CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS

THERE ARE A COUPLE OF WEEKS LEFT TO ENJOY FAMILY REUNIONS, VACATIONS, AND ROAD TRIPS. The lazy days of summer are winding down as you check off the activities and places to go... or count the days left of not having homework, school activities and just relaxing. Then somehow there is a whirlwind of activity; new clothes, new teachers, new friends, the wonderment of the new school year and at the end of the month, you look back wondering how you got it all done. Somehow you do and look forward to the new adventures that await you.  Enjoy the best of both worlds and have a great August!

t h e WHAT YOU NEED TO CREATE UNIQUE PLAY AREAS PERFECT FOR YOUR KIDDOS’ UNIQUE INTERESTS ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? It’s a question we were all asked as kids—one that was so innocently answered with whatever our obsession of the week was. Maybe today your child wants to be an astronaut—they love science and math and dream to one day explore among the stars. Maybe they want to be an explorer—they are curious about everything and want to see the world, finding adventure in everything they do. Maybe they want to be a writer—they get lost in a good book and yearn to imagine new stories and characters. Inspire your kids’ imaginations with unique play areas tailored to their wildest dreams. If they can dream it, you can make it with a few simple items.

For over seven years, owner Amy James has been providing quality shoes for children in Tulsa at their location 81st & Harvard in the Walnut Creek Shopping Center. As the upcoming school year approaches, kids are beginning to feel the excitement as a new experience awaits them. Most of us remember that time of year when shopping is actually fun. It’s the one time of year when mom dragging the kids from store to store is actually a fun experience for them. Everyone loves to get a new pair shoes no matter what age we may be. Kicks for Kids is just such a fun place with an inviting atmosphere that keeps that excitement running with children who light up with each new shoe that catches their eye. The store carries a wide variety of shoes including athletic shoes like Nike and New Balance plus dress shoes, cowboy boots, flip-flops, baby shoes and crib shoes among others. She explained that the store carries shoes across the board to fit any needs for children from pre-walkers to youth size seven. Whether one is raising a cowboy, athlete or an infant, Kicks for Kids has the right fit.

“We are a local store in town that specializes in children’s shoes and in how they fit each child,” James said. The store employees measure each child’s feet to ensure that each pair is a custom fit for that child. James also explained that it is important for a child’s shoes to fit right because their

feet are still in the development stages and if they don’t fit properly in the beginning, they can become uncomfortable very quickly. Since brands may be designed slightly different, it is beneficial for the child to have the option of trying on several different shoes to ensure that comfort is achieved before leaving the store, she added. Kicks for Kids always has clearance shoes as well to offer great prices and only sell at the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices to ensure that their prices are the same as any other retail store. In addition, the store carries all the shoes required for private schools. Stop by and find your child’s perfect fit because they have something for every child as back to school season approaches.

LOCAL’S CHOICE

c h i l d re n's b oo ks t o re fa vo ri tes br in g n ew a n i mal fri e n ds t o l i fe ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KELLY BROWN -ELLY PHOTOGRAPHY

WE OFTEN THINK OF THEM AS CHILDHOOD FRIENDS, NOT JUST CHARACTERS IN OUR CHILDHOOD BOOKS: WINNIE THE POOH, CURIOUS GEORGE, CHARLOTTE AND WILBUR. Beloved literary animals, after all, often showed us how to be better people. The 3,000-plus volumes at the Tulsa Toy Depot, 10114 S. Sheridan Road, feature plenty of other great animal heroes to enthrall young readers. Here are some of owner Ryan McAdams’ favorite titles: BABY BEAR SEES BLUE By Ashley Wolff Baby Bear wakes up and spends the day exploring a world of colors: Green leaves, brown trout, red strawberries and blue jays. A bright, colorful board book with beautiful illustrations, for infants to 3-year-olds. BEAR’S LOOSE TOOTH By Karma Wilson; Illustrated by Jane Chapman Bear is eating lunch when he feels a crunch _ his first loose tooth! Bear gets help and reassurance from his animal friends as he deals with a wobbly tooth. McAdams recommends this book for kids ages  1 to 6. It’s an especially great read for those  with a wiggle in their bite. A TALE OF TWO BEASTS By Fiona Roberton Every story has at least two sides, and this one cleverly shows why understanding those different viewpoints matters. The same story is told in two parts, one from the perspective of a little girl who “rescues” a creature in the woods and the other from the creature who is “kidnapped.” An eye-opener of a story book. CHARLOTTE’S WEB By E.B. White; Illustrated by Garth Williams Yes, this is the beloved story of Charlotte and Wilbur, a spider and a pig who find friendship in a barnyard and hatch a plan to save Wilbur’s life. Great for any advanced reader, including adults who will find this tale of love, friendship and sacrifice even more moving than they did as kids. 34
