YOUR WORKOUT SHOULD MEET YOUR NEEDS People exercise for different reasons: to lose weight, strengthen weaker muscles, cross train. So be sure what you’re doing is benefiting your end-goal. The benefits of indoor cycling are mounting. Its low impact makes it a great option for those recovering from injuries. A class can keep your heart rate well within a vigorous range for approximately 45-60 minutes, checking cardio off your list. Add a body bar during segments of the class to target upper body muscles for a more fullbody workout.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT WHO CAN SAY THEY’VE RUN A MARATHON ON EVERY CONTINENT AND IN ALL SIX MAJOR WORLD MARATHONS? Jim Glendon of West Chester can. And he didn’t start until his late forties. Glendon, 69, is one of only 60 people in the

world to hold both esteemed medals for these racing groups. He completed the six Abbott World Marathon Majors and is a member of the Seven Continents Marathon Club. And he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. “[Finishing] is a great sense of accomplishment, depending upon how well you run,” Glendon says. “You’re elated with your time or disappointed, exhausted, and for some people it’s ‘I’ll never do this again.’ But I’ve never had that feeling. [I say] ‘Okay, what’s next?’” Glendon’s

perpetual

goal-setting

is

exactly what has taken him so far in the running world, especially given the fact that he didn’t start running until he was 49. Inspired by his brother, John Glendon, Jim ran his first marathon in 1997. Now, he’s completed 34 marathons and three ultramarathons. “It’s amazing that he started something like this so late in life and became so good at it,” says daughter-in-law Shannon Glendon. “It appears effortless. But knowing that he gets up early every day and trains, goes to the track and works on speed work…he deserves anything he puts his mind to.” Training is key, and even the world’s best athletes face challenges regardless of training time. While Jim was running his first 50-mile ultramarathon in Key West, Florida, he passed out at mile 25 due to the extreme heat and ended up in the emergency room. Though an event like this would deter many, Jim persevered. He went on to complete two more ultramarathons, one that was 100 miles long. Ultramarathons are grueling and notoriously dangerous races that a participant has to complete in less than a day. Thanks to Jim’s inspirational but humble nature, he’s motivated multiple generations Jim and his sister, Mary Kay, run side by side in a Sydney, Australia marathon. 22

of his family to run. The Glendon family has traveled to most major marathon destinations with Jim, some even running alongside him.

1.

In 2013, Jim and brother John traveled to Boston to run the Boston Marathon together. It was a marathon they would never forget, when terrorists detonated two bombs at the finish line. Jim recalls the terrifying moment he realized it was a bomb, and says his wife was supposed to be waiting for him at the finish line. However, she decided to stay at the hotel that day. “Next thing you know there’s police everywhere, a SWAT team, helicopters,” Jim says. From there, it was chaos. “I remember calculating the time and thinking he was at the finish line when it happened,” Shannon says. “And at first, [the family] couldn’t get a hold of him.” Two minutes behind his typical pace, Jim gratefully avoided the finish line at the Boston Marathon. The horrifying experience only encouraged Jim to keep running. He has taken on the six World Major Marathons— Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City—and then joined the elite Seven Continents Club. As the name describes, this prestigious club is achieved only by those who have completed a marathon on every continent. Jim checked the final continent off his list in 2015, when he and sister Mary Kay found out they were accepted to run a marathon in Antarctica. Two flights and a two-anda-half-day boat ride later, they joined 98 other runners on the coldest continent. “What’s Antarctica like? It’s 25 degrees and windy, snowy, hilly, muddy and wet the whole time,” Jim explains. And that’s not just during the race. In order to be at the start line, Jim says, “You get off the ship, you go to shore,

step off into icy water, climb up the hill, take your cold gear off, and you run a marathon.” Then repeat—in order to get home. “Jim is one of the most meaningful men in my life,” Shannon says. “He’s fast…[He] pushed me to finish my marathon when I stopped at mile 20 and thought I couldn’t do it. After accomplishing so much, what could be possibly want to pursue next? Jim, who placed ninth in the Senior Olympics at the national level, now wants to place in the top three in the Senior Olympics. After that, who knows? But knowing Jim, he will probably say, “What’s next?”

1. Jim Glendon crosses the finish line in Antarctica.

“IT’S AMAZING THAT HE STARTED SOMETHING SO LATE IN LIFE AND BECAME SO GOOD AT IT.”

2. Jim Glendon's medal for completing the Abbott World Marathon Majors. He is one of only 60 people in the world to hold both the Abbott medal and the Seven Continents medal. 3. Jim Glendon is a member of the elite Seven Continents Club, earned by completing a marathon on every continent. January 2018 | West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle

Patients choose between the options available, be it a full body scan like McCormack chose, or a more focused scan that focuses on the upper or lower part of the body. While many insurances do not cover medical thermography, it is a qualifying expense for FSA and HSA accounts, so saving up for a scan can be done with small deposits into these accounts. Most normal scans will receive a recommendation of returning in 12 months to establish a baseline; scans with areas of concern may receive a recommendation of a second scan in three to six months to monitor for change. McCormack’s journey through breast cancer was difficult, but the ability to pinpoint an area of concern allowed her doctors to proceed decisively with treatment, leading her back to a cancer-free and healthy life. “I’m like a walking thermography billboard now,” McCormack laughs. “It’s a way of taking care of your body without hurting it, and making sure that everything is okay.”

SELVES REEVALUATING OUR LIVES AND SETTING GOALS FOR THE FUTURE. Lose weight. Save money. Get out of debt. Eat healthier. While the goals may vary, most strive for a healthier, happier, more confident self in the new year. Dr. Suresh Gupta of Pure MD Medspa helps patients build their self-confidence and body image no matter the time of year. Gupta, who started Pure MD in Beavercreek five years ago, recently opened a second location at Liberty Center, offering non-invasive aesthetic services using the latest medical technologies. When clients walk out of his office, he wants them to feel a newfound sense of confidence and a positive body image. Gupta shares five of the most popular beauty trends for 2018. 1. SMARTLIPO Simply put, SmartLipo removes the unwanted fat—be it on the stomach, thighs or those pesky love handles. Using an extremely small tube with a laser fiber, this outpatient treatment takes about 30-45 minutes. Traditional liposuction is often done under general anesthesia and loose skin remains where fat is taken out. However, over the course of six to eight weeks, SmartLipo causes the skin to tighten and shrink gradually. Gupta and his medical partner, Dr. Keith Perrine, have performed more than 3,000 lipo procedures. Before he’ll operate on someone, Gupta says he has a face-to-face meeting with his clients, making sure they’ll promise to eat right, exercise and continue to get in shape for the rest of their lives. “[I tell them] ‘I don’t want to see you back in my office in five years,’” Gupta says. “I have really open and frank discussions with people so their procedure isn’t wasted.”

N E W Y O U

2. FAT TRANSFER After a patient receives SmartLipo, Gupta says many will have their fat transferred to a more desirable part of the body—face, hands, breasts or buttocks. A fat transfer procedure is a safe, long-lasting procedure that produces natural-looking results. 3. FACIAL REJUVENATION Over time, sun damage and the body’s natural aging process cause skin to have sun spots, fine lines and lose its natural, healthy glow. Facial rejuvenation procedures can correct brown spots, red spots and wrinkles, all in about a half hour. Gupta uses the Halo laser to resurface the face and neck. Halo lasers are color-specific, carefully selected to match each patient’s skin tone. Gupta is one of the few doctors in the area who specializes in darker skin colors. For a facial rejuvenation, patients will need about three to five treatments, each taking just 15-30 minutes. Clients may opt for a topical anesthetic, but after treatment the pain is minimal to non-existent. 4. ACNE TREATMENT Gupta and his team use therapeutic acne treatment to completely remove inflamed acne. “Everyone gets acne, but as we age it can be very embarrassing to continue to show acne spots,” Gupta says. Through laser treatment, Gupta says the results are life-changing. He recommends two treatments initially, plus one “maintenance treatment” each year to brush up. 5. LASER TATTOO REMOVAL Pure MD also specializes in state-of-the-art laser tattoo removal, treating tattoos of all colors, inks, sizes and shapes. Typically a patient will receive a treatment at six to seven week intervals to allow for adequate healing time. Depending on the tattoo, it can usually take 10 treatments to completely eradicate the tattoo. No matter the procedure, Gupta says he wants all of his patients to feel more confident and to live their best lives after he treats them. These are just a few of more than a dozen services offered at Pure MD at Liberty Center. “I want people to feel absolutely marvelous,” Gupta smiles. “And they do. Patients aren’t walking on the ground anymore, they are absolutely flying.”

1 cup grated raw cauliflower

+

1/2 tsp. parsley

1/2 tsp. basil

+

1/2 tsp. dill

Place about 1 tbsp. of mixture on prepared baking sheet, about 1 apart and press down gently. 5. Bake at 450 degrees for 5-7 minutes. 6. Remove from oven and turn cauliflower chips over. GIVING BACK

HOOPS FROM THE HEART FREE THROWS FOR KIDS SCORES BIG FOR LOCAL YOUTH

A team at the 2017 Free Throws for Kids event looks good as they await the games to begin.

ARTICLE TERA MICHELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED POINTS DON’T MATTER FOR FREE THROWS FOR KIDS. The only point is to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of kids and families at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Each April since 2014, teams gather to shoot free throws, raise money and have a lot of fun. Local husband and wife team, Mark and Sarah Johnston, started the ball rolling on this popular event. The Johnstons are motivated to give back to our community, where they live, work and raise their two young boys. “I wanted to do something in my community,” Mark explains. “I wanted it to be unique. I absolutely love basketball—I always have. I figured everybody can shoot free throws.” What started with a goal for 10 teams to raise $10,000, has brought in more than $400,000 to date. Free Throws for Kids uses the money to provide 800 Care Packages to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Each package includes fuel gift cards, food gift cards and other special items for the patients. In 2015, Free Throws for Kids purchased a commercial-grade salad bar for Ronald McDonald House and now covers the expenses to fill it with enough fresh vegetables to feed 80 families per day all year long. Much of the success of the event is due to community support and corporate sponsorships. “We have an incredible sponsorship from White Castle,” Mark says.

The fifth annual Free Throws for Kids is coming Saturday, April 7, at Lakota West High School. Three sessions allow for up to 72 teams this year. Teams of 4-10 friends, family or colleagues fundraise toward a team goal of $1,250. All ages of participants are welcome. The only qualification is that players are able to shoot to score—even granny-style counts. Each team works together to shoot 500 free throws. “Skill level doesn’t matter,” Mark explains. “It’s about the kids. In the end, it doesn’t really matter whether the team makes 100 or 500 of their shots,” he says. Spectators are welcome to this carnival-like day, complete with popcorn, cotton candy, music and more than 36,000 free throws. Mark is thoughtful as he reflects on the positive impacts of Free Throws for Kids. “Our goal with all of this was to show God’s love in a very

2018! Happy New Year From PureMD Medspa

START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW YOU! Fat Transfer from PureMD Medspa For many people wanting to slim down or reduce certain areas but enhance others, fat transfer is an excellent option. During this procedure, fat is taken from areas of your body with excess or unwanted fat and re-injected into other areas (such as the cheeks, breasts or buttocks) to add fullness and smooth out sagging and wrinkles. Fat transfer procedures are a popular alternative to traditional implants and augmentation, with the dual benefits of little downtime and the elimination of many risks associated with implants such as allergic reactions, leaks or ruptures. Because fat transfers are done with material from your own body, they are performed in conjunction with a liposuction. With our minimally-invasive SmartLipo procedure you’ll benefit from slimming and contouring areas of your body with excess fat cells. Extracted fat is saved and purified before being reintroduced to the body in the areas you’ve previously identified to increase size and firmness. It’s a safe, natural way to achieve long-lasting results without resorting to expensive fillers or other synthetic options. To learn more about how a Fat Transfer from PureMD could benefit you, give us a call to schedule a FREE consultation! You’ll be on your way to a brand new you in the New Year!

PARTING THOUGHTS

TRAINER CONFESSIONS WHAT THEY MIGHT NOT TELL YOU IN YOUR WORKOUT ARTICLE ABBEY MCMAHON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED EVEN THE BEST OF THE BEST HAVE A FEW VICES. Local trainers have stepped up to the plate to share their "confessions," proving that even the experts sneak a cheat meal once in a while.

“As a trainer I spend a lot of time helping others work out but sometimes that means my own fitness gets put on the back burner. I may know what to do for my own work out, but sometimes I like to take a class and not have to think or prepare ahead of time, just show up and enjoy a workout!”

“As a former Marine, my motto has always been to lead by example. Clients respond to those who not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. I love it when my clients and riders tell me that I’m killing them. I kindly remind them that I’m certified in CPR and more than qualified to bring them back from the dead if need be.”

“Although I am very passionate about eating a healthy and wholesome diet, I do have a favorite cheat meal and that is poutine. Poutine is a Canadian classic that consists of french fries, melted cheese curds and gravy, all on one delicious plate. Lucky for me, the best poutine is found in Canada so I only eat it when I go home to visit!” – BREANNE LAPRADE
