ctober is our first anniversary issue. It’s been a year since we undertook the takeover/makeover of SW Lake Lifestyle. What a year it’s been. We chucked the old way of doing things to focus on two straight-forward goals: • Tell the stories inspired by the families in the wonderful communities we call home in SW Lake County. • Help our valued business partners achieve even greater financial success.

So far we’ve published stories by 38 different authors and 16 photographers have made contributions. We recognized 180 different local businesses and more than 45,000 votes were cast by readers for the inaugural Best of SW Lake Awards, honoring the top businesses in 23 categories. The first week of each month since last October 13,600 area families received SW Lake Lifestyle with personally curated content prepared by Editor Stephen Neilson. And we’ve helped introduce a number of businesses new to readers. Also celebrating an anniversary (#4) is LUXE Wearhouse in Kildeer, an innovative fashion boutique founded by Marcy Sparr right here in our own backyard. To commemorate this achievement, Marcy chatted recently with writer Margo Pelak about what’s trending this fall in women’s fashion. Not to forget the guys, fall fashion highlights are also covered in this issue. With a bit of a nip in the air, not to mention marching bands playing and footballs flying, the folks at Threads in Wauconda give us their take on the looks we should be sporting at tailgate parties on Saturdays and Sundays this fall. With the changing of the seasons we know winter can’t be too far off. Mark Wolfe of John’s Complete Auto in Wauconda offers a whole rash of reminders on ways to get ready for winter driving. As we embark on our second year, we remain committed to telling the stories that matter to families in the area. We welcome your input, dear readers, just as we look forward to helping more local businesses grow. Thanks, and we’ll see you around town.

ou don’t have to be a fan of “Game of Thrones” to understand

is coming

the headline on this page. Those of us in SW Lake County know full well that October is a good time to get our vehicles ready for

winter weather. We turned to Mark Wolfe, owner of John’s Complete Auto Service in Wauconda, for some advice before winter comes. SW LAKE LIFESTYLE: WHAT SHOULD READERS START DOING TO GET THEIR VEHICLES READY? MARK WOLFE: “We see such a range of winter driving issues around

here. Heavy snow. Icy roads. Reduced daylight. It all adds up to the potential for some treacherous conditions. My recommendations on what to do to get ready starts with tires. Inspect the tread, do the "penny test" and if your tread is low I can practically guarantee at some point this winter you will find yourself ‘slip-sliding away.’ “It's also very important to make sure your battery can handle the change in temperature we experience. The lower the temperature gets, the more power you need to start a car. But here's the problem, cold is a battery's enemy because it robs power. So just when you need power most, winter robs it from your battery. 14

SW Lake Lifestyle | October 2017

John's features loaner cars available while your car is being serviced.

“Please make sure to keep your windshield washer tank full with fluid that's rated for this area of the country. You'll thank me on that first really sloppy day. Are your wiper blades ready for replacement? You'll thank me about that, too. “Also on your checklist should be an oil change, a check of your engine coolant (yes, even in winter), swap out of filters, troubleshooting lights and bulbs, a check of the heater and defroster and a few

other odds and ends. Tending to all of this early before the first snow means you'll be ready when winter comes.”

in

MW: “Maintaining proper tire pressure is important for several rea-

sons. The most critical is safety. Over-inflated means a tire is actually making less contact with the road and wearing out the center of the tread. Under-inflated means too much contact is being made because

Sean Lee, Owner

the shoulders of the tires are in contact with the road and wearing out too quickly. Properly maintained tires last longer and help improve fuel economy. Tires that are inflated to the right pressure also provide a nicer ride and stand up better to potholes and other winter driving hazards.” SWL: WHAT ARE THE TYPICAL REASONS FOR

A "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT GOING ON? MW: “There's a number of reasons why the Check Engine light

comes on. One reason in particular is easy to check: was your gas

cap replaced correctly after the last fill-up? Other typical reasons for the Check Engine light have to do with catalytic converters and sensors so it makes sense to bring your car to a professional repair shop for a complete inspection.” SWL: WHAT'S YOUR DREAM CAR? MW: “1970 Pontiac GTO. That was the year that the GTO—under

the leadership of John DeLorean—maxed out on power. Truth is, I loved the muscle car era of the late 60s and early 70s. I learned to drive in my aunt’s 1966 Le Mans, the car that morphed into a GTO.” SWL: HOW'D YOU GET STARTED IN THIS BUSINESS? MW: “I got started in high school. While in college at Illinois State

I got a job in a repair shop in Bloomington and you could say my passion for cars bloomed (bad pun, I know). After moving back here I worked for other owners in a couple places, but knew one day I needed to have my own place. When John's became available in 2015 my wife, Amy, and I were able to put together the financing to buy out the owner who had operated the business for years. I'm really proud to carry on the legacy of excellent service for a fair price with my team of knowledgeable mechanics.”

SWL: LUXE OFFERS A STYLING SERVICE BY MAIL, KIND OF LIKE STITCH FIX. WHAT IS THAT LIKE? MS: “It is a similar concept, but it’s a lot more personalized. We will hand-

curate pieces and send them to our customers. For some shoppers who drive out from the city we’ll do an initial styling appointment. After that we will do LUXE styleboxes because it’s more convenient. What’s different about us is that you can always get us on the phone. We can get to know you personally and send you clothing that we know you’ll love.”

SWL: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE STYLES THAT ARE TRENDING NOW FOR FALL? MS: “There are so many new styles! Blush pink is still in, and ruffles are

back for sleeves and shoulders. Flared sleeves are in right now. Pairing the feminine styles with Moto jackets to balance out the look—that’s very current. Skinny jeans are still a staple, and we’re seeing interesting faux suedes and faux fur fabrics this season.”

W Lake Lifestyle and the Windy City Bulls gave a group of readers a chance of a lifetime to help kick-off the team’s preseason. Joined by Bob Love, legendary Bulls player and NBA

WINDOW TREATMENTS:

They Do More than Open or Close The Hunter Douglas PowerViewÂŽ App makes it easy to control window treatments from anywhere, anytime.

ARTICLE JAY ADAMS any people think window treatments are only for aesthetics or privacy, but they are used for more than that. While they

do beautify a home and can block unwanted visual intrusions, shades and blinds can control light, contribute to energy effi-

ciency, and help with home security. Light control allows you to control how the light enters the home. Is a particular room just too bright but has a great exterior view? Harsh daylight can be diffused with certain types of shades, transforming a harsh, brightly lit room into a soft one that allows the light to filter into the room and illuminate it more evenly. When these treatments are open, sheer fabric components filter the light and block much of the view into the room from outside but preserve the view out of the windows from the inside. While open, these same types of shades can block a dramatic amount of harmful Ultra Violet rays. This helps preserve furnishings, flooring, and other items in the room from damage due to sun fade. 28

Sheer fabric components allow light to filter into the room and helps prevent sun fade.

With the development of motorized window treatments there are many more options when it comes to light control and energy efficiency. Not only can hard to reach windows be operated more easily but combine that with home automation and you can get your blinds to open and close automatically. Hunter Douglas PowerView® treatments can be set to work with several automation systems as well as their own downloadable App. The treatments can be scheduled to operate at any time you desire. Scenes can be set up to maximize the shade’s contribution to energy efficiency by opening or closing at specific times to control the sun’s heat. Automation can also help synchronize the window treatments to your life. Imagine your blinds opening as you get up in the morning, closing during the heat of the day, then reopening as the sun goes down! The Hunter Douglas PowerView® App allows you to control the operation of your window treatments remotely from anywhere with a hand held device and WIFI. Home security is enhanced with this feature because you can set the blinds to open and close on any schedule automatically from anywhere you are. The home can appear to be occupied deterring possible break ins. Motorized treatments also eliminate exposed cords so children and pets are safer too. Parting Thoughts

The Rebirth of a Country Club ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL BEIGHTOL

T

he venerable Wynstone neighborhood, just past the corner of Miller and Rand Roads in North Barrington, has always had what some refer to as a wow factor: beautiful homes, ultra-spacious

yards,

winding

roads surrounding the only Jack Nicklaus designed golf course in Illinois and an imposing two-story club house with a lively swimming pool across the way from one of the largest practice putting greens anywhere. The wow factor got ramped up a lot this summer and it had nothing to do with the neighborhood, golf course or club house. In one swift move the club’s $6 million debt was wiped away by nine families when they assumed ownership of the now The Club at Wynstone Ribbon Cut.

rebranded Club at Wynstone. A member of the investing families, Dan Murphy, took on the role of Club Chairman. He says the group of families took over the club in a deal with equity members. Now, The Club at Wynstone is experiencing a surge in new members. Long gone are the days when only a husband could be considered a member. Under the new regime, both spouses are members. Murphy, who is also President/CEO of Idealease, Inc., says the changes are part of an overall plan to make the club more family-friendly and inclusive. Also gone is the men’s only terrace grill. It’s open now to all members and their families and has seen a surge in use. One other tradition has been wiped away: initiation fees for new members. It’s yet another example of a vibrant country club pledging to stay relevant with the needs of local
