ACRES OF WOODED TRAILS AND WILDLIFE JUST A DRIVE AWAY

THE RAINY MONTHS ARE ALMOST Skipping stones under the iconic red covered bridge.

BEHIND US WITH SUMMER PEEKING AROUND THE CORNER. If warm weather makes you want to kick off your shoes, smell the fresh air and fully immerse yourself in nature, then you’ll want to make the short trek up to Oxford, Ohio this season. About 40 minutes outside of West Chester, tucked just around the corner from Miami University, lies a luscious and expansive haven for campers and nature enthusiasts alike. Hueston Woods in Oxford boasts nearly 3,000 acres of natural resources for camping, hiking, fishing, archery, canoeing, sailing, disc golf, a dog park, hunting and fossil collecting. It even has a 27-hole golf course. Perhaps the best perk is the free admission to this state park. The forest is expansive, thick and home to looming beech and sugar maple trees. While much of Ohio’s original forestry has been cultivated, one unique portion of primeval wood remains at Hueston Woods today. Visitors can glance at the approximately 200 virgin acres of the park that have been protected and stand the test of time. Hueston Woods is home to 150 native bird species (including a handful of bald eagles), and an abundance of ancient marine wildlife fossils that attract avid collectors from all over the world. The park’s 12 hiking trails range in difficulty and length. The Sycamore Trail is the easiest at 0.8 miles long. Most of the hiking trails are moderate in difficulty and range from 0.7 miles to 2.2 miles long. The Sugar Brush Trail is unique, as it includes a half mile that’s handicap accessible. Hueston Woods also boasts long-distance trails. The Bridge Trail is a scenic 18 miles, and the Mountain Bike Trail is 20 miles in length and ranges from easy to difficult. Races are even held throughout the season on the Mountain Bike Trail. Camping is a huge draw to the park, and there are nearly 400 campsites, including equestrian camp areas and 228 campsites that are housed with electrical outlets. Other features include showers, flush toilets, CONTINUED >

fire pits, free Wi-Fi access available to registered campers, large and small group camp areas and the ability to bring your pets. The camping area sits close to the Nature Center, which boasts unique educational exhibits, as well as the full-service marina. You can rent kayaks and canoes inexpensively by the hour and explore the clean, gorgeous and serene lake. If roughing it in the elements isn’t your cup of tea, guests can rent cabins, a luxury yurt for a unique getaway or even stay in one of the 92 rooms at the Hueston Woods Lodge & Conference Center, which overlooks Acton Lake. Hueston Woods has something for everyone—from boating to bird watching to hiking and more. Visitors should plan to spend at least several hours exploring if going on a day trip, and adventurers can spend at least a night away. Do yourself a favor and plan a getaway to this hidden gem and leave life’s daily chaos behind. Watch the sun rise over the sparkling lake, visit the beautiful covered bridge, and breathe in the fresh air. Take a minute, and escape.

Coming Up Roses ARTICLE TERA MICHELSON PHOTOGRAPHY ERIC THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY

GRAPEVINE GARDEN CLUB DIGS IN TO POST OFFICE PROJECT AT THE WEST CHESTER POST OFFICE, IT’S COMING UP ROSES… AND DAISIES AND CREEPING PHLOX AND HYDRANGEAS. The blooming flower beds of the Post Office are in the gifted hands of the Grapevine Garden Club of West Chester, which has adopted the space at 8730 Cincinnati-Dayton Road as its ongoing gardening project and gift to the community. Grapevine Garden Club started the post office project in 2013, starting with the less than glamorous job of tearing out the overgrown shrubs and weeds that filled the beds framing its entrance. “The whole front was a lot of very overgrown burning bush that had probably been there since the post office was built,” explains Donna Ferguson, Master Gardener and Project Director of the West Chester Post Office Garden Project, speaking on behalf of the Grapevine Garden Club. Ferguson, a long-time resident of West Chester, uses her skills as a Master Gardener to design and plant the patriotic red-white-andblue garden. “Basically, what influences the garden design at the post office are the conditions,” Ferguson says. “We’ve got to use plants that are drought-tolerant and can handle the full shade in the morning and glaring sun all afternoon. Watering it is not easy.” The Grapevine Garden Club’s volunteers face the same challenges as any gardener in our neck of the woods: rocky soil, a narrow space and dry conditions.

COMING UP ROSES

(CON TI N U ED)

“Evergreeens are what you call bones of the garden,” Ferguson says, “so we started with two vertical junipers. Then we planted the roses—red and white knockout roses—and the blue salvia.” It has been a process, figuring out what works in the soil and weather, sometimes by trial and error. Ferguson says the Garden Club volunteers have had much success with a variety of native plants, which are hearty and drought-tolerant—perfect for southwestern Ohio’s unpredictable weather patterns. Each season brings new red-white-and-blue blooms with a background of evergreens and ground cover. This spring, watch the Post Office beds for the early blooms of blue and white hyacinths and red tulips. More red-tipped tulips will follow later in spring, edged with some blue creeping phlox and bookended by the white blooms of little lamb hydrangeas. During the summer, Becky shasta daisies flourish under each bay window in front of the post office, mixed with some red echinacea, commonly known as coneflowers, and blue stokesia. Ferguson says the Grapevine Garden Club struggles to keep the patriotic color scheme going in the fall. “By the time we are rolling into September and October, you can expect to see fall colors—yellows and oranges—mums, mostly.” The entire project is funded by the Grapevine Garden Club. “Some of the plants come from our own yards,” Ferguson explains. “The Becky daisies were all dug out of other members’ yards. The hellebores and creeping phlox came out of my garden.” Club members do all of this hard work for the love of the garden and the community. “I have been surprised at the joy it has brought to people,” Ferguson adds. “It’s a bright spot in some people’s days. It’s something pretty to look at when you’ve got to go do business there. Some people just walk by fast, but others stop to comment on the improvement, say thank you or ask questions about the plants.” Ferguson projects that the Grapevine Garden Club has some years of work ahead of them yet. “Any garden is an ongoing project,” nods Ferguson. “Always.” The Grapevine Garden Club meets in West Chester for monthly meetings, March through December. Programming includes lectures, garden tours and community projects. No gardening knowledge or previous experience is necessary to be a member. Follow the Grapevine Garden Club on Facebook: Facebook.com/GrapevineGC/.

MIDPOINTE LIBRARY ROLLS BACK TO A LIBRARY ON WHEELS THERE ARE DAYS WHEN THE THOUGHT OF LEAVING HOME TO GET A BOOK MAY SEEM LIKE A LONG TREK; FOR SOME PEOPLE, TRANSPORTATION CHALLENGES MAKE SUCH A JOURNEY NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. However, the library can now come to you in the recently unveiled new bookmobile. “We’re growing our outreach department, what we now call Library On

Wheels,” says Cari Hillman, Public Relations Manager for MidPointe Library. “We are really passionate about getting library materials to those who don’t

when MidPointe received a Library Services and Technology Act grant to partially fund the new program. “Patrons are feeling nostalgic,” says Sandy Little, Content Specialist at MidPointe Library. “I remember exactly where the bookmobile parked when it came to my elementary school in Middletown. This is the first time in 30 years that patrons have that same feeling.” The new 30-foot bookmobile is equipped with free Wi-Fi, as well as about 3,000 books, DVDs and magazines. Readers of any age can get a library card and borrow materials. “Sometimes the bulk of an entire collection gets checked out during visits to schools,” Little says. “But that is a good problem to have since it means that thousands of books are in the hands of children!” MidPointe’s bookmobile also visits parks, senior living communities and other hubs in the Butler County service area. The schedule, which is posted on social media, at branches, and at bookmobile stops, is structured so that people can also return books on the bookmobile the next time it stops in their area. “We know that if you are a mom with three kids, it can be hard to pack everyone up and get to the library,” Hillman says. “Having a library event at the park down the street makes it so much more accessible.” The bookmobile is a way to take some of the library’s programming to a larger audience. It will host story times, movie nights using the speaker system and projector, and other summer reading initiatives. This summer, the Faith Alliance of West Chester and Liberty will work closely with the MidPointe bookmobile on a summer literacy program, which helps bridge the reading gap between summer months. Their students will have access to the bookmobile,  giving the Faith Alliance program a larger collection of diverse books. Library On Wheels Manager Zach Roberts sees the work they do as both rewarding and innovative in a new era of libraries. “Nine out of 10 kids we saw at first didn’t have a library card, and for a huge percentage, it’s the first time borrowing from a library,” Roberts says. “We are starting to see the second or third visit to some of these schools. We are changing the way libraries are, and going out into the community will be the way libraries are in the future."
