Go to www.2010healthandwellbeing.org.uk to see what’s happening across the region. There are 5 ways to wellbeing that are proven to make a real difference to your life so throughout 2010 we will be asking you to build these into your daily routine.

Connect… with the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Be active… Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Take notice… Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters.

Keep learning… Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

Give… Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with people around you. Evidence shows that building these actions into your daily life can add 7.5 years to your life!

John McEnroe said: “I am really looking forward to returning to Liverpool to play in the International Tennis Tournament alongside other great players and young and upcoming talent. I like the idea of playing in a public park on grass courts in front of

Rookie Lifeguards The Rookie Lifeguard programme is the junior award scheme of the Royal Life Saving Society UK. It is a great opportunity to explore water safety and alternative safe aquatic play. The Rookie skills will prepare Rookies to take better care of themselves, their families and friends and gives them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain survival, rescue and sport skills as well as life support and water safety elements. Rookie Lifeguard took place over February and April half terms at Liverpool Aquatics Centre. It was funded by the Splash Initiative. 40 young people between the ages of 7-12yrs attended the 5 day course 2 hrs per day. They learnt how to recognise potentially dangerous situations: frozen lakes, the meaning of beach flags and signs found in park lakes, swimming pools, and canals etc. How to recognise medical

conditions such as heart attacks and epilepsy and perform basic first aid. They were also taught how to perform basic CPR and put casualties in the recovery positions. They were rewarded with a recognised Rookie award badge. This is a nationally recognised certificate. It also gives children an insight into the role and responsibilities of a lifeguard.

great shape! Shape is a whole new approach to weight loss. It is a 12 week, holistic based programme about changing the way you think and feel about yourself and the food you eat Since June 2009 Shape has grown in popularity and now has over 40 members! In January Shape invited council staff to join the programme and kick start their New Year resolutions. The group of 14 council staff that signed up for the course has lost a total of 12 stone between them, only 6 weeks in with another 6 weeks to go! The group are set training times exclusive for Shape members and the group, who never used a gym before, are now exercising on average 3 times a week and using lifts instead of the stairs! The programme was started by Leanne Wall and is currently exclusive to Lifestyles Millennium. Anyone interested in the programme please contact Lifestyles Millennium on 0151 233 4123.

The tournament has run for the past 4 years, growing each year in both size and popularity. Players from all over the United Kingdom are now being attracted to enter the event, this year we had over 276 entries coming from as far as Devon, South Wales, Scotland, The Isle Of Man and even Ireland! The weekend of the 13th and 14th February saw the mini tennis events being played. These events are for children aged from 6-10 years old. The rounds produced some outstanding tennis from the boys and girls across all the age groups. There were some fantastic battles fought on court with some unbelievable rallies and superb shots played. The competition then got to the Semi Finals and Finals.
