I hope you enjoy the new layout and this month’s Active theme. Sample a new healthy recipe, such as the deconstructed vegetable sushi bowl in this issue, each week rather than trying to starve yourself and then failing miserably. CITY SCENE ARTICLE KIMBERLY WRIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE BRONZELENS FILM FESTIVAL

BRONZELENS FILM FESTIVAL WAS EVERYTHING ATLANTA NEEDED FOR THE UPCOMING FILM INDUSTRY. Let’s face it:

BronzeLens FILM FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 8 YEARS WITH A BANG!

Atlanta is definitely a part of the film industry conversation and Mrs. Kathleen Bertrand’s wonderful vision from eight years ago has grown into something beautiful. BronzeLens Film Fest, as it is affectionately called, is simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Celebrating its eighth year, the BronzeLens Film Festival differs from other events on so many levels, offering a great touch, feel and interaction with celebrities, filmmakers and other film buffs that is not often experienced at other film festivals. The BronzeLens Film Festival kicked off the five-day festival with a bang and plenty of education, awards, screenings, recognition and BronzeLens love. Festival highlights included the All Shorts All Day presented by BET Networks, Legal Mash Ups, A Behind the Scenes Look with Janine Barrios, all the Bronze Carpets, 8th Annual BronzeLens Womens Superstar Luncheon, Lamman Rucker’s Master Class, the Welcome at Atlanta City Hall, industry-specific workshops, student tracks, the BronzeLens Award Show, Sunday Brunch with the Brothers and the BronzeLens Closing Night. Each day was as promising as the last, with moments had and memories made.

14

South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2018

The 8th Annual BronzeLens Womens Superstar Luncheon was extremely rewarding and superstar studded. Gracing the Bronze Carpet were some amazing talent, from T.C. Carson, well-known as Kyle Barker on “Living Single,” and Crystal Fox, aka, Luann Corbin on “In the Heat of the Night,” to Hanna Young on “The Have and The Have Nots,” Omar Dorsey, well-known as Hollywood on “Queen Sugar,” and Timon Durrett, known as “Queen Sugar” star David West. Dana Owens, aka Queen Latifah, was named the ICON Superstar and had a stimulating conversation with Will Packer about people of color being properly respected in film and music. Queen Latifah and Will dropped some real nuggets during their conversation. Nefertite Nguvu, Crystal Fox and Neema Barnette were also honored. Nefertite was named as the Behind the Lens Superstar, Crystal as the Visionary Superstar and Neema, the Legendary Behind The Lens Superstar. The inspiring Queen Latifah shared three golden nuggets:

“HAVE GREAT PEOPLE AROUND YOU THAT FIGHT WITH YOU. TEACH EACH OTHER WHAT YOU LEARN AND THEN LEARN NEW THINGS.” “I LEARNED WHAT REJECTION AND FAILURE FELT LIKE—WHICH HELPED ME LEARN HOW TO RECOVER.” “WE NEED EACH OTHER MORE THAN EVER BEFORE. CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE YOUTH. DON’T BE AFRAID TO LISTEN TO THEM.” A special thank you goes to Kathleen Bertrand for helping Atlanta continue to shine in the film industry. We recognize you shining brightly as the BronzeLens founder.

Active New Year, For a New You By Zwade Marshall, MD, MBA

H

appy New Year South Fulton-ers! It’s the beginning of a new year, and I know many of us will set our sights on meeting our New Years’ resolutions. If your number one resolution is to lose weight and become healthier, join the club! And while research shows that only 64% of us will maintain our resolutions through the end of the first month of the New Year and less than half will be maintained through six months, this year can be different! The key is to keep it simple, realistic and safe. As an interventional pain management physician, I often treat patients for herniated discs and sciatic nerve pain when they over exert themselves in the gym for the first time in years. Many of these patients are fed up with their creeping weight gain and sedentary lifestyle, and desperately want a new lease on life. A setback due to injury is a sure way to derail their hopes for the New Year. Below are a few of my personal recommendations to increase your activity in 2018. • Take the opportunity to stand – If you have a sedentary job, you are spending many hours of your day sitting relatively still, and burning very few calories. You would have likely eaten 2-3 times during the work day, and at the end of the day, you may be tired but trying to muster the energy to workout. Consider standing more at work. A standing desk can be a great way to increase your activity and combat the negative effects of a sedentary job. • Ease into your fitness routine – If you have not been in the gym for months start slowly. Set reasonable goals and remember that consistency is more important than short-term gains. The key to maintaining your routine lies in picking an activity that you actually enjoy. If you have never liked running, now is not the time to start. Consider yoga, spin class, or Pilates. • Incorporate activity into your daily routine – Researchers have found that brisk walking for 30 minutes daily will trim your waistline, improve your mood and even reduce your risk of heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. So, take your dog on a brisk walk instead of letting the dog out in your yard. Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator, or grab your lunch to go and take a walk during your lunch break.

Dr. Marshall is accepting new patients at his Camp Creek, Douglasville and Gwinnett locations.

Three True Confessions

I realized that in overcoming the limitations of my physical self I created a spark and renewed a light inside that moved me from dark places into fitness and health of the body, but more importantly, of the spirit and the mind. When I realized that I could share this sense of wholeness with anyone who needed it, the physical workout was no longer an issue for me—okay, not an issue 85 to 90% of the time, especially since we should probably be honest in our confessions. While we’re at it, there something else I’d like to share. I never had a personal trainer before I became one. I guess that makes me a selfstarter, or contrary, or let’s just go with unique. The point is that there’s no specific order in which the journey should begin. If you’ll allow your life to inform your exercise, you’re already at the starting line. Which HEY YOU THERE—YES YOU! I’m going to tell you something that

brings me to my final confession. I know that your best life is in you.

PAC OFFERS TRAINING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

FITNESS TRENDS TO RESET YOUR ROUTINE WITH PRECISION ATHLETIC CORPS ARTICLE ERIKKA SEARLES MITCHELL

18

South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2018

4 TRENDS FROM ZED AND TANETTA OF PRECISION ATHLETIC CORPS Is your fitness routine starting to be a bore? Maybe you were going strong and hit a plateau. I talked to South Fulton’s Zedrick and Tanetta Carter to try to track some trends for 2018 that might help you refresh and restart your fitness goals. Precision Athletic Corps was born when trainers Zed and Tanetta were holding boot camp in Trammell Crow Park near Cascade Road. As it started to grow, the Carters asked themselves, “How else can we impact the community along with visiting schools?” They found a space near Fulton Industrial to share with TMDC a base for competitive cheering under the direction of Tavena Mitchell. In this shared space, PAC began to thrive. They offer speed and agility training for adults and children, along with boot camp and baton and flag conditioning programs.  Coach Tanetta, who was a feature twirler in college with both the Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University marching bands, stated that they work with kids and teens that are training in specific sports, including volleyball, cheer, dance, baseball, basketball and football, including a partnership with the IDAREU program that has been featured right here in South Fulton Lifestyle. In addition, they offer training clinics and skills-training at the area high schools. PAC recently held a holiday showcase and grand opening in their new space that featured both a Precision Auxiliary flag showcase and TM Dance and competitive cheer exhibitions. Coach Tanetta says it’s a pleasure to engage with youth and have a positive impact and that the skills they teach at PAC can take students to and through college.  Coach Zed offered four trends, from tech options to online competitors, that might motivate you to get back into fitness in the new year!

VIRTUAL REALITY TRAINING

From active video games to virtual reality goggles that connect to your cell phone,

VR training is all the rage! With systems such as the XBOX and Playstation 4, running in correct form, jumping and climbing are fun for kids of all ages. “This allows for fun for the whole family!” said Coach Zed. “It removes some of the anxiety that you might have about working out when you can train in another country or a change of scenery such as a forest.” Virtual Reality Fitness Training is the outcome when workouts are infused with technology and virtual reality is a main component. It's as if you're the star of your own video game where 3-dimensional images are viewed on a headset or screen that is synced with interactive gloves. Imagine putting on a headset and walking into a gym, working out with a trainer or joining a group in a boot camp class—all while standing in your living room. Indeed, your mind will be tricked and your muscles challenged. The possibilities are endless with this technology, Facebook has already invested $2 billion in this emerging industry with Sony and Samsung following their lead.

FOUR FITNESS TRENDS

(CON TI N U ED)

ONLINE AND SOCIAL MEDIA FITNESS CHALLENGES Social media companies, such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter are proven powerhouse platforms for health and fitness pros. These gurus are uber popular, flooding their pages a few times a day with amazing weight-loss stories, before and after photos, workouts and nutritional meal plans. More than ever, the internet is the "go to" source for health and wellness tips and information. Fans are loyal to their favorite online experts, with some amassing upwards of 3.5 million followers. Social media content has evolved over the years, becoming a top "free" marketing tool for online and social media fitness.

OrangeTheory and other fitness franchises use these to track you as you burn up to 1,200 calories per workout. “My female clients in particular love this. You can see the numbers and track your progress,” says Coach Zed.

BANNEKER RISING

THE STORY OF TURNAROUND AT COLLEGE PARK’S BANNEKER HIGH SCHOOL IS NOTHING SHORT OF IMPRESSIVE

JUST A FEW YEARS AGO, WHISPERS PERMEATED THE SOUTH FULTON COMMUNITY SUGGESTING COLLEGE PARK’S BENJAMIN BANNEKER HIGH SCHOOL MIGHT CLOSE ITS DOORS. During this time Banneker High School was the proverbial poster child for organizational dysfunction and academic failure—low test scores, a revolving door of school leaders and violent and disruptive student behavior had become the norm. For three consecutive years, Banneker carried a sub-50% graduation rate, when the state’s average was nearly 30 points higher. Banneker’s performance was not just low, it was well below the performance of schools with similar demographics across the state of Georgia. Accordingly, excuses for Banneker‘s cycle of failure were frustrating to many of the school’s longstanding supporters. If Banneker was to improve, then a comprehensive system of change was needed for all schools within the Banneker cluster. In response, FCS introduced the Achievement Zone, a term adopted by the district referring to the geographic area where resident schools require the most support and intervention. Through the Achievement Zone, a series of common instructional and behavioral expectations were implemented for the purpose of creating alignment between schools and to ensure a relatively common experience for students.

A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP FCS knew that having the right leader at Banneker was also necessary. The district turned to Dr. Duke Bradley, III, a veteran administrator who had been designated as a turnaround leader by the Georgia Department of Education. Bradley had improved the standing of Atlanta Public Schools’ Wesley International Academy. Under his leadership, the Grant Park International Baccalaureate (IB) charter school was saved from closure and was eventually awarded a five-year renewal of its charter. Most importantly, Bradley had created a new vision for excellence for a school in distress, and the same efforts were sorely needed at Banneker.

22

South Fulton Lifestyle | January 2018

A NEW DAY In short order, Bradley declared “A New Day” at Banneker High School, a slogan intended to signify that the days of old were gone. Consistent with stated expectations for all Achievement Zone schools, new programmatic mandates were immediately implemented.  “We needed to immediately restore the faith of our parent community and improve every aspect of our school. Early reform efforts were wide ranging. Banneker partnered with Chick-Fil-A to train professional staff members and reassigned teachers based on their strengths rather than their teaching preferences.   Another major change was the addition of the Junior Achievement Magnet Program led by veteran administrator Dr. Ava Debro. Junior Achievement’s curricular design focuses on the business concepts of marketing, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. In its first year, JA-MBA students outperformed their peers in nearly every statistical category. For the first time in 10 years, the school is 100% staffed. In 2016, Banneker also boasted the highest rate of growth in graduation rate among the 16 traditional high schools in Fulton County Schools. And over a five-year span, the school has produced the second highest graduation rate growth of all FCS high schools, improving by nearly 30 points. Since the launch of the Achievement Zone, Banneker has had consecutive years of growth on the state-issued Milestones Exams, and they recently doubled down on that success by producing double-digit gains in Math, Language Arts, and Science. Bradley attributes Banneker’s success to his staff, new talent imported from other schools, veteran teachers who serve as mentors, and a talented administrative team. Last fall, Banneker received its biggest news yet. The school was awarded a $5.4 million Federal School Improvement Grant—one of only five schools statewide to earn the award. Banneker’s use of the grant corresponds with Bradley’s vision for the school.  “There are high demand industries in metro Atlanta that do not have a well-supplied workforce. With all of the community revitalization efforts happening south of our airport, we cannot afford for our kids to be excluded from the positive change happening in their own communities. We want Banneker’s narrative to be that we produce students who have the skills necessary to be competitive in the 21st century workforce,” says Bradley.

MORE WORK TO DO Bradley acknowledges that Banneker’s process of improvement is incomplete. Though there is more hard work ahead, Banneker High School, under new leadership and a new vision for excellence, is definitely rising!

I DON’T WANT KIDS BUT I DON’T WANT HORMONES EITHER. What do I do about birth control? Unless you have certain medical problems or a certain family history, hormones can be protective. But……. You don’t want them—I get it. So here’s what you do: GET AN IUD. IUDs have gotten a bad rap because some doctors are very careless with them. However, just know that they can be freakin awesome. There are about five different types. They have different timespans and indications, but THERE IS NO HORMONE CIRCULATING IN YOUR BODY when you have one. If there is hormone in it, it works only in your womb. That’s it! Nothing in the bloodstream. As a physician, I ALWAYS make sure that I’ve placed it properly by giving patients an ultrasound after it’s in. It’s that simple: you put it in, check on it once a year and have no worries about getting pregnant for 3-10 years. Most times it can lighten or stop your period as well. I urge my patients to stop with the “homegirl consults” and see a licensed OB/GYN to get the real deal. Send your questions to askdrtosha@gmail.com. We’d love to hear what’s on your mind. And follow Dr. Rogers at IG: @BLACKDOCRUTH | FB: @BLACKDOCRUTH

PARTING THOUGHTS

THE STICKINESS FACTOR

01

1. Start small. Tiny chunks. If you've never exercised, pick two or three days a week, 10 minutes. That's it! Commit small before you commit big. Once you do that for a while, add a day. Once you're up to five or six

days, add five minutes. Before you know it, you'll be down 10 pounds and feeling better.

02

2. Figure out what motivates you. What are you playing for? (Yes, I ended that sentence with a preposition, Mom.) I work out because I like food more than other married adult activities, and I have to offset that. (Well, maybe not that much, but there are times when it's a real close second.) My other motivation is that I don't want my mom to call me fat. I'm clearly still dealing with childhood issues. Don't judge me! Next, I'm trying to set a solid example for my boys. We have to show our kids what good looks like. And finally, I like looking fit. Is that vain? I wouldn't call it that; I just like to look in the mirror, and like what I see looking back at me. If I don't, it's time for FASTS AND EXTRA WORKOUTS! Figure out why you need to make a change, and let that be your motivation. Oh yeah, my other reason is because I wouldn't mind looking like that pic of Stacey Dash when she was 40. Look it up. JS!

4. Find an accountability partner. Chances are, you're not strong enough to pull off major changes by yourself—most of us aren't. But that's why we have friends.
