Morris – Africa’s Lifting Legend Morris has been supplying lifting equipment to the South African Market since 1952 and have secured an enviable record within the Sub Saharan region for quality and reliability. he product range at Morris is predominantly based around the ABUS range of lifting equipment, a range supplied from ABUS in Germany. These units are manufactured to the highest of European Standards and Morris have had the Sub Saharan Agency for this product range for over a decade and the units have proven themselves in thousands of different environments and applications and the challenging and brutal South African market.

Bryn goes on to say that in his 48 years with Morris, South Africa is a market full of challenges in the crane Industry, particularly in the mining and smelter Industries, challenges which only really exist in the Australian and South American markets. These challenges are certainly different to the European markets. By understanding our Clients’ needs as well as the market requirements, Morris is best suited to fulfil all expectations.

Keeping abreast of changing Regulations as well as keeping abreast of the latest technological advancements within the Lifting Industry keeps Morris at the forefront of the market in Africa and enables us to offer our Clients high quality and extremely safe lifting equipment. Vanguard Heavy-Lift Strand Jacking Solution – Safe, Precise, Cost Effective The application of Strand Jacking Technology by international heavy-lift specialist Vanguard, is proving to be an economical solution for clients, while enhancing worker safety and performance quality.

The Strand Jacks forms part of Vanguard’s extensive range of specialised heavy-lift equipment, which also includes hydraulic lift systems, jack and slide systems, rigging and installation equipment and a variety of specialised cranes.

Recently, Vanguard had been requested to assist with lifting and placing preassembled sections of a stockpile conveyor gantry into position 30 metres above ground level. The initial request

was to execute these works using large cranes, with the final construction being done at height.

Vanguard conceptualised and engineered an alternative project solution using Strand Jacks, according to Vanguard’s Roger Rousseau.

The Strand Jacks forms part of Vanguard’s extensive range of specialised heavy-lift equipment “While Strand Jacks have been in use globally for some time, their versatility and benefits are not well known in the field of steel construction in southern Africa and therefore are often unobserved, ” said Rousseau.

“Using this technology, our engineered project solution allowed our client to complete the assembly of each gantry section on the ground, improving the level of safety and the speed of the work, while facilitating closer quality control. It was also more economical, as the cost of deploying large cranes for an extended period is very high and uncompromising in the face of any unforeseen delays in schedule.”

The sections that were lifted comprised three weighing 115 tonnes each, and a fourth weighing 150 tonnes including a tripper car; each gantry section was 50.4 metres in length. The strand jacks have a lifting capacity of 70 tonnes each, and the contract employed four jacks at different points to lift the load. The conveyor gantries were connected to, and lifted by, the stand jacks using high-tensile steel cables, known as strands.

The lifting itself was computer-controlled through intelligent software that operated the four jacks in unison, so they could grip and pull the strands over a ‘stroke’ distance of about half a metre at a time.

To construct the framework in which the jacks could operate, four lattice towers were erected and connected horizontally by two pairs of header beams, one pair on either end of the load. Two platforms – each carrying two strand jacks –were individually placed on a pair of headers beams.

This arrangement also allowed for the lateral movement of the load to the required position.

iebherr LR 1600/2 crawler crane lets Airbus A-300 “fly” The service life of the "Zero-G" parabolic aircraft came to an end with a spectacular hoist over the fence at Cologne-Bonn Airport. The heavy load experts from Riga Mainz hoisted the 82-tonne Airbus A-300 from the airport's apron using a Liebherr LR 1600/2 crawler crane and a sophisticated combination of attachment equipment. The aircraft will now become a museum exhibit on show to the general public.

Sophisticated hanging gear: the combination of cross beams and spreaders was able to adjust its angle to the appropriate centre of gravity using an electric chain hoist.

oth the specifications for the crane job at the airport, such as its limited set-up height, and the requirements for attaching the sensitive load were very stringent. In fact there are only three attachment points on the entire aircraft with the required load capacity – both main sets of landing gear and an area at the front of the Airbus' fuselage.

The attachment equipment weighed a total of 19 tonnes and included two cross beams and three load spreaders developed by Riga Mainz. A remote controlled chain hoist was used to adjust the crane hook precisely over the overall centre of gravity, even when it was loaded. This made it possible to adjust the required angle of the aircraft to the horizontal to generate no upthrust in the

event of wind and inflows from the front. This solution satisfied a major requirement specified by the customer.

"Zero-G" required around one hour for its last "flight" over the airport security fence. The Airbus, which measures around 54 metres in length, was turned almost imperceptibly slowly into its final position. The LR 1600/2 with its curious load then covered a distance of around 20 metres on a specially laid gravel bed.

Placing the future museum exhibit on three foundation points proved to be something of a long-winded procedure.

Minor corrections had to be made to the construction before the crane driver Markus Knabe was able to position his unusual load with millimetre precision. Airport manager Michael Garvens did not hold back with his praise after the job had been successfully completed: "Absolute precision work and a great result."

I Tibor Szana, appointed as Chief Inspector in terms of section 27(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, acting in terms of the powers vested in me by regulation 18(11) of the Driven Machinery Regulations published under Government Notice R 540 of 24 June 2015, hereby give notice that as from 9 December 2015, all applications for approval from a person or organization who provides training to operators of lifting machines listed in the National Code of Practice for the Training Providers of Lifting Machine Operators, will henceforth only be entertained if it is accompanied by a valid certificate issued by Transport Seta, established in terms of Skills Development Act, No 37 of 2008, which has been authorized by the Chief Inspector, to carry out such accreditation.
