Lifestyle Letter

Let Us Entertain You.

I

have a deep-rooted love for the arts, which is why our annual Arts & Entertainment edition of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle is my favorite issue of the year. This month we celebrate many of the wonderful artists and entertainment opportunities in and around our community.

Growing up, I always wished that I could be an amazing pianist, painter or dancer. Instead I channeled my love for the arts into singing and musical theater. It brought me tremendous joy this summer when my sons both decided to audition for the musical Peter Pan Jr. through a fantastic local program called Performing Arts Inc. How fitting that they were cast as Wendy’s little brothers—Michael and John Darling. If the director needs them to fight on cue, that’s a scene they’ve been rehearsing for their entire lives! I’m elated to see my children embracing and expressing their own love for the performing arts. No matter your age, it’s never too early or late to express yourself through the arts. West Chester & Liberty townships are full of talented performing artists. Inside this issue you’ll meet Brent and Erica Maez, a singing and songwriting couple who were considered for three 2017 Grammy Award nominations. Lakota East graduate David Baur shares his journey from West Chester to the national stage. We also get to know Patsy Rabinowitz, a talented musician who brings music, dance, theater and gymnastics to thousands of local students every year at her booming studio, West Chester Academy. This month you can read about Liberty Township resident Sherry Armstead. She has an eye for finding unique items from U.S.-based artists and craftsmen to fill her two shops—Art On Symmes in Fairfield and Art Off Symmes in Hamilton. We can’t forget about the “entertainment” part of our Arts & Entertainment issue. Inside we unveil the show-stopping Broadway shows that will be traveling to Cincinnati this year, and we also take you inside one of the area’s hot new entertainment venues: Swing 365. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this artful issue of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle. Sit back, relax, and let us entertain you. SWING ON IN NEW GOLF SIMULATOR AND RESTAURANT READY FOR THE PROS (AND BEGINNERS)

ARTICLE ABBEY MCMAHON PHOTOGRAPHY LEN KALTMAN-WEST CHESTER CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY

I

f you’re a frequent golfer, walk in to Swing 365 in West Chester and you’ll feel right at home. Its modern, accurate and consistent rooms and golf simulators are some of the best in the nation. If you’re a beginner, walk in to Swing 365 and you’ll also feel a sense of belonging, greeted with a warm smile and welcoming attitude. Its spacious lounge areas, restaurant, bar and golf simulators are equally ready for a pro and a novice. When Joe and Lauren Walker set out to create Swing 365, an indoor facility offering 10 high definition golf simulators, they aimed to make it feel like an upscale golf experience, without being pretentious or overwhelming for newbies. It’s the perfect setting for golf pros, corporate outings and families alike. As a former football coach and golf strength coach, Joe spent most of the past two decades training and coaching young men to be the best that they can be—both on and off the field. An offer from Tommy Tuberville to join the Bearcats’ coaching team led him, Lauren and their three young boys to move to Cincinnati in 2013. Joe loved coaching, but the 100-hour work weeks were wearing on him and his family. With their middle child having special needs, Joe and Lauren made the decision to leave coaching and start a business. “I miss my players. I loved making sure they were all better people when they left, but the flip side is now I’m spending time with and teaching my own kids,” Joe reflects. In January 2017, Joe and Lauren opened Swing 365 near Union Centre, offering the first indoor golf simulator in Cincinnati and tying for the largest in the nation. In addition to the 10 HD golf simulators, which feature more than 30 famous courses, including Pebble Beach, St. Andrews and more, Swing 365 offers lessons, clinics and leagues. Its simulators provide accuracy within a yard.

“Besides the grass, it’s actually more efficient to swing with a simulator than to go to a range,” Joe explains. “This is the closest thing you can get to real golf. You will have a much better range session here. Our goal is to provide both a superior customer experience and tremendous value for our customers.” In addition to the golf, Swing 365 serves up a full restaurant and bar that offers the same accurate service as the 10 golf bays. When customers walk in, Joe wants them to say, “Wow, I did not expect this!” “I want them to feel welcome, to come here and know that they are wanted, not just their money,” Joe says. “We want to get to know them personally.” It’s Joe’s passion for golf as a hobby that led the married duo to settle on Swing 365, a name developed with the help of Joe’s brother. While Joe manages the operations side of the business, Lauren oversees the financials and design. An accounting major, Lauren is “the brains of the operation,” according to her husband. When you walk into the facility, your eyes are immediately drawn to the exceptionally-crafted wood hangings on the walls and wooden tables and shelves that sit throughout. Lauren’s woodworking skills helped create a unique environment for their West Chester business. “Woodworking is something I have enjoyed for the past few years, just learning on my own and trying things out,” Lauren says. “Thankfully, Joe indulges my ideas and hobby.” Swing 365 offers six private bays and four open bays, so regardless if you like social interaction or a quiet setting to focus on your game, they have you covered. Bays are rented by the hour, with the private bays renting at $45 per hour and the open bays for $30 per hour. Even if you have never swung a golf club before, don’t let that slow you down. The professionals at Swing 365 are ready to help you learn. August 2017 | West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle

A SUPER SCHOOL YEAR AHEAD GETTING TO KNOW LAKOTA'S NEW SUPERINTENDENT MATT MILLER ARTICLE SHAWNA TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

eet Lakota's new superintendent: Matt Miller. A Cincinnati native who graduated from St. Xavier High School and the University of Cincinnati, Miller offers a well-developed line of experience. He served five years as a teacher in Oak Hills Local School District before moving to central Ohio and spending 13 years with Celina City Schools—five years as principal, one year as director of student services and instruction  and seven years as superintendent. He most recently held a five-year tenure as superintendent of Mentor Public Schools, located east of Cleveland. Now, his new role at Lakota brings him full circle and back to his hometown. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN A CAREER IN EDUCATION?

When I was in seventh grade I had a teacher named Mr. Carol who was the template for what I wanted to do for kids. Teaching was a natural progression. My first paying job in education was as an aide to a student with autism. I’ve been fortunate enough to do a lot of different things. It’s cool to have one-on-one time with students. Being in this seat, it’s something that I miss, but I still do it as much as I can. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO LAKOTA?

Lakota’s reputation in Ohio is very positive. I see the [large] size of the district as an advantage because it just means there are a lot of opportunities for the kids. We are doing a lot of great things, @LakotaSuper

24

Lakota Superintendent Matt Miller.

but I think there’s an opportunity to keep moving forward. There’s work to be done in conjunction with teachers, staff and the community; it’s not just me, it’s a group effort. I know I probably have at least a good 15 years left in education and there would be nothing better than finishing it up here. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE?

The first six to eight months are going to be a lot of me asking questions. I’m not going to come in and make a bunch of quick changes. I want to learn more about the community and what our kids are involved with. I’m hoping that in time we can start making strides to give kids even more opportunities to prepare for life after graduation. Digital curriculum and technology are fast-paced in our industry, so there’s always progress we can be making there. I want to have conversations with our kids, because that’s an important piece. I want to hear what the kids have to say and what they think about their experience. I want people to know that I want to listen. I want to build relationships and in the initial phase I may be out front more, but I really want the focus to be on what the students and teachers are doing. Superintendent Miller is also making strides in integrating social media and education. To learn more about him and to keep up with all of the progress at Lakota, follow him on Twitter at @LakotaSuper and on Facebook at Facebook.com/LakotaSuper.

Lakota Grad David Baur In The National Spotlight ARTICLE MARIA EILERS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Big Dreams On The Big Stage 28

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | August 2017

I

t has been seven years since David Baur left West Chester for New York City to pursue a career in theater. Since then, the Lakota East graduate has gone on to perform in some of the most well-known shows and musicals to ever grace the stage, including Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz, and countless others. However, there’s more than just Broadway fame on the mind of this West Chester native. It wasn’t always about theater for Baur. His childhood activities gave him a solid foundation for performing. “My interests as a child centered around whatever my sisters were into. I got involved because I was dragged to whatever they were doing,” Baur laughs.

David Baur (third from right) performs in Hello Dolly starring Karen Ziemba at Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago in 2013. This included everything from tap dance classes to competitive gymnastics, which was his first true passion. Beginning at just nine years old, Baur took gymnastics lessons at Kristi’s Tumbling & Trampoline across from Lakota East. By the time he reached high school, Baur was ready to explore his inner performer even more. That’s when he found theater. During his junior year, Baur was cast in Lakota East’s performance of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and was bit by the theater bug. As a senior, being part of the quartet in The Music Man solidified his love for theater and gave him the confidence to pursue theater as a career.

After graduating in 2005, Baur attended Wright State University as a Theater Studies major and performed in Annie Get Your Gun, Grease, Aida and West Side Story. “I always enjoyed the more creative and athletic side of education,” Baur explains. “I felt such a boost in confidence being on stage. I knew I wanted to follow this same direction after college.” After graduating in 2009, Baur performed on a cruise line and then headed to New York in 2010 to find his spot on the big stage. Baur has built quite the resume, having acted and danced off-Broadway in both national and regional tours, including the National tour of Beauty and the Beast, where he played the tumbling carpet and understudied Lefou. He also performed on the regional tours of The Wizard of Oz and White Christmas. Since arriving in The Big Apple, Baur’s had the opportunity to work with Tony Award®-winners like Karen Ziemba (who won Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 2000 for her performance in Contact) when they performed together in Hello Dolly at the Drury Theater in Chicago. Even more impressive than all this success is Baur’s resolve to stay humble and give back. “There is a strength in kindness and easygoingness that I learned growing up in the Midwest which sets me apart from a lot of other people trying to make it in this business,” Baur reflects. Baur gives credit to his family and upbringing for helping him stay grounded, but this hasn’t wavered his confidence. “We tend to shy away from things that we are good at, trying to be modest, but now is my time and I’ve come to own it,” Baur says. He credits the drive to give back to those in need as a major proponent for his success in a current project: Broadway Bares, a burlesque style dance-focused show that’s raising money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS charity. Baur has helped raise more than $3,000 and his group and recent performances at the Hammerstein ballroom in Manhattan have raised more than $1.5 million. Baur reflects, “It was an empowering moment realizing that doing what I love also gives me the ability to help so many others.”

Cast of the off-Broadway national tour of The Wizard of Oz. Baur starred as the Yellow Brick Road (center).

Up next for this rising star is possibly working as a stunt double. Baur says he wants to tap into his gymnastics background in order to break into the stunt business. “My dream would be to do some sort of trampoline jump or f lip, f lying over a car in an action scene for TV or a commercial,” Baur says. So whether it’s theater or stunts, the adrenaline rush continues for this West Chester native. His advice for others looking to follow a similar path? “Continue to tell yourself that you are enough,” Baur says. “That is especially important in this industry because so many people will tell you ‘no.’”

Concertgoers enjoy live music at last year's inaugural Sing Out Against Poverty Music Festival.

This year's Sing Out Against Poverty Music Festival is Saturday, September 30.

Uniting Through Music And Faith

The Faith Alliance’s college interns, all studying education at local universities, pose with Literacy Advocate Denise Chambers (far right) during their “Bridges out of Poverty” training. A volunteer helps teach students at the Summer Literacy Program.

S

troll through any number of parks or shopping districts in West Chester and Liberty Township during the warmer months and you’re guaranteed to find concerts, bands, stages and fun. Our community certainly loves outdoor entertainment. However, there’s one concert near the end of the season that’s a bit different from the rest: Sing Out Against Poverty. On Saturday, September 30, The Faith Alliance will present its second annual Sing Out Against Poverty Music Festival on the Square @ Union Centre. This free Christian rock festival brings together some of the best Christian music in our area and benefits community members who face issues related to poverty. In its inaugural year last year, The Faith Alliance raised more than $4,000 during the event and expects to shatter that number this year. According to board president and chair of The Faith Alliance programs committee Bonnie Greenwood, Sing Out Against Poverty is sure to entertain the whole family.

34

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | August 2017

Haley Fakes, one of four Faith Alliance college interns, works with a student in the Summer Lunch Literacy Program.

“It is such a neat event,” Greenwood says. “There is great music, lots of activities for the kids and great food. This year we have The Cone’s mobile cone unit coming, too!” Greenwood has been volunteering with The Faith Alliance since its inception in 2011. The Faith Alliance of West Chester and Liberty Township is a network of Christian churches that see value in working side-by-side to serve the needs of our community. They provide a series of services, share resources and participate in local outreach activities, focusing largely on those who face poverty in our community. According to its mission statement, The Faith Alliance’s purpose is “to eliminate poverty in our community and by our actions demonstrate true Christian love.” The organization does this through food drives, summer lunch program, literacy program, backpack ministry and much more. For Sue Mahlock, the organization’s director of outreach, it’s this mission that got her involved in the organization. “I really enjoy helping neighbors who need us. Using the hands and feet of 19 churches and the whole community at large—literally thousands of volunteers—to come together to feed and teach children and families, showing those who are struggling that there is hope, that God cares for them too, is what really drives me,” Mahlock says. “Breaking down the walls between churches’ and our neighbors’ to come together to eliminate poverty is our goal.”

While it’s common to see Christian churches promoting outreach and supporting charities, it’s not so easy to witness so many working together, externally, for one purpose. The Faith Alliance’s vision is to be the organization that coordinates the collaborative external activities of the West Chester/Liberty Township Christian community. “What excites me is the fact that we’re getting all of these churches together, which is totally unusual,” Greenwood says. “Churches generally work within their congregation for missions and outreach. Faith Alliance is not intrusive to their mission, we simply bring added value to local service opportunities. We basically take on the role of hands and feet of Christ together. We’re out there doing the work, looking for opportunities to get people and solutions together.” Although all of the partner churches are Christian, The Faith Alliance has also brought together other organizations and religions for help on various projects, including The Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati. “[The Islamic Center] has always helped us with the food drive, Feed Our Neighbors, which is in the spring,” Greenwood says. It’s this mentality of collaboration and inclusiveness that is the cornerstone to The Faith Alliance organization, and it’s what event attendees will experience at Sing Out Against Poverty on September 30. While the event is free, any donations collected will benefit The Faith Alliance programs. T

he Brent Maez story reads like the lyrics to a classic country song. The catchy tunes on their 2015 extended play (EP) record, Brent Maez, chronicle the fun, love and musical dreams coming true for Brent and Erica Maez, married singer-songwriters of Mason. Erica Maez, a West Chester native, Lakota High School graduate and former Lakota School District teacher, grew up listening to country music. “I’ve lived here my whole life,” Erica says. “I always listened to country growing up—that old, twangy style— Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Bryan White, Tim McGraw, George Strait, guys like that. Until high school, I don’t think I knew that anything but country existed.” Teenaged Brent Maez didn’t even know country music. He started playing shows in his hometown Chicago as a solo artist with his guitar at 16. During college, Brent made musical appearances at private parties, fraternities and benefits. “When I grew up, I didn’t even know there was such a thing called ‘country.’ I was completely oblivious to it,” Brent says. “For me, it all started with James Taylor, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Chicago, the Eagles and Christian rock—a lot of Christian artists…you name it, I love them all.” Fate and a mutual friend brought the two together in 2011 on the set of a local television show, Cincinnality. It was not only the beginning of a beautiful love story, but also combined the skills of the two to form a song-writing duo. Brent enjoys writing the music and together, they collaborate on lyrics. They tweak their tunes to toe-tapping, memorable melodies. “I think we both bring something very important to the table that collectively makes us who we are,” Erica explains. This year, two songs from Brent Maez were on the illustrious GRAMMYs ballot for three awards, just one step from the top honor as finalists. Rocking “Run to You” was on the ballot for the categories of Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. The EP’s sweet closing song, “I Found You,” was recognized in the Best American Roots Performance category. The duo was listed alongside country music superstars like Dolly Parton, Blake Shelton and Carrie Underwood, to name a few.

“It’s kind of like the little person’s GRAMMY to even be on the short list. It’s pretty cool to be on that list. I’m in a good group of losers!” Brent jokes. “I was elated to be on the list for three categories.” In the ever-evolving genre of country music, “Brent Maez” does not tell the typical sad story of broken hearts and lost loves. Instead, the Nashville produced EP celebrates a life of adventure and romance. The songs are a reflection of Brent and Erica’s happiness—personal and relatable. Self-described as fun, alternative country rock, the four Brent Maez tunes hook the listener with catchy rhythms and meaningful lyrics. “TV Show,” the top downloaded and streamed song of the EP, was written on the couples’ honeymoon, inspired by the nearby filming of the popular television reality show, The Bachelor. It light-heartedly highlights “a day in the sun and a night of rum.” “We were running around having ridiculous amounts of fun on our honeymoon, and we thought, ‘Our lives could be a TV show!’” Brent explains. While they enjoy the red carpet life, the Mason performers are committed to their community, playing at benefits and fundraisers like The Community Foundation of West Chester/ Liberty’s Shamrock Shuffle and The Key Event, as well as private parties. They are crowd-pleasers, playing covers of popular party favorites and writing witty on-the-spot songs about the happenings of the moment. “We like to do things that impact the community. Personally, we are very involved with local charities that benefit families in need, such as the Angel Fund,” Erica says. “We like to try to use our music to help people or bring awareness to things, if we can,” Brent adds. There’s more music to come from our talented neighbors Brent and Erica Maez—the red carCONTINUED > pet is calling.

AN EYE FOR ART

40

West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle | August 2017

A

ARTICLE SHAWNA TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY LEN KALTMANWEST CHESTER CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY

t its very core, art is defined as the expression of creativity and imagination. It’s the creation of works that are to be appreciated for both their beauty and emotional impact. We typically think of art as a picture or a sculpture, but it can be argued that, by definition, people can also become the artwork. Sherry Armstead, at her core, is art personified. Though she is an incredible artistic figure today, Armstead has not always been involved in the creative industry. Throughout her adolescence she stayed true to her family’s passion for sports and dedicated every minute of her free time to training in archery. It wasn’t until she was 15 years old that she found her creative outlet—beauty. A family friend noticed her eye for detail in the preparation of her hair and suggested that she attend beauty school. “I completed my schooling in two years and was working 20 hours a week by my junior year of high school. Because of the archery, I was driving to succeed and hit whatever I aimed for,” she explains.

Armstead’s passion and drive have been the foundation of her life, always leading her to aim high and achieve great success. She later found herself employed as a successful realtor with a Re/Max franchise. It was the events of September 11, 2001 that led her to reimagine her career and set her gaze elsewhere. “That day led me to say, ‘From now on I want to do what makes me feel good and just make art,’” she expresses. “One night I had a vivid dream. The Re/Max sign changed to Art On Symmes and the agent office changed to artist studios.” The rest is history. Armstead, who completely redesigned her Re/Max office to fit the vision from her dream, quit the real estate industry to open Art On Symmes, an eclectic art gallery located on Symmes Road in Fairfield. She describes her galleries as places where visitors are able to purchase unusual and one-of-a-kind pieces of art at affordable prices. The products and pieces that are found within and on the walls make CONTINUED >

the perfect gifts for the hard-to-buy person. The gallery, which also carries apparel, offers personal stylist services to assist with selecting the perfect outfit for vacations and special occasions. While Art On Symmes is filled to the brim with art, the building itself serves as a beautiful fixture with uniquely crafted pieces greeting each guest as they pull into the parking lot. The space is a true testament to Armstead’s vision and to the pieces that can be found inside. Art On Symmes has now expanded to a second location in Hamilton, and sells one hundred percent American-made products such as pottery, blown glass sculptures, metal works, garden art, paintings, wood works, enamel works, jewelry and apparel. This is all made possible through their representation of more than 400 American artists and craftsmen. “Quality over quantity,” Armstead states when reflecting on the products she chooses to house and sell in her gallery. “In the beginning my husband would say, don’t buy anything you’re not willing to bring home. For the most part, that has stuck with me over the past 15 years.” While some of the artists represented by the gallery are local, she also spends time searching for unique pieces around the country. To this day, the transition continually proves to be a natural one fueled by fervor. Whether she’s making it, selling it or viewing it, art feeds Armstead’s soul and gives her an outlet for personal reflection and expression. “It’s a way of expressing inner feelings without saying a word. In our rushing society it is all too common to lose sight of what is really important to us intellectually. I’ve found that if I just follow my interest, my creative process goes beyond my limits and affects others in an inspiring way,” Armstead says. Though she has been very successful since her transition into the art world, Armstead stresses that for her this isn’t a job; it’s a community service. “I’m inspired by the people I meet and the challenge of the hunt for new and different art. It’s rewarding that, for the most part, people like what I choose,” Armstead reflects. “I love that each day is new and different and there’s a new challenge and new people to work with. It’s also great that I am helping educate and inspire others.” ArtOnSymmes.com

West Chester Academy LEARNING THE NOTES OF PATSY RABINOWITZ ARTICLE ABBEY MCMAHON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

ince opening West Chester Academy (WCA) 10 years ago, Patsy and Paul Rabinowitz have grown to a team of more than 50 musicians, dancers, actors, gymnasts and support staff whose primary focus is to give back to the next generation of musicians and artists. West Chester Academy specializes in beginners of all ages and offers training through pre-professional levels. We spoke with Patsy, who is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati of the College Conservatory, to learn more about her love of music and the arts.

“West Chester Academy consumes most of my time as well as that of my husband, Paul. We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to work side by side in a business that we are passionate about. It is a labor of love for us both.”

“Since childhood, I have loved being a musician. Much like the author of the book Everything I need to know, I learned in Kindergarten, I learned most of my life skills on the piano bench… The gift of music I was given as a young child has opened up amazing doors to me and shaped my life in profound ways.” “Paul and I have two grown children, a son-in-law and three grandchildren. Nothing makes us light up like our family! Before being grandparents, we had no idea how fun and rewarding it would be. When not working, traveling or attending church functions, our favorite pastime is doing things with the family.” 50

“WCA is a place where young students are enthusiastically mentored by caring teachers. They are taught more than music, dance or gymnastics. They are taught that the arts are a reflection of life, that in studying the arts, they are learning to be creative, responsible, and happy human beings. They are encouraged to find their passion and are championed along the way.”

“We never dreamed when we moved into our new facility two years ago, that we would have grown to the point that we now need to add on more space. However, our big project this summer is building an addition on to the back of our building. As an architect, Paul's contribution to the business has been the design of the building and the new addition that fundamentally impacts the success of the business.”
