Loads of fresh fruit and warm biscuits bookended a breakfast buffet with fresh ground coffee from sponsor, Georgia’s own small farmer coffee roaster, Cafe Campesino, served piping hot all day. On one of the many “field trips” offered, I visited the bucolic Bella Luna Sheep & Wool Co. in Tignall, Georgia. While the others talked about best practices for raising sheep (“I love birthing lambs. I get right up there and bring that baby into the world…”) I breathed in the damp mossy air and decided I needed to get out of the city and live on a farm. These people touch the earth and the earth touches them every single day. At Happy Wife Farm in Modoc, S.C., a school bus has been repurposed into a chicken coop, a moveable

A FAMILY TRIP TO ORLANDO DOESN'T NEED TO BE TIRING - HERE'S HOW.
Perimeter North Lifestyle | April 2018
IF YOUR FAMILY IS ANYTHING LIKE MINE, GOING TO ORLANDO, FLORIDA, DOESN’T ALWAYS SPELL “RELAXING.” It’s normally days of non-stop, sunrise to past sunset, go go go to Disney, Universal, and all the numerous family attractions. And although it’s fun, and filled with a memory-making opportunities, well… it’s a whirlwind that sometimes leaves me more tired than when we arrived. So, when I decided to take my 9-year-old son to Orlando recently, I vowed this time we’d figure out how to combine the relaxation I was craving with the fun he was dreaming of. If you’re looking to find a little ahhhh in your Orlando vacation, pick a resort that has something for everyone. We found The Marriott Orlando World Center, the world’s largest Marriott. right next to the Falls Pool Bar and Grill (hello fruity drink!), we were glad to have many top-notch restaurants and a market pantry on the property. Tip: be sure to try Hawks Landing steakhouse. Usually we just eat “whatever” (a.k.a. park food), or fight to get a reservation, so this was perfection. We also wanted to catch the Marriott Orlando’s renown nighttime laser show poolside we’d heard about from friends. From our poolside balcony, not only did we see the famous laser show, but also saw several parks fireworks shooting up above. Lights, music, dancing – it seriously was one of the coolest and most magical things we have EVER witnessed at a hotel. As I entered Day 2 well-rested (shocker!), with my son wanting more pool-time while hanging at their tech-style lounge (aka video games), we couldn’t believe we were in Orlando. And, while I noted golfers on the Marriott’s 18-hole championship course, tennis players heading to the courts, and runners enjoying the paths, I was happy to simply shift my lounge chair to stay under the oversized umbrella. After another incredible day and dinner at my son’s favorite, Mikado Japanese hibachi steakhouse, we caught the laser show again this time poolside. It was as if my son had almost forgotten about the nearby parks (well almost…). The next day we were up bright and early to catch the free shuttle to his choice, Epcot. We loved the close proximity of the hotel as well as our magical mouse day. That afternoon when I asked my son if he wanted to eat at Disney, he replied “Mommy I’d rather eat at The Marriott.” A vacation miracle! We dined at The Marriott’s amazing farm-to-table Italian restaurant. Then the real miracle happened. On day 4 my son said instead of picking another park, he’d rather just swim and play on the water slides all day and jump into the pool-side kids activities at The Marriott. We had actually achieved the vacation we had both been wanting in Orlando - my son’s action-packed, filled with fun, and mine relaxing, all while combining a little park adventure. And I might even go so far as saying we came home relaxed, thanks to an amazing stay.

MAYOR RUSTY PAUL GIVES HONEYBEES A HAND WHAT DO POPE FRANCIS, ACTOR MORGAN FREEMAN AND SANDY SPRINGS MAYOR RUSTY PAUL HAVE IN COMMON? They are among the growing number of amateur beekeepers who enjoy tending to hives and keeping a watchful eye on “their girls”—the thousands of worker bees who gather nectar and pollen and produce honey. In spring of 2015, Paul, a longtime beekeeper on his family farm in North Alabama, installed about 25,000 bees at Lost Corner Preserve, a local city park that was once a working farm, as part of an urban beekeeping initiative. He personally tends to the bees and enjoys educating the public about honeybees. “I started beekeeping when I was about 15 when my dad bought five hives from a man who was retiring from the bee business, and I was hooked,” he says. “Bees are fascinating animals. They are amazing workers—they visit about a million flowers to make a pound of honey. Their social structure is not unique in the insect world, but it is uncommon. The hierarchial nature of the colony—from queen to worker to drone—is a great management study. The migration of duties among workers over their fairly short lives—from nurses to emerging bees, to soldiers protecting the colony, to foragers—over a matter of days shows their flexibility and adaptability. Every time I open a colony, I learn something new,” Paul explains. Because of the ongoing decline of honeybee populations (more than 50 percent decline since the 1940s, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture), beekeepers across the world, including the mayor, are having to adapt and learn much more than in the past to combat Colony Collapse Disorder. “When I first began beekeeping, it was a simpler time, and honeybees had few problems. Today, the mobility of commercial beekeeping, where colonies are shipped from California to Florida and everywhere in between, means pathogens and parasites spread over more territory much more quickly. This has put great pressure on colonies and consequently requires more attentive management by beekeepers.” Paul says that he’s had heavy losses among his colonies, including the loss of his best producer from the previous year. The complex disorder usually results in the death of all the bees in a hive. “I had two colonies at Lost Corners and six on my family farm, but today I am down to one. I was hit very hard by Colony Collapse Disorder last year, but I’ve ordered my replacements, which start arriving soon,” says Paul. Paul urges readers to help sustain bee populations with careful selection of landscape plants. “Plant trees and flowers that bees can use for food. Not every flowering plant provides nectar and pollen usable by honeybees.” For example, azaleas and rhododendrons are beautiful, but they offer no benefit to honeybees. The University of Georgia County Extension program provides extensive information for creating a bee-friendly landscape on their website Extension.UGA.edu. “Do a little research into local native plants that support honeybees and plant as many as you can. And not just spring bloomers—bees need to gather food from spring until frost so they need a diverse flora in their forage area to prevent starvation,” he explains. Traditionally beekeepers kept hives to have a ready source of honey. But many hobby beekeepers are forgoing honey collection and tending hives primarily to support the bees and ensure their ongoing survival. Pollinating insects like honeybees and bumble bees are a critical link in the agriculture chain and an integral part of a healthy ecosystem, and as Paul notes, they are fascinating to observe.

FIND YOUR TRIBE (OR YOUR COLONY) If you want to do more than just planting bee-friendly flowers, consider donning the white veil and gloves and becoming a beekeeper. A small investment of your time and money can yield a greater connection with nature as well as some honey. But you are going to need some help. The more you learn about beekeeping, the more questions you will have. It’s important to find mentors, Facebook groups, and local experts to guide you. The Metro Atlanta Bee Association is a great gateway from which to embark on your apiary journey, a portal to an extensive network of local and worldwide beekeeping enthusiasts and experts. The non-profit organization holds meetings monthly at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and offers a program to connect you with beekeepers right in your neighborhood. You can even sign up to become a swarm chaser— rescue an unwanted hive and rehome them. MetroAtlantaBeekeepers.org

GIVING BACK
Recycling Takes On A New Meaning At CAC ARTICLE KRISTEN RISTINO PHOTOGRAPHY NICOLE STEPHENS
DONATE, VOLUNTEER & SHOP YOUR COMMUNITY THRIFT SHOP! WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF RECYCLING THEY USUALLY THINK OF PLASTIC, PAPER AND ALUMINUM. At the Community Assistance Center (CAC), recycling has a whole different meaning. CAC is your place to recycle gently worn clothing, accessories, home goods and furniture. Items donated to CAC stay in the community and go to people who need it. Clothing that one family can no longer wear is given for free to local families in need. Home goods such as sheets and towels and basic furniture are given to disaster victims such as fire or flood. Plus, all of the merchandise is available in the retail store for the general public to purchase at bargain prices. Don’t let the deals fool you, the CAC Boutique is Atlanta’s best keep secret for fabulous finds. New and gently used designer labels and name brand items can often be found. The upscale thrift shop offers everything from clothing and shoes for men, women and children, to kitchenware and furniture. Beverly Evans of Dunwoody has volunteered at CAC for 14 years. She helps accept and sort through donations of clothing and home goods. The sorting team determines which donations will go on the retail floor, hangs, tags and organizes them. Donations that don’t meet CAC thrift shop quality are packaged for family shelters. Twice a week Mrs. Evans gives her time with the same group of volunteers. They enjoy the work, the company and feel good about contributing to CAC’s mission.

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
“I like the fact that CAC is helping people, it’s not just a hand out, it’s a hand up,” says Mrs. Evans. The CAC Boutique is an integral part of CAC’s expansion. In 2016, CAC moved the Boutique to 8607 Roswell Road tripling the shop’s square footage. The Boutique provides free clothing to about 4,000 individuals a year valued at about $68,000. In addition to distributing free clothing to clients via a voucher system, the CAC Boutique did about $92,000 in cash sales in 2017. Sales revenue then goes into CAC assistance programs. Plans for the shop include a rebranding effort this year and increasing revenue to sustain assistance programs. CAC prevents homelessness and hunger in our community by helping neighbors in times of need with rent and utility assistance, food, clothing, free tax return filing, youth programs and free adult education opportunities. About 300 volunteers help operate all areas of CAC including 75 who are dedicated to the Boutique. Once the sorters prepare donations for sale, volunteers from the retail floor keep the racks full and organized and serve as cashiers. Elaine Wadelech has volunteered at the Boutique for four years. She enjoys working on the retail floor and interacting with CAC clients and customers. She knew about CAC for a long time through neighbors who volunteered. “I like that I can give back to my community by volunteering here,” says Mrs. Wadelech. Everyone can give back in our community by making the choice to donate clothing and home goods to CAC. CAC Boutique shopping and donation hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available, contact volunteer@ourcac.org. For more information visit OurCAC.org. BOUTIQUE VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT CAC volunteers range from students to working professionals to retirees. Volunteers operate all areas of the Center such as the donation center, the Boutique thrift shop, the food pantry and reception desk. They serve as client interviewers and adult education teachers. Volunteers also work on youth and seasonal programs as well organize events such as CAC’s largest annual fundraiser, the Vintage Affair. Beverly Evans of Dunwoody has volunteered for CAC for 14 years. She originally came with her late husband after a friend had asked him to volunteer. After a year in the food pantry she moved to the donation center where she has made many friends. Mrs. Evans is retired and enjoys spending time with her adult children and grandchildren. Barbara Shaheb of Sandy Springs has volunteered at the CAC Boutique for about 2 years. She found CAC on the internet after her family moved from Maryland and she was looking for something to do that was meaningful and close to home. One of the things that Mrs. Shaheb likes about volunteering in the Boutique is the interaction with people. “We have a lot of regular customers, it’s nice for them to see friendly faces and it’s nice for us too. It’s just little things like that but I do think it makes a difference in people’s lives.” 26
