ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF, AS I AM AN UNFAMILIAR FACE.

Society of Charlotte

My name is Emily Shea and I am the new editor of South Charlotte Lifestyle Magazine. My first issue with you is all about kids and pets. The sun hasn't set on summer just quite yet, but will soon bid us farewell, making those final days  spent paddle boarding on the lake and evenings spent catching fireflies even more precious. I look back on my summers as a child with a big heart and tears in my eyes as I remember all the fond memories that were created during this season. More often than not, you could find me at the lake in my neighborhood, diving into the crisp water time and time again until my mother plopped a large piece of watermelon in front of my sun-kissed checks and said, "Eat, then you can swim some more." I'd devour the watermelon down to the rind in less the minute, slurping the every last drop of juice that dripped down my face, my only worry being how fast I could get back in that refreshing water. Summer is a truly magical time for children.

Lu l l a by L a n d ARTICLE PATRICE HAWKINS & VALERY HUFFENUS OF DECORATING DEN PHOTOGRAPHY DECORATING DEN INTERIORS PERHAPS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING UNIQUE, SOMETHING THAT ISN’T FOUND IN EVERY STORE OR ON SO MANY SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS. But when you use your imagination for a decorating a kid’s room, the creative possibilities are endless. From custom bedding to hand-painted wall murals, you can dream up some fun and exciting possibilities for your little one’s room that can last well beyond infancy. First, you may want to come up with a theme. If you know it’s a boy and your family loves camping, that’s a great theme. For a girl whose family loves animals, try a bird, butterfly or jungle motif. What do you do if you are waiting to be surprised by your bundle of joy’s gender? How about something geometric that brings in pattern and movement? Or perhaps a theme based on color or a favorite children’s book? You will be amazed at everything that is available today! Designer fabrics are available for customizing your baby’s room. There are hundreds of fabrics that we as interior decorators can offer that can be the room’s focal point and coordinate with existing designs in the home. Wallpaper is big now! Wallpaper and decals can be the design catalyst for an entire children’s room. Custom headboards can also be the spring board for a child’s room design with bold shapes, colors or cut outs. When selecting colors for the nursery, it’s so easy to be tempted by those dreamy, gentle pastels. Remember, however, that babies love black and white, as well as bright primary colors. Of course, you will be spending many hours around the clock in that nursery, so be certain that you, as well as the baby, enjoy the outcome of the room. No matter what themes or colors you choose in the nursery, you will spend some precious moments in there with your little one. These are memories that you’ll treasure for the rest of your life so, above all, put a lot of love into decorating it, and you will have created the perfect lullaby land for your baby. 12

DECORATING YOUR NURSERY + First Things First: Make it easy for you! Consider selecting a room in your home that’s close to your master bedroom. Pay attention to the direction your nursery faces. Sunlight streaming into your child’s room during most of the day or even streetlights beaming into your nursery during the evening might make sleeping a bit difficult. + Have Fun With Colors: While the most popular colors for nurseries are gentle pastels like mint green, sky blue, pinks and creamy yellows, psychologists say children like–and thrive–around primary colors. SAFETY IS A MUST! + Be sure to child proof all locks and outlets. + Anchor furniture so you’re sure it won’t accidentally tip over. + Avoid using space heaters. + Check on “hand me down” products to be sure they haven’t been recalled and are in good, safe working order. CREATE A ROOM YOUR CHILD CAN GROW INTO! Select furniture that will grow with your child. For instance, a baby armoire is a great idea for storing those precious little clothing items. And once your child ages, this same piece of furniture could easily be converted to a computer desk. FURNITURE ARRANGING IS AS EASY AS 1 – 2 – 3! + Don’t place your crib too close a window, try an inside wall or angle instead. + In the beginning, it’s wise to keep your room arrangements simple and functional for YOU! + Select furnishings that are as maintenance free as possible. + Remember, your baby will be growing by leaps and bounds! Don’t forget to look for furniture that will grow as your child grows. + As in all decorating, start with the largest areas first–your walls and floor. + A rocking chair is a great addition to any nursery’s floor plan. + Allow for plenty of light in the room. A ceiling light is not enough, so consider adding lamps at the bedside or on the walls.

native window products. Room darkening treatments topped with a fun, light hearted, thematic top treatment might just help insure a good night’s sleep for your newborn. + Whimsical Walls: Have fun with wallcovering! A light-hearted border applied over neutral walls will give your nursery its own personality. When painting your walls be sure to use washable paint. Try adding a few cheerful pictures to continue your room’s theme. + Fabulous Flooring: From braided area rugs to rugs featuring light hearted colorful patterns, this great and practical accent will not only help warm your nursery area, but will also add that whimsical touch.

Luncheon (private invitation only) and the Ties and Tails Gala. These annual events help spread animal awareness and raise donations to support the organization’s ongoing functions such as pet adoption, spaying, neutering, volunteer coordination and community outreach programs.  If you would like to get involved with helping animals, The Humane Society is actively looking for foster homes for the various cats and dogs they shelter at their facility. Foster families are crucial in the recovery process of injured animals that need some rehabilitation and by opening your home to a pet, you can help save the life of an animal. The Humane Society of Charlotte provides resources and support for its community members who are willing and able to be a part of its outreach program. You can find an online application on their website  as well as  a complete brochure if you are interested in fostering dogs or cats. Those who are not able to foster can still get involved by volunteering their time. The Humane Society asks that volunteers be available for a minimum of  three hours of each month for a period of at least six months. The Humane Society is happy to bring healthy pets and happy owners together through dedication, organization and community involvement.

FAMILY VACATION DESTINATIONS

OCEAN CRUISING

ARTICLE RONI FISHKIN OF MANN TRAVELS

Ocean Cruising is a fabulous option–especially for the

growing number of multi-generational families traveling together. Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Symphony of the Seas, has a Surf Simulator, three watersides, activities and restaurants galore. It also boasts the company’s first Broadway show at sea–Hairspray. Norwegian Cruise Line also christened a ship this spring. Sailing in Alaska and the Caribbean, Bliss features a revolutionary Observation Lounge to soak in every stunning moment, from bald eagles soaring over glaciers to dolphins splashing through turquoise waters.

RIVER CRUISING Even River Cruise sailings, once the domain of an old-

er set, have become a true family affair. These smaller, more intimate experiences now cater to the younger generation with special programs, events and excursions designed especially for little globetrotters.

BEACHES

Slightly closer to home than the rivers of Europe are

the Charleston area beaches. Wild Dunes, Kiawah and Mount Pleasant’s Beach Club at Charleston Harbor all offer family friendly experiences. Even if you can’t get away for long, a quick trip to the beach fosters great family bonding time

DISNEY And finally, no conversation about family vacations is complete without talking about Disney! Disney’s new

Toy Story Land brings some of the iconic and beloved characters from the movie to life. Buzz Lightyear, Woody and the whole toy box gang are the inspirations for the new attraction sure to help young and old make some new family memories.

MORE ACCESS, MORE STORAGE, MORE JOY! ShelfGenie® of Charlotte designs, manufactures and installs custom Glide-Out™ shelving solutions that improve your home and make life easier. We believe comfort is much more than cozy chairs and down feather pillows. For us, and our clients, it’s about being able to access, store, and organize your home. We know it’s frustrating when you can’t find the baking soda or the cookie sheet - or worse, when you can see it but not reach it. But that’s where we come in. ShelfGenie is a nationwide company that has been providing custom solutions to common frustrations for over 20 years. Making our clients’ lives easier is important to us, and we’re thrilled to bring more happiness into their homes along the way.

ACCESSIBILITY

Your kitchen should make you happy. It shouldn’t be frustrating to make new recipes or spur-of-the-moment cupcakes, or to host unforgettable dinner parties. Streamline your space and improve access - no more awkward bending and twisting.

STORAGE

Making a sandwich should be easy. But if you can’t see the peanut butter, reach the jelly, or grab the bread without knocking things over, it’s just not. Transform your pantry and increase storage space by up to 50%.

ORGANIZATION

Just because your bathroom has a garden tub doesn’t mean it’s helping you refresh. With clutter around, it’s hard to unwind - let alone find the soap. At ShelfGenie, we know organization makes “me time” better. So relax.

$200 OFF YOUR ORDER * *Applies to purchases of 6 or more Classic or Designer Glide-Out™ shelves.
