out what the area is best known for and eat that dish as many times at as many different restaurants I can find. For instance, in London, I ate fish and chips like one zillion times and, unfortunately, that pea mush. Who knew baby food could be such a delicacy? (Yuck!) In Greece, I ate, you guessed it, spanakopita, gyro meat and Greek salad everywhere! I figured the salad had to balance out the other two. Am I right? Am I right? Well, SoFu is beginning to work its way up the food ladder, with plentiful area options to please any palate. To that end, we got a chance this month to peek into what’s become a staple in the area—Baltimore Crab & Seafood—and their newest addition, Bella. We’ll learn how Shema is establishing a true culinary enterprise across SoFu! And, since it’s our annual Food and Drink issue, you too, get a chance to do the same! I’m absolutely expecting to be at a dinner party at one of your homes and be offered one of the drink delicacies we’ve got featured this month!

THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA IS ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT

AND

LARGEST

YOUTH

DEVELOPMENT

ORGANIZATIONS IN THE NATION. Organized to build character among young people, it is uniquely designed to offer participants activities that promote character development, survival skills, physical fitness and essential life skills. Boy Scouts of America's  membership stands at about 2.4 million members. Boys begin with Cub Scouting in first through fifth grade, followed by the Boy Scout’s flagship program for boys ages 11 to 18  and ending with the ultimate accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout.  Acquiring this honor is no easy accomplishment. As a matter of fact, only 4% of the nation’s Boy Scouts actually reach this status and only 1% of the “Top Scouts” are African-American.  Demarko Hooper, Cabral Jeter, Joshua Owens, Matthew Thacker and Nicholas Wilborn accepted the challenge and have risen to the decorated level of Eagle Scout.  They all have one thing in common—they all started as Tiger Cubs in the first grade and later earned their Eagle Scout rank at Troop 54 in East Point, led by Scout Masters Brent Summers and Phil Owens. “Becoming an Eagle Scout was one of the last promises I made to my mother who passed away,” says Demarko. “My mother signed me up for scouting when we moved to Atlanta in 2005.”

Matthew

Demarko’s mother, Sandra, was an active volunteer with Pack 3310 and Troop 54 until her passing in 2011. “I learned so much during my matriculation through scouting. I made dear friends and if it weren’t for Miles and Matthew Thacker and their mother, Ms. Mia, who was like a second mom to me, I wouldn’t have accomplished this honor,” Demarko adds. “One of the most important skills I learned from scouting was time management.” Demarko graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, and is currently a sophomore attending Howard University, where he is majoring in Theater Arts with a concentration in Acting. Cabral says that completing his Eagle Scout project was most exciting. He built a student sustainability deck at his boarding school. Cabral credits the accomplishment to all of the experiences he shared with his friends while working on numerous projects.  Cabral says it was tough for him, because while his parents lived in the South Fulton area, he lived out of state. “I attended boarding school at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Maryland, for four years, and every summer I had to play catch-up to get my Boy Scout assignments done,” Cabral says. “I was also involved in required extracurricular activities, and learning how to excel while managing it all has prepared me for my future endeavors.” Cabral is now a freshman attending North Carolina A&T State University and majoring in Political Science.  “My path to becoming an Eagle Scout has been one of hard work and fun, strengthening my leadership and communications skills,” Joshua says. Joshua, like all other Eagle Scouts, has many

merit badges for successfully completing specific requirements. Of all the merit badges he’s earned to accomplish the honor, the wilderness survival badge is his favorite. “I actually participated in the survival activity twice because I enjoyed it so much. The first year I made a lean-to shelter with branches and rocks. I slept in the shelter overnight, and the second year I built a giant dome structure with a few other scouts,” Joshua says. Joshua attends Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School and plans to attend Georgetown or Vanderbilt University upon graduation in May 2019. Matthew was influenced to join scouts by his older brother, Miles, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2017. “I became very interested in scouting after seeing my brother and Nicholas’ brother, Peter, participating in scouts. Both of them are Eagle Scouts and have set such good examples for me and my friends,” Matthew says. “It’s very easy to lose focus

and drop out of scouting because it’s a 12-year journey, if you start from Cub Scouts. It wasn’t easy to keep going, but the friendships I’ve made and bonds I’ve developed with my scout brothers have made a difference in my life,” Matthew says. Matthew’s favorite merit badge activities were survival skills activities and swimming. He graduated from Westlake High School and is a freshman attending Savannah State University, where he is majoring in Civil Engineering. Nicholas says the requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout promote persistence, creativity and the ability to develop and implement a plan from beginning to end. “I want more African-American young men to realize that being an Eagle Scout prepares you for the real world,” Nicholas says. “You learn how to face situations and challenges head-on. Being an Eagle Scout represents that I am an ideal citizen and it’s taught me the important lesson of being a

responsible young adult.” Nicholas graduated from Westlake High School’s Magnet Program with a 3.8 GPA. He is a freshman attending Morehouse College and majoring in Applied Physics.  All five of these young men agree that the parents who volunteered were major contributors to their success and that countless volunteer hours and sacrifices made by their parents ensured they achieved their scouting goals.

Troop 54 is one of the few in the Atlanta Area Council that has held a charter for over 90 years, with current sponsor, East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church. For more information, send inquiries to troop54@gmail.com.

THE SOUTH ATLANTA CULINARY SCENE IS BURSTING AT THE SEAMS. Fabulous food and amazing chefs are giving fine dining a new look in the South. Shema Fulton opened her first establishment, Baltimore Crab & Seafood, in Philadelphia in 1995. Her mother and Head Chef Myra Fulton crafted the menu now being served at the Atlanta-based restaurant. In 2006, Shema introduced herself to the Atlanta night scene with Pearl Restaurant & Lounge on Peters Street. While this was the beginning of what would become a growing Atlanta empire, it started with Shema as the owner, operator and head chef. Pearl Restaurant & Lounge is ideal for a young, hip and trendy crowd looking for an upscale Atlanta nightlife experience.

In 2012, Shema opened Baltimore Crab & Seafood on Fairburn Road. Myra and Shema used the same recipes created in Philadelphia with her family at the center of this culinary experience. In 2017, Executive Chef Keoko Turner was hired alongside Chef Myra to continue executing their family’s vision. According to their website, Baltimore Crab & Seafood has been instrumental in redefining the dining experience for Cascade and the surrounding areas. The intimate ambiance is perfect for a mature audience wishing to indulge in delicious seafood and urban-inspired dishes. In 2017, Shema teamed up with singer extraordinaire K. Michelle and opened Puff and Petals. This lounge features an over-thetop menu complemented by crafty cocktails. Right in the heart of a growing social scene on Edgewood Avenue, Executive Chef Nilka Hendricks leads the team at this popular Atlanta nightlife destination. After working in the health care industry for many years, Chef Nilka took the leap to attend culinary school. Her love for cooking has taken her from cook to executive chef. Nilka is on a mission to “Change the world one dish at a time” and Puff and Petals is an amazing scene in which to execute this vision. As a mom of three, Nilka says her children are the grounding force for constant motivation and inspiration. As a contestant on Gordan Ramsey’s reality show, “Hell’s Kitchen,” she continued to push herself in the pursuit of culinary excellence. As executive chef of Puff and Petals, Nilka runs a highly successful personal chef business serving celebrity and elite clientele. She is all about quality and passion for the palate and the heart.

Executive Chef Keoko Turner. Chef Turner is a lover of Asian cuisine yet enjoys the militant structures of French kitchens. When asked about his journey to becoming an executive chef, Keoko says he was certain he was destined to become a chef and has dedicated his existence to the world of culinary arts. He encourages any young, up and coming chef to attend culinary school to enhance their grounding in the world of culinary arts because a college education is the first step toward taking yourself and your career seriously. As executive chef of two popular South Fulton restaurants, he remarks that there is no grand secret to running two kitchens, outside of hoping that the team at both places will continue to push themselves to be the best they can be. Keoko is dedicated to the success of the kitchens he is blessed to serve in. As the former owner of KeKe’s Confections, he is certain that traces of this once booming dessert business are still alive and well in all of his desserts. Business mogul Shema is slowly building a culinary empire across South Fulton. Fulton and K. Michelle are scheduled to open Garden Parc on Cascade Avenue in the former home of Live Edge. This dynamic duo plans to offer tapas and specialty cocktails in a high energy entertainment-based environment. The executive chefs’ collaboration will consist of none other than Chef Nilka Hendricks and Chef Keoko Turner.   20

20 SCHOLARSHIP BRUNCH PRESENTED BY NATIONAL ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION OF SPELMAN COLLEGE Does Your Doctor Fit Your Style?

W

By Pickens A. Patterson III, MD

hat may at first seem like an odd question becomes an extremely relevant question with further reflection. Whether or not you and your physician mesh may at times be a decisive factor in whether or not you are receiving the best healthcare possible and could very well impact the results of your treatment and outcome. When you are choosing a doctor, you should most certainly consider his or her training, background and board certification status. You may also want to look at online reviews of your doctor, but make sure you take the good and the bad evaluations with a grain of salt and look at the evaluations as a whole. Studies show that patients with bad reviews are more likely to respond to anonymous evaluations than those with good experiences. Likewise, it is highly unlikely that a doctor will legitimately have 5 stars in all categories on every review. Now that you have done your basic homework and researched your new doctor to be, how do you know if he or she “fits your style?” In my experience there are several components of a good physician patient relationship and several questions you should ask yourself after meeting your doctor. The most important aspect of a physician patient relationship is respect. Does your doctor and his staff treat you with respect? Does your doctor listen to you and address your concerns? Studies show that patients perceive a doctor as being more attentive when they sit down and make eye contact with them rather than stand over them or stare at a computer screen. Some people find it impressive to have a doctor who is direct and to the point and simply tells the patient what they need for treatment and leaves out what other patients feel is compassion, or a personalized touch. At Alliance Spine and Pain we make every effort to please our patients and to provide you with healthcare that is unsurpassed. If you are looking for a competent, professional physician and staff who value you and your time and will always treat you with respect and not just a number, we “fit your style”. Dr. Patterson is accepting new patients at his Camp Creek and Gwinnett locations.

Cancer Diagnosis:

It's Up to You What's Next ENCOURAGING WORDS FROM A SURVIVOR IN OBSERVANCE OF BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH CANCER IS AN UNFAIR DISEASE THAT NO ONE DESERVES. I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer three years ago and I was truly horrified. My diagnosis threw me into an emotional turmoil and I didn’t know what to do or where to begin. I felt overwhelmed and worried about my future, coupled with information overload.  I had eight rounds of chemotherapy and 32 rounds of radiation. My doctor appointments after treatment were every three months. Each appointment gave me, and still does, anxiety and hope that my cancer has remained in remission. I understand now that it is perfectly normal for anyone diagnosed with cancer to go through a whole range of emotions, often several in a day. I found that coping with my cancer was as difficult emotionally as it was physically, and those feelings continued through treatment and even now during these years after recovery. Before my diagnosis, I exercised three times a week. During my treatment I continued to exercise as least twice a week along with having physical therapy three days a week. I was told by the doctors that my exercise routine is what helped me with the healing process.  If you have been diagnosed with cancer, it is important to be proactive in your treatment. This will help you to regain control and channel all your emotional feelings into something more positive. Educate yourself on all  aspects of your cancer and the treatment involved so you will be aware of what’s to come. Cancer is stressful, which makes your support group critical. This was, indeed, my lifeline.  I learned to accept help and ways to alleviate  stress from experts, counselors and friends.  I am a cancer survivor, because of my unwavering faith in God!  34

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). God’s love kept me strong and determined. It is to Him that I owe my life.
