Over the past three years we’ve had a lot of amazing and memorable photo shoots, but this month’s cover story was by far the most fun we’ve had working on a story. Our team spent a day behind the scenes at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, getting up close and personal with Fiona and her friends. Inside we’ll share some of our favorite stories and photos from this amazing local attraction. If you enjoy al fresco dining or having a cocktail while watching the sunset, flip to page 42. We’ve scoured the area to compile some of our favorite local bars and restaurants with outdoor patios. If a backyard barbeque is more your style, we’re showcasing three local outdoor living spaces to inspire you to create a unique backyard area. We’ve also provided

ideas for creating your own summer treats and lawn games to spice up your next summer get-together.

LIBERTY TRUSTEES ADVANCE WALKABILITY VISION In May, the Liberty Township Board of Trustees approved a resolution to take another step towards the vision for a more pedestrian-friendly community. A feasibility study was approved to take a closer look at a connection from Liberty Center over State Route 129 to Cincinnati Children's Liberty Campus and the Liberty Commons Kroger Marketplace development. The study, led by LJB, Inc., will explore both a combined pedestrian/vehicular bridge connection along with a pedestrian-only bridge. The study will be completed by the end of the year and provide Liberty Township with more information

THE ULTIMATE PATIO A perfect outdoor oasis, this cozy family room lies just outside the back door. This Liberty Township residence features a covered patio with the works: a couch, fireplace, TV, mini-fridge and grill. The space offers this family of four a perfect area to kick back and relax. For a pop of color, the family added patterned pillows and decorative accents, which pull in splashes of bright summer hues. A ceiling fan keeps them cool on the hottest of days, and you could add string lights to dress up an evening affair. 18

GATHER AND GRILL

When summer nights turn a little cooler, nothing beats sitting around a fire, except perhaps having a beautiful stone firepit built right into the patio. This West Chester home features a firepit area alongside a covered patio, perfect for hosting a grill out and then roasting marshmallows by the fire. Kids and adults alike love s’mores, so what could be better than building a permanent s’more station into your backyard. To add a splash of summer, the family utilized colorful chair cushions and pillows in the dining area. This home is currently on the market. PERFECT FOR PLAY Ever heard of GaGa ball? A variant of dodgeball, GaGa ball combines dodging, striking, running and jumping, with the objective of being the last person standing. Players hit the ball at each other with their hands and are eliminated if the ball strikes them on or below the knee. When this West Chester family had to remove fallen trees in their backyard, they decided to build a GaGa ball pit in the open space, offering their children and neighborhood friends a place to have fun together. The Turf Tailor used composite materials to build the pit so it wouldn’t require any maintenance, then filled it with tire mulch and built a gravel walkway to the pit. It’s become a favorite place for adults and kids alike.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS CARING LIKE ANGELS & HEROES OFFERS HELPING HANDS TO NEIGHBORS IN NEED

WEST CHESTER AND LIBERTY TOWNSHIP ARE OVERFLOWING WITH GOOD NEIGHBORS. A partnership of three compassionate organizations under one caring umbrella, Caring Like Angels & Heroes is designed to strengthen our community by offering help for our neighbors in need. Together, they honor those who often get overlooked: caregivers for the ill and aging; struggling individuals and families; and military heroes. This trio of volunteer-run funds is ready to be called in to action, especially to help local residents. “We pray every day that they don’t need us, but we are happy to be here if they do,” shares Bill Lack, Co-Chair of Caring Like Angels & Heroes and Chair of The Heroes’ Fund. WHETHER YOU ARE EIGHT YEARS OLD OR 88 YEARS OLD, THERE IS TRULY SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE CINCINNATI ZOO & BOTANICAL GARDEN. And that’s not just a marketing slogan; we saw it firsthand as West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle was granted behind-the-scenes access to four of the coolest exhibits. From the exhibits themselves to the food to the train ride and more, Cincinnati’s zoo continues to transcend generations, making it one of the top zoos in the country.

GORILLA WORLD Zookeeper: Ashley Ashcraft

If there’s one exhibit that will make you feel right at home, it’s Gorilla World. Most like humans, the group of 10 gorillas features several family units, including Jomo (pictured) and his daughters Mondika and Elle. Young Elle was born in 2015 and became the fiftieth gorilla born at the Cincinnati Zoo. “Elle has so much energy,” Ashcraft says. “They are very socially dynamic and it’s fun to see them interact with each other.” Built in 1978, Gorilla World was one of the first large naturalistic primate exhibits in the world. Upon entering the outdoor space, you’re immersed in a simulated African jungle. Recently, an indoor gorilla habitat opened to the public, with floor-toceiling viewing glass that will help the Zoo continue to inspire gorilla conservation by getting visitors #CloseEnoughToCare as they watch and engage with the Zoo’s gorillas.

Two.

HIPPO COVE Zookeeper: Christina Gorsuch

Does “Fiona” ring a bell? We met the famous, spunky one-and-a-half-year-old during our tour, and she and her mom, Bibi, welcomed us with open arms (err, mouths). Born on January 24, 2017, Fiona was six weeks premature, a situation that most doubted she would survive. “No hippo born more than five days early has ever survived,” Gorsuch explains. “But now, she’s a totally normal hippo.” The reason for her survival? Team Fiona, a group of eight people who cared for her 24/7 for seven weeks. She was hand-fed bottles and stayed in a 98-degree room with another human for nearly two months. Visiting her now, you wouldn’t know she had a tough start or that Bibi didn’t raise her initially. The pair casually swam up to us during the tour and seemed to love the attention—both from their visitors and fans around the world.

(CON TI N U ED)

A F R I C A N S AVA N N A H Zookeeper: Christina Gorsuch

Perhaps the most eclectic group of animals at the Cincinnati Zoo resides in the mixed-species exhibit: African Savannah. Here, you can transport yourself to an African Safari and meet the Zoo’s warthog, wildebeest, meerkats, vultures and more. “It’s our island of misfits,” Gorsuch jokes. She explains that the animals in this exhibit didn’t do well with animals of their own species—for a variety of reasons—but they get along great with each other. After opening in 2014, African Savannah has quickly become a fan favorite, and currently features 20 animals of 10 different species. “When we introduce new animals to this exhibit, we’re always a little nervous about how they’ll react,” Gorsuch explains. “But they

four. M A N AT E E SPRINGS Zookeeper: Winton Ray

Perhaps the most surprising visit on our tour was at Manatee Springs, where we learned about the Zoo’s partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Manatee

Rescue

&

Rehabilitation

Partnership. Rescued off the Florida coast, these manatees are injured by human activities and wouldn’t survive if not rescued. They require long-term care, typically two years, before they can successfully return to the wild. To date, the Zoo has rehabilitated and released 12 manatees. Visitors this summer will likely meet four manatees, including the newest resident, Daphne, who was rescued in April. While they’re rehabilitating, the manatees eat aquatic plants three times a day and work hard to recover from their injuries. “There are about 6,000 manatees in Florida,” Ray explains. “Human activities have a tremendous impact. This is like a second chance program. We’re giving them a second chance at life.”

ARTIST’S PALETTE

Lead Designer and Artist: Paul Loehle Mural unveiled in 2017 15 N. B Street, Hamilton Mural painting requires math in addition to artistic talent because translating sketches and plans to a whole wall means creating grids that perfectly transfer proportions of the design. Especially stunning is the 3-D impact of the pitcher reaching out with a baseball in hand. Nuxhall’s pride in his upbringing and his passion for baseball make him a key figure in Hamilton, where some of his family members still call home.

DIY (CON TI N UED)

Once you’ve bowled a 300 or screamed “Yahtzee!” from the rooftops, help your guests cool off—both from the heat and some intense competition. Lemonade, the resident summer drink cooler, is even better in frozen form. Try this tart, creamy concoction combined with Jell-O—the food that makes anything a little bit more fun—and hit it out of the park with these after-party treats.

Other fruity flavors to try: + Cherry lemonade

PRO TIP: Punch the popsicle stick through a cupcake liner to catch those messy drips!

+ Peach + Pineapple + Lime

FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (they’ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4. Fill the popsicle molds about halfway with Jell-O cubes, then fill the remaining space with the blended lemonade mixture. 5. Add popsicle sticks if needed and freeze overnight.
