A Season of Giving

A

s we turn the page of this year’s calendar to December, it seems like it was just yesterday we were singing carols, unwrapping gifts and toasting to 2017. Now—as unbelievable as it may seem—it’s time to do it all over again.

Photo: Donna Permell, PrimePhocus.com

The holiday season and the end of the year always bring about a feeling of reflection and a feeling of closure. Whether we’re jumping head first into the spirit of the season, enjoying time with family—no matter if the distance is near or far—or reflecting on the past year while making plans and setting goals for the next, December always has a way of keeping us busy.

While shopping for the perfect gift, prepping the perfect dinner or crafting the perfect toast can all become a little overwhelming, we encourage you to take a deep breath, take a step back and take in all the moments, memories and people that have made 2017 memorable. When you’re reflecting on everything this year has brought, we also encourage you to reflect on those who haven’t had the benefit of people, memories and moments to make 2017 a year to remember. Those who are in need of a family to spend the holidays with, those who can’t afford to buy gifts and prep the perfect dinner, and those who may not even have a home to go back to. Just as much as December is a time of reflection and closure, it is also a time of giving to those who haven’t been as fortunate. It’s a time to find ways to make the holiday season as special as it can be to those who haven’t seen 2017 as very special. Whether it’s volunteering your time at local shelters or donating your money to local charities, giving back to the Vinings community can help make this time of year special for everyone.

Cora Lee Institute Keep the Holidays Happy for Individuals with Autism

The holidays can be stressful for everyone, but for individuals with Autism the over-stimulating noise, lights, and the constant barrage of activity can be devastating. Consider these tips to help keep the “happy” in the holiday season. • Decorating with bright lights and colors can be beautiful, but consider decorating in stages so as not to make sweeping changes all at once. Consider your child’s sensory response to lights and sounds before incorporating into your décor. • Shopping at the holidays can be challenging for most, but for your child with Autism that relies on routine, it can be maddening. If you must take your child with you, be sure to move at their pace and adapt to their needs as the holiday stimuli may put your child into sensory overload and cause them to require a break. • Family routines often change at the holidays. These changes in routine can be annoying and troubling for your child with Autism. Consider using social stories to help your child prepare for meeting with relatives and friends they don’t know well or see often. • Gifts are an invitation for investigation. Devise a strategy to help your child to remember that gifts can’t be opened without you there or wait until the night before to place gifts under the tree. On the day that gifts are opened, use an ornament, or other holiday object, to pass around to indicate whose turn it is to open the next gift. This will help to prevent the chaos of everyone opening things at once and help manage the frustration of your child having to wait his/ her turn. • Play time with new gifts and toys can be difficult for children with Autism. Prepare your child to be willing to share their new toys with other siblings, cousins, and friends, while also helping to remind them not to grab at other children’s toys. If necessary, it may be helpful to give your child a quiet space alone to play with his/her gifts. • The holidays are the busiest time of the year for travel. If you will be traveling by plane, it is helpful to let the airline know that you will be traveling with an individual with Autism. It is also important to prepare your child for the trip and come up with a travel plan, including a special object or sensory device to help him/her feel comfortable during the trip.

“I

love working here at Vinings Health Park. The facility is beautiful, the other doctors are always helpful and the patients are

a joy. Completing my residency at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center made the transition very smooth.” It’s wonderful to live and work here in Vinings. At Family Medicine, I get to care for babies, their parents and grandparents. Vinings Health Park is an incredible benefit to my patients. We’re a team focused on delivering world-class health care. When a patient has a health challenge, I can ask a specialist for a second opinion or check on a patient’s blood work. We work together to ease patient stress. When I’m not at WellStar, it’s rewarding to give free blood pressure screenings with the Minority Health Connection or support community events like AIDS Walk. 4 TIPS FOR HEALTHY HABITS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

1. Keep your body in motion. Exercise right after work while you still have the energy. 2. You can’t eat what you don’t buy. Make smart choices while grocery shopping that you won’t regret later.  3. Don’t eat to be full, eat to be satisfied. We often eat more than we need, especially when we’re celebrating.  4. Recognize your triggers for stress around the holidays. Remain calm and practice breathing techniques to ease your anxiety.

Burgundy is an alternate way to add a bold yet playful color to your party pants (or jeans). A velvet blazer is the perfect way to dress up a pair of jeans or black pants. It’s also a great outerwear option for a black jumpsuit or dress. Make a statement with a red skirt or pair of pants, but let them be the star of the show. t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle, packages, boxes, ribbons and bows, and, of course,

overwhelming, and sometimes we get caught up in it and forget the

stewards of God’s grace. As Dr. Tiffini Billingsly and Dr. Lynn Gardner were seeing patients, they began to notice a recurring pattern, approximately one-third of schoolage children coming in were having difficulty in their academic performance. Research indicates a correlation between health and education;

the more educated you are, the healthier you are. It didn't take long for the two to realize there was a desperate need for children from lower-income families to have opportunities for private tutoring. With no prior nonprofit experience, they began collaborating with friends and successfully launched Exceeding The Mark in July 2012. When asked how the name Exceeding The Mark was chosen, Gardner says, “We were brainstorming one night, basically tossing around names and ideas and one of the phrases was Exceeding The Mark.” Billingsly said, “Stop right there. That’s it—Exceeding The Mark!”

after before

Immediately, they both knew the name was a perfect fit; it would resonate and show kids are capable of more than performing at just the bare minimum. ETM has become a successful nonprofit, serving students by encouraging and supporting them to recognize and cultivate their God-given talents.

“We believe that children are born for greatness and have amazing dreams, and we want to help them realize those dreams," Gardner says. The Tutoring For Success program is based on a sliding scale, ranging from $10 to $25 per hour. The small financial contribution reflects the parent’s commitment to the education of the child. ETM volunteer tutors are career-oriented college students with a dedicated commitment to service and a passion for education. Helena Wiley’s son, Jaden, has been receiving tutoring for math and language arts with ETM for almost three years. His academic performance has “Exceeded The Mark” of average expectations. “Jaden not only has improved his grades, he looks up to his tutor as a mentor and role model. They have a real bond together,” Helena says. "We are very thankful for Exceeding The Mark.” ETM tutors children throughout metro Atlanta.  Charitable contributions can be made through their website, ExceedingTheMark.org. Tiffini Billingsly, M.D., Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is the owner of Premier Pediatric Associates in Smyrna. Lynn Gardner, M.D., Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is the pediatric residency program director at Morehouse School of Medicine.

Should I get my spine checked after a car accident? If your car is damaged, your body is likely damaged. Your body is the weakest link in a collision between 2 cars. The car is a lot stronger than you are. If you see your car is damaged, you need to get checked immediately for whiplash injury or a spinal trauma. The ER is great for life threatening injuries, but many patients suffer long term health effects following a car accident. Our goal after a car accident is first – to correct any spinal misalignment or whiplash that occurred in the accident ... and second – to make sure you have no long term effects. Many people don’t get their spine checked and they heal after an accident, but they heal in a bad spine position that causes major pain and headaches 3-5 years later.
