I SINCERELY HOPE YOU BROUGHT YOUR APPETITE FOR THIS ISSUE. From foodie getaways to a contemporary sushi bar right in our very backyard, this issue brings the heat (to the kitchen). Jokes aside, the October issue is dedicated to the delicious tastes–savory, sweet and everything in between–in our wonderful community. It has been such a joy working with wonderful restauranteurs, chefs and creative minds to craft  this issue. Our team is  especially excited to bring you  a feature about O-Ku, a South End sushi bar that puts an innovative twist on traditional Asian dishes and offers a darn good cocktail list (page 18). Without giving too much away, the restaurant's avant-garde style is present in both of their flawlessly crafted menu items and their marvelous dining room.  This month  we also bring you two travel features. One is dedicated to a  seaside town  that is just too perfect too be disliked (page 14), while the other is about a variety of foodie destinations (page 24). (If you haven't heard of chocotourism, all of your dessert dreams are about to come true.)

MORE ACCESS, MORE STORAGE, MORE JOY! ShelfGenie® of Charlotte designs, manufactures and installs custom Glide-Out™ shelving solutions that improve your home and make life easier. We believe comfort is much more than cozy chairs and down feather pillows. For us, and our clients, it’s about being able to access, store, and organize your home. We know it’s frustrating when you can’t find the baking soda or the cookie sheet - or worse, when you can see it but not reach it. But that’s where we come in. ShelfGenie is a nationwide company that has been providing custom solutions to common frustrations for over 20 years. Making our clients’ lives easier is important to us, and we’re thrilled to bring more happiness into their homes along the way.

ACCESSIBILITY

Your kitchen should make you happy. It shouldn’t be frustrating to make new recipes or spur-of-the-moment cupcakes, or to host unforgettable dinner parties. Streamline your space and improve access - no more awkward bending and twisting.

STORAGE

Making a sandwich should be easy. But if you can’t see the peanut butter, reach the jelly, or grab the bread without knocking things over, it’s just not. Transform your pantry and increase storage space by up to 50%.

ORGANIZATION

Just because your bathroom has a garden tub doesn’t mean it’s helping you refresh. With clutter around, it’s hard to unwind - let alone find the soap. At ShelfGenie, we know organization makes “me time” better. So relax.

$200 OFF YOUR ORDER * *Applies to purchases of 6 or more Classic or Designer Glide-Out™ shelves.

THE SOUTH END SUSHI BAR PUTS AN INNOVATIVE TOUCH ON TRADITIONAL ASAIN CUISINE

18

South Charlotte Lifestyle | October 2018

FROM A DIVINE COCKTAIL LIST TO SUSHI THAT IS CRAFTED USING ONLY THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS, SOUTH END'S O-KU SUSHI BAR CELEBRATES  AUTHENTIC ASIAN CUISINE WITH A CONTEMPORARY TWIST. With sister restaurants in Charleston, Atlanta and Washington D.C., O-Ku Charlotte is the luxury franchise's fourth location. The dining area features an upscale, yet comfortable vibe with vibrant energy that flows throughout the space. While O-Ku is  mainly applauded  for its fresh sushi that is often sourced from fish markets in Hawaii, Tokyo and local Carolina purveyors, the restaurant’s commitment to the overall experience is what truly makes O-Ku unique. Their team is constantly focused on creating a memorable dining experience for their guests, insuring that everything from their hospitality to their high-quality dishes and beverage items are as close to perfect as humanly possible. Redolent of traditional Japanese culture, O-Ku’s menu is made up of signature starters and contemporary Japanese entrees along with traditional sushi. It features unique ingredients paired with sophisticated presentations, and each dish provides a fresh and innovative take on traditional Japanese sushi and cuisine. You can't go wrong with the South End Shrimp, Lobster Temaki or the Potato Roll, but everything is delicious.

TRAVEL DESTINATION

TRAVELERS WHO ARE, QUITE LITERALLY, HUNGRY FOR GREAT EXPERIENCES HAVE A GROWING NUMBER OF CHOICES FOR CULINARY ADVENTURE. Travel suppliers are busy creating unique and inspiring opportunities for the more than 75% of us who say food and wine are an important component of travel. Here is just a small “taste” of some of the ways to combine a love for travel, culture and cuisine: 1. Almost every trip to Italy is a foodie fantasy come true. It is almost impossible to avoid the legendary pasta, pizza, parmesan and prosecco. The Tuscany region is filled with wineries and truffle farms, the Parma region is famous for it’s Parmigiano-Reggiano and Umbria is known for black truffles and cured meats. You can arrange to have a traditional Italian cooking class, a visit to a local farm or even a gelato tasting.

eries. A food tour of the city provides a glimpse into the buzzing restaurants and eclectic bars serving craft beers with a kiwi twist. 3. If you love the crisp scent of lemongrass and flavorful curry, then a vacation in Thailand is perfect. The bustling spice market, exotic food stalls and fine dining all combine to pack your vacation with an authentic thai taste. Eat your way through Bangkok, a city packed with some of the most diverse gastronomic experiences in the world and known as the foodie capital of Southeast Asia. 4. Finally, the sweet new trend of Chocotourism (yes, its really a thing) brings vacationers up close and personal with their favorite dessert. Just like a winery tour, chocolate factories in Switzerland or cacao bean farms in Costa Rica provide tours. There are museums devoted to chocolate in both Cologne, Germany and Barcelona, Spain and Paris celebrates the sweet confection with an annual chocolate festival every October.
