MORE ACCESS, MORE STORAGE, MORE JOY! ShelfGenie® of Charlotte designs, manufactures and installs custom Glide-Out™ shelving solutions that improve your home and make life easier. We believe comfort is much more than cozy chairs and down feather pillows. For us, and our clients, it’s about being able to access, store, and organize your home. We know it’s frustrating when you can’t find the baking soda or the cookie sheet - or worse, when you can see it but not reach it. But that’s where we come in. ShelfGenie is a nationwide company that has been providing custom solutions to common frustrations for over 20 years. Making our clients’ lives easier is important to us, and we’re thrilled to bring more happiness into their homes along the way.

ACCESSIBILITY

Your kitchen should make you happy. It shouldn’t be frustrating to make new recipes or spur-of-the-moment cupcakes, or to host unforgettable dinner parties. Streamline your space and improve access - no more awkward bending and twisting.

STORAGE

Making a sandwich should be easy. But if you can’t see the peanut butter, reach the jelly, or grab the bread without knocking things over, it’s just not. Transform your pantry and increase storage space by up to 50%.

ORGANIZATION

Just because your bathroom has a garden tub doesn’t mean it’s helping you refresh. With clutter around, it’s hard to unwind - let alone find the soap. At ShelfGenie, we know organization makes “me time” better. So relax.

Al Fresco PATIO SEASON IS OFFICIALLY UPON US! HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED. ARTICLE PATRICE HAWKINS & VALERY HUFFENUS OF DECORATING DEN PHOTOGRAPHY DECORATING DEN INTERIORS

COME UP WITH A PATIO PURPOSE. What do you want to get out of your patio this year? Do you envision a cozy personal retreat or

an

entertainment

space?

Think about how you want to use your backyard and put your plans on paper—creating a blueprint, if you will. Take, for example, this plush patio set-up. When Decorating Den’s designers sat down with the client, they had one purpose in mind: entertainment. From there, the choices were easy: an expansive pool, plenty of seating for guests, and large spaces divided into smaller “rooms” for entertaining. 14

South Charlotte Lifestyle | July 2018

2

CHOOSE YOUR FOCAL POINT. If you’re having trouble coming up with a design theme or deciding how you’ll use your patio, pick a focal point and let the creative ideas flow from there. Think of it as the heart of your outdoor space. Perhaps it’s a bird bath, potted plant, fire pit or an outdoor kitchen and bar. Choosing one beautiful statement piece might be all you need to get the creative juices flowing. The focal point and purpose of this backyard is clearly the pool! Situated at the heart of the design, furniture is arranged to radiate out from the pool and reflects its cerulean waters with sky blue accents.

CONSIDER YOUR FURNITURE OPTIONS. Though your patio is like an extension of your home, it’s important to remember that, unlike the other rooms in your house, this space is constantly exposed to the elements! When picking out your furniture, consider what is hardy enough to stand the test of time.  For this patio, Decorating Den chose furniture in outdoor woven wicker that will stand up against the sun’s harsh rays. Cushions are covered in performance outdoor fabrics in shades of taupe that match the stone and stucco of the home’s exterior, accented with neutral but eye-catching blues and grays.  If you want a second opinion on any of your ideas, just contact us! We will come to your home for a free consultation to evaluate your patio space and design ideas and offer some tips and tricks to create your backyard oasis with ease.

SUMMER SIPPERS

DRINK IN THE VIEW (AND COCKTAILS) AT FAHRENHEIT

24

South Charlotte Lifestyle | July 2018

CHARLOTTE IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY AT ANY ANGLE, WITH

SARAH'S MULE

SKY-TICKLING ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS PAIRED WITH HUMBLE ROWS OF OAKS AND SYCAMORES, BUT HER BEST ANGLE SITS 21 STORIES HIGH. From the sweeping patio of Fahrenheit, the Queen City sprawls out in panoramic abundance. It’s not just the view that draws guests to the downtown favorite, but a punchy menu, too. The combination of the two make Fahrenheit the perfect place to kick back this summer, cocktail in hand.  “Many of the cocktails on this particular menu were inspired by summers in Charlotte,” says Jordan Potter, head mixologist. “The warmer weather gets the blood flowing and people become more apt to go out, have a drink, and socialize with friends and fellow patrons. These cocktails are an attempt to capture that brightness and laid-back attitude of summer.  They are (mostly) easy-drinking, a touch sweet, and are all made to be very refreshing—especially when being enjoyed on our rooftop!” Take, for example, Sarah’s Mule, made with a touch of Lemon-Lavender SUM Bucha, brewed by fellow employee and SUM Bucha entrepreneur Sarah North (see sidebar). “I wanted the tartness or her SUM Bucha to counter the sweetness of a cocktail,” explains Potter of his decision to add kombucha to the cocktail. “Mules have become very popular, but are usually on the sweeter side due to the ginger beer. So it made sense to make a variation of a Moscow Mule with her summery Lavender Lemonade SUM Bucha, and call it Sarah’s Mule!” Even with the breadth of flavors and ingredients, these cocktails are all delightfully simple. “A lot of places are becoming more and more technical with their drink recipes, and while our cocktails require quite a bit of bar knowledge and skill, none of them require ten steps and none of them take five minutes to create,” Potter adds. That’s why these

ORANGE BLOSSOM

are the perfect summer sippers to try at home (view not included). ALL ABOUT 'BUCH Kombucha, a fizzy, fermented tea, is gaining lots of nods on the gut health circuit these days. Combine that with our love for local products, and SUM Bucha is our new favorite refreshment. Sarah North tells us about her venture:  SUM Bucha is a craft, micro-brewed kombucha company ran by Alex North (my husband) and myself. We use a Yerba Mate and black tea blend (organic and fair trade teas only) for our base tea instead of the traditional black or green teas. This gives ours a more smooth flavor profile and the added health benefits of Yerba Mate: vitamins and minerals such as B Vitamins, manganese, zinc and calcium, and antioxidants. We also source the best ingredients we can find, always sourcing local and organic as much as possible, which is another reason our kombucha tastes so good!  We create proprietary formulas that not only taste great but have specific purposes as well; for instance, the Lavender Lemonade flavor, which is the flavor currently on tap at Fahrenheit and used in our mule, has lavender, chamomile, lemon and nettle. Nettle is an herb that grows abundantly in this region and is a natural anti-histamine,

LOCALLY OWNED

A Veteran’s Affair PHOTOGRAPHY DISCOVER LOVE STUDIOS

THERE ARE 76 NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL MANAGING PARTNERS; ONE OF THEM IS A VETERAN. Meet Richard Worrell. As a member of the United States Marine Corps, Worrell was based in North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune, a road trip away from his hometown of Charlotte. When Worrell left the service, he knew he wanted to return to the Queen City, and found himself uniquely qualified for the realm of financial services and financial planning.  As a managing partner, Worrell is able to bring other veterans into the business, as well, and makes a point of doing so: last year alone they hired 17 veterans, their top three new advisors are former military, and six West Point graduates have a position in the Charlotte firm. Veterans, Worrell notes, are special candidates because they garner a higher level of trust and integrity, not to mention the fortitude and tenacity gleaned from their time in the service.  “Because of how challenging our business is to start, they have the ability to persevere over whatever road blocks are there. They also work very well as a team, so that’s really important in terms of their coachability,” he points out. “The intangibles they learn in the military translate very well.” It’s not just financial services where veterans flourish, he says, but all businesses. “They learn servant leadership; their job is to serve others, and whatever career they’re going to go into, serving others is such an important aspect of it.”

FAMILY IS ONE OF OUR CORE VALUES, AND IT’S SO GREAT TO HELP VETERANS GROW THEIR CAREER AFTER THE MILITARY AND BE A PART OF OUR FAMILY AT NORTHWESTERN. 28

South Charlotte Lifestyle | July 2018

Through his position at Northwestern Mutual, as well as volunteering with Veterans Bridge Home, Worrell helps veterans navigate the tricky waters of post-military life and find a new place in the American fabric as civilians.

SUMMER IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ARTICLE RONI FISHKIN

IT’S NOT A FROZEN TUNDRA OR STARK VISTA YOU’LL FIND IN A FAR-NORTH SUMMER, BUT A LANDSCAPE OF RICH WILDLIFE AND VERDANT PANORAMAS BEGGING FOR EXPLORATION. As the largest and most sparsely populated U.S. state, Alaska is known for its diverse terrain of open spaces, mountains, and forests with abundant wildlife and interesting small towns. The massive Denali National Park is home to Denali (formerly called Mount McKinley), North America’s highest peak. Alaska and everything surrounding it always ranks high on travelers’ bucket lists. Whether it’s a cruise or a landbased experience to the Last Frontier, there are vacation itineraries to please every traveler and every budget. If you want the best of both worlds, consider riding the rails through the Alaskan and Canadian wilds. You’ll be able to scale the sides of mountains and weave alongside steep canyons, all without having to worry about driving your own car or packing the right hiking shoes. A luxury rail experience through the Canadian Rockies transports you with the perfect balance of riveting excitement and total relaxation. Rocky Mountaineer offers four distinct routes that take you from the glittering oceans and coastal cities to the untamed wilderness of the Pacific Northwest in unparalleled style. Whether you have two days or 21, Rocky Mountaineer has an iconic journey for exploring Vancouver, Whistler, Calgary, Banff and Lake Louise, or the Alaskan cities of Ketchikan, Skagway, and Juneau. Travelers are treated to impeccable service, gourmet meals, and world class accommodations as they take in the magnificent sights Roni Fishkin is the Marketing Director of Mann Travels, which, with local ownership in Charlotte, has been serving travelers with personalized service for more than 35 years.  800-343-MANN (6266) | MannTravels.com 34
