This month at West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle, we bring you our Eco issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Inspired by the infinite beauty of our community—and our desire to preserve and protect it—we compiled an array of eco-conscious and eco-friendly people and places making a difference locally. From an eco-minded artist, to a restaurant that sources local and sustainable food, and a business with environmentally friendly practices, this issue is a celebration of all things Mother Nature. We share a great weekend getaway to explore all the beauty and grandeur of the outdoors at Red River Gorge and details on how to start your own monarch butterfly garden.

LOCAL ARTIST GIVES NEW LIFE TO OLD ITEMS ARTICLE TERA MICHELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY ERIC THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY

O F R E C Y C L I N G 18

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | April 2019

WELCOME TO THE STUDIO OF LOCAL ARTIST CAROLYN MCGOWAN, AN ALTERNATE GALAXY OF GLOSSY DISCS OF ALL SIZES, SWIRLING WITH COLOR. Hiding underneath the twists and cells of paint lie unlikely canvases—old-school record albums, compact discs and wood tabletops, given a second chance as unique works of art. Using a technique called paint pouring, McGowan brings new life to old objects. “I fell in love with acrylic pouring because it’s so unusual,” Carolyn says. Carolyn's workshop is an eco-haven. Centered around a work table crafted from a wooden shipping crate, the vibrant space is a showcase of her works. In one corner, a wood tabletop dries, awaiting a unique base so it can be recycled into custom furniture. She pulls from a stash of saved yogurt cups in which she prepares paints. Carolyn even reuses her leftovers, fashioning acrylic skins and drippings into one-of-a-kind coasters, trivets, clocks and wearable art: necklaces, earrings and shoes. “Some of my art is functional—it has a usefulness. I do both functional art and art for the pure pleasure of making it,” she explains. Carolyn grew up in Liberty Township, surrounded by a loving family. At a young age, she enjoyed school art classes. Her breakthrough as an artist came recently, when her adoptive parents encouraged her to meet her birth mother. As she unearthed her biological roots, she found shared interests in art, photography and travel. The stars aligned, guiding this gifted artist through a personal journey of self-discovery that drove her back to her first love—art. “About four years ago, I found my birth mom. She came to visit and saw some of my paintings I had done in high school,” Carolyn says. “She is an attorney, but she is also an artist. For my birthday that year she gifted me some really nice art supplies. I started taking some classes so I could use them.” Inspired by the ocean and international adventures, Carolyn leans toward bright pinks and earthy blue and brown hues with splashes of metallics. In her studio, science meets art and function collides with fashion, bringing color to our world. “I love it and think anyone can do it. The more people who do art in this world, the better,” she says.

In a four-month, million-dollar renovation, Basil’s On Market has transformed the grand 15,000-square-foot space on a busy Mason corner. With its fresh vibe and from-scratch kitchen, it brings fare fit for foodies to the suburbs—all at affordable prices. Come to see the slick and modern design, but stay for the food. Open seven days a week, Basil’s On Market serves sustainable and local foods, including vegetarian and gluten-free options—perfect for a weekday lunch, date night or dinner with the whole family. “We are not upscale. We are casual dining that gives you great food and drinks at a great value,” says Jeff Finkelstein, restaurateur at Basil’s On Market. “We are a come-as-you-are, eat-what-you-want type of setting. We want to see you here with your family and friends.”

WEST CHESTER YOUTH GROUP BUILDS GARDEN TO SAVE MONARCHS ARTICLE KATIE BRAY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | April 2019

IF YOU’RE NOT SEEING AS MANY MONARCH BUTTERFLIES IN YOUR GARDEN AS YOU USED TO, THERE’S A REASON FOR THAT. In fact, it’s become a problem in North America that many are trying hard to mend, including a local youth group at Christ the King Lutheran Church in West Chester. This past fall, teens and their parents planted seeds to cultivate an expansive monarch butterfly garden at the church, which has become a certified Monarch Waystation. A Monarch Waystation habitat is a place that provides resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration. According to the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the population of monarch butterflies has been steadily declining for the past two decades, primarily due to habitat loss, pesticides and rising temperatures. In fact, the western population faces extinction in the next 20 years. So, when church member Donna Pellegrin and her daughter discovered 11 starving monarch caterpillars in their home garden, they knew they had to act fast. Donna turned to Susan Fox, a retired landscape architect, avid gardener and leader of the Green Team (an eco-

HOST OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE NETWORKS OF MOUNTAINS, TUNNELS, NATURAL BRIDGES AND CANYONS IN THE AREA, RED RIVER GORGE STANDS APART AS AN EXAMPLE OF UNTAMED NATURAL BEAUTY. What’s even better is that this unexpected oasis is practically in our backyard; a quick jaunt of two and a half hours, Red River Gorge makes for a

+

great short weekend trip or longer outdoor adventure.

STAY IN A PICTURESQUE CABIN Most available rentals in the Red River Gorge area are mom-and-pop owned, lovingly created cabins. Experience the rustic charm of having a fireplace while taking in the beauty of nature right outside the door. There are even some treehouses, which are small houses on stilts, that

+

make you feel like you are truly immersed with the wildlife of the Gorge.

EXPERIENCE WORLD-CLASS ROCK CLIMBING One of the biggest draws to “the Red” (as climbers call it) is the amazing opportunity to scale rock faces and see the breathtaking views from atop the craggy mountains. While most people don’t have enough experienced climbing buddies to climb on their own, the many guides in the area can help you select lower intensity climbing opportunities and can make sure you stay safe

+

while you try your hands and feet at a new sport.

TAKE A THRILLING ZIPLINE TOUR One of the best ways to get a rush without having to put in too much physical effort is to take a zipline tour. Ziplines allow riders to clip into a safety harness and slide across long, secure cables, taking in the view from hundreds of feet above the ground. Red River Gorge Zipline Tours allows you to cover a lot of sights from above, with unforgettable memories of the first time you jumped out into open space to see the view.

HIKE TO GRAY’S ARCH AND THE SKY BRIDGE The Red River Gorge is crisscrossed with a variety of hiking trails; most are well maintained and even passable when a little rain is coming down. While the general beauty of babbling brooks, picturesque bridges and greenery of all kinds is well worth the walk, Red River Gorge also boasts amazing geological structures. Both Gray’s Arch and Sky Bridge (which actually allows you to walk on top of the arch!) offer amazing views of the valleys surrounding them, and

+

have interesting geological features to learn about when you bring children along for the trip.

KAYAK THE RED RIVER For some wet summer fun, book a kayaking trip down the Red River; depending on how tumultuous the water is when you visit, you may be able to handle your kayak on your own or want to row with a guide. Either way, seeing the sights from the perspective of being on the water can help you

+

to connect with the beautiful way that water has carved the Gorge over time.

EXPLORE THE GLADIE VISITOR’S CENTER If you get a particularly rainy day or just want a break from the outdoors, stop by the Visitor’s Center.  The interpretative exhibits will offer insight into what makes the Red River Gorge Geological Area so interesting and unique, as well as background on the cultural heritage of the area. If you stop by early in your stay, you can notice some of the geological formations described at the Visitor’s Center when hiking or kayaking through the wilderness. RedRiverGorge.com

TRADE LAUNDRY FOR MORE TIME DOING THE THINGS YOU LOVE

John Eckstein

IMAGINE NOT HAVING TO DO LAUNDRY ANY MORE. Clean, pressed clothes would instead be sitting on hangers, waiting for you when you get home after a long day’s work. This is what inspired West Chester resident John Eckstein to start Laundry Reimagined after retiring from 22 years at Cintas. Laundry Reimagined is a service designed for people who value their time and want to spend less of it sorting, washing, drying and folding laundry. They pick up your dirty laundry and return it cleaned within two days. All of your garments are provided on hangers. All other items sorted, folded and wrapped for easy put away. “If you do laundry every week like most people, you’re investing several hours in it. We can give those hours back to you,” John explains. “You could be spending that effort on something that’s more important to you.” When he began his business last year, John made it a point to invest in eco-conscious methods so he’s not harming the environment—or your clothing.

1. PLANT-BASED PRODUCTS “There are a number of plant-based and dye-free hypoallergenic products out there. We are happy to use whatever the customer desires, but we find that more natural products are not as hard on your clothing,” John explains. “They keep your clothing looking better longer.”

2. RECYCLING HANGERS “I supply new hangers as needed, but my customers are really good about returning and recycling their hangers,” John says.

3. DAMP DRY “When you over-dry clothing, it can cause hems to curl, seams to shrink, and it creates more lint. By going to hangers for all of your garments, we can pull them out a little damp and hang them up,” John explains. “In a short time they’re dry. Drying clothes just until they’re damp is easier on the clothes and easier on the environment.” To learn more, go online. LaundryReimagined.com 42
