TRUCKER HATS. Puffy coats. Sport sandals. Duck boots. Yoga pants. Pom beanies. Plaid. More plaid. All sound familiar? Valley style just wouldn’t be valley style without ‘em. Although locals do find plenty of reasons to clean up and don dressier apparel, our everyday street style is a mash-up of athletic gear, casual comfort, and a quirkiness all our own. In the following pages, Roaring Fork Lifestyle checks in with several locals who are energizing the look of the valley. You’ll meet footwear gurus, a skilled hairstylist, a clothing designer, and an artist whose work spurs environmental awareness through hats, bags, and other accessories. The through-line among their stories? That when it comes to what valley residents wear, we want things that can do double duty. Our look is defined by something that’s more than the sum of its parts; we’re a little function, a little fashion, and a lot of mountain flair tying things together. Picture the fresh-from-hiking Carbondale girl with loose braids and a sun hat, the Glenwood office guy in dress pants and a Patagonia puffer, the Basalt woman strolling

CARBONDALE PAINTER SARAH UHL INVITES DISCUSSION THROUGH WEARABLE ART ARTICLE GENEVIÈVE JOËLLE VILLAMIZAR PHOTOGRAPHY ESTATEPHOTOVIDEO.COM - KIT MITCHELL

e c n a t s b Su

LIKE MANY BEHIND BARS, SARAH UHL BIDES HER TIME SEEKING. She pursues the answers to Big Questions, finds moments of geological ecstasy, and relishes opportunities for unadulterated joy. As an artist, she documents all of these with whimsical exaltation. Uhl works out of the historic Carbondale jail, where she’s created a stylish, welcoming studio. Stacks of originals, prints, cards, brushes, paints, and product are a colorful contrast to dusty old brick walls; her string lights and lo-fi add warmth to a diggable scene. Rigorous discipline and the creative life are evident. The drive Uhl once applied as a world champion bike racer has shifted gears; nowadays she’s finding balance and purpose through art and environmental conservation work. “I think right now, in the outdoor industry, I have a really great opportunity to develop a career as a storyteller with art as my primary message," she says. "Brands are  realizing how art can crack people open and invite curiosity.” Her work is everywhere, from community walls to ads to apparel. ON STYLE AND MOTIVATION “When I think about style, I think about the causes we associate ourselves with and the beat of the drum we march to. So, that’s how I think about my art: What do I want to say to the world? And what’s the story behind the way it looks? The way it looks is just a lure into a bigger question, curiosity, or consciousness,” Uhl says. “Everything I do is related to conservation—whether it’s public land conservation, water conservation or just the joy we can find in nature. So I hope that my art, whether it’s a trucker hat or a painting, is another in-road for people to spend more time outside.” CONTINUED >

ON COLLABS “I’ve not done too much merchandise because I like to tell stories more so than sell goods,” Uhl reveals. “But when I have partnered up to [develop] wearable items, I have to resonate really well with who they are and what they’re about, as well.” Of the women’s brand Coalition Snow, which approached Uhl to develop topsheets for their premier skis, she says that “seeing my artwork leave the computer screen or a piece of paper—I love the energy of my work taking on these new shapes and being carried into the world on functional goods.” Free Range Equipment crafts sport-specific, streamlined packs. Uhl is one of several mountain artists with whom founder Tosch Roy has collaborated. “I really like working with him. He’s from Bend, Oregon. He dropped out of college and started a sewing company,” she says. “He’s really connected in Bend, and what he’s done has created a real community of mountain-themed artists. We all then find out about each other. It’s sort of like a weird online club through social media...community, versus competition.” As a storyteller, stories are important to Uhl and working with Blowfish Hats speaks to that. With origins in the Roaring Fork Valley, Blowfish wants “hats to connect people to each other and to the wild world around them,” says owner-partner, Erin Erickson. Uhl often encounters her own artwork on Blowfish trucker hats throughout the valley and backcountry. “It happens quite a bit and it’s always a fun experience of telling people ‘Hey, I made your hat, I painted that,’” Uhl says. “I enjoy taking those opportunities because they’re chances to make the world feel smaller and more personal.” HER CURRENT PASSION? A watercolor map of the Roaring Fork watershed! “This was a really special project because it’s a study of my own back yard,” Uhl notes. “My task was to glorify our watershed, and articulate what a watershed is.” The artist’s original will hang in Basalt’s new Roaring Fork Conservancy River Center, where prints are also available for purchase. Visit  SarahUhl.com  to learn more about her artwork and environmental advocacy—and to snag a trucker hat.

BY O 2 A S P E N 24

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | September 2018

BUSINESS OWNER, MOTHER OF TWINS, FITNESS QUEEN, CLOTHING DESIGNER: BRITTANY VAN DOMELEN IS DEFINED BY MANY ROLES. The Basalt native and owner of the popular upvalley yoga/pilates studio O2 Aspen seems to be one of the lucky locals who’s figured out how to “have it all,” balancing life’s demands like a pro while still reserving a little space to dream up future goals and endeavors. Long before purchasing O2 from its previous owner in 2015, Van Domelen spent her formative years as an active midvalley kid. She eventually left Colorado for New York City (and a job in product development for the Home Shopping Network), but has since returned to the valley full-time. “When I was younger I skied, played sports, and was really active,” Van Domelen recalls. “It was an incredibly healthy way to grow up, which is why my husband and I decided to move back for our children. Now as an adult here I get to do all the things I did back then, plus yoga, pilates, and hiking. Those are all a huge part of life.” As a typical active local herself, Van Domelen understands that Roaring Fork Valley women rarely engage in just one sport or physical activity. With this in mind she recently launched Artem  by O2 Aspen, a line of luxury activewear essentials designed for women who bounce between multiple workouts in a given day. “The transition of sport to sport is huge, so I wanted to create pieces that work for different activities,” she explains. “For example, a lot of people do a hike and then come to yoga. One great feature of our leggings are pockets, so you can carry your phone while hiking but they won’t get in the way of your yoga positions.” CONTINUED >

In addition to Artem’s current collection of leggings and sport bras, Van Domelen will soon release new base layers that can transition from skiing to yoga and back again. She’s also busy building her e-commerce presence at O2Aspen.com, and preparing for the December launch of a second website, O2Life.com, which will feature lifestyle content and shopping opportunities. Van Domelen says that these new ventures, coupled with O2’s recent relocation to Aspen’s downtown core, have helped truly make the business her own. “I bought a business that I didn’t start, but that I felt was an amazing idea,” she says. “I love our model—people walk through the door for so many reasons, but they walk through retail first so they end up shopping. In our new location, walk-in traffic has exploded. My brand is in our top five in sales. Now this feels like my baby, like it’s really mine.”

LANCE MICHAEL SALON OWNER LANCE DIEHL TALKS MEN'S HAIRCARE AND STYLE

ARTICLE CAITLIN CAUSEY | PHOTOGRAPHY ESTATEPHOTOVIDEO.COM - KIT MITCHELL ACCORDING TO LANCE DIEHL, INDIVIDUALITY IS THE NAME OF THE HAIR GAME FOR MEN IN THE VALLEY. As the owner of Lance Michael Salon in Glenwood Springs he’s spent almost two years helping locals discover what styles best suit their unique tastes and features. “Recently there’s been a shift toward individuality. For men especially, it’s about figuring out what’s going to work for that particular guy—and taking lifestyle, face shape, hair type, and other factors into consideration,” Diehl says. “It’s not just about trends.”

30

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | September 2018

Diehl originally hails from Iowa, where he began his career in Des Moines at a busy upscale salon owned by prominent stylist and entrepreneur China Wong. “She kind of took me under her wing,” he recalls of his early years after finishing beauty school. “I was so fortunate to work with someone who was building her own business. I got to be in the trenches with her, and see and learn what it looks like to start a business and grow it into something much bigger.” Diehl worked closely with his mentor for a decade, becoming Aveda certified and later specializing in color. He was also part of an editorial team that developed their own collections twice a year, even taking their art to competitions such as the North American Hairstyling Awards. When Diehl relocated to Colorado a few years ago, he hoped to continue a similar professional path. After getting a feel for several area salons by ‘secret shopping’ as a client, he didn’t quite find what he was truly looking for in a workplace. “I definitely found some great places, but not what I came from and had a vision for,” Diehl says. “I hadn’t initially planned on opening my own salon right away, but after visiting the others I felt like there was a missing puzzle piece that I could offer in the valley. So that led me to just pulling the trigger and doing my own thing.” Lance Michael Salon opened in November 2016, and within months Diehl had hired three additional stylists to work with him. He also recently hired a guest relations director to help keep the business running smoothly. Tucked away at 715 Grand Avenue in the alley beside Smoke Modern Barbeque, the salon occupies a quiet, charming corner of downtown Glenwood’s bustling commercial district. Diehl and his crew offer a menu of hair services for both women and men; he says that working with the latter can be both challenging and rewarding.

“It’s great to have more variety so I love having male clients. It can be a lot of opposites here—a lot of men have long unkempt styles while others do really tailored looks. We’re a little away from the mainstream, which can be a good thing, so guys just have the mindset of what they like and know,” he observes. And as for facial hair? “So many men wear full beards here,” Diehl adds. “We do beard trims, shaping, and grooming at the salon. Beards can really alter your face shape if you don’t keep them tight and shaped to accentuate your best features.” If he could offer one tip to every guy in the valley, Diehl would sum it up in a word: Consistency. “I wish men would stay more consistent in their routines,” he says with a laugh. “Keeping their styles up, and keeping facial hair groomed and tailored. And also being more open to working with product. Men would be amazed at the difference this makes for their appearance.” THE ARTIST | Lance Diehl CONTACT | 970.274.9626 FOLLOW | Lance Michael Salon on Facebook and Instagram

MIDLAND SHOE: COMFORT IS KING As a fixture of downtown Basalt since 1993, Midland Shoe has spent the past 25 years providing valley residents with comfortable, stylish footwear and expert advice on getting the perfect fit. Most valley residents readily admit that local footwear fashion errs on the side of casual, but most still want something that meets both durability needs and a moderate style quotient. “Shoe trends in the Roaring Fork Valley have never really been a priority for ‘Mountain Girl’ sensibilities,” says shop owner Tracy Bennett. “Yes, there are the occasional galas and fundraisers for high heels or platforms, but there has never been a strong demand for those styles in our Rocky Mountain culture.” Translation: no one’s out there hitting Mushroom Rock or Basalt Mountain in Jimmy Choos. Bennett should know; for decades she’s been watching what actually sells, and she naturally stocks what her customers return for year after year. “In everyday life, what is it that a ‘Mountain Girl’ really needs? A comfortable, cute pair of sneakers or booties,” she adds. “Finally, the fashion world has caught up with and embraced what us local gals have always known: that comfort is king.” Hush Puppies, Bennett notes, is a “fun iconic brand that’s making a comeback.” The company is known for producing stylish, foot-friendly shoes appropriate for a range of activities and settings, and it’s one brand of dozens that Midland Shoe carries. “Their Mazin Cayto bootie is a particular style that sells really well, and it’s perfect for our urban-mountain lifestyle.” We asked Bennett why this shoe, or any great women’s shoe, works so well:

34

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | September 2018

COLOR + “Color. Every year there are certain color trends that the industry leans toward (it was Blush for spring/summer 2018), but black and brown always reign as the top colors of the shoe world.”

FOR THE LADIES + MATERIAL “High-quality materials like leather or vegan alternatives that are breathable and water resistant are key. We also sell products to help improve a shoe’s water resistance.”

SUPPORT + “Great arch and metatarsal (under ball of foot) support as well as cushioning, which manufacturers are getting better at providing.”

“Oblique, round, or square toe box; lace-up or slide-on...the right cut is so important. A nice roomy toe box and a not-so-high heel (quarter inch or so) from the heel down to toe box seems to be the sweet spot for most women.”

5028: CLASSIC WITH A TWIST Do you know your shoe designer? Here in the Roaring Fork Valley, you can. Carbondale resident Angilina Taylor had been working in the footwear industry for some 15 years when  in October 2017 she and her husband Mike launched 5028, their direct-to-consumer shoe brand featuring

wearable, high-quality designs and materials. “We offer classic styles with a modern twist,” Taylor says. “Our approach is to offer unique, limited edition, artisan, small-batch products that are fun for our customers to wear.” Taylor designs all of 5028’s shoes. To create the brand’s top-notch men’s and women’s lines she taps not only her extensive shoe-world experience but the collaborative creativity she fosters between the company and its manufacturing partners in Spain and Portugal. Taylor recalls that while working there years ago, she was impressed with the factories’ attention to detail and ability to make better, smaller quantities of product. “They just have a knack for the craft of footwear,” she says. “I thought, how can we bring this to the U.S.? It’s not mass-market, but there’s definitely a desire for this kind of shoe.” And how it all works? Customers hop onto WeAre5028.com to browse a selection of

Taylor’s exclusive designs; then, they can pledge to purchase styles they want. Taylor sends an order overseas, and voila: The shoes are produced according to demand. “This helps eliminate a lot of waste,” she says. “We aren’t making more than we need.” In regard to men’s footwear, Taylor says that options in the valley are often limited to either athletic shoes or lower-quality fashions from big-box retailers. “Even if you’re a ‘t-shirt and jeans’ guy, a pair of shoes with a touch of flair can say a

lot about your presence,” Taylor explains. “So we do fun prints on the inside, fun linings, nice burnished leathers with a worn look, and other details.” Taylor also has a few other tips on what a great men’s shoe should have:

36

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | September 2018

FOR THE MEN

5028 owners Angilina and Mike Taylor.

LEATHER + “Leathers that are rich in character and quality are very important. The leather used on our SweetWater is deeply pigmented and waxed, creating a luxurious handfeel and stand-out look.”

+ DETAILS “For a man, subtle detail says a lot. Unique laces, printed linings, designer footbeds, and discoverable treatments really make the man’s shoe. And if he peekaboos some funky matching socks? Bonus points!”

STYLE + “Casual is hip. The evolution of what is now considered ‘dress’ has a much broader spectrum. The last and the sole of our SweetWater provide the comfort of a sneaker while still maintaining a refined look.”

“Versatility is huge. Many of our shoes are appropriate for a variety of occasions; they can dress up a casual outfit, or add a little funk to a suit. Let’s face it, men don’t own as many shoes as women do so we want our guys to have options.”
