WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A WOMAN IN 2018? It’s a question that can feel like a trick, because it’s one that has multiple, often contradictory answers. Although it’s up to each individual woman to determine her own personal truth, I believe that there are significant commonalities binding us together even if we can’t always see them. No matter how different our chosen paths may seem, some things about us women will always remain true. Not the least of these is the power we possess when we lift each other up. In this issue of Roaring Fork Lifestyle, you’ll meet seven local women who are doing just that: lifting, helping, and inspiring others. Kenia Pinela is setting an example for the students she coaches, Leticia Ingram is building bridges between young people of different backgrounds, Kim Martin is empowering new mothers with breastfeeding knowledge, Angie Anderson is leading her all-female team to support local business owners, Lindsay Halsey and Lori Calcott are challenging the status

ARCHITECTURE

OF ART &

OPEN HOUSE

ARTICLE OLIVIA EMERY PHOTOGRAPHY ESTATEPHOTOVIDEO.COM - KIT MITCHELL

LET’S BE HONEST: NO ARCHITECT LIKES HOA DESIGN GUIDELINES. However, when my friend and client Marcia Weese bought a lot in a Carbondale sub-division, I knew that her aesthetic as an artist and designer meant that we would still have some fun working on it together. Designing the house was a true collaboration. Marcia began with the vision of an open common room flanked by bedrooms on either side. I expanded this idea with two wings off the common room—one for the master suite and the second for guest rooms and an artist’s studio. This strategy allows Marcia to occupy a smaller portion of the house and not feel that half of it is empty, but more importantly, the wings create outdoor space that is welcoming at the entry while private in the back. Because I’m the daughter of a landscape architect, I’m always thinking about gardens; in our climate, there is nothing better than a southeast-facing terrace flowing directly out of the house. In this design, both the living room and master bedroom open directly onto such a space. Glazing that goes all the way to the floor reinforces the outdoor connection. Overall, the house is composed of two gabled volumes connected by a low, glazed entry with slender steel columns and a yellow door. To produce the best thermal envelope possible and shorten construction time, we used structural insulated panel (SIP) construction and pre-manufactured CONTINUED >

roof trusses. Both systems served our vision of simple shapes and a minimalist interior. With a variety of truss profiles, each bedroom has its own gabled ceiling, painted different colors. The large volume of the main room suits Marcia’s artwork, and the walls and ceilings are smooth white plaster, a backdrop for the art and furniture. A window seat alcove, bookshelves, a fireplace, and a soffit over the kitchen with a deeply recessed window vary the space and create opportunities for accent colors and materials. Warm, polished concrete floors are unfazed by Lola, the dog, and are a handsome surface for the rugs Marcia designs under Weese Rugs. I loved working with a designer on her home. Of course, Marcia and I wrangled over some decisions: I drew nine-foot walls, Marcia wanted ten; she was right. She wanted a 10-foot window in her bedroom, I said she would overheat; I was right. But in the end, we were both happy with the design and remain good friends. What more could you ask? Olivia Emery is a co-founder of Carbondale's A4 Architects.

AH, THE CRYSTAL RIVER VALLEY: CLOSE ENOUGH FOR A LAST-MINUTE GETAWAY, YET FAR ENOUGH FOR REAL ADVENTURE AND RELAXATION. For years, the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway (aka Highway 133) has led locals into the high-country wonderland south of Carbondale and beckoned us to stay awhile. The month of May ushers in the beginning of the area's best time to visit, when Redstone and Marble come alive with the bustle and beauty of the warm season. After participating in local races growing up, she turned professional at age 20. Now 28, McKennis competes around the globe but still calls New Castle home. Not-so-fun fact: According to recent studies, less than one in five U.S. tech startups are created by women. This means that Lindsay Halsey and Lori Calcott, founding partners of WebShine and WP SEO Hub, are blazing trails in both the valley and the nation. The women created the companies to help local businesses drive more website traffic, and are now reaching clients across the country. “It has been incredibly rewarding to start our own business,” Halsey says. “We’re in the thick of startup mode, still evolving, but we’ve built a strong and mighty team here in Basalt.”

APPLE TART INGREDIENTS + 12-inch pie crusts + 1⁄2 cup sugar + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour + 4 cups apples, chopped and peeled + 2 tablespoons sugar + 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg + 1 tablespoon butter DIRECTIONS 01 Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 02 Mix 1/2 cup sugar and the flour in large bowl. Stir in apples. The sugar-flour mixture will not all stick to the apples; that's OK. 03 Spread the apple mixture uniformly from the center of the dough circle to within 2 inches of edge. Fold edge of dough over apple mixture; crimp edge of dough slightly. 04 Mix 2 tablespoons sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon; sprinkle over apples and dough. 05 Cut 1 tablespoon butter into 5 or 6 small pieces; spread on top of the apples. 06 Bake 27 to 32 minutes or until crust is golden brown. 07 Cut into wedges. Serve warm drizzled with caramel topping.

ROSES GROW WILD IN COLORADO AND ARE WELL ADAPTED TO OUR SOIL AND WEATHER. Although the wild rose can be

TIPS FOR GROWING BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS AT HOME ARTICLE LYNN DWYER

extremely invasive and is not recommended for the home gardener, cultivars grow very well here and many bloom throughout the summer. Tree roses, climbers, hardy shrubs, hybrid teas: Many of these beautiful roses are grafted onto hardy rootstock for use in local gardens. It is important to note the graft junction when planting (usually a swollen area on the stem)—this should not be buried underground. Unless they are bare root, wait until after Mother’s Day to plant roses. If the temperature drops too low, tender shoots may freeze. This year Dwyer Greens brought in 130 roses on March 12, potted them up the same day, and placed them in a greenhouse to root in. Temperatures were kept around 45 degrees at night so as not to ‘push’ them too fast. They are grown cool for about a month, but once they have broken dormancy and started to grow, the greenhouse temperature is raised to 65 degrees at night. When planting roses be sure to amend your soil with high-quality compost. The hole you dig for your roses should be twice as wide as the root ball, but at the same depth. And don’t forget: Roses like to be fed! They produce more blooms with regular feeding. Lynn Dwyer is the former owner of Dwyer Greens and Flowers in New Castle, which she and her husband Pat recently sold after serving the community for nearly 20 years. Lynn remains on-site to assist new owners Brett and Anne Folske.

Roaring Fork Lifestyle | May 2018

We would like to let everyone know about Roaring Fork Lifestyle Magazine. It is a great source of information for our little, unique valley. We have been placing an ad with Roaring Fork Lifestyle for about a year. Rick French has been great. He helped us to see how we should be using our ad to its fullest extent. He is available to help and guide you. We were novices when it ca me to knowing how to design an ad and Rick gave us ideas how to keep changing our ads to get reader’s attention. The ad designers are great helping bring your ad to vision. These ads have helped us improve our customer base by almost 15 percent. If you are looking for a good way to get local people in your place, Roaring Fork Lifestyle is a great publication to help you.

Sincerely,
