys’ and some even think that car testers should not complain because some of them also drink and drive. It is a strange attitude that unless you are perfect you are not allowed to complain. Well, no-one is perfect and luckily, people will continue to complain and point out unacceptable behaviour.

Most locals, however, are concerned and ashamed that Arjeplog is getting such a bad reputation. Even the people creating the problem are becoming aware that other locals do not like the fact that a small group of individuals continue to behave badly. One person thought that the culprits should be made aware that they are disgracing Arjeplog. Unfortunately, most people know that the risk of being caught by the police is minimal. So, some blame the police or lack of police here. Others blame the parents for being bad examples and not taking care of their children. Bars and pubs are criticized for serving alcohol to people obviously too drunk. The guards working at dances are blamed for having a very high level of tolerance, allowing, for example, very drunk people to remain in the restaurant or at the dance. It all boils down to an attitude that has to change. People have to show those involved that it is not acceptable to behave badly.

Don’t hesitate to phone 112 If you see someone obviously drunk and misbehaving you should call the emergency number 112. Anders Holmlund is one of two police officers in Arjeplog, the other one is Tina Hallin. They feel that it is impossible for them to keep order, especially at night. “We are not even allowed to be on stand-by when we are not on duty,” said Anders ‘Håbbe’ Holmlund. He would like everybody to phone 112 as soon as they see something bad happening here in Arjeplog. He does not think that the cops from the coast would bother to come all this way for less than a murder. However, he believes that the only way to make the authorities aware of the problems is to keep reporting everything that happens, regardless if they come here or not. In the Arvidsjaur-Arjeplog area, six police jobs have been cut back. “This is totally unacceptable,” says Håbbe.

Stefan Gives Young People Something to Do When Robin Hallnor started to show an interest in racing on the ice a few years ago, his father Stefan decided to make his own ice track. They live in Lippi (five kms from the centre of Arjeplog) and they have access to a lake. Robin is in New Zealand now but Stefan continues to prepare tracks which he has made available to the young people of Arjeplog. He provides
