Good-bye is Never Easy

T

he end of the summer is always a little bittersweet. The days get shorter as shadows grow longer. As the temperature drops sweaters are dug out from closets again. After the last hurrah of the summer – Labor Day weekend – means a return to work and school and making sure the goals for the year are met. Saying goodbye to summer is as certain as pages flipping on a calendar in a breeze that hints of Autumn. Saying goodbye to a family member is also tough. That theme is explored by writer Marissa Plescia, a Lake Barrington resident and University of Illinois journalism student whose work has graced the pages of SW Lake Lifestyle over the last few issues. In “Parting Thoughts,” Marissa bids a fond farewell to a sibling on the move.

Speaking of families, two brothers are continuing the work started by their father in 1950. Over the years generations of area families have entrusted Marquardt Buick GMC with their automotive needs; we meet the brothers, Kurt and Dan Marquardt, who are steering the Barrington dealership on a steady course. Although swimsuits are being packed away this month, we’re very excited to welcome a new contributor to these pages. Sean Lee, owner of Restoration Fitness in Lake Zurich, commences with a series of regular articles designed to inspire us to new levels of well-being. Also debuting this month is a regular feature that looks at area charities. SW Lake Lifestyle is partnering with six local not-for-profits to help get the word out about their good work. Kicking off our series is S.T.A.R. Charities, an organization that raises funds distributed to deserving organizations in our communities. If there’s a little nip in the air when you read this, pull up a blanket and enjoy the transition from Summer to Fall.

STAR Charities ARTICLE MARISSA PLESCIA | PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON

S

TAR Charities is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 2003 by Progressive Components, a

company based in Wauconda that develops and distributes mold components for the production tooling industry worldwide. The STAR acronym stands for “Sharing Time and Resources”, and the organization actively does just that, sponsoring and co-sponsor-

ing a range of special events each year to raise money for worthwhile local organizations and charitable causes in need of support. In recent years STAR has averaged approximately $70K in annual donations to worthy organizations. The charity started as a group of like-minded individuals who all wanted to give back to the community. It is a non-profit, and is completely volunteer-run. As the organization is sponsored by Progressive Components, many of the volunteers are company employees and their family and friends. Don Starkey, co-founder of STAR, shared additional background regarding how they think globally and act locally: “We have always felt a responsibility to be a good citizen in the locales where we reside— 14

STAR raised over $7,000 at this year's Bunny Hop for both Veterans R&R (check presentation shown above) and Wauconda FBLA.

by “giving back” through STAR and also through more diverse and personal ways by providing all employees a couple days per year they can volunteer to serve their community in the way they choose. This goes beyond the Wauconda area; we have employees across the U.S., United Kingdom, Germany, and Singapore doing the same.” Rather than support a single organization or cause, STAR works with several organizations in the area each year. They help provide the “musTurkey Trotting in style.

cle” by organizing events and raising funds in support of other charities, as Erick Robbins, STAR Charities Director, explained. Area organizations are welcome to request their assistance, and STAR

regularly reviews those requests. Often, charities are referred by members of STAR’s volunteer team. STAR likes to stay local and largely focuses on Lake County, but recently has supported organizations such as Pioneer Center in neighboring McHenry County, which received an $11K donation this year from STAR’s annual golf outing. Among other annual fundraisers put on by STAR, two of the largest are the Wauconda Turkey Trot (held each Thanksgiving morning) and Wauconda Bunny Hop (held the Saturday before Easter). Each features a four-mile, professionally-timed run around Bangs Lake in Wauconda paired with a twomile fun-run/walk, with trophies for top finishers in all age groups.  Last year’s Turkey Trot included 930 participants and nearly a hundred volunteers, with proceeds supporting the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry. Registration for this year’s event will be available on Raceroster.com.

A Wauconda Turkey Trot tradition: visiting troops are welcomed & hosted for Thanksgiving dinner.

Additional annual events include the Tee Up 4 Charity golf outing (including 18 holes, lunch and dinner, and a sponsored auction), Shamrock the Block (a St. Patrick’s day fundraiser which this year benefited the Bangs Lake Advisory Group and Main Street Attraction), and a winter dinner featuring a trivia competition and silent auction. Organizations recently supported by STAR include the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Veterans R&R, Partners for Progress, and local school FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) groups. According to Robbins, STAR helps out charities in the area that could use a leg up, and brings a philanthropic spirit to the Wauconda community. “It really makes it come full circle when you get to see what those organizations end up doing with the funds that we donate to them,” Robbins said. ARTICLE SUE SHIMKUS AND KIRSTEN MULLANY

The Passion Play: EVERY TEN YEARS, ONCE IN A LIFETIME

I

n the charming alpine hamlet of Oberammergau, and in faithful accordance with a solemn vow, villagers will once again per-

form The Passion Play in 2020, just as they have every 10 years since 1634. Steeped in history, the event is regarded as the most important passion play in the world. The honored tradition has been performed with little interruption for over 380 years. A play of life and death, the passion play was first presented as an offering of thanks to God in 1633 after the Black Death stopped just short of the village. Villagers swore an oath to perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. They first fulfilled this promise during Pentecost in 1634 on a stage the villagers erected in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. Today, the theatre offers over 4,000 covered seats. At various times, the wide outdoor stage holds hundreds of people, small herds of sheep and goats, donkeys, a horse, armored Roman soldiers and dozens of choristers wearing long, flowing robes. The Passion Play has been described as the world’s largest amateur dramatic performance. All actors, from those with large speaking parts like Jesus and Mary to choral and orchestra members and ushers must have been born in Oberammergau or have lived there for at least 20 years, by law. Almost half of the villagers participate in the Passion Play in some fashion. Oberammergau is home to more than just the Passion Play, however. The colorful and quant village, embedded in the stunning mountain scenery of the Alps, is also famous for its beautiful wood carvings and the picturesque houses decorated with “Luftlmalerei”, or wall paintings. The peaks of the local mountains offer a spectacular view of King Ludwig County with its fairy tale castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof.  Well-maintained hiking trails along the river Ammer offer a unique view of meadows and forests, and cable cars and ski lifts run year-round in the Ammergau mountains.

Oberammergau is nestled in Bavaria, the southeastern area of Germany. Bayern, as the Germans refer to it, boasts soaring peaks, magical castles, cloud-topped Alps, the fertile valley of the Danube, and charming local traditions. Throw in the fun capital of Munich, lederhosen, medieval walled towns

Exceeding Expectations Since 1950

and Biergartens and there really is something for everyone. Equally important is the air of “Gemutlichkeit”, a state of warmth, friendliness and good cheer in Bavaria that makes the region relaxing and easy to enjoy. Beginning on May 16, 2020, the community of Oberammergau will perform the Passion Play for the 42nd time. The village expects approximately 450,000 visitors for the passion play, primarily international guests. Ticket for the event are being reserved now, and will sell out well in advance. We are here to provide guidance and expertise if you are interested in attending the Passion Play, or simply want to explore this magical region.

"MILLENIALS" IN GOOD POSITION to Invest for the Future ARTICLE MARK HORNOK

I

f you were born anywhere from 1982 to 2001, or within a few years of this range, you are considered a “Millennial.” As a member of this group,

you share many things—cultural references, familiarity with technology, attitudes toward work and family—with others your age. And if you’re one of the “older” Millennials, you and your peers have something else in common—specifically, you have a good opportunity to launch investment strategies to help you save for the future. Why are you so well positioned to invest for the future? For one thing, it’s because you have so much of the future ahead of you. As an investor, time is your greatest ally, for a couple of reasons. First, the more years you have to invest, the greater the growth potential of your investments. And second, by investing for the long term, you can help reduce the impact of periods of short-term volatility on your portfolio. Furthermore, since you may be in the early stage of your career, you probably have yet to reach your max-

imum earnings and may be eligible to put in the full annual amount to a Roth IRA, one of the most effective retirement savings vehicles available. (Eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRA is phased out over a specific income range.) When you invest in a Roth IRA, your earnings have the opportunity to grow tax free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59½ and you’ve had your account for at least five years. Even if you do contribute to a Roth IRA, you can still participate in your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) if you work for a company, a 457(b) if you work for a state or local government, or a 403(b) if you work for a school or other tax-exempt organization. And you should indeed contribute to your employer’s plan, because it offers some key benefits: Your earnings accumulate on a tax-deferred basis, and you typically fund your plan with pre-tax dollars. So the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) The amount you can afford to put into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan depends on your earnings and other circumstances—but you should at least strive to contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. Otherwise, you’ll be walking away from “free” money. All the money you contribute to your plan is yours, but if you leave your job before a specified vesting period—which often ranges from three to seven years—you may not be able to keep all your employer’s contributions. Check your plan’s rules to see how this applies to you. Of course, since you, as a Millennial, are in the early stage of your working years, you may well be on the lookout for new job opportunities. But if you are close to being fully vested in your 401(k), you might consider waiting a few extra months—or even a year—to take a new job, so that you can leave with the money your employer has contributed.  As a Millennial, you’ve got time on your side as you invest for the future. Make sure you take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way. Mark Hornok is a Financial Planner with Edward Jones, with offices at 100 E. Station Street, Suite 105 in Barrington. TWO GENERATIONS OF MARQUARDTS INVEST IN COMMUNITY, SERVICE, AND A LOAD OF LICORICE ARTICLE MARISSA PLESCIA PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON

D

aniel Marquardt still remembers his first day of work with the Marquardt Buick and GMC

dealership in Barrington. He was 13 years old, and had begged his father

for the previous two years to let him come to work. Finally his father caved in, and brought him to the dealership. He introduced Daniel to the Service Director, and said, “Tell him to do anything you want him to do, and if he doesn’t do it well, fire him.” Daniel’s father, Larry Marquardt, opened the

dealership in 1950. Larry always had an interest in cars, and decided to go into the business after returning from the Korean War. He started off working in a Ford store, and eventually realized he needed to be his own boss. Now the dealership is owned by his two sons,

Kurt (President) and Daniel (Vice President). Over sixty years, the dealership has become the longest and most established auto dealership in Barrington. Growing up in a family of 12, each child in the

Marquardt family had to work at the dealership at some point in their life, getting to do all the “dirty chores,” as Kurt said. But despite this family rule, the parents actually discouraged their kids from following the family line of work. “With our parents, it was a very interesting dynamic

because it was the opposite of nepotism. They really wanted us to follow our dreams,” Daniel said. However, this did not keep Kurt and Daniel away

as they both decided to join the dealership, and later would take over the business after their father’s death 16 years ago. While Daniel always had a dream of working with cars, Kurt didn’t decide until college that this would become his chosen path. “I was faced with, ‘Do I go into grad school or do I

go into business?’, so I pretty much decided my senior year that I would go that direction,” Kurt said. Kurt and Daniel have worked hard to keep the ideals

of their father. They both believe in the value of creating a positive customer experience. Driven by their customer focus, the business has a customer retention rate that is three times higher than the average dealership. CONTINUED >

Parting Thoughts

To my big sister, My earliest memory of you is Britney Spears. Remember how obsessed we were? You used to dress me up in this purple velvet jumpsuit we had lying around our basement, and you would choreograph dances for me to “...Baby One More Time” and “Oops!... I Did it Again.” By the time this article is published, you will already be in Australia. I know I said goodbye to you at the airport, but I still felt like it wasn’t enough. So that’s why I’m writing this letter. There has always been a bit of an age gap between us. It’s a shame that you’re leaving just as the gap is starting to close. But despite this Nicole (L) and Marissa in younger days.

age gap, you have always been my biggest role model. When we were younger, I remember always wanting to do things just because you were doing them. I took art classes at Kaleidoscopes because you were such a talented artist. I even took a cheerleading mini course because you were a cheerleader. Sure, neither of those things went very far for me, but you still always pushed me to do my best. Being the oldest, you set the standards high for our brother Mark and I, and you continue to do so. For that, I will forever be grateful to you.

You're So Far Away You, Nicole, are one of the most opinionated people I’ve ever met.

While your stubbornness can be aggravating at times, and have led to countless arguments between us, it is also what I admire most about you. You know what you believe, and will stick to your ideals no matter what. Whether it’s picking a restaurant, or choosing a college, your recommendations have always been spot on. You are strong-minded, with an eye for detail. Please don’t ever lose this quality, Nicole, because it is what makes you so remarkable.
