old. Brilliant. Brave. Beautiful. Could I possibly go on? Of course, I could! Even so, there still would not be enough words in any dictionary (traditional or urban) to express my whole heart when it comes to the important role of men in our communities. They’re our husbands, our guys or simply our “boo thangs.” They’re our fathers, our sons and our brothers. They’re our nephews, our uncles and our godfathers. If the truth were to be told, I’d even go as far as to tell you that they’re often fabricated, but not nearly enough celebrated. Isn’t it about time someone expressed just how much they’re appreciated? And that, my friends, is the aim of this edition: to celebrate and appreciate our men!

It is our hope that this month’s edition will be a tremendous treat for you. We have so many positive vibes to share that I get excited just thinking about what’s in store as you embark upon this literary journey. May every story put a smile on your face, may you learn something new, and may you feel just a little bit better about all that makes South Fulton the amazing place that it is. Happy reading! And to all the fathers out there, whether by birth, by marriage or by simply standing in the gap, Happy Father’s Day! Photo by James H. Moore

The Sankofa Center at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, the Center for Afrikan Biblical Studies of First Afrikan church in Lithonia and the Office of Black Women in Church and Society at the ITC are the co-hosts of this annual performance arts worship service. The purpose of this Sacred Arts service is to contribute a responsive and relevant interpretation of the role and function of women in the ministry of Jesus while intersecting their lives with the lives of Black women. The “Women at the Cross” worship service connects artistic liturgy and worship to reshaping our consciousness about the unjust realities faced by Black women and the uncompromising role in the majesty, beauty and glory of God’s presence in the world. Women at the Cross began in 1994 at Victory AME Church in Atlanta under the

leadership of Rev. Dr. Debora Grant. It moved to First Afrikan Church with its developer, ltihari Toure, and has expanded in its ministry through the Center for African Biblical Studies and the Office of Black Women in Church and Society at the ITC. Currently, Women at the Cross is a collaborative worship experience of several Metro Atlanta churches (Rize Community Church, Sankofa United Church of Christ and Dream Life Fellowship Christian Church) and seminaries. Last year, the invited churches and organizations collaborated to create a dramatic performing arts worship service around the theme "Certain Women-Soul Sanctuary,” reminding us that despite those forces that successfully marginalize women, youth and children, our hospitality and ability to create safe space have become sanctuaries in less likely places. The women at the cross reminds us that identification with the margins is not who God made us to be, and it is the work of freedom that we must strive to achieve.

Community Food Bank on Sunday, March 5. The location formerly known as Turner Field hosted the huge event that raised almost $1 million for the Food Bank and five additional hunger-relief organizations. Newly retired 11Alive anchor Brenda Wood hosted the event for her 25th year, and her former colleague, 11Alive Chief Meteorologist Chris Holcomb joined her as emcee for the day. Since 1984, the run has united faith groups, corporations and families dedicated to helping raise awareness about the prevalence of hunger for more than 900,000 working families, seniors and children in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia who face hunger and food insecurity each day. Atlanta Community Food Bank’s network of 600+ partner agencies in 29 counties help ensure 755,000 people receive the food assistance they desperately need.  Last year, the Food Bank distributed nearly 70 million pounds of food and grocery products—enough for nearly 58 million meals! he 2017 Atlanta International Auto Show (AIAS) recently rolled into the Georgia World Congress Center show-

casing the latest models for auto lovers. The AIAS is THE best place to start a search for a new car or learn about the newest automotive technology. Here is the SFL recap on the

2017/2018 models direct from the dealers.

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica has reinvented the minivan (replacing the Town & Country) on an all-new platform. The Pacifica breaks ground as the first hybrid in the minivan class, boasting 84 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in electric-only mode and 33 miles of all-electric range. If you’re driving around Atlanta, you can’t beat that in a minivan! If you’re looking for a sporty and fun crossover, the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport has to be on the list. The Nissan Rogue Sport is a full 12 inches shorter than the bestselling Rogue. However, there’s no loss of space inside. The five-passenger Rogue Sport has up to 22.9 cu. ft. of cargo space, which increases to 61.6 with the second row folded down.

n today’s world where young African American men are stereotyped and portrayed as uneducated, criminals or thugs, believers of this

typecast would find the following information unbelievable. Believe there is something special happening with a group of African American young men at Westlake High School in South Fulton. Believe the fact that two African American young men are graduating at the top of their class and have both been accepted to Ivy League, Big Ten and SEC (Southeastern Conference) institutions. Festus Ojo, 17, is the valedictorian of the Westlake High School Class of 2017, while John Johnson, 17, is the class salutatorian. These young men have claimed two of the highest honors presented after four years of high school matriculation, thanks to one simple concept—support!

ROD DIXON HITTING IT OUT OF THE PARK FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Onyema Anene Farrey FOUNDER

“E

ARTICLE AYANNA TROUTMAN verything is driven by a desire to help make others’ lives better, honestly at a lot of personal sacrifice.” If anyone knows about

sacrifice, it would be Rod Dixon. He is the co-founder of Dixon Davis, LLC. Upon graduating from the University of Florida with honors, Dixon went on to attend the University of Tennessee to obtain his Juris Doctor degree. Upon graduation from law school, the first nine years of his career were spent representing defendants. But after becoming troubled by helping people who had done wrong, Dixon decided to represent plaintiffs in personal injury cases. He represents a vast number of victims who have sustained physical, mental and emotional injuries. While simultaneously devoting time to his clients and cases, Dixon also runs his own nonprofit baseball organization. For as long as he can remember, he has been quite passionate about the sport. However, he soon recognized the challenges that many children who want to play face: the cost. Playing competitively is expensive, but Dixon did not want that to be an issue for those determined to be great.  “Playing good competition is almost the only way to go further, to the point of possible college scholarship or draft,” says Dixon. “Plus, over many years I became disheartened to see the number of African Americans playing diminish significantly.” Every year he donates $100,000 to support the cause. The amount is significant to Dixon as it is the very first salary he earned after completing law school.  Growing up, the odds were against him, and he wants to help children who are currently in the position he once was in. Many of the kids who are a part of the organization would not have been able to play baseball had it not been for Dixon’s altruism. He also offers the opportunity for volunteers, whom he directly works with and mentors. The ultimate goal of the organization is not to simply teach children to be great athletes, but great people.  Selflessness is a persistent theme in his life. Whether it’s through his work as a personal injury lawyer or the executive director of a nonprofit organization, Rod Dixon is someone determined to help those who don't have the power or means to help themselves.

Faith Reflections

W O R D S H AV E P O W E R . This statement is often underestimated by many, but the truth of the matter is words really do have power. I am a firm believer that you will have whatever you say you will, whether it be good, bad, ugly or indifferent. This is why I choose my words very carefully. The more I think about it, the more I know that the way we perceive things has a lot to do with what we ultimately say. The Bible teaches that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. And nothing can be in your heart without also being in your mind. This being the case, it may not be a bad idea to take a closer look at the way in which we conceptualize things. Does the glass look half-empty or is it half-full? Is it partly cloudy outside or is it, rather, partly sunny? Get it? These ideas remind me of a childhood poem I remember being taught by my elementary school’s librarian. Penned by Walter D. Wintle and entitled, Thinking (also known as The Man Who Thinks He Can), the first and last stanzas go something like this: If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don't. If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,

J U S T A TO U C H …

A TO U C H O F I N S P I R AT I O N , T H AT I S

It is almost a certain - you won't. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man; But sooner or later the man who wins Is the one who thinks he can! So again, my friends, words have power. I want to challenge you to see the bright side of every situation and think good thoughts, regardless of how bleak things may seem. Then I want you to consider speaking words of life to yourself in whatever situation you may be facing. Finally, I encourage you to be confident in knowing that you will become whatever you think and say. That’s right: Think. Speak. Become. Excited about your destiny, I am,

Healthy Lifestyle 1. BLOOD PRESSURE: All adult males should

receive blood pressure screenings once a year. If your numbers are high, your doctor will probably suggest some dietary and physical activity changes. Listen to your doctor and implement any advice immediately. 2. DIABETES: One-third of Americans have

undiagnosed diabetes, which can lead to stroke and heart disease. If you are genetically predisposed to diabetes or start showing symptoms, ask your doctor for a diabetes test as soon as possible. 3. CHOLESTEROL:  Men under 40 should

receive a cholesterol test at least once every five years. However, those at risk for heart disease, with high levels of bad cholesterol and low levels of good cholesterol or men over 40 should be tested more often. Consult with your doctor to determine the testing frequency that is best for you. 4. PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING: If you are

genetically predisposed to prostate cancer or start showing symptoms, ask your doctor about prostate cancer testing. Otherwise, the recommended age for a male to start having this discussion with his doctor is between 45-50 years old. 5. COLON CANCER SCREENING: Just like with
